Dear Parents,

Another school year is quickly coming to a close and

what a year it has been?

Next year will be an exciting time for Silverton with

the building project to start in February.

Already we see our garage being built near the EAL

portable to replace the school shed.

Thank you to the many parents who volunteer

their time to help out with classroom programs

and school events. A special thank you to the

Parent Association members, who work tirelessly

to support our school. The children are loving

the new shade sails over the playground.

Thank you to the school councillors who have

made a formal commitment to ‘their’ school. A

big thank you must go to our staff, teaching and

non-teaching. They are a dedicated and

professional team who are extremely supportive

of each other and are committed to ensuring the

happiness and well-being of every child in the

school.

A special thank you to the children for their

industrious efforts, and the manner in which

they approach all aspects of their school life. We

can all be justifiably proud of our school and its

community!

Finally, a special mention to all our Year 6

students who complete their primary schooling

this week. Congratulations and we wish you all

the best as you commence the next exciting

stage in your life; secondary schooling!

On behalf of the staff, I wish all families a safe

and happy festive season.

Thank you for all your support over the year.

Amanda

By Ana Kitharidis

Read to or listen to your child read every day (between 10-20 minutes)

Tip 5- QUESTTIONS YOU COULD ASK BEFORE/ DURING/ AFTER READING A TEXT WHO Questions Who are the characters in the story? Who do you think this was written for? Why? Who do you think could help the character in that situation? WHAT Questions What do you think this story is about? What was your favourite part of the story? Why? What are the main ideas in the story? What happened in the beginning, middle and end? What could happen next? What type of text do you think it might be? (Fiction e.g. stories, scripts. Non-fiction e.g. books with in-formation about animals of things, called reports) Why? What would you do in this situation? What words would you use to describe each character? Why? What is the author’s message/ moral to the story? What do you now know that you didn’t know before? What other information do you want to know that is not in the story? WHEN Questions When do you think the story took place? Why do you think that? When might this happen to someone? When do we use this type of text? Why do you think that? WHERE Questions Where do you think the story took place? Why do you say that? Where would you find this type of text? Why do you think that? WHY Questions Why did it happen? Why did the characters behave that way? HOW Questions How does the story make you feel? How do you know it a narrative/ procedure/report/ script/play? How do you think you would help the character/s in that situation? How does the message in the text relate to your life? OTHER QUESTIONS Can you relate to any of the characters in the text? Which one and why? Does the setting change in the story? Do you agree with the author’s message? Is there anything about you or your life experiences that connects you to the story? We made a trolls vanilla cake in Discovery Time to sell. We raised money for the Royal Children’s Hospital’s heart kids. We sold slices of the trolls vanilla cakes at recess because Inayah’s sister Baseerah has a heart problem. Heart Kids helps kids that have heart problems.

We made $9.00 for Heart Kids.

During our group conversations we also explored how to use an apostrophe to clearly show what we

want to say. We looked at they are and they’re; is not and isn’t; did not and didn’t ; would not and

wouldn’t, and more. We also talked about the differences between they’re / there / their and his / he

is / he’s. We found one way to remember the difference between ‘their’ and ‘there’ is that you can find

here in there, which describes a place or position.

Once upon a time in the ocean's sea different kinds of magical fish lived in the magical underwater

world. There were also lovely shapes in the sea. Those shapes were forgotten for days, but one day

those shapes turned into a magical potion. The three big shapes turned into powerful water butter-

flies and the five circles turned into crystals. The crystals were shining underwater and sparkly rain

was falling into the ocean... NIKI

One of the many sophisticated pieces from the Grade 5/6 group:

Uncover your soul let the love come in, let the beauty within make the world spin, where are the

stars and the grass right below, that were once carried away to be stowed. The density in the heart,

the electric release, the hardened stone that came from beneath, the breeze from the south, the

light from inside, your veins will spark like a waterfall. Deprived of your home but led into true mean-

ing of life? CRISANNE
