A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE" by Bud Ozar Mary was excited about Her pregnancy and rushed to tell Her cousin. Sadly, children are often seen as a liability, “another mouth to feed” or an “Obstacle to my career.” It is said “Christmas is for children.” It is more accurate to say “Christmas is for adults to appreciate the gift of children!”

Behold, a Virgin shall conceive and bear a son; and his name will be called Emmanuel.

(Isaiah 7:14) We are now already at the end of the Advent Season. Today’s Scripture Readings now focus on Mary and our long-awaited arrival of our new-born Savior, Jesus.

One of our hymns sung today, “The Angel Gabriel from Heav-en Came” recalls the familiar gospel passage of the Archangel Gabriel announcing to Mary that she will carry the Son of God. This gospel is also similar to the one used on the Feast of the Annunciation with the same announcement make to Mary.

It’s also most appropriate to use the “Ave Maria” text this Sun-day. The motet sung at 10 AM is written by Jacques Arcadelt. He was a Franco-Flemish composer of the Renaissance. His musical activity mainly took place in Italy and France.

Our Recessional Hymn makes mention of “A maiden’s off-spring” as we eagerly now await Christ’s coming in His true flesh.

Young Adult Ministry

Living out our Catholic faith can be challenging and can be especially difficult as a young adult trying to develop a career, raise a family, or simply grow closer to God. Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish is starting a Young Adult Ministry for people ages 18-39 to get to-gether, form a community, and rediscover the beauty of the Mass. We are looking to form a committee of young adults who would be interested and willing to invest time in this new ministry. If this is something that you feel passionate about, contact Gabe Chabot ([email protected]). The first meeting will be planned once responses come in and a group can be established.

SPECIAL CHRISTMAS BLOOD DRIVE

Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church Hall THIS Thursday, December 27th

Giving blood is a simple sacrifice; and one well worth making. Each donated pint of blood can save as many as three lives. It onlt takes about

one hour. Blood is used for numerous reasons, for people of all ages-premature babies...organ transplants...cancer patients...burn victims...heart patients...car accident victims...the list goes on. Jesus was asked by His disciples, “When did we ever see You hungry, and feed You ? Or thirsty and give You drink ? Or a stranger and help You ? Or naked and clothe You ?” To which Jesus replied” When you did it to these, the least of my brothers, you were doing it to me.” If you are 17 or older, weigh 110 lbs. or more, and are in general-ly good health, please call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767). Thank you

For more information call Deacon John 203-281-3563.

Christmas is one of the most important days of the Church year, second only to Easter itself. It is the feast of the incarnation, the feast of God becoming flesh (the Latin "in carne" means "enfleshment"). It is a uniquely Christian teaching, the Divine choosing to become one of us. Because of this belief, God is not only Transcendent, but also wholly Immanent, Emmanuel (God-with-us). While remaining Transcendent (meaning we must rise above our present condition to reach Him), He is at the same time Immanent (meaning He is with us as we rise toward Him). Every Eucharist is like Christmas where the bread and wine are trans-formed into His flesh, His Body and Blood, and, in a sense, He is born anew on the altar. The liturgical season of Christmas begins with the vigil Masses on Christmas Eve and concludes on the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. During this season, we celebrate the birth of Christ into our world and into our hearts, and reflect on the gift of salvation that is born with him…including the fact that he was born to die for us. The Christmas tree and the Nativity scene are popular symbols of the season and a tradition in many Christian homes. It is also tra-ditional to exchange Christmas gifts with family and friends as a way to honor God the Father's gift of his only son to the world. Having received the gift of Christ, we naturally want to pass that gift along to our loved ones.

3 Bus Trips to Goodspeed Opera House

The Music Man -- Wednesday, May 15, 2019 Winn Dixie -- Thursday, August 22, 2019

Billy Elliot -- Wednesday, November 20, 2019

These three established musicals have been announced by Good-speed Opera House for the 2019 season. The season will open with “The Music Man,” April 12 through June 16. Meredith Willson’s classic distillation (and satirization) of midwestern values in the early 20th century never goes out of style. The Beatles covered “Til There Was You” on their first album, and a few years ago on the Tony Awards, “The Music Man” opening number was rapped by T.I., LL Cool J and Hugh Jackman. Bus Trip will Be Wednesday, May 15, 2019.

“Because of Winn Dixie,” the musical based on the best-selling children’s book by Kate DiCamillo, has had regional theater try-outs within the last few years but has not yet made it to Broad-way. The show, which stars a dog, has been a pet project (so to speak) of Connecticut-based animal trainer Bill Berloni, the man who has coached countless mutts to portray Sandy in “Annie.” The book for “Because of Winn Dixie” is by Nell Benjamin, who adapted the movies “Legally Blonde” and “Mean Girls” into mu-sicals, and who revised “The Pirates of Penzance” for the Good-speed in 2000. Its score is by Duncan Shiek (the musicals “Spring Awakening” and “American Psycho”). “Because of Winn Dixie” runs June 28 through Sept. 1. Bus Trip will be Thursday, August 22, 2019. The final show of the Goodspeed season will be “Billy Elliott The Musical,” the international hit based on the 2000 film about a young British boy who wants to dance ballet. The show premiered in London in 2005 and ran for over three years on Broadway. It features a book and lyrics by the original film’s screenwriter, Lee Hall, and songs by Elton John. Bus Trip will be Wednesday, November 20, 2019.

Upcoming Adult Faith Formation Programs Are you looking for fresh and inspiring ways to grow in your Catholic faith? Is one of your New Year's resolutions to become more intentional in your spiritual growth? Perhaps, you would like to be able to more effectively integrate your faith with your life but aren't sure where to start.

Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church invites you to join your fellow parishioners who, like you, have a desire to rekindle their faith formation and find ways that will help them grow deeper in relationship with the Lord. Plans are underway for some innovative programs that will begin to be offered in mid-January 2019. A preview of a couple of the programs include:

Catholic Poetry

It has been said been stated that, "Catholic poetry is the human soul in action, moved by God's grace." Poetry is one example of an art form that can be used to express what is felt in our hearts. If you are someone who enjoys creative writing and, in particular, poetry, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel will be offering a writing workshop series. This se-ries will help to answer the questions of what is poetry? Why is poetry considered a powerful means of expression? How has poetry impacted our Catholic faith? and How can I learn to write poetry? This program will be suited to the be-ginner writer as well as to someone who has been writing for years. The goal will be to conclude the series by cele-brating National Poetry Month in April with a parish-wide poetry slam.

Holy Happy Hour

This program will offer a fun and creative way to become more familiar with some of our Catholic saints. We are all called to holiness and the saints provide us with valuable insight, wisdom and teachings that can be applied to each of our lives today. Their example helps us to grow in our own interior lives. We will be using the popular book, Drink-ing with the Saints by Michael P. Foley, as a road map to help us along the path of getting to know our saints more personally. Mr. Foley states that the goal of this book is to encourage Catholic friendships while celebrating some of the individual saint feast days in our liturgical calendar. In this book, he has cleverly matched each saint to a themed adult beverage. We will be sipping and savoring through the year while digging deeper into the stories of the saints. ******************************************************************* Details will follow for these two programs as well as for ad-ditional offerings that are being planned as soon as they are finalized. Please stay posted to the weekly bulletin as well as our social media outlets for more information. We look forward to growing in faith together in 2019.
