St. Ann’s Parish 2nd Sunday of Advent December 4, 2016

This Thursday, December 8th, is the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is the patronal feast of the United States, a fact about which many Catholics are unaware. I have also found that many people are not aware of exactly what it is that we are celebrating. Many people mistakenly believe that this is the feast of when Mary conceived Jesus. No, that is the Solemnity of the Annunciation, which we celebrate on March 25th, nine months before Christmas. The Immaculate Conception remembers when St. Ann conceived Mary in her womb. While Mary was conceived normally, so that no sin would even remotely come near Jesus, the Father privileged Mary to be conceived without the stain of Original Sin, the sin of Adam and Eve that all people inherit; thus, her conception was pure, or Immaculate. Pope Pius IX declared this belief as infallible in 1854. This is one of only two infallible definitions made by the Holy Father while exercising his extraordinary power of infallibility. (The other is the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, declared by Pope Pius XII in 1950.) I find it interesting that all the discussion people have and the ridicule they give us as Catholics about papal infallibility is over a power that has been used only twice in history! All the other infallible beliefs we have come from the Pope’s ordinary power, which is really Christ’s gift to the Church Universal. By that we understand that anything the Church clearly and consistently teaches over the centuries is infallible because of the promise of Jesus to Peter that “the jaws of death will not prevail against [the church]” (cf. Matt.16:13-20). But I digress. Because of the significance of the declaration of the Immaculate Conception, it is celebrated as a Holyday of Obligation, which means Catholics worship God at Mass on this day or at the vigil. And especially since Mary is the Patron Saint of the United States under this title, it is all the more urgent that we come and pray for our nation on our patron feast day. We have just come through a very contentious election, and the barbs are still flying. Our nation needs to heal and move on, so please make sure you come to Mass for this feast and pray for the United States of America.
