WEEKLY NOTE Reflections on the Family

A s we celebrate the feast of the Holy Family—Jesus, Mary, and Joseph—let’s reflect on what we can do to support all families. Pope Francis’

Apostolic Exhortation on the Joy of the Gospel, Evangelii Gaudium, gives us some provocative thoughts as a starting point:

others despite our differences and to belong to one another; it is also the place where parents pass on the faith to their children” (Evangelii Gaudium, 66).

The Christmas season is a wonderful time to strengthen our family bonds through little faith-filled traditions that each family develops: celebrating sacred

feasts together, attending Mass as a family, exchanging gifts full of meaning, singing Christmas hymns and fun songs, praying and playing together, etc. These are all things that families tend to do more of during this season, building up their bonds of love, despite little differences and discord that arises from living together in close proximity with others. Forgiving others and accepting forgiveness from them also build up

these family bonds, because we experience a love that transcends performance and behavior: you and I are loved by family despite doing and saying things that may hurt them at times. Loyalty is affirmed and faith passed on by forgiveness and love.

Yet the Pope warns of the negative influences of materialistic individualism:

“The family is experiencing a profound cultural crisis, as are all communities and social bonds. In the case of the family, the weakening of these bonds is particularly serious… The individualism of our postmodern and globalized era favors a lifestyle which weakens the development and stability of personal relationships and distorts family bonds.” (Evangelii Gaudium, 66-67).

Pursuing our individual wants and desires by acquiring more things, or seeking our individual success and comforts, weakens and even destroys family bonds. Reflecting on the Holy Family, we see a stark contrast to the family in crisis. Joseph forgets about himself and his professional career to leave behind his job in Nazareth to begin anew in Bethlehem, and then in Egypt, and then to start over once again in Nazareth. He’s not thinking about his individual preference and well-being as a carpenter, but thinks of the needs of the Virgin Mary, of the Child Jesus, and of doing God the Father’s will. He experiences uncertainty while risking possible professional failure while doing all he can to meet the needs of his family: this bonds him ever more tightly to Jesus and Mary for whom he lives.

Mary also sacrifices all the material goods they had put together to have a comfortable and clean home to venture out with nothing but the bare minimum of clothing and food—all while 9 months pregnant. Certainly she did not want that the Child Jesus would be born in a dirty, musty cave used to shelter farm animals, yet she sacrificed her own comfort and preferences so as to fulfill God’s heavenly plan: the Messiah was to be born in Bethlehem.

Jesus, the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity, could have been born any way he chose—he was God. Although he didn’t want the two human persons he loved most to have to suffer, he needed to show the world that when he came into the world as man he only needed two things—everything else was superfluous: all he needed was a mother and father who loved him very much. All the comforts, conveniences, and luxuries were unnecessary, even though he was God. He just needed love.

Through the sacrificial self-giving of each person in the Holy Family their family bonds grew tighter than blood. May each family learn from them and take advantage of this Christmas Season to grow tighter through their bonds of love.

Wishing you and your family a Happy New Year!

chwilę, co możemy zrobić, by wspomagać wszyskie rodziny.

„Rodzina [... to] podstawowa komórka społeczeństwa, miejsce, gdzie człowiek uczy się współżycia w różnorodności i przynależności do innych i gdzie rodzice przekazują dzieciom wiarę” (Evangelii Gaudium, 66).

Przebaczanie innym i przyjmowanie przebaczenia

Dzięki przebaczeniu i miłości możemy dawać świadectwo swojej lojalności wobec rodziny i przekazywać wiarę innym.

Ojciec Święty ostrzega nas jednak przed negatywnym wpływem materializmu i indywidualizmu:

Maryja równiez poświęca wszystkie dobra materialne, wygodny i czysty dom, by wyruszyć w podróż jedynie z małym zapasem żywności i ubrań – a wszystko to będąc w dziewiątym miesiącu ciąży.
