Dear Parishioners,
We just almost at the half-way mark in Lent, at
least in terms of number of days. Traditionally,
though, the Church usually considers this
Sunday, today, to be the half-way mark, which is
exactly 21 days before Easter. This Sunday is
known as “Lætáre” Sunday. The Latin word Lætáre means to
rejoice. The Introit for both forms of the Mass is identical. Part of the
introit reads: Lætáre, Jerusalem: et convéntum fácite, omnes qui
dilígitis eam. Rejoice, O Jerusalem, and come together all you who
love her. We have to remember that Latin is still the universal
language of the Church and, indeed, the Ordinary Form of the Mass
was composed in Latin and only then translated into various
languages. The church clothes Her priests in rose vestments today
and the burden of Lent is lightened this Sunday.
This Sunday, and its Advent “twin,” were known as “Rose Sunday,”
primarily because of the color of the Mass vestments. However, this
Sunday also has another tradition behind it, emphasizing the
designation, rose, a bit more. In the late middle ages, the Pope would
bless gilded roses which he then sent to the various Catholic
sovereigns. In honor of the easing of Lenten penances, flowers can
be placed on the high altar and the organ can be played as it is on
other Sundays of the year.
The schedule for Holy Week is pretty much set and will definitely
appear, at the latest, in next week’s bulletin. It might appear in this
bulletin, but, at this point I don’t quite know. One thing we can all be
sure of, however, is that Holy Saturday will be celebrated at
“friendlier” hours in both forms. I, for one, would just love to get to
bed by midnight or before.
I hope that this Lent has been a fruitful one for all of you. This
Sunday should give us all the strength to continue on for just three
more weeks. Let’s make the most of this day of respite. Rest, be with
your loved ones and have a nice dinner. It all begins again on
Monday morning. God bless you my children and my friends.

Longing to eat with pigs. It seems inconceivable that some would
be so hungry they would long for the slop and husks in the pig sty.
That is part of the gospel story today. It is also the story for 12% of
citizens and, worse, 18% of children who suffer food insecurity in
our own United States. The prodigal son in the story comes to his
senses and returns to the compassion of father and home. We are
urged to be that smart, to step away from prideful behavior and
return to the Father of all life.
What gets in the way of attending to God’s compassion?
How can I rejoice when God cuts a prodigal one some slack?
I will do this mercy work, giving food to the hungry, by
___________?

Daybreak Shelter.
By the grace of God, we were blessed with an angel who will match
your donations – up to $50,000. Will you join our angel to help the
homeless and others who live in poverty who are served by Catholic
Charities? With your support, Catholic Charities can continue to
serve our poor and vulnerable neighbors.
Every day, we meet individuals who are experiencing poverty, but
are motivated to create a brighter future through hard work. The
resources provided by Catholic Charities, including those at

entire community. Please be generous. This is an opportunity to help
someone who will have nowhere else to turn if Catholic Charities
isn’t there to help.

Celebrated Right is a Tragedy Following Governor Pritzer’s lead in declaring that Illinois will be
the most progressive state in the nation concerning late term abortion
and parent notification, Illinois Democrats have sponsored House
Bill 2495 and Senate Bill 1942, misnamed the “Reproductive Health
Act” along with House Bill 2467 and Senate Bill 1594 which repeals
the Parent Notification of Abortion Act. These bills comprise the
most radical piece of abortion legislation proposed in any state to
date.
If these bills pass, Illinois will become a third trimester abortion
destination, removing all late term limits. Illinois will become an
underage abortion destination, by repealing the Parental Notice Act.
Illinois women will fall victim to substandard, uninspected abortion
facilities by removing nearly all public safety requirements. Illinois
will remove public health protection by allowing abortions to be
performed by nurses and nurse practitioners. Illinois will force all
insurance plans to provide for free abortions including church plans.
Illinois will declare that the unborn child will have no rights under
the law even at 9 months gestation. Illinois will remove abortion
related conscience protections from nurses, doctors and hospitals.
Illinois will remove all public reporting of abortion statistics.
This is reckless endangerment for women and a horrific death for
unborn children. Babies in the womb can feel pain at 20 weeks and
this legislation allows abortion for ANY reason through nine
months. Is this legislation protecting women’s health? A medical
procedure performed by someone who is not a medical doctor and
performed on a minor child without parent knowledge?
State House and Senate legislators can be contacted by visiting their
website or calling. Urge them to vote “No”. State Senators Pat
McGuire (43rd district), 815-207-4445 or Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant
(49th district), 815-254-4211 and State Representatives Larry Walsh,
Jr. ( 86th district), 815-730-8600 or Natalie Manley (98th district),

Family Class
Crowning An Image of the Blessed Virgin Mary “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it
be done to me according to your word.” Luke
1:38 For centuries, Mary has been a powerful
presence in our Church and has inspired
generations of believers. Mary's yes to God
exemplifies perfect faith and courage. The
Magnificat, her beautiful song of praise, speaks
of justice, mercy, and peace. It also gives us
clues as to how her life of perfect discipleship
can inspire us today. Getting to know Mary and
reflecting on her life of faith help us to grow in
our own lives. Through Mary we come to deepen
our appreciation of the Mystery of the
Incarnation: God becoming one of us in order to dwell among us and
bring us his salvation. As individuals and as a parish family, we too
are invited to spend some time getting to know Mary. Who is this
woman who, at an early age, was full of grace, faith, and trust in
God? Who is this parent who taught her child and encouraged him
throughout his life? Who is this faithful Jewish woman who watched
her son die, yet believed in the promise that his death would bring
new life to the world? Who was this person who said yes to God
throughout her life? Together as a faith community let us celebrate
Mary's yes and get to know who she was and who she is for us
today. Join us as we close our Religious Education Program school
year by “Crowning an Image of the Blessed Virgin Mary” on
Sunday, April 28th at 8:30 a.m. We will learn about Mary as the
Mother of God, as the greatest of saints, and as a model for our own
lives.
Families are encouraged to bring their own flower to present to
Mary, our mother, during our closing prayer service. Students will be
dismissed after our closing prayer service. If the weather is nice, we
will have this service around our outside statue of our Blessed
Mother. If the weather is rainy, we will have this service in the main
foyer of the school.
