Epiphany Today Charlotte Snee is giving a behind-the-scenes look at the importance and value of the three gifts the Magi brought to the Christ Child.

This is what the branches and blossoms of a frankincense tree look like. A metal blade is used to nick the tree, allowing droplets of white, milky sap to bleed slowly onto the bark. After the resin starts to harden, it is scraped off and left to dry in the sun. The resulting pellets may then be used in its dried form or steamed to yield essential oils. Myrrh is also made from sap, and both substances are edible and often chewed like gum. They are extremely fragrant, particularly when burned, with frankincense giving off a sweet, citrusy scent and myrrh producing a piney, bitter odor. In Biblical times both were used for their antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, to treat everything from indigestion and chronic coughs to hemorrhoids and halitosis.

Fair Trade Sunday: Today!!! Fair Trade products make great Christmas gifts and stocking stuffers. You can purchase coffee, many varieties of chocolate including special holiday chocolate minis, baking chocolate & chips, and dried fruit. We also have coffee from Costa Rica. Visit the table in the Gathering room after both services to fight injustice and to support small farmers around the world.

Choral Anthem “All Praise to Thee”

Text Music by Gelobet seist du, Jesu Christ ELAINE HAGENBERG

German, st. 1370

Martin Luther, 1524, cento Translation unknown

All praise to Thee, eternal God,

Who, clothed in garb of flesh and blood,

Dost take a manger for Thy throne,

While worlds on worlds are Thine alone.

Alleluiah.

Thou comest in the darksome night

To make us children of the light,

To make us in the realms divine,

Like Thine own angels, round Thee shine.

Alleluiah.

A little Child, Thou art our Guest

That weary ones in Thee may rest;

Forlorn and lowly is Thy birth

That we may rise to heaven from earth.

Alleluiah.

Methodist Women Mission Moment

"It was an eye-opening experience!" I often hear these words from young Japanese women who participate in the seminar programs offered by Wesley Foundation. Hearing these words and seeing young women get empowered by the Spirit and knowledge of justice makes me feel so blessed to serve Christ in this place. For many of these women, Christian faith is still a foreign religion. Yet through the programs and seminars of Wesley Foundation, many feel being welcomed by God's love and some of them welcome Christ in their lives. Hikari Chang, United Methodist Women regional missionary, Wesley Foundation, Tokyo, Japan Jeanne Roe Smith, deaconess, chaplain and executive director, Wesley Foundation Serving UCLA. Los Angeles, Calif.
