Dear SOHN Members,

This morning on the local news they were discussing the Cherry Blossoms and when they would peak. Time is flying by and I am already in the second year of my

term of office. This promises to be a very busy year. The Board met in late January to discuss several important issues for the Society. Under the direction of Erin Ross, the Leadership Task Force brought forward a proposal for online voting. If accepted, this will be used initially for elections but could conceivably be used for other issues requiring a vote from the membership. Look for further information in the June Update about the needed change to the bylaws.

At our last Congress I asked the membership to consider the question of opening membership to unlicensed nursing personnel. I want to present both sides of the issue in preparation for a decision at our 2017 Congress. Two of our more passionate members have written different viewpoints on the subject for your consideration. Helene Krouse has presented one viewpoint in a guest editorial in the most recent journal and Cristie Roush will be presenting the counterpoint in the next journal for you to be well informed. We will then vote for or against the issue at the 2017 Congress Business Meeting and put the question to rest.

Wendy Mackey and the Comprehensive ORL Head and Neck Nursing Course faculty have been working hard and I am pleased to let you know that seven educational modules should be available online very soon. They will be available individually or as a bundle with a price difference for members and non-members. I am hopeful this will become a valuable education offering and potentially a source of revenue for the Society.

A task force headed by Carolyn Waddington has revised the Smoking Cessation Protocol originally developed by Janice Adams. This very useful document will be available on the SOHN website.

The 31st Annual Pediatric ORL Nursing Spring Meeting (in conjunction with ASPO) will be held on May 18 at the JW Marriott Hotel in Austin, Texas. Nina DeSell has put together an exciting and informative educational program. The registration and hotel reservation information are now available on the SOHN website.

The Congress Education Planning Committee headed by Kristina Keppel and Mary Huntoon, with Michele Farrington assisting, are working with the new Director of Education, Sara Wheeler, to bring you a fabulous Congress in September. We are returning to Chicago, September 8-12. Join us for this opportunity to learn and play with old and new friends ~ Igniting Change: Inspire, Imagine and Innovate.

Sara Rich Wheeler Appointed New SOHN Education Director

Hello! My name is Sara Rich Wheeler, RN, PhD, PMHCNS-BC, LMHC and I am the new Director of Education for the Society of Otorhinolaryngology and Head-Neck Nurses. I have over forty years of experience in nursing edu-cation, as a Nurse Educator, Dean of Nursing, and have been the Director of Education for several national programs: International Childbirth Association and Resolve Through Sharing. I look forward to continuing the legacy of SOHN in offering quality educational programs for nurses in the future. One of my first goals will be to do a needs assessment of SOHN membership to determine educational topics, programs, and types of delivery members are interested in receiving ANCC contact hours. As a part of the needs assess-ment, members will be asked their interest in presenting at meetings, desire to participate on educational planning meetings, and/or becoming a lead nurse planner for local, regional, or national programs. SOHN is scheduled for reaccreditation in 2018 and we will be offering opportunities for learning how to assess local needs; plans for meeting educational gaps in knowl-edge, skill or practice; and, mentoring new members who want to be more involved in educational programming. I am planning a meeting for lead nurse planners and those who are interested in getting involved in SOHN in planning and offering educational programs at the 41st Congress Meeting in Chicago, September 8-12, 2017.

I’m really excited about a session being offered at the SOHN Wisconsin Chapter’s 15th Annual Education Day. Two articles are required to be read prior to the conference. The articles should take about 30 minutes to read and comprehend. Attendees will then indicate they have read those articles in preparation for the session by initialing on their evaluation form next to the statement, “In preparation for this lecture, I completed the assigned reading.” They will receive 1.5 contact hours. Attendees who solely attend the lecture without completing the preparatory reading will be awarded 1.0 contact hours. Articles will be available for download from their website: www.wisconsinsohn.com. The articles were chosen by the presenting nurse practitioner as representative of her lecture and a way to increase attendees learning and to facilitate discussion.

I look forward to meeting and working with you in the future. Should you want to contact me, I can be reached at 765-366-6609 or [email protected].

In Memory of SOHN Member Sheila Whitt

Sheila Whitt (r) with Maryland/ Washington, DC Chapter members

Many of you remember our esteemed colleague, Sheila Whitt, who was an Otolaryngology Head and Neck Nurse at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institution for thirty years. She was also a long time member of the Society of Otorhinolaryngology and Head-Neck Nurses (MD/DC Chapter). She dedicated her life to taking care of patients. Shelia retired from Johns Hopkins Institution a few years ago but since then had been battling with Leukemia.

After a long and brave battle, Sheila, sadly, passed away surrounded by her loving family. She will be remembered by her patients and colleagues for her dedication and unwavering ethics in the care provided to those in need. Shelia always had a special place in her heart for the underserved and the suffering, She would not think twice about giving a few dollars to pay for a prescription or provide transportation fare to her patients, Our time together was long in years but short in time. I will forever miss my mentor and friend.
