Newsletter 26 Week 6 Term 3
25 August 2015
Key Dates, Term 3
Dear Parents, Children and Friends,
YEAR SIX CONFIRMATION
A group of our Year Six children made
their Sacrament of Confirmation on
Sunday at All Hallows, Boulder. It was a
beautiful mass led by Father Andrew and I
was most impressed with the reverence
and maturity demonstrated by our
students. I would like to acknowledge the
work of Mrs Houston, Mr Shaw and
Mrs Stafford for preparing the children to
receive this very special sacrament and
Father Andrew for leading us in a lovely
mass. Congratulations girls and boys!
ST JOSEPH’S SCHOOL ATHLETICS
CARNIVAL
Last Friday our students from Pre Primary
to Year Six took part in the School
Athletics Carnival held on our school oval
on a lovely winter’s day. We were blessed
to be joined by a large group of parent
volunteers and spectators. Overall, our
children thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
Congratulations to Trafalgar who won the
faction shield and to Ivanhoe who won the
Spirit Shield.
As well as all children being able to
participate to earn points towards their
faction, a carnival such as this allows
children with gifts and talents in this area
to shine and share their gifts with their
peers and the wider community. This year
we congratulate our champion boys and
girls and the runners-up on their
outstanding individual efforts. I would like
to also acknowledge the speedy staff team
who took out the Golden Baton in fine
style.
Finally, I would like to thank Mrs Woolley
for her meticulous effort in coordinating
the carnival, the staff for assisting in setting
up the oval for the day and our fantastic
parents who volunteered and selflessly
shared their time and expertise with us in
various capacities. Your efforts are much
appreciated!
Keep in Our Prayers Please pray for members of our community who are sick or in need or our prayerful support.

FATHERS’ DAY STALL
On Wednesday 2nd September the P&F will hold their

the children every year as they go to great pains to

children. I know there will be many happy dads when
they are presented with their gift on Fathers’ Day.

INFORMAL PROSE INVENTORIES
This week, classroom teachers will administer the
Informal Prose Inventory (IPI) to students above
reading level 30. IPIs are a test of a student’s reading
ability. They provide the classroom teacher with
information about a student’s reading ability and use of
strategies to decode and comprehend texts. These
tests provide a benchmark against which teachers can
measure progress and plan lessons, with a greater
understanding of their students’ strengths and
weaknesses. Once our students surpass level 30, the
classroom teacher no longer administers monthly
running records. Instead, these students move to sitting
termly IPIs which, in conjunction with our termly
Literacy Pro Placement Test, assist teachers in
providing all students with differentiated reading
instruction.
IPAD PARENT AND STUDENT WORKSHOP
Our next iPad workshop for parents and students from
Pre Primary to Year Six will take place in the
Wittenoom Library on Wednesday 2nd September
from 5.30-6.30pm. The purpose of this workshop is to
provide parents with support and a greater
understanding of how iPads are used in classrooms
across the school as a creative learning tool.
This is an informal event where we will be using a
number of apps that your child has used in class, or
may use in the future. Parents are invited to bring their
child along to the workshop, in order to collaborate
when creating.
Please register your attendance online at our
EventBrite page, which can be accessed via the
link or QR code below. Please ensure that you
select the number of tickets required for you
and your child/children.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CURRICULUM NEWS
O Lord,
you know how busy I must be this day.
If I forget you,
do not forget me.
This prayer was written by Sir Jacob Astley, before the
Battle of Edgehill in 1642.
We become so busy in our daily life that we forget our
Creator and what he has done for us, as well as our
friends and family and the things they do for us. We
often take things for granted and forget to say ‘thanks’.
I am honestly just like that, I am so consumed in my
own life. If I slow down, think of my loved ones around
me, and say thanks, I would probably be a much happier
person.

God took the strength of a mountain,
The majesty of a tree,
The warmth of a summer sun, The calm of a quiet sea,
The generous soul of nature, The comforting arm of night,
The wisdom of the ages, The power of the eagle's flight,
The joy of a morning in spring, The faith of a mustard seed,
The patience of eternity, The depth of a family need,
Then God combined these qualities, When there was nothing more to add,
He knew His masterpiece was complete, And so, He called it ... Dad
