December...the last month of the year is here. Damn, that was fast. The summer weather is finally starting to change to a more wintery feel. The water temp is cooling and the winds

have been a little chilly in the evenings. There have been south swell still, so not bad for being December. The north shore had a big swell a few weeks ago that got all the sand off the reefs.

The Triple Crown has started and the first contest has fin-ished up.

Congrats to Joel Centio for win-ning the Reef Hawaiian Pro at Haleiwa!

Two more contests to go for the Triple Crown. I hope a Hawaiian wins the Triple Crown this year.

And I hope Joel Parkinson wins the world title. Mick already won one, its Parko’s turn.

Thanks to all that came down to the “Modern Collective” Hawaii premier last month. The dvd should have come out by the time you get this newsletter. If you haven't gotten your copy already, I would hurry and get one. It’s one of the better mov-

ies I’ve seen in a longtime. Even though I’m really not into the airs, I was blown away by how high these guys were get-ting and how far they travel in the air.

You maybe thinking why you would need this app? I downloaded this app so I could check the winds on certain parts of the island. You know the areas of the island where the wind makes a big difference on how the surf will be. Especially on the days when you can’t really tell what the wind is doing. I found this app to be very useful as it has wind stations located pretty close to some spots I surf, and it helps me make a decision on

which direction I should head before I leave home. //Keith

WORLD CHAMP?

The 2009 ASP World Champ will be crowned during the last event of the year. If you have-

n't been following the tour, Parko had a commanding ratings lead early in the year but had a string of bad results towards the end of the year. Mick on the other hand, was consistent throughout the year and turned it up a notch toward the end with 3 wins in the last 4 events. Mick is currently #1 in the ratings with Parko at #2.


The Donald Takayama Halo Fin by Reid Inouye When I first walked into Hawaiian South Shore on Ward Avenue in Honolulu, the first thing I saw was their table display of fins. What caught my eyes though were the unique set of fins they call the Takayama Halo's. Now me, hav-ing never had Donald's Teriyaki sauce over a decade ago saw something brewing in my head and asked owner David Kelly if I could try a set on my 9'3" Jay Richardson SUB and the rest is history. Now all my boards are equipped with these Halo's and here's why. SUP boards are super sensitive to fin and fin placement (for surfing anyway). These fins on the right boards give you so much pivot off the bottom with good snap off the top. Also with that drive you can fly past sections and if you decide to hit a flat, you can lay it down and gouge a solid pivot cut back into the soup of the wave. On my so-called quad-5, (actually a 5 fin), everything I visual-ized on a SUP that I did as a kid on a six-o is now a reality. I'm not crapping you, they really work. Something all SUP surfers must realize is you fins are every-thing. These boards are big shortboards (mine anyway), and these fins give you solid pivot and release yet holds when it counts. No spin outs or out of control positioning on the wave. Bottom line, "Do you want to surf the wave or ride it?" Enough said. Just go down to Hawaiian South Shore and buy'em. Reid

Took a day to demo the 9" Takayama Halo fin on my 9'6" Silverspoon and was really impressed with the results.

This fin gave me a big increase in speed with very little effort. Turns were more loose but the board did not feel sloppy or uncontrollable.

The board was a little less forgiving when noseriding, but it was not a big deal for me. Overall, I really enjoyed

riding with this fin and ended up buying it. Good addition to anyone's fin collec-tion.— Jeremy

Just writing a Testimonial on your Halo Fins. I have been using the Halo 4 ¾” Thruster Fins since June of this year. It was a very good change from my H2’s I had on. I have used it only on two boards. My everyday board is a Al Merrick M-13 which is 6’ 10” x 21 x 2 11/16. The board responds very good with very tight turns and cut backs. I am able to generate a tremendous amount of speed thru these fins to make sections. Yesterday I went and switched my Halo’s to my H2’s just for a comparison. I am definite the Halo is my choice. My board is a 6'3" Quad Fish from Rawson. Flat

rocker, fast, but tough to turn.

Well first I went out in 4+ foot spot near Left Overs. The fins drove well and had plenty of speed off the bottom. I struggled a bit to turn off

the top.

Felt good.

Then I went to Gas Chambers. Solid 4-6 foot. Hollow. Pumping. I was making critical drops, backside and pushing right up into the pocket. I

felt very confident on this fin set up.

Felt very good.

Put a "tune up" on my board. Good call!

Skeptical at first with the design. But after catching first wave with it I was amazed. First thing I noticed was the drive. I barely had to pump my board to get it going. Once it got going it would just keep generating speed. Found myself beating the wave and having to slow down. Fins took away that thruster feel and made it feel more like a twin fin but with more hold. So you had to ride board similar to riding a traditional twin fin. So bottom turns, top turns, and cutbacks had to be a little more drawn out. But doing turns with them on were so smooth and it kept the drive going through turns.

So ya, fins would go well with someone who wants to turn their thruster into a speedy rocket that turns smooth like butter...haha!

I'm a goofy foot and I ride a 8'0 quad Griffin hybrid funboard. I have been using the MR twin fin set(without trailer) for the past winter season into summer with great results. Got the twin fin halos last week and have been using it a lot at Chuns for the past week or so. Waves been averaging in the 3'-4' with pluses(Haw'n scale). I really like the way the board can pull off tighter turns up the wave face. I've been able to take off at the point and make it past the west bowl a number of times. I like the drives these babies produce, especially since I go backside most of the time. Can't wait till the quads come in. Daryl A.

Aloha, These Halo fins are great! Bought them last week & surfed them four times already. I'm rockin the 4 1/8" side bites & 8" center fin on my 10' SUP. They put out more speed & allow much tighter turns & carves, while still holding well when up on the nose. I've also found that the 8" center fin works just as well on the Takayama ITP 9'3". Haven't tryed them on anything bigger than head high yet, but I'm sure they'll hold up great!

Surf travel is expensive. Think about it..first of all there’s the airlines. They have all these taxes, fuel charges, extra baggage charges, and finally, the most hideous charge, the board charges. It can cost you $500 one way to take 3 boards! But we’ll not get into that topic this time. There are some alternative options that can get you into some pretty good and uncrowded waves without spending a ton of cash. There is the option of going to the outer islands. I’ve been surfing on Kauai for a bunch of years and have always got-ten really good waves there. The plane fare is usually pretty cheap, with a round trip costing about $90. Cheap when you compare that to a $1000 ticket to Indo. It only takes about 30 minutes to get to Lihue compared to 20+ hours to Indo. Hav-ing friends or family there always helps out when needing a place to stay and to stash your boards. If not, there are some decent priced hotels to choose from plus lots of vacation pack-ages that include air, room, and car. I just saw one for $400 per person for a week...not bad compared to $1800 a week on a boat. Another plus is that there are waves year round. Just like on Oahu, some-where on the island will be breaking. There is probably the best left in the state located on that island, or at least I think so. On the north and west sides, there are numerous of quality spots which I won’t name. I have never stayed on Kauai for longer than 4 days at a time, but I could get just as much or even more surf time there than going to a surf camp for a week somewhere out of state. You know the food will be good plus there are the conveniences of super markets, and 711’s. An outer island surf trip would be a nice low budget alternative compared to traveling half way around the world to surf.

Another alternative is to stay on Oahu and rent a beach house on the north shore. Don’t try and rent one during the peak winter months when the circus is in town. Wait till the end of spring when the weather calms down and the tourist leave. There will still be some waves... A week at a house in front of Pipe, Rocky PT, or Sunset..oh you’ll get some

waves, and since you’re staying right on the beach you can pick and choose when to surf. Surf before the crowds and in between and after. It can be expensive to rent these vacation homes especially with the rental tax and cleaning fees, but if you go in with a bunch of friends it is really not that bad of a deal. And it’s on this island so no AIR-LINE BOARD FEES! These alternatives can get you into some good waves and good times for a reasonable price. However if you’re looking for more of an ad-

venture and have the time off, you may want to think about that $4000 boat trip.

The Vans Triple Crown of Surfing presented by Rockstar Energy Drink makes history today, announcing the Triple Crown - Triple Threat bonus purse that makes this prestigious Hawaiian series the first $1,000,000 stop on the Association of Surfing Professionals Dream Tour. More than 150 surfers from 17 nations have a crack at the loot as the series kicks off this Thursday, November 12, at Haleiwa on Oahu's North Shore.
