MAKING A DIFFERENCE

“Where else but KET can you turn on the TV and see a program about something so unique to Kentucky that so few people yet know about — and have that information communicated by experts in the field — and yet be so accessible?”

— Dr. Richie Kessler, Campbellsville University biologist

“In terms of our parenting and our interaction with our kids, KET is definitely a priority. It’s a part of our life now.”

— Colmon Elridge, Scott County

“KET has been a great partner to provide us with high-quality, engaging instructional materials for our students.”— Reecie Stagnolia, vice president

for Kentucky Adult Education

THE GENEROUS FINANCIAL SUPPORT of our donors gives KET the resources to change lives every day. From the classroom to the living room, we provide access to educational resources for every Kentuckian. Please make a year-end, tax-deductible gift now to ensure KET can continue its mission. THANK YOU!

“KET has been a part of my life since I became a teacher 40-plus years ago. And KET never grows old. It is so modern — from technology to the programming — it truly stays with what’s new and what is current.”

— Donna Wear, Paducah educator

“You can turn on KET and see a symphony, or a string quartet, or a ballet, or a play. Art … is part of the human dimension. It’s part of all of us.”

— Jay Flippin, Morehead (1946-2014),musician, educator and mentor

“My child couldn’t relate to anything around him, there was no ground to communicate with him at all, no tools. But then suddenly, we had a place. We had Thomas.”

— Mary Hughes, who reached her developmentally delayed son, Parker, through

PBSKids programs like Thomas & Friends

WHAT A WONDERFUL TIME FOR WINTERPLEDGE

4 December 2014

What better way is there to kick off the holiday season than with

WinterPledge, KET’s year-end fundraiser, featuring programs to help you enjoy this special time of year? Mark your calendar now for an all-new program about Bing Crosby (1903-1977) who was, without doubt, the most popular and influential multi-media star of the first half of the 20th century. For more than three decades, through radio, film, television, and records, he reigned supreme. Bing Crosby Rediscovered: American Masters, premiering Tuesday, Dec. 2 at 8/7 pm on KET, explores the life and legend of this iconic performer, revealing a man far more complex than his public persona. We naturally think of Bing at Christmastime, but 37 years after his death, he remains the most recorded performer in history with nearly 400 hit singles. That’s an achievement no one — not Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, or the Beatles — has come close to matching. This program delves deeply into all of his remarkable work, and will surprise many viewers with a unique perspective on his private life. As you watch this and other WinterPledge specials — such as Downton

Abbey Rediscovered and Classic Hollywood Musicals — remember that part of KET’s mission is to open the window on the worlds of music, art, dance, and theater to seasoned audiences and new generations, as well. In this new special previewing the fifth season of Masterpiece’s smash hit “Downton Abbey,” relive treasured moments from previous seasons and relish video clips, cast interviews, and behind-the-scenes footage, which help answer some burning questions: Is Lady Mary ready for romance? Did Mr. Bates kill Mr. Green? What will become of Edith’s baby? Carson and Mrs. Hughes — will they or won’t they? KET is committed to allowing all Kentuckians, no matter their age and circumstance, the opportunity to watch and enjoy period dramas, science and nature programs, educational children’s shows, documentaries, and current events and news programming. And all of it is thanks to you! Because of your continued financial support of KET, we are able to present Doc Martin Behind the Scenes, The Best of 50s Pop and Celtic Thunder

Due to your generosity, programs like Suze Orman’s Financial Solutions for You are available so that you, and others, can set personal goals. KET guides viewers of all ages on a journey through life as a trusted guide for young children and support for parents and caregivers. We also provide tools for success for adult students — like obtaining their GED® and high-school equivalencies through our new Fast Forward online study system. We share the views and opinions of all kinds of people through our renowned locally produced public affairs programs, take you to exciting places around the world through the wealth PBS has to offer — and much, much more. GREAT SPIRITS

Two programs explore state’s bourbon, wine-making industries

Bourbon is booming in Kentucky and around the world. In the last two years alone, the number of distilleries has tripled, the number of people employed in the industry

has nearly doubled, and there are more barrels of bourbon aging in Kentucky than there are citizens of the Commonwealth. The new documentary Kentucky Bourbon Tales: Distilling the Family Business introduces viewers to the colorful characters who craft America’s native spirit, explains how bourbon is made, and details how the beverage became a global phenomenon. The program premieres Tuesday, Dec. 16 at 9/8 pm on KET. Drawn from more than 30 hours of interviews, the program is part of a multi-year effort to document the history of bourbon in the state through oral history interviews with master distillers and industry leaders. Kentucky Bourbon Tales also airs Sunday, Dec. 21 at 9/8 pm on KET2. Raise a glass later in the month with Unbridled Vines: Kentucky’s Finest airing Sunday, Dec. 28 at 3:30/2:30 pm on KET. This program shines a spotlight on the Commonwealth’s growing winemaking industry. In-depth examinations of 12 wineries and vineyards around the state feature interviews with winemakers, who outline their agritourism contributions. They also discuss the triumphs and challenges of growing grapes and producing quality spirits in Kentucky. Both programs air throughout the month on KET KY.

Former secretary of the treasury featured on ‘Great Conversations’ Get insight into the recent economy when former U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner discusses his book Stress Test, Reflections on Financial Crises with James Surowiecki, staff writer of “The Financial Page” at The New Yorker, in the next Great Conversations. The program, produced in partnership with the Kentucky Author Forum at the University of Louisville, airs Monday, Dec. 29 at 8/7 pm on KET. Geithner served as 75th Secretary of the Treasury and, in that office, played a central role in formulating U.S. domestic and international economic policy during President Barack Obama’s first term. Between 2003 and 2009, he served as president and chief executive officer of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Surowiecki, who tackles complex financial topics in his column, helps viewers understand Geithner’s work, which explains how oversight of banking and investments was broken before the recession, and the need for improved protection for consumers.

SHORT TAKES

Public television stations across the nation have begun airing Dropping Back In, the new four-part KET series focusing on the dropout crisis in the United States, bring-ing its inspirational message to hundreds of thousands of adults who need to further their education.

To date, the series has aired on more than 80 percent of all PBS stations — including major cities such as New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago.

Nearly 40 million adults in America – one in five people – don’t have a high school diploma or a GED® credential.

If you’ve been watching more KET and PBS programming lately, you’re in great company.

Ken Burns’ recent film, The Roosevelts: An Intimate History, reintroduced millions of Americans to Teddy, Eleanor and Franklin, earning PBS its highest weekly viewership in 20 years. You made the program popular in Kentucky, too. More than one million viewers watched the documentary over seven nights on KET’s statewide network.

And whether it’s the latest explora-tion of American history from Ken Burns, the drama and intrigue of Masterpiece’s “Down-ton Abbey,” the exciting discoveries of Ken-tucky Collectibles, or the many other inspiring programs on KET, we thank you, our generous supporters, for making it all possible.

We also invite you to check out the spe-cial line-up we’re presenting during Winter-Pledge 2014. Tune in, enjoy, and consider a year-end, tax-deductible gift to continue sup-porting the great programs you love, trust, and value. Call us at 800-866-0366 or donate online at KET.org

Wishing you and yours a very happy holi-days and wonderful new year.
