126. We can also look to the great tradition of monasticism. Originally, it was a kind of flight from the world, an escape from the decadence of the cities. The monks sought the desert, convinced that it was the best place for encountering the presence of God. Later, Saint Benedict of Norcia proposed that his monks live in community, combining prayer and spiritual reading with manual labor (ora et labora). Seeing manual labor as spiritually meaningful proved revolutionary. Personal growth and sanctification came to be sought in the interplay of recollection and work. This way of experiencing work makes us more protective and respectful of the environment; it imbues our relationship to the world with a healthy sobriety.
127. We are convinced that “man is the source, the focus and the aim of all economic and social life”. Nonetheless, once our human capacity for contemplation and reverence is impaired, it becomes easy for the meaning of work to be misunderstood. We need to remember that men and women have “the capacity to improve their lot, to further their moral growth and to develop their spiritual endowments”. Work should be the setting for this rich personal growth, where many aspects of life enter into play: creativity, planning for the future, developing our talents, living out our values, relating to others, giving glory to God. It follows that, in the reality of today’s global society, it is essential that “we continue to prioritize the goal of access to steady employment for everyone”, no matter the limited interests of business and dubious economic reasoning.
128. We were created with a vocation to work. The goal should not be that technological progress increasingly replace human work, for this would be detrimental to humanity. Work is a necessity, part of the meaning of life on this earth, a path to growth, human development and personal fulfilment. Helping the poor financially must always be a provisional solution in the face of pressing needs. The broader objective should always be to allow them a dignified life through work. Yet the orientation of the economy has favored a kind of technological progress in which the costs of production are reduced by laying off workers and replacing them with machines. This is yet another way in which we can end up working against ourselves. The loss of jobs also has a negative impact on the economy “through the progressive erosion of social capital: the network of relationships of trust, dependability, and respect for rules, all of which are indispensable for any form of civil coexistence”. In other words, “human costs always include economic costs, and economic dysfunctions always involve human costs”. To stop invesHng in people, in order to gain greater short-term financial gain, is bad business for society.

126. Recojamos también algo de la larga tradición del monacato. Al comienzo favorecía en cierto modo la fuga del mundo, intentando escapar de la decadencia urbana. Por eso, los monjes buscaban el desierto, convencidos de que era el lugar adecuado para reconocer la presencia de Dios. Posteriormente, san Benito de Nursia propuso que sus monjes vivieran en comunidad combinando la oración y la lectura con el trabajo manual (ora et labora ). Esta introducción del trabajo manual impregnado de sentido espiritual fue revolucionaria. Se aprendió a buscar la maduración y la santificación en la compenetración entre el recogimiento y el trabajo. Esa manera de vivir el trabajo nos vuelve más cuidadosos y respetuosos del ambiente, impregna de sana sobriedad nuestra relación con el mundo.
127. Decimos que « el hombre es el autor, el centro y el fin de toda la vida económico-social». No obstante, cuando en el ser humano se daña la capacidad de contemplar y de respetar, se crean las condiciones para que el sentido del trabajo se desfigure. Conviene recordar siempre que el ser humano es « capaz de ser por sí mismo agente responsable de su mejora material, de su progreso moral y de su desarrollo espiritual». El trabajo debería ser el ámbito de este múltiple desarrollo personal, donde se ponen en juego muchas dimensiones de la vida: la creatividad, la proyección del futuro, el desarrollo de capacidades, el ejercicio de los valores, la comunicación con los demás, una actitud de adoración. Por eso, en la actual realidad social mundial, más allá de los intereses limitados de las empresas y de una cuestionable racionalidad económica, es necesario que «se siga buscando como prioridad el objetivo del acceso al trabajo por parte de todos».
128. Estamos llamados al trabajo desde nuestra creación. El progreso tecnológico no debe reemplazar el trabajo humano porque la humanidad se dañaría a sí misma. El trabajo es una necesidad, parte del sentido de la vida en esta tierra, camino de maduración, de desarrollo humano y de realización personal. Así, ayudar a los pobres con dinero debe ser siempre una solución provisional para resolver una emergencia. El gran objetivo debería ser siempre permitirles una vida digna a través del trabajo. Pero la orientación de la economía ha propiciado un tipo de avance tecnológico que reduce costos de producción con la disminución de los puestos de trabajo, que se reemplazan por máquinas. Es un modo más como la acción del ser humano puede volverse en contra de él mismo. La disminución de los puestos de trabajo «tiene también un impacto negativo en el plano económico por el progresivo desgaste del “capital social”, es decir, del conjunto de relaciones de confianza, fiabilidad, y respeto de las normas, que son indispensables en toda convivencia civil». En definitiva, «los costes humanos son siempre también costes económicos y las disfunciones económicas comportan igualmente costes humanos». Dejar de invertir en las personas para obtener un mayor rédito inmediato es muy mal negocio para la sociedad.

T he World Youth Parliament (WYP) is a permanent forum that encourages today’s youth to discuss and share issues affecHng their future. Main issues examined are communiHes, economy, educaHon, jusHce, law, peace, personhood, religious and civil liberHes, social and poliHcal equality, solidarity, work and environment. This year's topic is interpersonal relaHons. The conference is going to take place
between in August 2016 in Bejing (China).
Approximately 100-200 young people are expected. Students from Europe, North and South America (United States, Ecuador, Colombia, Chile, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil), India, Philippines, Thailand) and China are going to parHcipate. The organizaHon responsible for the conference is called "Juventud Idente" and is senled in Spain. It's occupaHon consists in realizing projects for intercultural exchange and promoHon of values, such as the World Youth Parliament.

There is an ongoing need for Catechists in our parish
program in every grade level. As bapHzed Catholics, we
need to grow in our own faith and spirituality and share
our faith with the next generaHon of Catholics.
What is a Catechist?
The word “catechist” literally means “to echo.” A
catechist echoes the Word of God to his/her young
disciples. We do not teach a subject, we teach a life-
style…the Catholic-ChrisHan, life-style.
What qualificafon do I have to have to become a
Catechist?
If you are a faith-filled individual, enjoy being with
children, are dedicated to the Catholic faith, and feel that
God is calling you to get more involved…you may be just
the person we are looking for.
Do I need any training?
Your training will depend on your background. Most
potenHal catechists do NOT have a degree in EducaHon
or religion or theology, therefore we will help you by
offering simple workshops to introduce you to topics
such as: Classroom Management, Lesson Planning,
Prayer in the Classroom, etc. The Catechist Manuals are a
tremendous help to the first Hme catechist. .
Do I need to get any clearances?
YES. In order to insure the protecHon of ALL our parish
children, we require our catechists to fill out naHonal
clearance forms, including: Criminal and Child Abuse
background checks. The parish will pay for these
clearances if you are volunteering for our program. You
must also anend a 3 hour workshop enHtled: ProtecHng
God’s Children. This workshop heightens your awareness
The central point of this Sunday’s readings is the believer’s a�tude with respect to Christ’s resurrecHon. The a�tude of the first ChrisHan community in Jerusalem is one of living in unity while holding all things in common, of living with joy and purity of heart, of being guided by the teachings of the Apostles, the Eucharist, prayer, and of praising the Father (Acts 2:42-47). These signs of love and unity make it possible that others be anracted to the community and become a part of it. Christ already has said: “This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another” (Jn 13:35). Conversion cannot be obtained by one’s own efforts; it is the fruit of grace, and Christ places as a condiHon that we are to love one another in order to receive whatever we ask the Father. Do we truly live that joy, that purity of heart, that unity of love characterisHc of the first community that would serve as an example for non-believers leading to their conversion by grace? The other a�tude is of those who, in order to believe spiritual things, want to see them with their own eyes, such as the Apostle Thomas. How different is the behavior of that other community that St. Peter praises because its members believe and love Christ without having seen him (1Pe 1:8). Christ calls them blessed because they believe in him without having seen him (Jn 20:29). The reason is simple: the vision that we can acquire by means of our senses is too small to contemplate all the spiritual reality found in Christ’s resurrecHon. One needs another type of vision, one much more profound, higher: It’s the vision of faith that the Lord provides, that brings us joy and purity of heart, that allows us to contemplate the most profound mysteries above our own natural lights.

SEGUNDO DOMINGO DE PASCUA (ABRIL 23)

El centro de las lecturas de este domingo es la acHtud del creyente ante la resurrección de Cristo. La acHtud de la primera comunidad crisHana de Jerusalén es la de vivir unidos y tener todo en común, la de vivir con alegría y sencillez de corazón, la de acudir a la enseñanza de los Apóstoles, a la eucarisla, a la oración y la alabanza al Padre (Act 2:42-47); este signo de amor
y de unidad es lo que hace que el Señor agregue cada día a la comunidad más miembros. Ya
lo había dicho Cristo: “Si os tenéis amor los unos a los otros, en esto conocerán que sois mis discípulos” (Jn 13:35). La conversión no puede obtenerse por el propio esfuerzo, es fruto de la gracia y Cristo nos pone la condición de amarnos
los unos a los otros para conseguir todo lo que pidamos al Padre. ¿Vivimos
verdaderamente aquella alegría, aquella sencillez de corazón, aquella unidad de amor de
la primera comunidad, que servía de ejemplo a los no creyentes para ser converHdos por la gracia? La otra acHtud es la de aquellos que, para creer en las cosas espirituales, quieren verlas, como el Apóstol Tomás, con sus propios ojos. Diferente es el comportamiento de aquella otra comunidad que alaba San Pedro porque sus miembros creían y amaban a Cristo sin haberle visto (1Pe 1:8). A estos llama Cristo “bienaventurados” porque creen sin ver (Jn 20:29). La razón es muy sencilla: la visión que podamos adquirir por nuestros senHdos es demasiado pequeña para contemplar toda la realidad espiritual que Hene la resurrección de Cristo. Se necesita otro Hpo de visión más profunda, más alta: es la visión de la fe que el Señor nos otorga, que nos deja alegres y sencillos de corazón, que nos hace contemplar los más profundos misterios divinos por encima de nuestras propias luces.
