The end of one liturgical year and the beginning of a new one is upon us. This is the me to reflect, in an intense way, on what is of las ng, permanent, and ul mate meaning. This is the point in the liturgical season when we are meant to make a cri cal and stark examina on of where we are going. Is the path that we are on leading toward life with the Lord in eternity or are we distracted only by ques ons of passing moments that are, when all is said and done, not the meaningful heart of life? We can be tossed about and vexed by seemingly endless setbacks, disappointments, and burdens. There is no way around them. Seeking the path of least resistance o en leaves us with a hollow feeling. Unwilling to engage in the struggles of life and the strive to do the difficult things so that God’s presence takes root in the world through our efforts, guided by the gi s of the Holy Spirit, means that we are not using the me that God gives us to its best end. It can also mean that the things that we have sought with so much me and energy, once captured, leave us ul mately feeling empty and devoid of purpose.

Amidst all of the very ordinary and necessary concerns of living in this world we should not lose sight of the truth that we are moving toward a transcendent value: life with God in paradise. Our first reading from the Book of Proverbs describes the “worthy wife” (Proverbs 31:10). The first reading is not really se ng forth a descrip on of the perfect wife as if we were watching a checklist being examined by a prospec ve groom on an episode of The Bachelor. The “wife” in this reading is an allegorical portrayal of Wisdom and her gi s are ones that we should all seek to possess because her head is not turned by what is superficial or by mere roman c no ons that tarnish with the passage of me. Wisdom teaches us what is truly important: “She reaches out her hands to the poor and extends her hands to the poor” (31:20). Wisdom always asks us to turn away from the danger of turning inward so that our lives become small and hearts become hardened.

Those who entrust their hearts to the crea ve Wisdom of God will never be disappointed and the one who entrusts their heart to her “has an unfailing prize” (31:11). In a line from the scriptures that always cuts straight to the heart reminds us that Wisdom is the ul mate prize and that “charm is decep ve and beauty flee ng” (31:30). God’s Wisdom is greater than the passing things that some mes confuse us and disappoint us when we find that what we think are our fondest hopes because of their a rac veness are really superficial and less than beau ful when viewed in the intensity of the light. The Catechism of the Catholic Church highlights that God’s Wisdom is of a much different sort than human wisdom: “Christ crucified is thus "the power of God and the wisdom of God (CCC, 272). To seek the Wisdom of God is to seek the power of His living Word, Jesus Christ.

In his First Le er to the Thessalonians, Saint Paul writes: “Concerning mes and seasons, brothers and sisters, you have no need for anything to be wri en to you. For you yourselves know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief at night” (1 Thessalonians 5:1). Paul picks up upon an image from the Old Testament’s prophe c tradi on by speaking of the “Day of the L ;” the point toward which all history is tending. The final culmina on of history and judgment is unknown, it can never be pinpointed but Paul uses the language of a sudden judgment that is not expected in order to emphasize that the follower of Jesus is always ready to render an accoun ng of a life’s work. God stands outside of me and yet is Lord of me and directs its passage. He directs us as well but he does not force us we must be open to his promp ng. For our part we are to use this moment in which we stand for God’s purposes and to always be cognizant that we “. . . all children of the light and children of the day” (1 Thessalonians 5:5). The children of the light have all that they need to see God’s hand at work and to be open to his guidance that leads to eternal life.

In the gospel reading for this week’s liturgy, we hear the parable of the talents. The parable is a complex one and we hear it at this me of year to remind us and to encourage us by reassuring that God’s kingdom advances, moves forward, despite adversity and setbacks. Therefore, as the master entrusts each of his servants with a different number of talents the servants are le to tend to their master’s gi s to the best of their abili es. We are told that “A er a long me the master of those servants came back and se led accounts with them” (Ma hew 25:19). It can be difficult to see that our lives are indeed tending toward a goal when we lose sight of our ul mate judgment. But one message of the parable: judgment will come. The message of the parable is that as believers we cannot be risk adverse. Being a follower of Jesus means inves ng in gi s to others that may not offer an immediate dividend; the return on the gi of mercy, and forgiveness, steadfast and tolerance of one another’s faults may look to be in the eyes of the world a loser. But seen through the prism of God’s kingdom those gi s mean everything. The message of the parable is that those who hoard their gi s for their own use without inves ng their God given gi s in the hard work of God’s kingdom are turning their back on God given opportuni es. The parable concludes with the weight of God’s judgment: “For to everyone who has, more will be given and he will grow rich; but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. And throw this useless servant into the darkness outside, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth” (Ma hew 25:29-30). The more that we use God’s gi s for the good of others, the more that we seek to grow in and to share the gi s of faith, hope, and

love the more those gi s will return to us as a blessing. The more s ngy that we are with mercy, love, forgiveness, self-sacrifice, and other-centered living the more closed in ourselves we will become and the more barren our lives will be in this world and dim will our prospects be for life in eternity.

This is the season to us reflect upon the gi of me and to remember that we are all moving toward God. What we do with our me in this world and the way that we use our gi s has import for our future in eternity. Our Holy Father, Pope Francis, recently spoke at daily Mass of the Chris an’s need to always live in hope of the Lord’s return in glory. The Holy Father noted:

It is important to ask ourselves: ‘How do I await Jesus?’ But above all: ‘Do I or do I not await’ Jesus? Many mes, in fact, even we Chris ans ‘behave like pagans’ and ‘live as if nothing could happen.’ We must be careful not to be like a ‘selfish pagan,’ who acts as though he himself ‘were a king’ and thinks: ‘I can manage on my own.’ Those who behave in this manner come to no good, end up nameless, with no one close, without ci zenship. Each one of us must instead ask ourselves: ‘Do I believe in this hope, that He will come? And: ‘Do I have an open heart to hear the sound, when He knocks at the door, when He opens the door?’

Jesus Christ gives us every gi that we need to live in fidelity to the will of the Father in the power of the Holy Spirit who dwells in our hearts. We pray for the grace to always live in hope with confidence in the Lord’s return to us in glory and in judgment. Having used the gi s he gives us well and knowing of his merciful love we have nothing to fear.

November is the month of the faithful departed. Each year the names of our deceased loved ones are placed in a Book of Remembrance and kept in church during the month of November so that they are remembered in prayer. If you would like to remember your departed loved ones during the month of November please use the envelopes found at the doors of the church in order to do so. The envelopes may be returned to the collec on basket or the parish offices. Please make sure to clearly inscribe the names of your departed loved ones on the envelopes so that they may be entered in our Book of Remembrance. We remember all of the faithful departed at Mass throughout the month of November.

Many Catholics never completed the process of their full ini a on into the Church by receiving the Sacrament of Confirma on. If you are an adult bap zed Catholic and have not been confirmed but would like to be, please contact me at the parish office or via e-mail and we can talk about the program that will begin in the fall that will lead to receiving the gi s of the Holy Spirit in Confirma on at Easter. If you are an adult Catholic who has never been confirmed please consider taking part in this opportunity.

V L M O

In seeking to honor departed loved ones, family and friends o en look for ways to honor the sacred memory of the departed through prayer. There is no be er way to remember our loved ones than by commending them to God’s mercy. One opportunity to remember departed loved ones is through the perpetual memorial candles that are in our shrine area at the entrance of the church. The Shrines of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Saint Anthony of Padua, Saint Jude Thaddeus, and Thérèse of Lisieux all have candles that burn in perpetual memory of the departed as well as candles burning for other inten ons as a sign of prayer.

Mrs. Beverly Cuccinelli can provide you with more informa on with this opportunity. Mrs. Cuccinelli can be contacted at the parish office. Thank you, as always, for your generosity. A number of parishioners have already taken advantage of this opportunity to designate these candles as perpetual memorials for departed loved ones. To say that the candles are “perpetual” is to say that they will remain designated as such as long as Our Lady of the Holy Angels remains here . . . and we pray that is a long, long, long me. With God’s help, it will be so!

Thank you for your a en on and generosity as we conducted the “In-Pew” step in the Bishop’s Annual Appeal. Your support of the Appeal does so much to assist the vital work of Catholic Chari es and is also a help to our parish in the form of a rebate that we receive as a result of our par cipa on in the Appeal.

I also thank all of you who have given to the Appeal in past years or who have responded to a recent mailing from Bishop Serratelli. Your support of the Appeal helps the lives of so many who depend upon our generosity.

Dona ons to the Appeal do not have to be large – every gi helps and is a sign of your commitment to these important ministries of the Church. No one can do everything but everyone can do something to help. Please make your contribu on to the Appeal in order to help those who are so much in need of our living expression of God’s kindness.

T B ’ A A :

• O C C - The largest percentage of Appeal funds support our diocesan Catholic Chari es with dona ons to these programs and services:

• S S With the help of the Bishop’s Annual Appeal last year, much was done to support Catholic schools in the inner-city area, including capital improvements such as roof replacement, HVAC upgrades, interior ligh ng and exterior doors. The Appeal also helped fund financial aid to assist families to afford Catholic school educa on, technology upgrades to enhance the academic programs offered in the schools and support of school ac vi es such as music, art and sports that give a well-rounded educa onal experience.

• S E D P ’ R R The Bishop’s Annual Appeal helps fund the educa on of our seminarians and Nazareth Village, our diocesan priests’ re rement residence in Chester. This is especially important since the number of seminarians has increased drama cally in recent years, along with the cost of their forma on. The Appeal helps both of these groups of men: those who are preparing for a life me of service to the Church and those who have faithfully served for decades.

• P R Half of the amount received over our parish goal will be returned to our parish for our own needs. Not only does the Appeal support many worthwhile ministries throughout the diocese, it will also help our own parish if we reach and exceed our goal.

96 cents of every dollar raised is applied to the Appeal needs as outlined above. The 4 cent balance for fundraising expenses is far below the guidelines recommended by the Be er Business Bureau Wise Giving Alliance.
