PRESIDENTS’ MESSAGE
With winter comes the cold, But Council members are bold, We use the time to plan ahead,
Sometimes where others fear to tread, With no general meetings until the New Year,
We pursue Council goals without fear, Help battered women, support quality community affairs,
Knit hats and make blankets to show that we care, Help our country in any way we can,
Show Israel that we are its fan, Scholarships for high school students and needy kids
to go to camp, Like Miss Liberty, we hold up a lamp.
It’s not all work without some play,
Book clubs and trips build friendships that stay, We know that we need all of you,
But, think about it—you need us too.
Wishing all a happy ending to 2018 and a joyous beginning to 2019.
Shalom,
Brenda Greenberg and Janet Stravitz

MEMBERSHIP
As the end of the year approaches, we can look back and proudly review the many goals that we have achieved in 2018. With your support as members, we were able to participate in the Rockland Interfaith Breakfast Program and the Rhoda Bloom Kosher Pantry. We supported the Meals on Wheels homebound and Helping Hands, a program for the homeless of Rockland. We distributed high school senior scholarships and camp scholarships. We helped women and children begin new lives when leaving the Center for Safety and Change. Children were provided with school supplies through our Adopt-A-School Program. Our members participated in the Tales for Tots program, where volunteers read to toddlers in preschool programs, day care centers and kindergarten students in East Ramapo. The fleece blankets and teddy bears crafted by members were donated to the Department of Social Services for families in crisis. We donated Shalach Manos bags full of Purim goodies to the patients at the Rockland Psychiatric Center. We continued to keep Israeli families in our hearts through Yad B’Yad. And the list goes on and on! In short, your membership is vital here in Rockland County, across the nation and in Israel. If you have not already paid your dues this fiscal year, it’s not too late to make a difference. Please send your check for membership to Helene Leibowitz, 3 Bay Court, Spring Valley, NY 10977.
TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE AN IMPACT! Wishing every member and their families a 2019 filled with happiness and good health. Thank you for your past and future support, Shalom,
Gilda Miller (201-825-8904)

FUNDRAI$ING
Greetings & Felicitations ~ This is being written just after the terrible day in Pittsburgh; just before the midterm elections; just as we are thinking about our fundraising activities for NCJW; plenty of events to think about and reflect upon. Let’s do the easy part first. Here are some of the fundraising activities on the drawing board: A non-event Event; a Wine/Cheese/Dessert Social in a fabulous setting; Military Bridge; a Possible Pool Party; more Afternoons with NCJW. And the beat goes on!!!
If you have had your fill of all things negative, read the rest of this article and have your spirits lifted and have your faith in humanity restored. It’s a story about money (after all, this is under fundraising, but, oh, so much more!!!).
From “The Week” magazine: A 76-year-old shoeshine man who died last week left behind a big legacy of kindness. Every Tuesday and Thursday for 32 years, Albert Lexie would leave home at 5:50 a.m. and make a three-bus trek to UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. There, he shined the shoes of staff and visitors and donated all of his tips to “my kids,” as Lexie called the hospital’s young patients. By the time he retired in 2013, he had given $202,000 to the hospital’s Free Care Fund, which provides financial assistance to under and uninsured kids. “He is the perfect example,” said hospital president Christopher Gessner, “of how small incremental acts of kindness can impact millions of people.” Thank you Mr. Albert Lexie, we salute you and give thanks for your great kindness.

SHALACH MANOS 2019
Warm winter greetings to all our NCJW members! Hard to believe that December has arrived and with it the anticipation of Purim arriving in mid March! We know you are not thinking that far ahead and that is why you have Gwenn, Ellen and me to start the ball rolling and send you reminders along the way.
Paid up membership has added new members to our roster and you will receive both an order form for Shalach Manos online as well as a copy via snail mail. We urge you to return either ASAP to assure that your friends are included come March. The DUE DATE for your form is December 31st. As always, we end up making too many phone calls with a gentle reminder so please help us out this year and promptly return your form!
We look forward to greeting all those members who are not away at our pre planning and packing meetings as well as hoping that you will volunteer to deliver a small route before Purim. The tentative dates are as follows, please email or call to let us know you can help out:
Pre packing: Sunday Feb 24 Packing meetings: Thursday, Feb 28, Monday, Mar 4 and if needed Thursday, Mar 7 Delivery begins anytime after Friday, Mar 15 through Purim, Thursday, March 21
If you are going to be out of town PLEASE email me with your address or a package WILL be delivered to your Rockland address. Please let us know that you will be able to help out, this is our biggest “fun” fundraiser. We are counting on you all to support NCJW as we bring smiles to the faces of our NCJW friends when they receive their Shalach Manos bags.
And, if you are able, please include a donation for the 75 bags we make for RPC patients who are so appreciative.
Thank you in advance!

COMMUNITY SERVICE
Collecting Children’s Books December 5, 2018 General Meeting
Once again NCJW Rockland has taken on the challenge to provide each kindergarten child in East Ramapo Schools with at least one book to take home.
We will be collecting books from our members, and we will be collaborating with Barnes & Noble in Nanuet.
Please bring to the General Meeting on the afternoon of December 5th new or gently used children’s books that you would have given to your own children or grandchildren to enjoy. The books should be in good condition and for children from diverse ethnic backgrounds.
Dates and details about how you can help at the Barnes & Noble Book Fair and Book Drive will be shared in future emails.

Blankets for Newborns, Kids, & Adults
Join the fun and camaraderie in this easy-to-do project! (Optional: Bring scissors.) Next meeting:
Wednesday, December 12, 12:30 PM. at the home of Marcia Scheer, 46 Palisades Ct., Pomona. Please call Marcia 845-362-1429 to tell her what you’ll bring for Pot Luck lunch.
We continue to deliver cuddly fleece blankets to infants, children and teens in need, in addition to adults in long term hospital stays.
Volunteers Niki Plaut, Susan Steinfink and Cheri Adelsberg enjoy working with teens from USY at NCJC. Also volunteering were Brenda Greenberg and Rochelle Welsh.
Making fleece blankets is one of our community service projects that helps the homeless, abused and needy. As those who have worked on this project know, having a good pair of sharp scissors is very helpful. Today I took our scissors to be sharpened at:
X-Calibur Knife and Scissors Sharpening
who has a booth at the Nyack farmers market as well as other like venues. I explained our project hoping for a discount, to my delight he donated his time and skills and sharpened all our scissor at no cost.
Blanket Chair: Susan Steinfink (634-0864)
Rhoda Bloom Kosher Food Pantry
Volunteers are needed to assist with food distribution at the Rhoda Bloom Kosher Food Pantry, run by Rockland Jewish Family Service at the JCC. Upcoming dates are Sundays from 8:30 am to noon: December 9, January 20, and February 17.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Luggage for Freedom
Volunteers Marcia Scheer, Brenda Greenberg, Susan Grill, Judy Greenberg, and Merri Rosenbaum pack luggage. Rochelle Welsh joined them as shown below.
Thirty-six (36) suitcases filled with linens were donated to the Center for Safety & Change. Thanks to all who donated!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Due to the generosity of our members at the November General Meeting, we were able to donate a large supply of feminine hygiene products to women and high school girls who struggle with the high cost of these items.
In friendship, Co-VP’s Community Service Marcia Scheer & Rochelle Welsh

PUBLIC AFFAIRS
Keep our Courts Fair and Balanced
NCJW St. Louis spearheads a coalition that aims to keep our courts fair and balanced. We know that the judicial branch of government is critical to the issues we care about and that it is important that we have fair and impartial judges. The coalition is interested in both maintaining the Missouri Court Plan as well as ensuring that federal vacancies are filled with fair minded constitutionalists.
