Of course not everyone has had an “ideal” relationship with their parents – but Mother’s Day is intended to be a celebration of life and everything that is right and good about motherhood. Part of the how’s and why’s of Mother’s Day is the gift of life that comes to every man, woman and child because of mothers. Mother’s Day is also bigger than biology; bigger than birth-parents and birth certificates – even bigger than adoption papers. Every woman has the God-given opportunity to demonstrate love to and for children – especially for those children who may experience the emptiness of a less-than-ideal relationship with their own mothers. While there will be many ladies who will not get a card in the mail this May 13 th from a son or daughter, (and many men who will not receive any special recognition on Father’s Day in June) all of us begin each day of life with the opportunity to love others. This year, Saint Luke is receiving a special Mother’s Day love offering for Laura and Mickey Fedak’s youngest daughter, Madison, age five, who was diagnosed with bone cancer in her right leg on April 11, 2018. Madison has already started chemotherapy and her treatment and future surgeries will continue through the summer months and into the fall. There will be special offering envelopes in Sunday’s bulletins for any amount anyone might wish to see go as a gift to the Fedak’s. Also, there is a sign-up sheet posted below the “Flower Calendar” by the church office door for individuals and/or families to sponsor a Wednesday supper to be delivered to the Fedak’s. By providing a Wednesday night meal, we’re helping the family spend more time together, because (on their “normal” schedule) Madison will spend Thursdays at Levine Children’s Hospital on Charlotte for treatment. As appropriate, updates about Madison’s progress with her treatment will be shared. Her pediatric oncologist team says that her condition is curable – but the days and weeks ahead will be difficult for her, Mickey and Laura, and for Madison’s big sister, Riley and the rest of their family. Thank you to one and all for your willingness to pray for the Fedak’s. What a privilege it is to help bear one another’s burdens and to lift one another up before the Lord. Regardless of the time or season of life, it is wonderful to belong to a church like Saint Luke. I know you’ll be ready to respond as specific opportunities to love and serve arise. YOUTH NEWS

What would you do? Kim was packed and ready to go on the

Walk to Emmaus weekend this month. At

the last minute, the coach scheduled

Senior Night for Ashley’s soccer team at

SHS. Just like any mom, Kim was ready

to cancel her weekend and enjoy that

night with her daughter, Ashley. Ashley,

however, had been on Chrysalis weekend

3 times. Once as a new caterpillar, and

twice as a worker. She will tell you that

the weekend changed her life. She met

the Lord during her first time on

Chrysalis. She KNEW what a gift Emmaus

would be for her mom. Spending 3 days

with Him away from the distractions of

home would bring her to a closer walk

with God, and allow her to experience

HIM like she never had before. As we are

preparing this newsletter, Kim will

hopefully be on her way to a weekend

that she will never forget.

Ashley sacrificed one night with mom,

but gave her so much more.

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Matthew 6:33

Dear Saint Luke Church Family,

I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you all for

being so supportive and welcoming to me in these past

3 years as the Children’s Ministries Coordinator and

these past 6 years as a member of this church. I am

excited about my new adventures to come, however, I

am sad to see this chapter of my life come to a close. I

am truly going to miss every single one of you when I

move to Maryland. I wish you all the best and will

continue to keep you all in my thoughts and prayers.

Love,

Leah Hixson
