The history of Davidson College men’s soccer started years before its first varsity season in 1956. Charles Elder, a 1937 Davidson graduate, re-members kicking the ball around during his years as a Wildcat . Beginning all the way back in 1935, several foreign students, often sons of mission-aries who had played soccer in other countries, started the trend .

“The only soccer I ever knew up until that point was that which I played at recess in grade school,” said Elder . “I played football in high school but was not heavy enough to continue in college . So, lacking any formal training, I tried soccer on for size .”

In those days, there may have been a notice in the student newspaper to advertise tryouts but the team developed mainly by word of mouth . There was no such thing as a coach; the team coached themselves . The only athletic department aid that came in were some balls and sweatshirts . The team supplied its shoes and any other equipment and managed to find transportation to and from its games.

Schedules were comprised of home-and-home matchups . Schools such as Duke, Clemson, Furman and High Point had teams so each would take turns traveling to one another’s field.

“One of the memories I’ll never forget was a game against Clemson,” Elder said. “I was awarded two penalty kicks and after missing the first, I hit my second opportunity . We played until dark and the game was forced to be called, ending in a 1-1 tie .”

In 1956, Davidson soccer was declared a varsity sport . Common opponents were the likes of Duke, North Carolina, North Carolina and Washington & Lee. The Wildcats posted their first winning season at 6-5 in 1958, to be followed by eight straight winning campaigns . Goalkeeper Claude Finney earned All-America status in 1960, the first Davidson soc-cer player to achieve such a feat . The late ’60s saw the ’Cats struggle in the win-loss column but Davidson started the next decade out on the right note with a Southern Conference championship in 1970 . It would be the sport’s first of six league regular-season crowns.

The mid-’70s were an up-and-down period for Wildcat soccer, but in 1980, Charlie Slagle took over the ranks as head coach to elevate the program . The winningest soccer coach at Davidson posted 209 victories during his 21 seasons . Although there were many strong performances, Slagle will always be most remembered for his 1992 team’s run to the College Cup . His team earned a program-best 17 victories that year and stretched the season all the way to an overtime loss to San Diego in the semifinals of the NCAA Tournament. Slagle was honored as the Division I Coach of the Year, the only coach in any sport at Davidson to receive the prestigious award .

Davidson’s only two-time All-American played under Slagle and was a key factor in the trip to the College Cup . Rob Ukrop is the lone Wildcat soccer player to ever lead the nation in scoring, netting 31 goals and 72 total points in his 1992 senior campaign . He is Davidson’s all-time leader in both goals and points and is second by only one in the assist catego-ry . Ukrop continued his soccer career with several A-League teams and also joined the Major League Soccer ranks when he was drafted by and scored for the New England Revolution in 1996 . Ukrop’s #6 has since been retired, and he was later inducted in to the Davidson College Hall of Fame .

In 1995, Davidson won its second SoCon Tournament crown . But be-cause the league did not have an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament until the field expanded to 48 teams in 2000, the Wildcats battled Bowling Green in a 3-1 entry round loss .

Slagle continued to keep his teams among the top half in the confer-ence, but in 2000 — after his 21st season —Slagle handed the reigns to then-assistant coach, Matt Spear . A ’93 Davidson graduate and soccer star, Spear has led the ’Cats to four consecutive winning seasons . In 2003, he was honored as Coach of the Year by both the SoCon and the South Region . The 2003 squad was just the second team in school history to reign as both SoCon regular-season and tournament champions . Da-vidson won 15 games, the most since the 1992 squad posted 17 .

In 2005, the ’Cats advanced to the SoCon title game for the third consecutive season. Davidson finished the campaign with the third most wins in program history recording a 14-6-1 overall mark, while claiming the league’s top-seed for the seventh time . Other bright spots included a national ranking as high as 20th in the Soccer America Top-25, a feat that

hadn’t been accomplished since 2003 . Individually, John Latting became the first Wildcat to earned NSCAA/

adidas All-American honors since Rob Ukrop was tabbed following the team’s memorable run in 1992 .

The 2005 senior class ended their careers in a Wildcat uniform as the program’s all-time winningest class with a mark of 50-28-8 .

“One of the terms I like to feed off of is Pride, Passion and Progress,” commented Spear . “Davidson soccer has a rich and storied history . It is our right and duty as a coaching staff and a team of talented, dedicat-ed players to cherish and celebrate the past while ever expanding the legacy .”

In July of 2014, Davidson joined the Atlantic 10 Conference . The Wildcats recorded their first-ever A-10 win on Oct. 18, a 2-0 blanking of St. Bonaventure .

Another first in 2014, the Wildcats posted a perfect non-conference record going 6-0-4, while recording road wins at eventual National Cham-pion Virginia and ACC foe Duke. It also marked the first time in program history Davidson defeated a pair of ACC opponents on the road in the same season .

In 2005, John Latting became the first Wildcat to earn All-American honors since Rob Ukrop was tabbed following the team’s memorable run in 1992.

“Davidson has provided me with the chance to choose the most difficult paths, to climb the highest mountains, and to achieve the highest peaks in all areas of my life . It not only provides these kinds of opportunities, but nurtures the atmosphere and character to find success . Where else could I possibly defeat two #2 ranked teams in the country (including the defending national champions) in the same season and end up with a prestigious degree in neuroscience that will open all kinds of doors to medical and graduate schools? There’s no question that the best part of being an athlete at Davidson is being a part of a team . I can’t imagine a better group of people than those on my team . “

~ Soren Johnson, 2003First-Team Academic All-America

“Davidson soccer offered me a chance to test the limits of my mental and physical discipline on and off of the field. It was an opportunity to go up against the best athletes in the nation and not only compete with them but defeat them as well . Over my four years at Davidson, I am most grateful for the lasting camaraderie and the ability to balance one of the best undergraduate educations in the nation with the unbeliev-able athletic achievements this program made possible . “

~ John Latting, 2005Second-Team All-American

w In 2005, John Latting became the fourth Wildcat to earn All-American honors after leading Davidson to a 14-6-1 mark, a tie for the regular-season title and its third staight appearance in the SoCon Championship .

w In 2006, legendary men’s soccer coach Charlie Slage was inducted into the Davidson Sports Hall of Fame .

w In 2009, Davidson defeated two ranked teams and earned a No . 21 rank-

ing in Soccer America . Charlie Reiter was named the SoCon Player of the Year .

w Alex Caskey earned his third consecutive first-team All-Southern Conference honor in 2010, becoming just the second Wildcat (John Latting was the first) to complete the feat.

w The 2014 season will mark the Wildcats’ first as a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference . On Oct. 18, 2014, Davidson defeated St . Bonaven-ture, 2-1, to record its first-ever A-10 victory.

w Another first in 2014, the Wildcats posted a perfect non-conference record going 6-0-4, while recording road wins at eventual National Cham-pion Virginia and ACC foe Duke. It also marked the first time in program history Davidson defeated a pair of ACC opponents on the road in the same season .

The 1992 Davidson soccer team made a run to the semifinals of the NCAA Tournament, hosted by the college and played on its home field — Richardson Stadium. The team’s record of 17-5-5 marks the most wins in a season by any Wildcat soccer squad. The ’Cats played 552 minutes of soccer during their four

tournament games, which works out to over six regulation games. Davidson fell 3-2 in overtime to San Diego in the semifinal game.
