Vocations Chalice Program Our parish has begun a new program called the “Vocation Chalice”.

which encourages families to pray regularly for vocations to the priesthood

and consecrated life.

Each week one family will receive the Vocation Chalice at Mass and take

it home with a promise to “pray for vocations” during that week. The family

would place the chalice in a prominent place in their home and would

gather together each day to pray, asking God to help raise awareness

for vocations at St. Luke parish and pray for more young men and women to answer

God's call. Prayer booklets will be given to the family with a different prayer for each

day. At the end of the week, the family would bring the chalice back to church so the

next family could take it home. We hope that through prayer, our parish may become a

source of vocations to serve the Archdiocese and the Church.

If you are interested, please sign up in the book in the Narthex. We encourage all fami-

lies of St Luke to continue to pray for vocations.

PROVIDENCE NEVER FAILS

A Letter from Msgr. Schaedel

Dear Parishioners,

Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the

Ascension. This is what is portrayed in

the mosaic behind our altar here at Saint

Luke. Our Lord rose from the dead then

remained on earth for 40 days until He

ascended to the right hand of His Father

in heaven. Calculating this places the

Solemnity of the Ascension on a Thurs-

day.

But for various reasons—not the least of

which is the shortage of priests—many

areas of the U.S. observe or celebrate this

holyday on the following Sunday. It’s like

having an anniversary on a Thursday. Yet

you have the party the following weekend

so that more people can attend.

Today is also Mother’s Day. We will offer

a special blessing for all of the mothers

present this weekend at Masses. How

I wish we still had our own dear mother

living. It’s been ten years now.

We honor Our Lady during the month of

May. Our SMRE (Sunday Morning Reli-

gious Education) students will have May

Crowning today (Sunday) at the beginning

of the 9:30 a.m. Mass. Our Saint Luke

School 8th graders (accompanied by the

whole school) will have May Crowning on

Friday, May 18, at 9:00 a.m. Everyone is

invited.

Last weekend we announced that our

associate pastor, Father Xavier Raj, has

been given a new assignment by Arch-

bishop Thompson. Effective July 5, 2018,

Father Xavier will become the associate

pastor at Saint Malachy Parish in Browns-

burg. At the moment, Father Xavier is

gone for six-weeks visiting his homeland,

India.

We will have a reception for Father Xavier

in the Father Courtney Room after all the

Masses the weekend of June 30-July 1

to thank him for his ministry here at Saint

Luke for the past two years and to wish

him well in his new assignment.

Our new associate pastor will be Father

Joby Abraham from the Diocese of Imphal,

also in India. I am not certain at this

writing when he will arrive. I will keep you

posted. In the meantime, Msgr. Stumpf

and I are holding down the fort!

You will recall we buried our dear Tom

Spencer in March. He died suddenly

while on vacation with all of his immedi-

ate family. Tom served on more service

projects, boards, and religious projects

than anyone I’ve ever known. Tom was

one of our most active and visible parish-

ioners. It will take 3-4 people just to take

over what he did around here. Tom was

also one of my closest friends.

One of Tom’s favorite adventures comes

up at the end of this month: the Vocation

Trip. As an active member of the Serra

Club (which promotes religious vocations)

and our own parish Vocation Commit-

tee, Tom spearheaded this trip for many

years.

The Vocation Trip is for the 7th graders.

The girls visit the Motherhouse of the

Sisters of Saint Francis of Perpetual Ad-

oration in Mishawaka (near South Bend).

The boys visit Saint Meinrad Seminary in

southern Indiana. Tom always went with

the boys. Several of Tom’s friends have

stepped up and will take over coordinat-

ing the seminary trip.

I’ve been trying to think of some way to

memorialize Tom Spencer around here

since his death. I’ve had several ideas.

One of them is to name this initiative the

“Tom Spencer Vocation Trip.” Along with

that I thought of establishing an endow-

ment which would help us cover the

expenses (mainly the busses) each year.

I was thinking about this one night. I re-

called that the Archdiocese of Indianapo-

lis is 37 counties and one township in one

county where Saint Meinrad Archabbey

and Seminary are located. Still wonder-

ing what might be best, it came to me that

the county where Saint Meinrad lies is

Spencer County!

The Holy Spirit did His job! We are

establishing a Tom Spencer Vocations

Trip Endowment to help fund these trips

for our youngsters into the future. If you

want to be part of this memorial to Tom

Spencer here at Saint Luke, no gift is too

small (or too large). Just send a check

made out to “Saint Luke” to the parish

I’m glad you said “do you think?” Be-

cause like most of my answers, it’s purely

personal opinion. I would advise her or

anyone else to take Latin.

Now some people will think I say this be-

$'<4%&0=5&'&;3+%4.&'()&>'.+(&+4&.2%&!"#$+',&language of the Church. Not so! I took

Latin and I cannot tell you how helpful

it is to me in learning other languages I

studied like German, Italian and especially

English. Latin is immensely helpful for

vocabulary.

Spanish gets lots of attention these

days because of the large number of

Spanish-speaking people coming into

our country. I think that’s going to be a

relatively short-lived phenomenon. Other

language speakers who come to the U.S.

will have to learn English if they want to

get anywhere. There is no way around

it. English will remain our predominant

language.

Of one thing I am convinced; of one thing

I am certain: Providence never fails!

far had never failed us,

Everyday Stewardship

In the Church, we observe a liturgical calendar that takes

us through the life of Jesus and highlights fundamental

doctrines of our faith. Starting with this Sunday, our obser-

vance of the Easter Season continues for one more week

until the celebration of Pentecost. While many outside of

the Church only see Easter as a one-day celebration, we

celebrate for an entire season, much like we do during

Christmas as well. Of course, this calendar only serves to

remind us and point to greater realities.

We are not called to be more generous at Easter or

Christmas than we are on other days. We do not choose

to love more during one time of the year. The fact is that

Jesus is alive right now and at all times is calling us to

give of ourselves.

When we make an intentional decision to follow Jesus

and adopt a stewardship way of life, we commit ourselves

to this journey 365 days a year. We are an Easter people

at all times. The high and low points of our journey are

not tied to a liturgical year, but instead to our own experi-

ences of life and shortcomings. A season or holiday may

make it easier to have a giving attitude, but we need to

do the same when little around us is pointing us in that

direction. It is sometimes when few are paying attention

that love and generosity are most needed.
