It takes a great deal of courage to be a “True Christian.”

It means living away from “the world.”

It is making the unpopular decisions.

It is NOT going along with the rest of the crowd.

It is resting in the faith and care of the Father who sees to our every need and want. Oh, the joy!

Have you known this joy in your life?

The world is watching! Do you call yourself a Christian?

Just what do they see? Anger? Hate? Deceitfulness? Unforgiveness? Selfishness? Conceit? Haughtiness? Envy? Jealousy? A gossip? Are you two-faced? Have a judgmental spirit? Is a troublemaker? A liar? A thief? An adulterer? A fornicator? Etc..

These spirits have the power to destroy life and do so quite effectively!

Or...do they witness the outpouring of the Holy Spirit with; faith, love, peace, joy, charity, humility, kindness, meekness, tenderness, longsuffering, temperance, goodness, a laying down of ones life, honesty, commitment, purity and patience.

The works of the Holy Spirit have the ability to destroy sin and give life!

Sin is Sin my friend......there are no levels! One sin is equally as bad as another in God’s eyes!

We cannot call ourselves Christians but just maybe bend the rules here or there to suit ourselves.

The world is really watching all of us!

Please, don’t let Jesus down!

If He was here today He would weep bitterly for His people and the choices they are making.

Don’t be one of those who are so deceived! The cross carries with it a truth that only those who truly believe know.

They know this truth because they have SOUGHT after it, and then APPLIED it directly in their lives!

The world is watching!

The Dallas School Board brought Superintendent Mike Miles here from Colorado to run a system that has had its share of problems.

Mr. Miles has excelled in his professional career. Further, I believe that he is the right person to head the school system at this time. Calls for his resignation are premature and somewhat unfair.

It is unfortunate that he has had some people in his employ that did not have the concerns of the school system at the very top of their agendas.

Specifically, I am speaking of the administrator that seemed to be confused about whether or not she should be paid moving expenses once or twice. Fortunately, she has resigned, saving the Superintendent the unpleasant experience of having to dismiss her.

There are members of the public, and members of the board who are concerned about the increases in salaries that the Superintendent offered to employees he brought with him.

They want those employees to prove that they are worthy of the amounts they have been offered. They have suggested that such salaries be performance-based.

I am hopeful that Superintendent Miles will consider what the members of the board and some members of the pubic are telling him. In the end, however, the decision should be left to him. He is a proven executive and knows the consequences if he and members of his team do not perform. He and they will be out of jobs.

Most observers of the school system will agree that the children of our city have not been served well by those who have been charged to set policy for them in the past. Now, it is Mr. Miles’ turn.

I wish him every success. I am hopeful that this time next Christmas we will not be engaged in fights over educational policy, but that we will be celebrating the system’s educational successes.

The school-system mess

The World is Watching

Like the president of the United States, many of us were brought to tears after hearing news of the tragic shootings in the state of Connecticut.

Twenty young, tender, school aged children were murdered in cold blood by a young man only fourteen years their senior.

Fourteen of the murdered children were six years old and six of them were seven.

Six adults, school administrators and teachers, were also murdered.

The President spoke to the nation from the White House and the usually straight forward statesman was unable to complete a

sentence without wiping away tears that began to flow down his face.

His two daughters are not that much older than the young children who were killed.

During his remarks the President said that the nation was compelled to do something “meaningful” after this tragedy.

I am hopeful that by using the term meaningful, the President intends to introduce or support sensible gun legislation that will assist us in the killing rampage that is present in our country.

The young man who did the shooting in Connecticut took the guns from the home that he shared with his mother, Nancy Lanza, who was also killed in her home prior to the school shootings. It is believed that the gunman took his mother’s guns from their home.

The guns were purchased by her and registered in her name.

She was accustomed to taking her son target shooting and often talked with some delight about her gun collection to social acquaintances.

One of the weapons that the young killer had was an assault rifle and some reports said that all the children were shot in the head.

Why does anyone other than a member of the armed forces need an assault rifle? Friends of mine who are hunters say that they do not need them to hunt wild game.

Like the president I was brought to tears and like the grieving parents I believe that we need to stop this senselessness. We owe the murdered children more than simple rhetoric and tears!

MINISTER OF THE WEEK

CHURCH WOMAN OF THE WEEK

Dr. Curtis W. WallacePilgrim Rest Missionary

Dear Dr. Hollie,My daughter is 16 and has been dating this guy that I really liked until I found out he was older than I thought. They had been telling us that he is 18 years old, and while I was skeptical at first about letting her date an 18 year old, after listening to her and a few more people that there wasn’t much of an age difference, I let it happen. I got a phone call a few weeks ago from a girl he had dated in the past. She called to inform me that she had heard that he was dating my daughter, and she wanted to make sure that I knew that he was 23 years old because she knows him to be a liar, and figured he must be lying about his age if he was dating such a young girl. Of course, he has been. But now I am having so many issues because this child is “so in love” and I want her to stop seeing him as of right now. I have threatened to call the police on him, even though I’m not sure if I can, and she just swears she’ll deny ever being with him sexually. Which

brought up another issue because I was actually naive enough to believe that they were not having intercourse. I’m afraid that any decision I make at this point to have him removed out of her life will cause her to go into some kind of downward spiral. What is your opinion on this? How can I make this situation better with the least amount of damage to my daughter?

Mother’s HeartacheDear Mother, This is one of those tough parenting decisions that has to be made and your conscience must be your guide. The whole idea of parenting is about providing guidance and not allowing your child to make drastic life-altering decisions. Your daughter probably won’t be happy, but guidance is about maturity and where your child thinks she knows best, she does not. The bottom line is you know this is not something you want for your child nor is a 23 year old man the best match for a 16 year old girl. As a parent, we are responsible for administering tough love. However, it is a delicate situation because you don’t want your daughter to make any rash decisions, i.e. run away. If her father is available, have him to talk to this man and his daughter about the seriousness of this relationship. I wish you well. Did you know that God is the great magnet of the universe, full of spiritual power. Because of the drawing power of His deep affection for man, we find ourselves responding to His magnetic power, since we are creatures made in His likeness. Therefore, we are drawn to God in prayer. Prayer became companionship between God and man. This is to say that God is pouring out His heart to man and man is pouring out his heart to God. Prayer began when God spoke the first word. He said, “Let us make man.” And after he had breathed into man the breath of life and he became a living soul, man said “Abba, Father!” This is when the conversation and the companionship began.

John 3:16“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life

Everyone has a list for Christmas. Here in John 3.16 we see Jesus tell Nicodemus that he must be born again in order to see the Kingdom of God. In this wonderful verse called the Little Gospel we see God’s shopping list for all those who would receive the gift of His Son Jesus.

Why did Jesus have to become flesh and blood? Why did he come so humbly, live so lovingly and die so gruesomely? He did that all to purchase this Christmas list for you and me!

For God – The greatest decisionSo Loved -- The greatest compassionThe World -- The greatest inclusion

That He gave -- The greatest provisionHis only Son -- The greatest sacrificeThat whoever believes -- The greatest invitationShall not perish -- The greatest intentionEternal life -- The greatest gift

In2nd Corinthians 9.15 Paul gives thanks to God for his unspeakable or indescribable gift. That gift is salvation by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. So what is God’s Christmas list?

I. Unlimited kindness (Mercy)

“For God so loved the World”

Mercy is defined by Webster’s dictionary as “The act of sparing, or the forbearing of a violent action.”

Titus 3.5 says, “He (God) saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according

to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit.” Amen!It was the loving kindness or the mercy of God that spared lot from the fiery judgment of Sodom and Gomorrah.

Genesis19.16 says, “But he (Lot) hesitated, so the men seized his hand and the hand of his wife and the hands of his two daughters, for the compassion of the Lord was upon him; and they brought him out, and put him outside the city.” Amen! The mercy of God spared lot from judgment. You could say Lot did not get what he deserved because God had mercy on Lot and his family.

Why is mercy on God’s shopping list, because all of us are sinners. Romans 3.23 clearly says, all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Amen!

Here we find that the mercy of God did not begin in the manger. For God so

loved. Remember Genesis 1.1 In the beginning God. God was before the beginning so was God’s mercy. It did not come first in the manger it came first when he made all things.

This should be a place where you underline the world and replace it with your name. For God so loved. His mercy meets you and says I love you. II. Unmerited favor (Grace)

For God so loved. His mercy keeps from us what we deserve, judgment. His grace gives to us what we don’t deserve forgiveness. In the Bible it is almost overwhelming how many times love and giving are intertwined. For God so loved the world that he gave.

Since the 1880s, Dallas public schools have graduated students who would go on to become leaders in their community and beyond. Over the years,

many of those graduates have returned to their

communities to give back to Dallas ISD so new generations would have even greater opportunities for success. It’s a gift of giving.

With every decade, Dallas ISD alumni helped educate a new generation, students gained knowledge and skills needed for success, and Dallas grew and prospered. Thousands of Dallas ISD graduates—from philanthropists to presidential advisers and elected officials and from educators and entrepreneurs to athletes and artists—are today active volunteers in the school district they attended because they know that education paves the way for success. It’s a gift of sharing.

Numerous graduates, inspired by their teachers, have returned to the classroom as Dallas ISD teachers and school administrators. Still others, whose calling took them into business, medicine, law, or another field, are helping in their own way to prepare a new generation for future challenges. It’s a gift of remembrance.

Dallas ISD alumni tutor students, serve on advisory boards, raise funds, speak to student groups, provide internships and scholarships, and encourage other civic leaders to become involved in preparing new generations to lead the city. Like thousands of other volunteers, they contribute their time, effort and resources to the children of Dallas because they believe in public education and want to ensure that future generations are prepared to lead the city, the state and the country. It’s a gift of their time, talents, and treasure.

Thousands of outstanding alumni have graduated from District 5 high schools. Among them are actress and playwright Regina Taylor, a graduate of L. G. Pinkston, Texas State Senator Royce West and retired NBA point guard Spud Webb, alums of Wilmer-Hutchins High School. I am a proud Dallas ISD

grad of Franklin D. Roosevelt, as are city councilman Dwaine Caraway and Chief of Dallas Fire and Rescue Louie Bright III. All are gifts to the city, state and nation.

If you are a Dallas ISD grad and you want to become involved in educating our city’s future leaders, please visit our updated Web site—www.dallasisd.org/alumni. We like to hear how our alumni are contributing to their communities, and someday, we might tell your story.

In District 5 news,

District 5’s Judge Barefoot Sanders Law Magnet and L.G. Pinkston high schools and Dallas Environmental Science Academy, William B. Travis Academy, Barack Obama Male Leadership Academy, and T. A. Edison and O.W. Holmes middle schools are among 27 Dallas ISD schools whose students are learning the finer points of persuasion through participation in the Dallas Urban Debate Alliance. The non-profit Alliance works with district teachers to sponsor workshops and tournaments where students learn how to research issues, develop informed

opinions and defend those positions in debate. Experts say students who master debate skills become better public speakers and develop concentration, listening and critical thinking skills.

Students from across Dallas ISD will put their oratory skills on display at 11 a.m. Friday, January 18, 2013, at finals of the 21st annual Gardere MLK Jr. Oratory Competition at the Majestic Theater in downtown Dallas. District 5 schools that participated in the first round of competition include Clara Oliver, John Neely Bryan, William Brown Miller and Wilmer-Hutchins elementary schools. The finals will feature eight students from the 20 participating schools reciting their original essays on the topic, “If you could talk directly to Dr. King about your dream for our future, what would you tell him?” The event is free and open to the community.

I am available to meet with your group or organization to discuss Dallas ISD in general, and District 5 specifically. Contact me at 972-925-3718 or at [email protected]. Thanks for supporting Dallas ISD.

By Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson (30th Congressional District of Texas)

I would like to wish each of you

and your families a wonderful holiday season. It is my hope that grace and joy will fill your hearts and that the coming year will bring great blessings to you and to those you love.

This is recognized as the season of giving. During this time people give gifts to those who are close to them. There are even some who give to those who they do not know. There is a spirit inside of them that allows them to give beyond themselves.

Not too long ago, a member of the New York City Police Department witnessed a homeless man who had no shoes and socks sitting on a cold pavement.

He rushed to a shoe store and purchased a pair of boots for the man and knelt beside him as he placed them on his feet. The act was recorded by a

tourist, and people the world over saw it in newspapers, on television and on the internet.

The act of the police officer represented the goodness that is in all of us. While we live in a world that often appears harsh, goodness does exist in the human spirit, allowing us to give, and give unselfishly.

And that is what I wish all of us will continue to do during the holidays and throughout the New Year.

We must check on the elderly who live alone, help our young people as they struggle with the hurdles that life presents and volunteer with charities that reach out to assist those who struggle to survive.

As an elected official, I promise you the gift of continued meaningful public service. I promise you that I will look after the best interests of those who elected me and others who live in Texas and in our country.

I will continue to pray for each of you and for your wellness. I ask that you keep me and my family in your prayers. May you experience a bountiful holiday season. May peace, joy and love continue to warm your hearts and your souls.

A Holiday Blessing

The Dallas Cowboys have their fans cheering again. That’s right America’s team appears to be back in the race to at least a chance to claim a conference championship. The Cowboys win against the Pittsburgh Steelers in overtime was huge. Love them or hate them the Dallas Cowboys have a winning record and the Cowboy fans are excited about! The Cowboys have gone through some major growing pains, but this years team has found a way to win by doing the basic football things- Run-Block-and Tackle.Football is about running, not passing.Throwing the ball is simply a measure to keep defenses from stacking the box and not allow a team to gain 10 yards in 3 down.Running the football is the safest and most effective way to move the football. And with DeMarco Murry in the line up the Cowboys have been doing just that.In Murry’s first two seasons out of the University of Oklahoma, The young running back has managed to set the franchise record for rushing in

a single game and he has also lived up to all expectations in his limited role in the offense. Murry can really do it all and in games in which he rushes for a touchdown, the Cowboys are undefeated in 2012. Since returning from an injury he suffered against Baltimore back in October, the Cowboy are in a position to win the NFC East if they can win the rest of their games. That’s the running part let!s talk about blocking.People can say what they want about QB Tony Romo , but he is one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL.Sometimes we forget the Romo was an undrafted free agent out of college and he didn’t start the pros until his fourth season. Romo continues to put up big numbers week after week in spite of poor blocking. But, perhaps the biggest improvement over the past six games has been in the offensive line.Romo’s offensive line has been highly

inconsistent in 2012 and there are several reasons why. But over the past few weeks, the pass protection has been a little better and a lot of that has to do with the the return of RB Murry. This is an offensive line that has been banged up, inconsistent and largely ineffective in a number of games this season. If the Cowboys can keep Romo off the ground, there is really no limit as to how far the Cowboys can go

in the post season. But this depends on the offensive line giving Romo and his playmakers a chance to succeed. But that’s only one side of the ball,in order for the Cowboys to keep pace and make a real run for the playoffs the defense has to continue to make plays and win the turn over battle.Prior to week 10 match up with the Eagle’s in Philadelphia, there was simply no sign of turnovers forced by the Dallas defense. Against the Eagles things began to change. New cornerback Brandon Carr picked off his first pass as a Cowboy and scored the

game- clinching touchdown off rookie QB Nick Foles. Heading into week 16, Carr has 3 interceptions which include another game- winner against the Pittsburg Steelers. The Cowboys in six of seven games have won the turnover battle, and during that stretch the boys have only lost the turnover battle once. In Washington the Cowboys turned the ball over 3 times to the Redskins and only lost by 7. In the other 5 games since November the Cowboys are undefeated with a turnover margin of plus-four in games against the Steelers, Cleveland and Cincinnati and two meetings with the Eagles. The Cowboys are on a roll and have put together enough wins to produce a winning record. It’s no coincidence that receiver Dez Bryant is emerging so quickly as a big-time playmaker in the NFL. Bryant is playing the best football of his young career and he has scored a touchdown in six consecutive games. If the Cowboys continue to do the basic football things, this season could be one to remember!!!!

Good Luck Cowboys !!May God Bless Us and Help Us Change this World!!!!!Mark A Toliver II

Dallas Cowboys (NFL) Games

Dallas Cowboys at Washington Redskins December 30, 2012New Orleans Saints at Dallas Cowboys December 23, 2012

The Dallas Cowboys defeated an old nemesis Sunday, The Pittsburgh Steelers. I cautiously predicted a Cowboy win, no secret information or anything I realized early on that Joe Green and Terry Bradshaw no longer play for the Steelers. This Steeler team looks more like the Bobbie Layne led Steelers than the Bradshaw led Steelers. Frequently we look at teams and fail to realize that those uniforms are the same but those are totally new guys wearing them, and the tradition that we thought that uniform stood for means nothing at all to the young men that wear them now. No one feels the nostalgia you feel but you.

The game itself took me back a few years, and listening to the Jason Garrett press conference took me back a longer way .Hearing Garrett took me back to the 60’s and a young Tom Landry. Landry would talk to the media, and like the guy that followed him as coach Jimmie Johnson, would talk through the media, not to the media.

Garrett reminded me of a young Landry, knew exactly where he wanted to go and had a legitimate plan to get there. I think some of the conversations you would hear about Landry are the same ones you hear about Garrett. Sounds like a robot, says the same thing over and over, and shows no feeling, dry personality can’t fire the team up see the similarities .Clint Murchison gave Tom Landry a 10 year contract to stabilize him and encourage him; it was rough in this town for young Mr. Landry. They acknowledge his brilliants coming here after being the defensive coordinator for the powerful New York Giants, and bringing the 4-3 defense into existence.

Landry and Garrett suffered similar fates; despite their brilliants they had teams that weren’t very talented. Landry started to see a little light at the end of the tunnel in his 4th year when the likes of Mel Renfro, future picks Bob Hayes, Roger Staubach showed up. They broke even Landry’s 6th year.

The Problem in 2012 is will Garrett get the reassuring contract to allow him to develop his plan. The boyz injury report looks like something you would see in a combat unite in a war zone. yet watching the game Sunday I saw some young men I didn’t even know existed playing inspired football, and that’s a tribute to the coaching staff.

I saw a young linebacker Alex Allbright, rt. Tackle Jermey Parnell, Defensive back Michael Coe, DT. Sean Lissemore. The offensive line looked like a professional line, they had center Ryan Cook making one of his few starts. Lost another inside player in the first half, newly acquired linebacker Ernie Sims to a concussion.

I see the Garretts plan coming together and I also see Coach Ryan’s defense although depleted fighting and representing. I think this team can still win against the Saints; the Skins on the final week of season could be a problem.

By Lorie Blair It is the end of the year and time

for all the Christmas luncheon and parties. I was fortunate enough to get the chance to have a Bite at the Tower Club in Dallas. The Tower Club is a private club that offers more than just a meal but full service membership. For the business professional there are services available. For the golf enthusiast there are services available and for those who travel there are clubs for you to avail yourself of.

As a member lunch services are generally readily available to you. If you are in need of a special luncheon or diner arrangement let them know and they are there to serve you. Either buffet or full course menu you won’t be disappointed.

We had the buffet for our luncheon; soup, salad and fruit with meat choices of beef, fish and chicken vegetables and of course desert. They pride themselves with Fuzion cooking. Fuzion is the new “Greenest cooking platform in America.” It provides restaurants the ability to produce delicious food without using frying oil or shortening in their cooking process. It’s 100% trans-fat free

and friendly to the environment too! Everything was perfectly prepared, presented and seasoned. I had both the beef and the tilapia as my meat choice. No need to add

salt or pepper. The rice was wonderful although the brussel spouts could have been cook a few minutes longer for me they too were wonderful. What I have experienced

with most of the 4 star restaurants I have frequented, the servers are there but only show up when needed. No hovering and no need to ask; they seem to intuitively know when they were needed and they were there with a smile. Tables are well maintained and kept even throughout your meal.

Ahhh, the life… I could really get use to this and eat here weekly. Yes, I checked and their last inspection was August 2012 with a score of 91. So for this Just a Bite score is two thumbs up and satisfied.

ROLLIN WITH A

BROTHA

Welcome to the weekend, baaby! Well here we sit, just a few days from Christmas 2012. Our worlds were recently rocked by the senseless killings in Newtown Connecticut. The difference this time was that unlike, Columbine, the Aurora Colorado movie theater shootings, Congresswoman Gabby Giffords being shot with weapons that should not be available, is that this time it was little 6 and 7 year old kids. As a matter of fact, 20 out of 27 murdered were little children. Hopefully their deaths will ignite a conversation about gun control that the National Rifle Association can’t beat into submission. It’s very telling that a large majority of Americans don’t believe in allowing assault rifles, mega bullet magazines and military equipment to be made available to the public, yet neither Mitt Romney, nor President Obama made it an important campaign topic. Voila, the power of the NRA! It sure will be good having our youngsters home for the next two weeks during Christmas Vacation... Ahhhh, Christmas vacation, 2 weeks of traditional family time, food, fun and fellowship. This is my 1st Christmas without my Mom and I must admit, it’s a bit mentally challenging. The Connecticut massacre, put a lot into perspective for me. It’s harder to be depressed, when you realize you had your Mom for 85 years, yet the parents in Newtown lost their loves at 6 or 7 years of age. According various surveys, there are 900 Million (non military)guns

in the world, 350 Million of those are in the U.S. That’s about 1 gun for every man, woman, and

child. Yes friends, it’s time for a conversation! If you are looking for some escapism this holiday season, read

on! Tonight(Fri), Kem and Rickey Smiley bring the “Love and Laughter Holiday Jam” to the Verizon in Grand Prairie... Then Sunday evening, Trey Songz, Miguel and Elle Varner flava the Verizon! Also Sunday, If you’ve still got some cash or credit after Christmas shopping, lol, Pitbull parties at the Winstar Casino in Oklahoma! At the movies, although this is not “breaking” news, lol: Tom

Cruise is on fire in his super shootem up, action flick, “Jack Reacher”...The little kids are gonna want to see “Monsters”, kids,lol!... The best new flick however may be Barbara Streisand and Seth Rogan in a Mother/Son getaway comedy, “Guilt

Trip”! I’m still playing catch up, but with 4 days off, “The Hobbit” and a few others are on my list! If you are still shopping, a new Walmart survey says...
