Dear Saint Anne parishioners:

Pope Francis wrote something recently that I very much like, and very fitting to these days before the coming of the Christ Child.

“…We possess within us a yearning for the infinite, an infinite sadness, a ‘nostalgia’ – the ‘nostos algos’ (home sickness) of Odysseus – which is satisfied only by an equally infinite response… “Only wonder leads to knowledge… it is what leads me to seek, to open myself up; it is what makes the answer – not a verbal or conceptual answer – possible for me. If wonder opens me up as a question, the only response is the ‘encounter’, and only with the encounter is my thirst quenched.”

As each one of us, in the mystery that is our life, receives our portion of daily bread – of sadness and uncertainty on the one hand, and of comfort and joy on the other – it is inevitable that we look to One beyond us for strength, for answers. No one of us has all the answers. No one of us is sufficient unto himself. And if we are to truly have Hope, there must be One beyond us who has strength we do not have, knowledge we do not possess, and love that is inexhaustible.

How dreary and impossible would be our life if we could experience thirst, but never the encounter – the delicious coolness of water which alone can quench. How dreary and impossible would be our life if – in the midst of the yearning for that Someone who alone can fill our heart – that same encounter were not possible, not ordained. How dreary and impossible is a life without Hope.

From the distant heavens, God is come to us as a little child. Upon the tiny shoulders of this little child rests the Hope of all the world - no matter the darkness, no matter the despair. This Child is the Wonder that we must open our hearts to. This Child is the Answer to every question of our heart. This Child and the gift he brings is the Wonder which must drive away our dullness of spirit and dispel the weariness of our self-satisfaction. This Child is come to awaken Wonder in us again.

O little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie! Above thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by. Yet in thy dark streets shineth the everlasting Light; The hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight.

For Christ is born of Mary, and gathered all above, While mortals sleep, the angels keep their watch of wondering love. O morning stars, together proclaim the holy birth, And praises sing to God the King, and peace to men on earth! Merry Christmas! Father Bob

Emmanuel To name someone or something means that we have a relationship with that entity. Family names identify us with our heritage; nicknames denote familiarity or a special bond. In the Old Testament, the meaning of a name ran deep. It identified one’s mission, even one’s very being. The amazing name “Emmanuel” was first uttered by Isaiah as he described to the frightened King Ahaz the promised one who would come to redeem the people. Emmanuel is not a frightening philosophical name, such as Omnipotent, Omniscient, Almighty. It does not connote distance and transcendence. It does not generate reverential fear. The name Emmanuel implies closeness and intimacy and compassion. Emmanuel is the name given to the one who is coming. It means “God is with us.” God is entrusted to the care of a virgin, who will bear this child. Only God would be so compassionate to draw so near, to be so available and vulnerable. Only God could love this well.

This is the most fantastic birth in the history of humanity, the one which changed the face of the world! This is how far God humbled and compromised himself with us! This is Emmanuel!

A HUGE THANK YOU to all who took tags and bought such wonderful gifts, baked goodies, helped with decorating at Grand Prairie, wrapped gifts at Urban Outreach or St Anne and volunteered to assist at one or more of the various events. The Christmas Ministry can help so many because of your generosity. St Anne is truly a blessed parish with wonderful people! Altar Servers: Saint Anne Offers New Ministry for Youth Starting in February 2014, St. Anne will be offering the opportunity for all youth grades 4-12 to be altar servers. St. Anne is offering two training sessions, to take place in the worship area. All interested youth will be required to attend at least one training session, preferably they should attend both sessions.

Save the Date The St. Anne Winter Social will be taking place on Friday February 7th at Bristol Oaks. As you may be aware we began the Winter Social in 2011 and it’s become our largest social and dinner event of the year and an important part to our revenue generation activities. I would ask you to save the date and start to consider if there are any auction items you would be willing to donate or create. Gift certificates, vacation rental spots, sports memorabilia, artwork, creative food, dinners and events have all historically secured nice bids for St. Anne.

Please join us again!

Stewardship Prayer

My church is composed of people like me.

I help make it what it is. It will be friendly, if I am.

Its pews will be filled, if I help fill them.

It will do great work, if I work.

t will make generous gifts to many causes, if I am a

generous giver.

It will bring other people into its worship and fellowship,

if I invite and bring them.

It will be a church of loyalty and love, of fearlessness

and faith, and a church with a noble spirit, if I,

who make it what it is, am filled with these same things.

Therefore, with the help of God,

I shall dedicate myself to the task of being all the things

that I want my church to be.

Stewardship through SCRIP Our Christmas errands may all be run and our gifts may all be purchased (hopefully using SCRIP) but next week we are all going to have to go the grocery store, the drug store and fill the tank with gas again. Please make a resolution in 2014 to buy all your groceries and gas with SCRIP. It helps you to budget, it helps you with an additional tax deduction and it helps St. Anne. See the information on the previous pages to set up an automatic standing order for your groceries and gas. Thank you and Merry Christmas from the SCRIP ministry.
