The Home of Lifestyle Interiors

STARBUY

Decorating your home for Christmas has long moved on from the classic holly berry red and green palette - so the HomeShed Creative Team has put together the best of the Christmas décor trends and accessories for 2015, plus their favourite stylist tips to dress your home for the festive season… Styles may come and go, but the inspiration behind Christmas get-togethers stays constant: family, friendship, love and home… “Dressing our homes for the festive season gives us the perfect excuse to release our creative inhibitions to indulge in a bit of bling and glam”, explains HomeShed’s Creative Director, Lucie Howard. Extra-large silver reindeer antlers are a key trend this Christmas and make an absolutely stunning room statement on a mantelpiece, especially when combined with candles of different heights positioned between the antler tines. In fact reindeers in any size and can be seen adorning cushions, candles and as ornaments this year. Similarly, giant silver acorns, pine cones and silver walnuts placed in large pewter bowls on a coffee table add a stylish, understated elegance to your room. Gold is enjoying a glittering resurgence in popularity across all home interiors this winter, which not surprisingly has translated into gold Christmas accessories. For those who find pure gold a dash too glitzy, try tempering it with silver mercury glass to soften the overall effect. Danish design house Lene Bjerre have subtly embraced the gold trend this season with hand-painted gold wood stars and hand-blown glass tea lights in pale gold and copper gold hues. These rustic votive candles look fabulous together on a tray or a windowsill and give your room a nostalgic candlelit warmth.” The complete Lene Bjerre Christmas collection including tree and table decorations, home accessories, candles, lanterns, cushions, lamps, throws, voiles, table linen and runners, tableware and crystal is available at the HomeShed. “Miniature artificial fir Christmas trees were a very popular table centrepiece last year and for 2015 they have reached Lilliputian dimensions to allow clusters of them along a table runner. We love using them around candles inside lanterns to create a sense of winter wonderland enchantment…”

Dressing up for

Christmas

Extra-large silver reindeer antlers are a key trend this Christmas and make an absolutely stunning room statement on a mantelpiece or as a table centrepiece with colour themed candles.

Room fragrance plays a key role in creating a warm, welcoming ambiance in your home. HomeShed’s gorgeously scented artisan candles are made by French company Durance in Provence, using pure essential oils in wintery blends of gingerbread, spruce, holly and red berry that instantly capture the essence of Christmas. Their orange and cinnamon wood-wick candles smell divine and the crackling wood flame echoes the seasonal spirit. In dark, chilly nights candlelit lanterns are the perfect romantic accent to your home. final festive tip is to add a candlelit lantern or two to your doorstep and a wreath to your door to

welcoming entrance for your loved ones and guests… And of course to wish you a Merry Christmas from the HomeShed team! Create the ultimate Christmas interiors in your home with HomeShed’s designer decorations and accessories, furnishings, furniture and gorgeous gift ideas. Late night Xmas shopping evenings on Tuesdays and Thursdays until 8pm, plus enjoy free tea or coffee with every purchase.

You will need:6 pieces of square paper (cut down white copy paper will do, or something more fancy!)scissorsclear tapestapler

These 3D paper snowflakes so simple to do yet so effective, they look great hanging in windows for the ultimate festive look, they look stunning in white but equally effect if you use paper which is patterned or a different colour on the reverse. Enjoy!

1. Fold each of the 6 pieces of square paper in half, diagonally, fold the triangle in half again, noting where the folded "bottom" of the triangle is.

2. Cut 3 lines in the triangle, starting on the folded edge. Position the scissors along the bottom fold, and parallel to one of the edges going up to the top (your cuts should be somewhat diagonal). Cut almost all the way up to one of the side edges, but not quite. Keep about the same distance between each cut. When you unfold the triangle into a larger triangle, it should look like photo 1.

3. Open back out into the square as in photo 2.

4. For each snowflake, bend the tips of the inner-most flaps toward each other and curl with your fingers to give them shape. (No tape needed for this pair of flaps.) See photo 3.

5. Moving outward from the center, bend the next pair of flaps around in the opposite direction until they meet. Overlap ends and secure with double-stick tape, see photo 4.

6. Repeat with the next pair of flaps, bending them in the opposite direction. Do the same for each concentric pair of flaps, alternating directions each time and taping ends together. Continue on to the remaining 5 squares, making the snowflake parts the same way you did the first one, see photo 5.

5. Tape all 6 points together to form a snowflake,see photo 7 & 8.

TRendyFILLING  STATION  -‐  November  Report

What  an  evening!  A  Spiritual  event  not  to  be  missed.  That  was  the  view  of  everyone  who  braved  the  bad  weather  to  be  at  the  Filling  Station  in  the  Penmorvah  Manor  hotel  on  Monday.

Once  again,  the  Penmorvah  did  us  proud  by  producing  steaming  hot  coffee  necessary  for  that  evening  and  a  variety  of  buns  and  cakes  and  of  course  those  delicious  muffins.

The  evening  began  with  the  worship  music  of  Joff.  After  a  couple  of  lusty  songs  we  settled  down  to  hear  Roger  Mills’  life-‐changing  story.  However  this  story  was  not  of  some  sudden  conversion  that  we  so  often  hear,  but  a  steady  growth  into  mature  faith.  Some  rocky  moments  along  his  way,  but  the  gossamer  strands  of  faith  with  the  strength  of  steel  helped  to  steady  him  to  maintain  the  way  along  the  narrow  path.

A  couple  more  worship  songs  and  we  were  ready  for  our  speaker,  Martin  Cavender.  Martin  is  a  director  of  ReSource,  a  group  whose  vision  is  to  help  build  a  church  which  is  diverse,  local,  renewed  in  the  Spirit  and  effective  in  mission.  His  talk  was  entitled  ‘The  Word  of  God  –  what  does  it  mean?”

Martin  told  us,  with  illustration,  humour,  explanation  and  enthusiasm  that  the  word  of  God  is  more  than  the  words  in  black  and  white  we  find  in  the  Bible.  When  we  speak,  we  explain,  describe,  inform,  persuade,  discuss,  among  others.  God  often  speaks  like  that  to  us  through  the  Bible  but  God’s  word  is  more  complicated  than  that.

When  God  speaks,  things  happen.  He  spoke  and  the  world  was  created.  He  spoke  and  it  happened.  The  words  of  God  are  very  different  from  the  words  of  human  beings.  They  have  a  creative  power  that  our  words  do  not  have.

When  Jesus  was  born,  the  Word  became  flesh.  When  Jesus  spoke,  things  happened.  People  were  made  well,  storms  were  quelled  and  5000  people  were  fed  from  two  fish  and  five  loaves,  with  food  left  over.  Jesus’  words  are  the  living  expression  of  the  thoughts  of  God.  To  give  an  analogy,  if  we  think  and  speak  in  black  and  white,  Jesus  thought  and  spoke  in  colour.

What  about  the  Word  of  God  today?  As  St  Paul  says

The  word  is  on  your  lips  and  in  your  heart,  because  you  confess  with  your  lips  that  Jesus  is  Lord  and  believe  in  your  heart  that  God  raised  him  from  the  dead……  Faith  comes  from  what  is  heard  and  what  is  heard  comes  through  the  word  of  Christ.

Once  received,  the  Word  of  God  lives  within  us.  This  has  far  reaching  implications  for  us.  Through  our  relationship  with  the  living  Word,  we  may  experience  the  written  word  as  something  which  is  active.  It  means  that  we,  as  the  people  for  whom  the  word  was  spoken  and  written,  have  a  duty  to  continue  to  speak  it  and  pass  it  on,  for  it  is  the  gateway  to  life.

We  do  not  hold  a  Filling  Station  in  December.  Our  next  meeting  is  on  January  19th  2015  with  Howard  Peskett,  in  the  Penmorvah  Manor  Hotel.  All  are  welcome,  please  bring  a  friend  and  if  you  need  transport  please  ring  01326  378065

y Mums Mince Pies...

You will need:10 oz (285g) plain flour 6 oz (170g) butter3 oz (85g) caster sugar 1 oz (30g) ground almonds

Grated rind of half a lemon (unwaxed)15 oz (450g) mincemeat 1 egg yolk2-3 tablespoons iced water

TR

1. Pre-heat oven to 190ºC/375ºF (Fan 180ºC),Gas Mark 5 and lightly grease a tartlet tin.2. Sift the flour and rub into the butter until the mixture looks like breadcrumbs (by hand or electric mixer). 3. Mix in the sugar, ground almonds and the grated lemon rind. 4. Beat the egg yolk with the water and then slowly add to the mixture. 5. Mix to a firm dough, first with a knife and finally with one hand. It may be necessary to add a little more water but the pastry should not be too damp. 6. Wrap in clingfilm and allow to rest for 30 minutes before rolling out. 7. Divide the pastry in half and roll one half out thinly. Then using a cutter big enough to line the tartlet tins, cut the bases. 8. Put them into each space in the tartlet tin. 9. Fill each tartlet three-quarters full with mincemeat. 10. Roll out the remaining pastry and with a slightly smaller sized cutter, cut into circles to fit the tarts as lids or alternatively stamp into stars. 11. Dampen the pastry edges lightly and press the tops down, sealing the edges carefully. 12. Make a small slit with a knife for the steam to escape, not necessary if you have made stars. No glaze is needed with this recipe. 13. Bake for 15 minutes or until golden brown. Cool and store in an airtight container.

New  Derriford  Helipad  Will  Help  Save  Lives  in  Cornwall

Above:  Derriford  Hospital's  Existing  Landing  Site  seen  from  Cornwall  Air  Ambulance.  CORNWALL  Air  Ambulance  says  a  new  helipad  to  be  built  at  Derriford  Hospital  will  make  a  dramatic  difference  to  Cornish  patients.  The  hospital  –  the  South  West’s  Major  Trauma  Centre  –  announced  that  £1.7m  of  funding  has  been  agreed  for  a  purpose-‐built  helipad,  which  will  be  in  operation  by  Summer  2015.  The  announcement  comes  after  years  of  work  by  the  hospital  Trust  and  external  stakeholders  including  Cornwall  Air  Ambulance,  the  national  HELP  Appeal  and  Devon  Air  Ambulance.  Cornwall  Air  Ambulance  chief  executive  Paula  Martin  said:  “This  is  great  news  for  Cornish  patients  who  need  to  be  flown  to  the  region’s  Major  Trauma  Centre.  For  these  patients,  seconds  really  do  count.  “For  much  of  Cornwall,  the  only  way  to  get  a  patient  to  Derriford  quickly  is  by  helicopter  and  so  proper  landing  facilities  are  essential.  The  new  helipad  will  safeguard  our  ability  to  get  our  patients  to  the  Major  Trauma  Centre  fast,  no  matter  whether  that  is  during  the  day  or  after  dark.”  Cornwall  Air  Ambulance  and  representatives  from  the  hospital  Trust  took  the  appeal  to  Westminster  in  June  2014  at  the  Association  of  Air  Ambulance’s  All  Party  Parliamentary  Group  Reception,  where  the  campaign  received  support  from  all  of  Cornwall’s  MPs.  Ms  Martin  continued:  “We  are  immensely  grateful  for  the  support  this  appeal  received  from  our  local  MPs,  the  media  and  the  public,  and  want  to  congratulate  Plymouth  Hospitals  NHS  Trust  on  getting  this  campaign  to  the  point  where  work  can  now  begin  within

weeks.  “With  the  excellent  helipad  facilities  at  Treliske  and  spades  about  to  hit  the  ground  on  the  new  Derriford  Helipad,  Cornish  patients  will  soon  have  access  to  the  best  network  of  hospital  helipads  in  the  country.”    With  the  arrival  of  its  new  night-‐capable  aircraft  in  December  2014  Cornwall  Air  Ambulance  will  be  able  to  extend  its  operations  into  the  hours  of  darkness,  making  full  use  of  the  new  helipad  facilities  at  Derriford.  Left:  Cornwall  Air  Ambulance  at  the  Existing  Derriford  Hospital  Landing  Site.

Of all the seasons, winter requires the most care and preparation to ensure you and your family stay safe on the roads. Breakdowns are more common and potentially more dangerous during the winter months than at any other time of the year. It is particularly important to be prepared for the cold spells and difficult road conditions that can arise, especially when snow and ice are likely.

To give you one less thing to worry about this festive period pop in to Millers Renault where our trained technicians will carry out a free winter safety check on your car to get you ready for winter. This will take approximately half an hour. It is checks of the key features of your vehicle including lights, tyres, wipers and brake pads. Please contact Mike, Paul or Simon on 01326 373825 where they will happily book your vehicle in for its free check.
