The Most Holy Trinity May 30, 2021

——————————————————————————————————————————————————

Dear Friends, This weekend the Church celebrates Trinity Sunday. The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches: “The Trinity is One. We do not confess three Gods, but one God in three persons, the ‘consubstantial Trinity’” (253). In today’s reading at Mass, the final verses of Matthew’s gospel, Jesus says,

“All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and

of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age” Mt. 28:18-20.

Jesus tells his disciples to “Go,” and they certainly obey his word! The rest of the New Testament scriptures tell us about the travels of Paul and the other disciples to spread the

gospel and to baptize Jews and Gentiles alike. He remains with the Church today so that we can continue the work of baptizing in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. May we all do our part in preaching the Good News of Jesus in word and deed. Memorial Day weekend usually marks the first “unofficial” weekend of summer. While

many of us may enjoy a getaway with family and friends or a barbecue locally, it’s important for us to remember that Memorial Day is set aside every year to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving our country in the military. We will celebrate Mass at St. Luke at 9:30 AM on Memorial Day, and everyone is most welcome to come and pray for the men and women, especially those who are from our local

community, who died defending our country’s freedoms. The Whitestone Veterans Memorial Association has invited me to offer a benediction at their ceremony at 11:00 AM at the field on 149th Street and 15th Drive. They won’t be conducting a parade this year, but there will be a collation at the American Legion after the ceremony. All Whitestone residents are welcome.

It has been a long year with the pandemic, but it is time to start returning to more of our regular routines. As of the Vigil Mass at 5:00 PM next Saturday, the obligation to attend Mass will return to the Diocese of Brooklyn. More than an obligation, it is a privilege for us to be nourished by word and sacrament as we worship together as a community of faith. Next weekend we celebrate Corpus Christ, the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood

of Christ. What a wonderful occasion for parishioners all over Brooklyn and Queens to return to the regular practice of the faith. Of course, those who are ill, those who care for the sick, and others who have serious reasons to miss Mass are still excused from the obligation to attend Mass. I especially encourage the families who attend our school and religious education program to come to Mass regularly. Those who are being formed in

the faith in preparation for receiving the sacraments need to develop a regular habit of practicing their faith. That will only happen if parents take their role seriously, since you are the first and most important teachers of your children in the practice of the faith. I pray that we will soon see a vibrant community gathering for worship every weekend.

With love and prayers, Fr. John Costello

WHITESTONE — “God has big plans for you!” was recalled as the iconic quote of Msgr. John Tosi, the former pastor of 15 years at St. Luke’s Church in Whitestone. On a sunny Friday afternoon, crowds gathered outside the Queens church on May 21 to witness one plan that God had in store to remember the late priest’s life: the unveiling of the street sign co-named after him.

“As pastor, I know that at the very bottom of his heart, Msgr. John Tosi’s way was the way of Jesus,” said the church’s current pastor, Father John Costello, “and so that’s what I hope to model when I see that sign standing there and in my service to this community succeeding him as pastor, that we can all together continue the work of Jesus and make it His way.”

Cheers and claps erupted as the crowd counted down the unveiling of Msgr. John C. Tosi Way on the corner of Locke Avenue and Clintonville St. Guests, which included his family and friends, erupted in joy from the unveiling, which led to more cheers and clapping. People at the ceremony lined up outside the church and rectory and took out their smartphones to capture the moment.

The event was the culmination of months of planning by local Councilman Paul Vallone who serves in the 19th District, which includes Whitestone. Vallone proposed the idea of the street co-naming to the city

Anyone who walks nearby St. Luke’s rectory on the corner of Locke Avenue and Clintonville St. in Whitestone, will now get to look up and see the name of the parish’s beloved former pastor. That’s because, on May 21, the

intersection was co-named Msgr. John C. Tosi Way, after the former pastor who served at the parish for 15 years, from 2005 until his death in May 2020. (Photo: Currents News/NET-TV)

council in October 2020. In December, nearly seven months after the late priest passed, the city council officially approved the plan.

Larger than life

The councilman referred to Msgr. Tosi as “larger than life.”

“He micromanaged with love and a passion that you don’t often see anymore,” Vallone said. “It’s a beautiful way to celebrate spring and his legacy.”

Msgr. Tosi, 73, lived, was educated, and served — more than 45 years in the diocese — in Queens for most of his life. He was born in Flushing and attended St. Ann’s School. He attended Msgr. McClancy H.S. in East Elmhurst and then went on to study at Cathedral College in Douglaston. For his seminary for-mation, he attended Immaculate Conception Seminary in Huntington. He was ordained in May 1973 by Bishop Francis J. Mugavero at St. James Co-Cathedral in Downtown Brooklyn.

He served as pastor at St. Luke’s from January 2005 until his death in May 2020.

Father Thomas V. Doyle, a long-time friend and pastor of Good Shepherd Church in Sheepshead Bay, told The Tablet last year how Msgr. Tosi rebuilt St. Luke’s Church and made many renovations to the Queens parish based on his experiences with the Diocesan Liturgical Commission.

“We remember at his 40th-anniversary celebration — when he was asked about how he wanted to be remembered — he said, ‘I tried to be a good priest. I tried to bring people to Christ’ ” Father Doyle recalled. “I think that’s how people will remember him.”

Saint Luke School

This past Monday, May 17th was World NF Awareness Day. Students brought in donations to aid in research for a cure for neurofibromatosis. Class 3-1 was

especially curious about NF since a fellow classmate lives with the condition on a daily basis. To better empathize with our classmate, the students took turns

experiencing what it’s like to live with NF. They all saw how difficult or uncomfortable seemingly easy tasks became. Although they were able take off the ankle weights and

not be in pain when doing jumping jacks, take off gardening gloves to make tying shoes a lot quicker, remove their sticker ‘spots’, or untie a foam block to make it easier

to walk, they came to the realization that those with NF can’t do the same. We all learned a lot with this lesson and hope for a cure.
