Thank you for your generous support!

National Needs Combined Collection NEXT WEEKEND, July 17-18, is the collection for the National Needs Combined Collection. This collection makes it possible to continue strengthening Catholic faith, values and education through the Catholic Communication Campaign’s television, radio and print messages. It helps support some of the poorest dioceses in the country that depend on annual collections.

Through vital evangelization programs, the Black and Indian Home Mission provides aid to some of the neediest African-American and Native American communities. It enables them to insure the highest standards of Catholic education through The Catholic University of America, which provides an academically rigorous education to nearly 7,000 students each year. Every donated dollar directly supports financial aid for students from dioceses across the country, including ours.

Your generosity will help us spread the Good News! Envelopes are in the pews. Please make checks payable to St. Luke Church. Donations may be deposited in the regular collection.

Jesus in the gospel instructed His Apostles to make no provisions for their missionary work. Because the Lord Himself provides

well for them through the people they serve. The Lord wanted them to trust in His Divine Providence.

If the apostles would teach the people to trust in the Lord, they first have to practice what they preach. So, the Lord’s instruction is clear: to take nothing for the journey but a walking stick— no food, no sack, no money in their belts. They were, however, to wear sandals but not a second tunic.

His instruction also means that they take only Jesus in their missionary work. If they were to proclaim the Good News in the name of Jesus, they must carry nothing else and no one else but Jesus.

Our Lord knew well that there is a human weakness to rely solely on oneself and to be in control of every situation so as to gain success. Jesus wanted them to realize that since they would be proclaiming Him, they had to take only Him so that people would receive no one else but the Lord.

When we come together to celebrate the Lord every Sunday and receive His Word and His Body and Blood, He then sends us out like the apostles at the end of the Mass to share Him to others, especially to those who have fallen away from the faith.

My Dear Parishioners,

I thank God for being appointed as your new administrator. I am excited to begin our journey together as we grow in faith and holiness when we celebrate His wonderful and abiding presence in His Word and in the Sacraments.

I am grateful to all of you because since the beginning of this month you have made me feel so welcomed and accepted in your faith community. I saw then how blessed and beautiful our community is here at St. Luke’s. I am humbled to succeed my classmate, Fr. Mark Strader, who had been your pastor and shepherd for the past twelve years. I intend to continue and build on all the great things that he has accomplished here with you.

To give you a short background of myself, I was born in the Philippines in a family of seven children. I am the youngest of the seven children. After graduating from Sta. Clara Parochial School, I entered Our Lady of Guadalupe High School Seminary in response to God’s call to the priesthood. Then I continued my seminary formation as a college seminarian in San Carlos Major Seminary in Makati, Rizal.

In February 1987 just after the Peaceful Revolution in EDSA, I migrated to Los Angeles to continue my seminary formation in St. John’s Seminary in Camarillo. After 4 years of theological studies I was ordained on June 8, 1981 by Cardinal Roger Mahony in St. Vibiana’s Cathedral in Los Angeles with eleven other deacons, two of which are known to you – Fr. Mark Strader and Fr. Paul Vigil. My first assignment as a parochial vicar was St. Anthony Church in Oxnard. Then I was transferred to St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church in Rowland Heights. My next assignment as a parochial vicar was Sacred Heart Church in Lincoln Heights. In 2005 I was appointed as administrator of Sacred Heart Church in Altadena. In July 2007 I was transferred to St. Anthony Church in El Segundo to serve as administrator for the first two years and was later installed as its pastor for the next twelve years.

I enjoy leading pilgrimages to many pilgrim sites, especially the Holy Land and Lourdes, France. I also enjoy organizing retreats and days of prayers. I also like spiritual and inspirational readings, cooking, designing liturgical environments, and writing plays – one of which is Fides Ecclesiae – Faith of the Church, based on the lives of St. Kateri Tekakwitha and St. Pedro Calungsod and the most recent religious and Catholic play ever presented in Hollywood Pantages on February 10, 2010.

This past year was a very sad and challenging one because I lost my mother, Elena who was 92 years old on September 21, 2020 in Sylmar, California. Then in April 2021 I lost my eldest brother, Rodrigo in the Philippines after suffering from COVID-19 in just two days. With the help and support of my friends and parishioners in Saint Anthony Church in El Segundo, I was encouraged to accept these tragedies with hope and trust in the Lord. I believe that the daily 3 pm Divine Mercy Holy Hour which I started in my former parish in March 2020, at the beginning of the lockdown, was a great source of strength and grace for me and for others as well.

I look forward to meeting you as we continue to support and strengthen each other in facing the challenges of this present difficult time. I assure you of my prayers for you and your intentions as your spiritual father, especially commending to Christ’s Unfathomable Divine Mercy at every Mass your own and your family’s spiritual needs. God bless you!

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavens, as he chose us in him, before the foundation of the world, to be holy and without blemish before him. In love he destined us for adoption to himself through Jesus Christ, in accord with the favor of his will, for the praise of the glory of God’s grace that he granted us in the beloved.

In him we have redemption by his blood, the forgiveness of transgressions, in accord with the riches of his grace that he lavished upon us. GospelMk 6:7-13

Jesus summoned the Twelve and began to send them out two by two and gave them authority over unclean spirits. He instructed them to take nothing for the journey but a walking stick— no food, no sack, no money in their belts.

They were, however, to wear sandals but not a second tunic. He said to them, “Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave. Whatever place does not welcome you or listen to you, leave there and shake the dust off your feet in testimony against them.” So they went off and preached repentance. The Twelve drove out many demons, and they anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them.Response: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Reading IAm 7:12-15

Amaziah, priest of Bethel, said to Amos, “Off with you, visionary, flee to the land of Judah! There earn your bread by prophesying, but never again prophesy in Bethel; for it is the king’s sanctuary and a royal temple.” Amos answered Amaziah, “I was no prophet, nor have I belonged to a company of prophets; I was a shepherd and a dresser of sycamores. The LORD took me from following the flock, and said to me, Go, prophesy to my people Israel.”Response: The Word of the Lord.

Responsorial PsalmPs 85:9-10, 11-12, 13-14Response: (8) Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salvation.

I will hear what God proclaims; the LORD —for he proclaims peace. Near indeed is his salvation to those who fear him, glory dwelling in our land.

Kindness and truth shall meet; justice and peace shall kiss. Truth shall spring out of the earth, and justice shall look down from heaven.

The LORD himself will give his benefits; our land shall yield its increase. Justice shall walk before him, and prepare the way of his steps.

Reading IIEph 1:3-14 or 1:3-10

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavens, as he chose us in him, before the foundation of the world, to be holy and without blemish before him. In him we were also chosen, destined in accord with the purpose of the One who accomplishes all things according to the intention of his will, so that we might exist for the praise of his glory, we who first hoped in Christ. In him you also, who have heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and have believed in him, were sealed with the promised holy Spirit, which is the first installment of our inheritance toward redemption as God’s possession, to the praise of his glory.Response: The Word of the Lord.

LIFE, JUSTICE AND PEACE SPOTLIGHT

Another reason not to leave children in the carParents know the dangers of hot cars and leaving children unattended. Experts say there’s another reason to never leave children alone, in a running vehicle, even for just a few moments — carjackers. A car thief may see a running car as an easy target, but if he/she doesn’t know there is a child inside, the car thief becomes an unintentional abductor. In these cases, car thieves may panic, leaving the child in an increasingly dangerous situation. Take extra precautions to make sure your children are not left alone in a car. It is well worth the extra steps of getting them in and out of car seats and safety belts and taking them with you. For more information, visit https://www.missingkids.org/content/ncmec/en/blog/2021/theyre-stealing-more-cars-with-kids-left-in-them.html.

The Mass readings from Genesis this past week have highlighted our ancestors’ stories as migrants, strangers and refugees who moved about seeking a land to settle and a home to call their own. They risked everything for a better life.

Fr. van Thanh Nguyen, a professor of New Testament Studies and holder of the Bishop Francis X. Ford, MM, Chair of Catholic Missiology at Catholic Theological Union, Chicago, Illinois, tells us this about immigration. In the words of Fr. Van Thanh:

The Bible and Migrant Families

“I speak from experience: life as an immigrant is often very harsh. An immigrant is eminently vulnerable, relying always on the generosity of others and on the whims of nature. Currently, there are millions of immigrants who are displaced because of conflict, war and natural disasters.

Even though immigrants are often powerless, they are not nameless and faceless. They are human beings and should be treated with the dignity that has been divinely bestowed upon them. In the Bible, those who showed kindness to these folks did not go unnoticed, but were rewarded abundantly. Consequently, biblical writers remind us to treat the strangers and immigrants in our midst with respect and dignity (Exod 22:22, 23:9; Lev 19:33-34; Deut 5:15; 10:19), for to neglect the needs of these migrants makes one liable to punishment (Deut 24:14-15). Jesus memorably sums this up in Matthew’s famous judgement scene (25:31-46).

Migration is a major crisis of our era. Every day countless people are displaced or trafficked. This global phenomenon is growing in scope and complexity, affecting most countries, families, communities, and almost every aspect of modern life. Unfortunately, the world is witnessing an increasing level of anti-immigrant rhetoric and sentiments. Stereotypes and myths about immigrants have greatly fueled xenophobia and caused racial tension and unrest.

How should Christians respond to this troubled sign of the times? We need not be paralyzed by the complexities of the migration debate. Just when racial tensions and fear of foreigners continue to run high, we are encouraged to take the path that God has clearly shown – the way of hesed, tender-loving kindness.”

The Apostle Paul asserts the absolute equality of all people before God: "There is neither Jew nor Greek . . . for you are all one in Christ Jesus" (Gal 3:28). In Christ, the human race is one before God, equal in dignity and rights.

"You shall treat the alien who resides with you no differently than the natives born among you; have the same love for him as for yourself; for you too were once aliens in the land of Egypt." Lv 19:33-34

"For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me." Mt 25:35

How will we choose to respond to migrants in our midst?
