Parish Mass Intentions

God’s Word Today Advent is such a wonderful liturgical season. We are treated to a feast of scripture readings that can serve to inspire us as we wait in joyful hope for the coming of the Lord. In today’s first reading, Isaiah announces that God’s glory will be revealed and that we are to have no fear as we anticipate the tremendous burst of glory that the Lord’s coming will ignite. Saint Peter, in today’s second reading, reminds us to conduct our-selves in holiness and devotion as we ready ourselves to welcome the Lord at the end of time. The central figure for this second Advent Sunday is John the Bap-tist, who points not to himself but to the one who is to

come, who will baptize with the Holy Spirit. As God’s word of preparation is proclaimed today, let us ready ourselves to receive the Lord in each and every mo-ment of our lives. Let us learn to expect miracles among God’s holy people. From Saint Margaret Sunday Missal, copyright © J. S. Paluch Company

Pure Hearts Those whose hearts are pure are the temples of the Holy Spirit.

Exile Both Isaiah and Peter had the task of comforting and encouraging their communities during times of exile. The Israelites were in geographic exile from Israel; to them this was, in effect, the same as being in exile from their God. The early Christians, following the Resurrection, expected an immediate return of Christ in glo-ry; they, too, felt in “exile” as the delay of the Second Coming grew longer and longer. All four of scrip-ture’s authors today—Isaiah, the psalmist, Peter, and Mark—hasten to help us see things in God’s terms, not ours. They want us to know that we can never truly be exiled from God, or from God-among-us, since we know that when the faithful are gath-ered, Christ has come into their midst. Instead, we are encouraged today to do what we can from our end to shorten the time of our exile: to re-pent of our sins, to return our lives to the Lord, to live as people who seek the coming day of the Lord, when “kindness and truth shall meet; justice and peace shall kiss” (Psalm 85:10). The Story of Our Lady of Guadalupe A recent convert, Juan Diego heard a voice calling him on

Saturday December 9, 1531, as he walked past the Tepeyac hill. When he followed the voice up the hill he saw a beautiful young lady dressed as an Aztec princess, surrounded by light. The Lady asked him to go to the local Bish-op, Juan de Zumárraga, with instruc-tions that a shrine was to be built on the hill. As you can imagine, the Bishop was doubtful and ignored the request. Juan Diego returned to the Lady and plead-ed to her to send someone more im-portant. She told him to try again the next day. This time the Bishop asked for a sign to prove that it was indeed Mary who was making this request. Juan Diego told the Lady about the sign that the Bishop wanted. She told Juan Diego to come back the next day and she would give him the sign for the Bishop. By the time Juan Diego got home he found his uncle very sick. The next morning, instead of meeting the Lady, his intention was to get a priest for last rites and bypassed the hill. He was met on the road by the Lady. She promised to return his uncle to health if he would climb the hill to get some flowers. Juan Diego was surprised to find roses and placed them in his cloak to bring them to the Lady. After ar-ranging the flowers, she sent him back to the Bishop and told him to show no one what was in his cloak. At the Bish-op’s office, the cloak was opened and the roses fell out leaving behind a pic-ture of the Lady. Juan Diego returned home to find his uncle healthy. His uncle telling him that he had been visited by the Lady. She told him her name was, The Perfect Vir-gin, Saint Mary of Guadalupe. The bishop, in the meantime, began organ-izing a shrine to Mary, where Juan Die-go’s cloak would be stored. Juan Diego took care of the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe at the shrine until his death in 1548.

Treasures From Our Traditions Have you seen Antiques Roadshow on television? People bring attic treasures to experts for appraisal and possible cash. Catholic attics, or maybe Grandma’s wall, often hold a “sick call crucifix.” It is a curiously bulky crucifix hiding a sliding panel and a secret compartment. Two tiny candles, a squeeze bottle of holy water, a stringy purple mini‑stole, a tube of prayers, and some cotton

balls are all hidden inside. The cross folds up to form a mini‑altar that can be propped up by a sick per-son’s bed. All that is needed is a priest with the oil of the sick and Holy Communion. Forty years ago, when these crosses enjoyed great popularity, the sacrament of the sick was often an encounter between priest and sick person alone, and often only in a last crisis of illness. Gradually, we are reclaiming the sacrament of anointing from this minimal, hidden expression. It is cel-ebrated more richly and more often, even in the Sunday assembly, at every stage of illness and across a wide range of human suffering. The “sick call crucifix” is not a tradition, it is a curiosity from another time, but it reminds us of true tradition: we are a people who care for our sick, who accompany them in faith, and who sustain them with an expe-rience of Christ’s presence. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. Mass Intentions Please visit the church office, call, or email if you would like to offer a Mass for a loved one. D id You Know?

Santa Safety Here are some simple guidelines for parents, guardians, and grandpar-ents to employ to make sure that children have a safe and happy visit with Santa’s helper: When your child is with Santa’s helper, consider encouraging him or her to stand next to Santa or sit on the floor be-tween his feet rather than sitting on his lap. Let your child know that it’s okay to tell Santa what he or she wants for Christmas but that he or she should also tell mom and dad because they are also Santa’s help-ers… Secret surprises are special but no adult should ask a child to keep secrets from the child’s par-ents. Make sure that the Santa visit is out in the open—or make sure that parents, guardians, and grand-parents are included in the interac-tion.

Joy is Homemade

Happiness is something we make; It’s in our minds.

It’s not something to search for and seldom find,

It’s just waking up and beginning the day

By counting our blessings and kneel-ing to pray,

It’s never in wishing for things we have not,

But in giving thanks for all that we’ve got.

For it is completing what God’s grace gave us to do,

That we find real contentment and happiness, too.
