As our world is bursting with excitement these last days before Christmas, the Church presents us with two expectant mothers, bursting with the excitement of their pregnancies. We refer to the scene as the Visitation. Spiritual writers have often said that Mary’s first act as the mother of the Savior is to bring His love and mercy to her kinswoman, Elizabeth. This meeting of the two expectant mothers has a deeper significance than just being an example of charity. It is the Old Testament pointing to the New Testament. Elizabeth was the wife of Zechariah, a priest of high regard in the Temple of Jerusalem. She, in her pregnancy, represents the best of the ancient chosen people of God. The Temple was a sign pointing to God. Elizabeth’s body was like that ancient Temple. Her body contained the one who would point out the Lord to the world. John the Baptist, within Elizabeth, leapt for joy in the presence of Jesus within Mary. John, the last of the ancient Israelite prophets became the first of the Christian prophets pointing to the one he would later call the Lamb of God. He embodied and brought to a conclusion the Temple Tradition of Israel, the tradition of reminding the people that God is among them. Mary, the expectant young girl, was bursting with joy, not just for Elizabeth, but for the life within her. Mary enjoyed a unique possession of the Word of God within her. Mary proclaimed the Magnificat to Elizabeth, “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord.” And we have been saved because Mary trusted in God. We understand the importance of Elizabeth’s words to Mary, “Blessed is she who trusted that the Lord’s word to her will be fulfilled.” The meeting of Elizabeth and Mary is the pointing of the Old Testament to the New, the revelation of the Messiah to the people longing for a transformation, the message that we who have been chosen to make the Lord present in the world must, like Mary, say yes to God’s plans. For God works His wonders in those who trust in Him. Hail Mary full of grace the Lord is with thee. Blessed are thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb Jesus. May the Savior, whose birth we celebrate this week, visit your heart, your home, our Church, our Country, our world…once again. May He bless everyone of you with countless graces that He alone can bring.

You, and your loved ones, will be remembered in our Masses. Have a Blessed Christmas! Father Piekarski, Father Etim, Father Lewis, Deacon Bailey & Deacon Wuebbels and the entire staff and parish family of Saint John the Beloved Parish

-Fr. Joe

The 1p.m. Mass on Monday afternoons will be discontinued because of low attendance. The last Monday Mass will be on December 21. The Multi-Intentioned Mass, that we now offer at this Monday afternoon time, will be scheduled on a regular basis throughout the coming year and mentioned in the bulletin.

LITURGICAL INSIGHTS The “O” Antiphons

The Church’s rich liturgical celebration includes a particular tradition during the final week of Advent. From December 17 through December 23 during Vespers, the Church’s officially-sanctioned Evening Prayer, prayed by priests, deacons, religious, consecrated virgins and many laity daily, the antiphon preceding the Magnificat, Mary’s resounding song of praise to God, references a prophetic plea for the Messiah to come. This antiphon is also the Gospel Acclamation in the daily lectionary.

They are known as the “O” Antiphons, since each of the seven begins with the exclamation “O.” According to rc.net/wcc/antiphon.htm, “the antiphons add a mood of eager expectation to the liturgy that builds throughout the seven days and c l i m a x e s a t C h r i s t m a s . ” A c c o r d i n g t o CatholicShopping.com, “each antiphon ends with a plea for the Messiah to come. As Christmas approaches, the cry becomes more urgent.”

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ website (usccb.org) indicates that the Roman Church has been singing the "O" Antiphons since at least the eighth century… They are a magnificent theology that uses ancient biblical imagery drawn from the messianic hopes of the Old Testament to proclaim the coming Christ as the fulfillment not only of Old Testament hopes, but present ones as well. Their repeated use of the imperative "Come!" embodies the longing of all for the Divine Messiah.

The “O” Antiphons are sung one a day in this order: O Wisdom, O Leader, O Root of Jesse, O Key of David, O Dayspring, O King of all Peoples, O Emmanuel. In Latin, the first letters of each of the words following “O” in reverse order form the words ero cras, which is “the response of Christ Himself to the heartfelt prayer of His people: ‘Tomorrow, I will be there.’” (CatholicShopping.com).

The “O” Antiphons are more familiarly recognized in the Advent hymn, “O Come, O Come Emmanuel”, with each verse highlighting one of the antiphons. See hymn #38 in our missalettes.

The RE program has had a busy but wonderful Advent. On Dec. 1st, our 3rd through 8th grade students received the Sacrament of Reconciliation and on Dec. 8th we celebrated the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. Both of these special evenings allowed the students to experience the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Communion in a very special way. Celebrating the sacraments is such a joyful experience for our students. Several students of our Religious Education program served as altar servers, lectors and gift bearers. What a wonderful witness they gave to our community.

Please remember that our last class for Tuesday programming is December 15. We will resume classes on January 5. Our last Sunday class is December 20 and we will resume Sunday morning programming on January 10. The office will be closed beginning December 21 until January 4. We will be checking phone messages and emails throughout the holiday.

For the Year of Mercy, St. John the Beloved will offer “Wisdom & Works of Mercy”, a program by Fr. Michael E. Gaitley, MIC.

The program aims to help us take our wisdom and our faith as inspiration to works of mercy in our families, parishes, and communities. This class provides insights into the relevance of the Trinity in our daily lives, and helps us to put our faith into action. Each week we intend to invite a charity from our community to explain their works and show us how we might be able to help them with our Time, Talent, and Treasure. “Whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.”

Beginning January 7 we will meet Thursday evenings from 6:30 until 8:00 for 11 sessions. Registering in advance will help us plan facilities and materials. For further information, to sign up for the meetings, and to order books, contact Deacon Dennis at 302-981-4567 or [email protected].

St. John the Beloved will offer “The Book of Isaiah”, a program by Fr. Mitch Pacwa, a popular host on EWTN. This book has been called “The Fifth Gospel” and “The Gospel of

the Old Testament”. It includes the following quotes: “Behold a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and call His name Immanuel” and “He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities, for He Himself is the Prince of Peace”. However, unlike the four Gospels, it was written more than 700 years before the birth of Christ. Beginning January 5 we will meet Tuesday evenings from 6:30 until 8:00 for 26 sessions. Registering in advance will help us plan facilities and materials. For further information, to sign up for the meetings, and to order books, contact Deacon Dennis at 302-981-4567 or [email protected].

Meet the RCIA Candidate Christina Palmer

I am an adventurer with an incredible fascination for this amazing world. I have such gratitude for all of the blessings God has presented in my life. I am the daughter of two incredible parents who have raised me to be a loving and sincere person. I am a sister and soon to be sister-in-law to a great brother and his fiancé. I am employed by the City of Newark Parks and Recreation Department as a Recreation Specialist and Coordinator of Volunteers. I am also an Educator, Special Events Building Coordinator and Sailing Crew Member for the Kalmar Nyckel Foundation, the Tall Ship of Delaware. I am a hiker, runner, SCUBA diver, kayaker, camper, artist, photographer, volunteer, and naturalist. I am a University of Delaware Graduate with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Environmental Science, Marine Ecosystems Concentration. My family and my fiancé have been the biggest influences in my journey of faith. I am blessed with a family that prays together every day and supports my dreams. I met my fiancé Adam at the University of Delaware. The two of us connected through our passion for the environment and helping others. He is a devout Catholic and introduced me to St. John's in 2012. I admire his individuality, his strong devotion to his faith in Christ how he is true to himself. He is incredibly supportive and through this journey we are strengthening one another and enjoying every minute. The RCIA process has very much reinforced my awareness of God's presence. I am thankful for this learning process in understanding more of Him and living for Him. I am also thankful for this amazing community. The overall experience has been such a joy and a gift from God. With each day, I feel as if I find myself through Christ and His continuous grace. The RCIA process has helped me in understanding the significance of each part of Mass. I learn so much with every Mass I attend. I have always felt welcome at St John's and I am excited to be a part of this universal faith.
