Catholic Faith Leadership Conference: Circling Our Angels of Hope by Jordan R.

Last month, some of the grade 6 students in Ms. Commisso, Ms. Lisco, and Ms. Pontes’ classes were able to attend a

Catholic leadership conference at Father John Redmond Catholic Secondary School. This year’s theme was titled Cir-

cling Our Angels of Hope. During our visit, we watched and participated in creating skits, danced, and ate pizza but we

also had the opportunity to listen to many motivational speakers tell their stories of struggle that exists in their lives. We

heard the story of Meagan which was very emotional and touching. Meagan was a little girl that was kind and helpful to

those around her. At the age of 5, doctors found a brain tumour and Meagan was diagnosed with cancer and after going

through a difficult journey filled with the many struggles and treatments associated with cancer. Meagan passed away 5

months later. Every year, people gather together in honour of Meagan and walk in tribute to her. The mission of Mea-

gan’s Walk is to share the message of hope and to increase public awareness about brain tumors and the devastating

effects they have on children and their families. Although it was somewhat sad to hear stories of struggle, they were also

stories filled with hope and it was a fun filled, inspiring, and educational day.

Hip Hop Dancing By Skye G., Katherine M., Marcus X. and Samuel V.

Our class learned about hip hop in the gym. We went three times. Our teacher‟s name was

Mitch. He was really nice. First we did dance warm-ups. Warm-ups are important because

they get your muscles ready for dancing. Then we played a game called pencil freeze dance.

First you had to pretend you were a Star Wars chicken or a dinosaur or a kangaroo or break

dancer. When the music stopped you had to lie on the floor as quiet as a pencil. Mitch taught

us good dance moves like “pick up the bucket” and “raise the roof”. We danced to the song

Diamonds by Rhianna. We got lots of exercise and everybody had a great time!

Horse Shoe Valley by Julia and Tessa

On Tuesday, March 5th, the intermediate division went to Barrie to enjoy a day of snow

tubing. After our one hour bus ride, which seemed like forever, we finally arrived at

Horse Shoe Valley and were immediately struck with awe when we saw the size of the

hills! We watched a quick video about how to snow tube safely and still have fun, got

our helmets, and went on our way! We were transported up the gigantic hills by a pul-

ley while we sat in our tubes and enjoyed the view and the climb. It is quite certain that

most people couldn‟t help but feel a bit nervous while standing at the top for the first

time. We got to go down the hills either alone or in pairs. It was a huge rush going down filled with bumps

and wind, but no screams because, even if you tried, gravity didn‟t allow any sound to escape us. There were

9 hills in total. Some were smaller than others for those not yet ready to ride the big hills. We had an amaz-

ing and exciting day and hope to do it again next year!

Junior Volleyball

Junior Ski Trip by Jennifer and Gianna from Mr. Sloan’s Grade 4/5 class

The junior ski trip to Glenn Eden was a fun experience, especially for the students who had never

skied before. There were 6 stations to teach you the skills you will need to know for the bigger

hills. If you passed all 6 stations you would get a red sticker, to go on the bigger hills. To get up to

the top of the bigger hills you would have to take the chair lift. My first time going down the big hills

was so much fun. Once we got off the chair lift we had to go down a small hill and started the test.

During the test(to get the orange sticker) you had to go down the hill turning from side to side and

meet the teacher at the bottom. It felt good to get the orange sticker. Even though I was very tired

I had a great time! For those students who remained on the smaller hills, they had a whole hour to ski once the les-

sons were done. We hope to do it again next year!

Catholic schools are Catholic communities. Catholic schools are faith commu-

nities. We – parents, students, teachers, administrative and support staff – walk

and grow together in the faith which we received at our Baptism. And it is the

„together‟ that we grow. And as we learn from nature, growth relies on sun

and water and nutrition. Otherwise, it may fade away and even die. Our

growth is primarily a relationship with God, who at our Baptism, called us by

name. But the response of each of us to that growth is both personal and com-

munal. We grow in our faith in the nurturing atmosphere of our Catholic community be that of our local

parish, our home, or our Catholic school community.

Our school community will celebrate Catholic Education Week 2013 in ways that are appropriate to our

students‟ age. We invite you to participate in one or other of these activities as your personal time and

work schedule may permit.

There are five sub-themes for each day of Catholic Education Week:

Monday – Faith that is Rooted Tuesday – Faith that is Nurtured Wednesday – Faith that is Discerned

Thursday – Faith that is Witnessed Friday – Faith that is Celebrated

Every year, the Ontario Catholic School Trustees‟ Association (OCSTA) provides our Catholic schools with

a resource kit to help schools prepare for Catholic Education Week. Using these resources as well as our

own developed activities we have prepared a series of activities which will highlight how our school is

„Growing Together in Faith‟. We hope to see many of you during our school celebrations.

TCDSB Adopts Mental Health Strategy

Toronto Catholic District School Board’s commitment to student

well-being and achievement is integral to the Board’s Multi-

Year Strategic Plan. The Mental Health Strategy is part of a

larger board vision to craft safe, healthy, engaging and inclusive

schools, and aims to support the overall TCDSB Board Learning

Improvement Plan. Student engagement is contingent to a large

degree upon student mental health and well-being.

"On behalf of the TCDSB Mental Health Steering Committee

we recognize that student mental health is inextricably tied to

student engagement and achievement,‖ says Patricia Marra-

Stapleton, TCDSB Mental Health Leader. ―TCDSB’s Mental

Health Strategy recognizes that mental health is critical to stu-

dent success, and will endeavour to address this fundamental

area in an effort to assist our students reach their fullest poten-

tial."

Since the Canadian Psychological Association first declared

February as Psychology Month in 2005, the Board has also fo-

cused on psychology and mental health at this time each year.

Appropriately, the approval of the strategy took place at the

February meeting of the Student Achievement and Well-Being,

Catholic Education and Human Resources Committee.

―We envision TCDSB as a school board where there is an under-

standing that the mental health of children and youth is integral

to student achievement and well-being,‖ says Director of Educa-

tion Bruce Rodrigues. ―Our goal is for all of our schools to be

mentally healthy schools which support success and well-being

for the entire community including students and staff.‖

―By making mental health a priority, we hope to raise awareness

among our leaders of the impact of mental health upon achieve-

ment, and to focus our resources on prevention programs and the

development of mental health literacy across the board,‖ says

Chair of the Board Ann Andrachuk.

The Strategy, as well as the school guidelines and the suicide

intervention guidelines are available on the Board’s website at

www.tcdsb.org.
