A THOUGHT-PROVOKING booklet launched to spell
out why and how Britain should leave the EU has
been causing a stir amongst politicians and the
national media.
Enjoying high-profile endorsements, ‘Positive Vision’
is the work of Eurosceptic Tory MEP David Campbell Bannerman.
As well as dispelling many of the myths used by
the EU to justify our continued membership of the
Union, it maps out the benefits and mechanism
we could use to get out of the EU, a view
supported by two thirds of Tory supporters
(YouGov poll 8.2011).
At this time when the EU crisis is barely off the front
pages and the Prime Minister rightfully announced
a Euro Referendum, Positive Vision is perfectly
timed, to set out what Britain could be like, free of
the chains of the European Union.
David said: “We have heard a lot of horror stories
about what would happen if we left the EU, I
thought it was about time people heard about the
positive side; the freedoms and benefits that it would bring.
“Things like the freedom to control our borders, freedom to spend
the money – the £50 million a day we currently pay to the EU – on
the UK instead, freedom to negotiate better international trade
deals, and the freedom to deregulate the costly mass of 100,000
EU laws that bog down our economic recovery.
“And who would object to our regaining the freedom to restore
our great customs and traditions? The point is: this is what most
Conservatives want. Let’s not leave it to UKIP”
Flying off the shelves
Following a glowing endorsement of the booklet by Daily Mail
journalist, Simon Heffer, Mr Campbell Bannerman has been
inundated with requests for copies from politicians of all levels
and many constituents at a series of members’ meetings and
events across the Eastern Counties.

As part of his ongoing commitment to his constituents, David took a
very active part in the local election campaigns, being seen across the
region, as well as helping in Boris Johnson’s successful re-election
efforts.
He said: “Local elections and hardworking local councillors are the
bedrock of our Conservative Party. I thought it essential to try and help as
much as I could across the East of England, and to help counteract UKIP with
my message that it is better to fight from within the Conservative Party
rather than to support UKIP, which is a pressure group and not a proper
political party.”
“We have many very high quality Councillors and candidates, and it was a
pleasure to meet so many of them on my travels around the region.
“Whilst as a party of Government we were bound to suffer losses, it was
heartening to meet so many activists that, like I do, want to help improve
the lives of local people and show such dedication to our shared cause.”

In his regular column for the
Mail newspaper, Mr Heffer
said of David’s publication:
“His thesis deserves to be
studied carefully. Firstly we
need to break out of the
mindset that anyone who
tries to make the case for
Britain leaving the EU is
mad – or, to judge from the
contempt in which such a
view is treated on certain
BBC programmes –
downright evil.
“Mr Campbell Bannerman’s
strongest argument is that
there would be no economic
downside to our departure.
As the EU sells more to us
than we do to it, it would be
very much in its interests to
enact a free trade
agreement with us were we
to leave.”
David added: “It was very
encouraging to receive such
endorsements as this, and
since then thousands of
copies have been circulated.
I’m also pleased to say that I
gave Prime Minister a copy.
“It is heartening to see that
the debate over our
relationship with the EU is
now gathering such pace,
and it seems an In/Out
Referendum is now closer
than ever.
I am very happy that my
study seems to be playing a
high profile role in these
discussions.”

Recently the EU introduced plans for an EU ‘Citizens
Initiative’ that clearly demonstrated we have been lied
to about our EU membership. David made it clear that
the Valean report, that accompanied the
Initiative announcement, wanted to
harmonise tax, social security, state
benefits, pensions and even divorce laws
right across the EU. In his speech to the
EU, David asked: “What has this to do
with trade or the common market? It is about plans to
make a single EU state.”
The EU always tries to blur issues. On a report on
human rights, Eastern Labour MEP Richard Howitt
trumpeted the human rights of travellers and openly
supported the human rights of those illegally camped
at Dale Farm. David Campbell Bannerman asked where
the respect was of the human rights of the people of
Crays Hill who had to put up with illegal pitches for 10
years? He said: “I believe in balance, we need to respect
human rights but also the rule of law.”
As your Conservative MEP, David voted against a report
recommending Iceland join the EU and made it clear in
a speech in March, saying: “Iceland would be mad to
join the EU – it would lose one of its biggest industries,
that of fishing.
“They would be mad to also join the Euro, and lose the
flexibility of its independent currency. If only Greece had
an independent currency that it could devalue and
recover?” David has latterly visited Iceland to hear first
hand of how this nation benefits from being
independent and self-governing.
In his committees, International Trade and Security &
Defence, David Campbell Bannerman often has
opportunities to question Commissioners and EU
representatives. Back in December, David quizzed the
Executive Director of the European Defence Agency on
the amount of times Baroness Ashton (the EU’s High
Representative) had visited the European Defence
agency. Shockingly, the Director could not say how many
times Ashton had visited or even at all, despite her being
head of the EDA.
In the International Trade Committee he called for free
trade agreements with Argentina to be suspended as
their campaign against the Falkland Islands escalated to
the point of boarding fishing boats and showing ever
more aggression. David added: “The Falklands were
claimed 233 years before Argentina even existed!”
Although it’s been a very busy time for David, he
remains committed to speaking out over issues that
affect local constituents, and would like to hear if there
are any issues you think he should raise. He said: “Please
contact me with any issues you think need to be
discussed at European level, I will be only too pleased to
help you.”
One way you can let David know what is important to
you is to complete and return the survey on page four.
Your Voice in Brussels:David votes and speaks up for you
In what has been a busy year so far in the European Parliament, with their constant
attempts to ignore reality and continue their path to ever closer union, David has
spoken out on many matters that affect our country, our party and our counties.
