Mill City received an unusual blan-ket of snow last Thursday that created problems for drivers in specific spots around town. Tim Widmer of The Canyon Weekly was working at the office on 150 North 1st street in Mill City.

Letter To The Community,

I am writing on behalf of the Mill City Gates Community Assistance Center. I am sure a lot of the community knows of the losses that this program has endured this past year. First, the person who did a great job of running the program for many years moved away. He trained his replacement, who was also doing a great job until she too had to move. Then the wonderful sec-retary treasurer who was with the orga-nization for many years passed away last spring. With these huge losses and large cuts to the food received by the Food Bank, our Community Assistance Center has had some serious struggles this year. As the year has progressed we have formed a strong board and are pulling to-gether a great team of volunteers to run the Food Bank. We have people making trips to the Marion Polk Food Share picking up whatever produce is available that week. We have people who have stepped forward to do paperwork and to place our monthly

order. Some people are shopping for the best deals on food. There are people to help unload the shipments that come in, and many others are covering where there is a need. We started with, “Where is the check-book? Who has the P.O. box number? And where is the key? Who is going to pay the bills?” Well, we would like the community to know that: We found the checkbook, the P.O. box number is 1006, we got the key, and the bills are paid! Thank you to all of you who stepped up and took on a piece of this ministry. Thank you Community for being there for us, for being patient as we sort all this out. And thank you for the food and financial dona-tions that we are receiving. Please know that we are committed to keeping the As-sistance Center open and that we will be wise stewards of the gifts donated to this organization.

Sincerely,Lauretta Benjamin, Gates

Thanks to YOU, Mill City Food Bank is going strong

Maybe you’ve noticed trees thinned and significant activity up the hill as you turn from Hwy 22 at The Gingerbread House toward Lyons? At the first left, up Emma St., The Old School Community and Youth Center is simmering with vision and mission. Many caring folks are investing time, machinery, and elbow grease to begin this restorative project. A faded icon to many in recent years, The Old School is gaining

a fresh purpose - intent on bridging gener-ations and offering a positive atmosphere of hope and worth. As the New Year dawns, work projects are being scheduled for cleaning, prepping walls and floors, painting and refinishing. If anyone would like to lend a helping hand or donate toward the cost of restora-tion, please give a call to Mehama Com-munity Church at 503-859-2849.

Community/Youth Center in Mehama becoming a reality, Volunteers welcomed!

The World Premier of “The 13th Day of Christmas”

This play has never before been produced and tells the story of a young woman who has mysteriously received all the gifts of the twelve days of Christmas, throughout every day. All this and she has no clue who her “True Love “ is. How will she deal with neighbors, TV film crews, and most of all, Mrs. Henderson? December 12 and 13 at 7:30 PM at Santiam Auditorium. The first printing of the 2014 Beautiful North Santiam Canyon Cal-endar was exceptionally well received, and sold out in the first week, said project developer Michelle Gates. “I barely got them in stock before they sold out. I wasn’t even able to get very many copies to local retailers - that’s how well received they were.” The high quality calendar features images from professional pho-tographers of areas around the North Santiam Canyon, including Detroit Lake, Opal Creek, North Fork and Niagara Dam. It’s cur-

rently in the second printing, and more calendars should hopefully be here by Christmas. “The printers haven’t given me a guarantee, but they’re working hard to try to make it happen,” said Gates. “If they get here in time, I’ve decided to do local deliveries by hand, so people can have them for the holiday.” She said that she finds it interesting to watch someone open their calendar for the first time. Usually, they spend several minutes ad-miring the image, then start asking her questions about where it was taken. She’s also hearing a lot of “wow”s - and lots of stories about people’s experiences at a certain spot. And people aren’t just buying it for themselves. Gates said that she has taken many orders of 5-10 calendars because the person wanted to send a copy to each relative, or to friends out of the area. “I love that they are going around the world - part of the project was de-signed to promote tourism, and hopefully it’s doing just that.” The 2014 Beautiful North Santiam Canyon Calendar also raised over $200 combined for several area non-profit groups, including Mari-Linn School, the Canyon Crisis Center, Meow Village and StaytonEvents.com. And Gates is welcoming any new group that wants to participate in the fundraiser. “It’s really easy for them. The groups don’t really have to do anything - they just have to contact me, and we put their name on the list at www.staytonevents.com. Then they get cash for any purchase made in their name. All the processing, tracking and shipping is done for them.” The North Santiam Calendar retails for $19.95 and can be ordered at www.staytonevents.com. The second printing will also be avail-able at Rosie’s Coffee House in Mill City and Timbertown Resale in Lyons, once they come in. “I want to thank everyone who participat-ed in the project, and send a huge thanks to everyone who purchased a copy. Your support of this calendar tells me that people really want to share this area, and I’m looking forward to more projects like this in the future!”

Second printing scheduled for first annual North Santiam Canyon Calendar

By Michelle GatesA beautiful tree and the festive lights brought out the holi-day cheer in those who went to the 2nd annual Mill City Christmas Tree Lighting. Commu-nity members packed Mill City City Hall for the event, bringing kids to take a turn on Santa’s lap, choir members singing joyful tunes and of course, some who just came for

the food. And the food was good - BBQ sliders were donated by the Trio, hot drinks were donated by Rosie’s Cof-fee and elephant ears came from the Sierra. It

was a cold night, so the tree outside was lit up pretty quickly, then the group moved inside to warm up and be serenaded by the Com-

munity Chorus. The Christmas Tree Lighting was partial-ly a food drive for the food bank and they gathered a bucket full of canned goods. It was all made possible by the efforts of the Mill City Eagles, Odd Fellows, Mill City Pharmacy, Mill City Market Place, the Girl Scouts, Ken Cartwright, Thorin Thacker, Mark Hebing, Joyce Trout, the Santiam Canyon Calen-dar and the staff at City Hall, plus those already mentioned.

With the holiday season comes an increase in holiday crime, including scams and un-fortunately the targets of these crimes are often senior citizens. The Marion County Sheriff’s Office is already experiencing a higher than average volume of citizens calling to report that they are receiving phone calls from people posing as debt collectors and demanding money. These citizens are being threatened with arrest by the scammers, if the debt is not paid. Unfortunately, most of these crimes are generated from outside of the United States and there is very little that law en-forcement can do to stop it. Citizens must be proactive, be aware and protect them-selves through education. Below are a few educational tips, as well as two web pages you can visit to learn more about fraud.

1. DO NOT respond to e-mails, mail, telephone solicitations, raffles or contests from unknown entities. 2. DO NOT answer e-mail warnings that have “undisclosed recipients” in the ad-dress line, a blank space next to “Dear,” numerous spelling errors, and/or awkward English. 3. DO NOT e-mail personal or financial information, including credit card or bank account numbers, passwords, Social Secu-rity numbers, etc. Most internet e-mail is NOT secure. 4. DO NOT be fooled by legitimate-look-ing e-mails, even if they contain logos, pictures, copyrights or names of legitimate businesses. The Marion County Sheriff’s Office wish-es everyone a safe and happy holiday sea-son.

Sheriff’s office warns of holiday telephone scammers

(Detroit, OR) Motorists may encounter short, intermittent delays on Forest Road 46 (Breitenbush Highway) through mid-January due to helicopter logging in the area. The delays are necessary for public safety. Forest Highway 46 is a popular scenic route that runs between the Willamette and Mount Hood National Forests, how-ever, at this time of the year, the road is often snowed out in the higher elevations. As a reminder, Forest Service roads are generally not maintained for winter trav-el.“We appreciate visitors’ patience and understanding during these delays,” said Grady McMahan, District Ranger for the

Detroit Ranger District. “A helicopter will be flying close to the road at times as it transports logs between the timber sale area and a landing where the logs will be stacked; we want to ensure public safety during these operations.”Motorists on Highway 22 may also see helicopters working on another timber sale located near Detroit Reservoir, north of Mongold Boat Ramp. For more information, visit the Detroit Ranger District Recreation Update web-page at www.fs.usda.gov/goto/willa-mette/rec-update-detroit, or contact Chris Lund, Timber Sale Administrator for the Detroit Ranger District at (503)854-4209.
