Today the Virgin goes forth, Making her way to a cave Where from her ineffably, God the eternal Word will be born. Let the world be filled with joy, Hearing these tidings. Joining the angels and shepherds Let us give glory to Him Who is God from all ages Yet wills to be seen as a little Child.

EPISTLE READING: St. Paul's Letter to the Ephesians 6:10-17 Brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we are not contending against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world rulers of this present darkness, against the spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand, therefore, having girded your loins with truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the equipment of the gospel of peace; besides all these, taking the shield of faith, with which you can quench all the flaming darts of the evil one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

GOSPEL READING: The Gospel According to St Luke 18:35-43

At that time, as Jesus drew near to Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging; and hearing a multitude going by, he inquired what this meant. They told him, "Jesus of Nazareth is passing by." And he cried, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!" And those who were in front rebuked him, telling him to be silent; but he cried out all the more, "Son of David, have mercy on me!" And Jesus stopped, and commanded him to be brought to him; and when he came near, he asked him, "What do you want me to do for you?" He said, "Lord, let me receive my sight." And Jesus said to him, "Receive your sight; your faith has made you well." And immediately he received his sight and followed him, glorifying God; and all the people, when they saw it, gave praise to God.

Missionaries to Korea In May 2018 Father Chris Moore completed his three years at St Vladimir's Orthodox Theological Seminary and is now making plans to return to the missionary field. After a great while of praying and seeking out field options, the Moore family believes the Lord is calling them to South Korea. Father Chris, Presbytera Jen, and their sons, Andrew and Gideon are currently living with Jen’s parents in Indiana. Father Chris lived in South Korea from September 10 - October 7, 2018, spending most of his days at the St Nicholas Orthodox Cathedral in Seoul. Father Chris also traveled to Incheon and visited Father Daniel Na, who serves the well established parish of St Paul. While in Korea Father Chris and his family made a

trip down to St Dionysios Orthodox parish in Ulsan, a city of 1.1 million people. The parish lost their priest, Fr. Paul Kwon, last year to cancer and has since been without a full-time Priest. Thus the Moore family are beginning their ministry in South Korea to meet this immediate need. Father Antonios Woo has also been coming down from Seoul every weekend. Many Koreans and Korean families are part of the parish, along with a sizable expat community of Greeks, Russians, Ukrainians, Romanians, and Copts. There is a need for a full-time clergy presence there. Father Chris and his family want to be ready and available to serve this established parish and also as missionaries in the city and its surrounding region.

Lastly, he was able to become acquainted with the English speaking expat community of the Cathedral and enjoyed getting to know this group of folks, their activities, accomplishments, and struggles. As he anticipates being the only Orthodox priest with English as a first language in the country, we expect a ministry to this community in some fashion as well.

What’s Next? The Moore family are in the process of finalizing approvals to move to Ulsan, South Korea. Applications have been approved by the Office of Immigration in Seoul, but they wait for their visas to be approved by the South Korean Consulate in Chicago. They also are seeking out housing options available in the city, and are in a season of support-raising. Hopefully, individuals and churches are interested in supporting our anticipated ministry in Korea. Regular monthly, quarterly, and yearly donations will help get them to Korea quickly and provide longevity. Father Chris and his family will begin with a two-year term in South Korea and hope to serve many terms and live in the country for many years, as the Lord wills. They also value regular prayers of the faithful for their preparation, transition, and efforts. They have seen even in this past month how God is faithful and truly works through the prayers of his people.

Holy Communion

Holy Communion is the Body and Blood of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Saint John of Kronstadt (1829 – 1908) says, “in partaking of the Holy Sacrament, be as sure that you partake of the Body and Blood of Christ, as you are sure that every moment you breathe air.”

Saint Cyril of Jerusalem (about 313 – 386) also teaches us “Since Christ Himself has declared the bread to be His Body, who can have any further doubt? Since He Himself has said quite categorically, ‘This is My Blood,’ who would dare to question it, and say that it is not His Blood? Therefore, it is with complete assurance that we receive the bread and wine as the Body and Blood of Christ. His Body is given to us under the symbol of bread, and His Blood is given to us under the symbol of wine, in order to make us by receiving them one body and blood with Him. Having His Body and Blood in our members, we become bearers of Christ and sharers, as Saint Peter says, of the divine nature… Do not then regard the Eucharistic elements as ordinary bread and wine: they are in fact the Body and Blood of

the Lord, as He Himself has declared. Whatever your senses tell you, be strong in faith.” The Lord urges us to make a sincere effort to make peace with each other when anger or hurt exists, seeking forgiveness or granting forgiveness, as appropriate, (Matthew 5:24) before approaching the Lord. Receiving Holy Communion is certainly important to our spiritual life and growth. This ultimate connection with Jesus Christ is a gift which God gives to us and one which should be accepted gratefully and responsibly. Our Church teaches that receiving Holy Communion frequently is encouraged. Our Church also teaches that a preparation is expected. Preparation for Holy Communion can vary from person to person. The minimum preparation to receive Holy Communion is to fast from meat on Wednesday and Friday and not eat anything on the morning prior to receiving Holy Communion. For those who must take medication that requires food, they are permitted to eat that which is necessary for their health. Furthermore, the Church teaches us to fast on particular days during the year and especially during the four main fast periods. These four main fast periods are in preparation of holy days of the year, as follows:

December 13 - 24 (Nativity of our Lord) Great Lent (before Holy Week and Easter) Monday after All Saints’ Day through June 28 (the Apostles) August 1 - 14 (the Dormition of the Theotokos)

Each of us is encouraged to approach the Chalice to receive Holy Communion in love and in peace, gratefully and responsibly.
