Obedience to God’s will Adult: When was it hardest for you to trust in God’s plan for you, as Mary did? What can help you at such times? Child: When is it hardest for you to obey a parent or teacher? What can help you obey with more trust?

Sisters and mothers

A very young girl meets a very old woman. Both are preg-nant. Both feel misunderstood. The young girl's fiancé, fear-ing scandal, is considering a quiet separation. The old woman's husband has been struck dumb and doesn't under-stand what's happening. And the women themselves - do they understand? Hardly. They are puzzled, confused, and some-what lost.

Mary, the young girl, needs to get out of the gossipy little town where she lives. She suffers from staring eyes and whis-pers behind her back. She escapes to the village over the hills to Ain Karim where her old cousin Elizabeth lives. She knows deep within her that Elizabeth will understand and offer her a safe place to weather the scandal.

As they meet and look at each other, they shout for joy. They embrace, they hold each other, they cry, they laugh. The fear and self-consciousness fall away from both of them. "The mother of my God," cries Elizabeth.

"My soul magnifies the Lord," cries Mary.

Elizabeth understands, affirms, and celebrates. Her whole body is jubilant; the child in her womb leaps for joy. And Mary realizes her grace, her gift, her special blessing. With a newfound freedom she exclaims, "The Lord has looked with favor on the lowliness of this servant. Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed, for the Mighty One has done great things for me."

Two women who felt oppressed and isolated suddenly realize their greatness and are free to celebrate their blessing. The two of them become community. They need each other, just to be together and protect each other, support each other, and affirm each other. They stay together for three months. Then each of them is ready to face her truth alone, without fear, willing to suffer the consequences of motherhood.

[From Sabbatical Journey by Henri Nouwen.]

In today's Gospel, Mary travels "in haste" to be with her cousin Elizabeth. Luke never says exactly why she goes, but we can guess: Mary wants to be with her beloved cousin in the last months of what must have been a very difficult preg-nancy; but she goes, too, to seek the elder Elizabeth's counsel and support during her own difficult time. In Mary and Eliza-beth's visit and in our own similar "visitations" the Spirit of God is present in the healing, comfort and support we can extend to one another in such moments.

Keep holiday parties safe for children Wine, cocktails and spiked eggnog may make your holidays festive, but they’re no party for young children. Children often accidentally drink alcohol

after holiday parties, by sampling partially empty glasses and what’s left in the punch bowl. Ingesting as little as 3 ounces of hard liquor potentially can be fatal to a child weighing 25 pounds. Alcohol causes blood sugar levels to drop, which can lead to confusion, seizures or even comas. Clear away all glasses and other alcoholic containers immediately as soon as guests leave after your holiday party. Keep the poison control center phone number programmed in your phone and posted on your refrigerator: 1-800-222-1222.

For particular help, you may call Assistance Ministry at (213) 637-7650.

Are You Prepared for 2013 Tax Law Changes?

If you have been putting off creating an estate plan or haven't updated it in years, upcoming changes in tax laws might spur you into action.

The current estate tax laws will expire at the end of 2012. Unless Congress intervenes before that time, you will see sig-nificant changes. Here is a preview of what you can expect:

Gift and Estate tax exemption drop dramatically: The gift and estate tax exemption decreases from $5.12 million to $1 mil-lion in 2013. This exemption is the amount you can pass to your beneficiaries without being taxed and it is expected to affect many estates. The Internal Revenue Service, for exam-ple, estimates that 114,600 estates of people dying in 2013 will have to pay taxes on the amount of their estates in excess of the $1M exemption. By comparison, in 2011, an estimated 8,600 estates of people who died paid estate taxes on the amount of their estate in excess of the larger $5M exemption. In addition, the gift and estate tax rate applied to amounts transferred in excess of the $1M exemption will increase from 35% to 55%. The annual gift tax exclusion—the amount you can give to anyone gift tax–free each year—is projected to be at $14,000 ($28,000 for married couples). Capital gains and income taxes increase: Capital gains taxes will increase from 15 to 20 percent and the top income tax rate will be raised from 35 percent in 2012 to 39.6 percent in 2013. Portability ends: For 2011 and 2012, if one spouse died with-out using up his or her federal estate tax exemption, the unused portion could be transferred to the surviving spouse. This is called a portability provision. In 2013, however, portability between spouses ends. Thus, if you haven't drawn up an estate plan yet, there may be no better time to do so. If a new tax bill is approved before Dec. 31, you will need to be ready for the last-minute changes. Either way, you may want to talk to your estate lawyer and tax advisor.

Aspirin: Yes or No Low-dose aspirin may do more harm than good in people without a history of a heart attack or stroke, according to an analysis of nine previously published clinical trials.

The study, which was reported in the Archives of Internal Medicine earlier this year, found that low-dose aspirin reduced nonfatal heart attacks by 20 percent. But that was outweighed by a 30 percent increase in serious gastrointestinal bleeding. For every 150 or so people who took aspirin for six years, the drug prevented one nonfatal heart attack, but caused two cases of serious bleeding. Moreover, aspirin did not reduce deaths from heart attacks and strokes.

People who have already had a heart attack or stroke clearly benefit from low-dose aspirin. That’s the only explicit heart-health claim the FDA allows for aspirin. But people without a history of cardiovascular disease should not routinely take aspirin, or should at least talk to their doctors about their risk factors before taking the drug, the researchers suggested. As-pirin may also reduce the risk of certain cancers (notably colo-rectal), so if you’re at high risk for cancer, this should enter into the equation.
