Dear Parishioners:�

Thank you to those who stopped by last weekend to help us bid Joyce

Franklin farewell. It seemed as though Joyce was touched by the

presence of so many. Her daughter even arranged to have two of the

priests that Joyce worked with when she started out in Religious

Educa#on at Holy Family Parish in Dale City, present at Mass. We wish

Joyce well in her re#rement.�

�

Our new Director of Religious Educa#on will begin working this week. I

hope that you will join me in welcoming Emily Teter to Saint Luke

Parish. Emily is bringing with her some fresh crea#ve ideas for

engaging our children � and their parents � in the Catholic Faith. I

know that Emily will be in need of volunteers to assist her in

catechizing our young people. I hope that you might consider the

possibility of serving as a teacher or aide in the classroom this year. I

am grateful to those catechists who were already able to commit to

serving another year of service to the children in our parish.�

�

Next Sunday, August 15th, is the solemnity of the Assump#on. As you

are aware, the Assump#on is normally a Holy Day of Obliga#on, but as

it falls on Sunday this year, there is no addi#onal obliga#on. The

pilgrim image of Our Lady of Czestochowa will remain in the chapel

through the 15th. Many of you have told me how special it was to see

the image here at Saint Luke. �

MISSION APPEAL WEEKEND AUGUST 21-22 On the weekend of August 21/22 we will have a second

collec/on to support the annual Mission Coopera/ve Plan

ADULT BIBLE STUDY

Please join our Wednesday Morning

Bible Study beginning on Wednesday,

September 15! This year, we will be

studying the Acts of the Apostles, the

second volume of St. Luke’s great

work on the early Church. The Acts of

the Apostles tells the story of how the early Church was guided

by the Holy Spirit through challenges in its early missional

work, as St. Peter and St. Paul and other apostles teach about

salva/on through Jesus Christ. As always, we will consider

historical placement as well as related Biblical texts as we seek

to understand what this book means for us today.�

uncles, grandparents, godparents, pharmacists, physician

assistants, college students, managers, government workers,

military personnel, doctors, lawyers, veterinarians, realtors,

IT specialists, and contractors. Resources and training are

available. Adults working with children need to complete

OPCYP paperwork and a(end a VIRTUS Training Session.

HOW CAN I MAKE ZERO-WASTE PART OF MY LIFE? �

Many reports about industries and communi/es who are

achieving progress toward zero�waste and zero�landfill goals

can be found in the media and online. But what can I do in

my daily life to decrease my own contribu/on to the landfill

and to support a zero�waste goal? �

�

As I strive to avoid single�use plas/c and the seemingly

ubiquitous excessive packaging that surrounds us, I am

excited to learn that a new zero�waste store, Trace, is

opening in Vienna this September.

conscious of my choices and to seek out ways to be a be(er

steward of the giOs of the earth. �

�

Businesses that iden/fy as zero�waste typically offer

products with li(le to no packaging, invi/ng the shopper to

bring their own bags and containers. Offerings oOen include

dry goods as well as liquid items and range from foodstuffs

to homewares to cleaning products and personal care items.

Mason & Greens, in Old Town Alexandria, is an example of a

zero�waste store. �

�

In addi/on to dedicated zero�waste stores, packaging can be

avoided at local farmers markets and at the bulk items

sec/ons of MOM’s Organic Market, Good Earth Natural

Foods and Whole Foods, to name a few.�

�

Zero�waste is an approach that works toward re�thinking

how all resources are treated through the en/re use�cycle,

beginning with resource iden/fica/on through produc/on,

consump/on, reuse and recovery of all products, packaging

and materials, finding ways to reuse or recover resources

without burning them and without dumping them in

landfills, the water, or the air.�

�

Every step each of one of us takes to heighten awareness

and to make decisions in favor of reducing consump/on and

avoiding waste makes a difference and helps us tread more

lightly upon our precious Earth.�
