Our learners did exceptionally well at the NEA / Eisteddfod. A special word of thanks must be given to the foundation phase staff who took all 150 students (Gr R – 3), to compete and who received a junior diploma. Thank you to the staff as well, who spent many afternoons either practising, supporting, transporting or supervising the learners. You are amazing. To all the other learners who competed in this year’s NEA / Eisteddfod – thank you for being ambassadors for Delta Park School. We also enjoyed a term participating in cross country, soccer, Hip Hop dancing, kickboxing, tennis, girls club, Art club, Music club, wellness club, needlecraft, chess – and so the list goes on. Heritage day was a huge success, the learners and staff really put in a lot of effort in celebration of this special day. We celebrated all our diverse cultures but also celebrated our uniformity and the willingness to learn from each other. RENOVATIONS: The primary school has moved back into the school building and it is now the high school’s turn to face the mobile classrooms on the soccer field. There are still a few minor glitches in the primary school blocks but we are certain that these will be sorted out during the holidays. It would seem as if we are looking at the renovations being completed by the end of 2017. Any concerns (although the new contractors are very supportive and understanding) please contact Mr Jacobs via email, as he is teaching and is not always available. PARENTS FETCHING LEARNERS LATE: We still have learners who are being collected as late as 19.00. This is extremely dangerous, as most staff have left by then and Danny (security guard) is left with the responsibility of looking after the learners. PLEASE RESPECT YOUR CHILD’S SAFETY. We have had a few requests from parents: give the learners money and put them on a taxi, staff to let the learner stay over at the staff member’s house or the staff members to transport the learner home in their personal vehicles. THIS IS NOT PERMITTED SO PLEASE DO NOT REQUEST THIS FROM ANY STAFF MEMBER. Two documents are currently in the process of being drafted namely the parent code of conduct and also the duty of care which states that there will be supervision for learners 30 minutes before school starts or 30 minutes before any formal school event and will end an hour (60 min) after a school event and after a school day. As mentioned we have Danny to assist but he cannot be everywhere and you, as primary care giver, still have the responsibility to fetch your child on time. Repeat offenders will be referred to Social Development, as it can be interpreted as negligence. AGM: Do you think the finances of the school are important? This year’s AGM will take place on 18 October @ 19.00 in the staffroom. FAMILY DAY: Come and join us on this day from 9.00 – 14.00 for lots of fun. There will be inflatables, games, tea garden, talent shows and lots more. There will be space for a ‘braai’ to end the day. Date: Saturday 15 October. Kind regards Dr JJ Britz

DELTA NEWS 2016

Term 3 - No 4 of 2016

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S OFFICE

Dear Parents/Guardians It is almost impossible to think that we are already nearing the end of 2016. There are approximately 3 weeks of formal school left

after the holidays before the learners will have to show their skills and knowledge they have acquired throughout the year. Our

thoughts and prayers are especially with the Gr 12 learners who will start their final exams shortly after the holidays. Never

underestimate how important your support is to all our learners during exam times – irrespective of the grade.

As always we had a very busy Term 3.

Our learners did exceptionally well at the NEA / Eisteddfod. A special word of thanks must be given to the foundation phase staff

who took all 150 students (Gr R – 3), to compete and who received a junior diploma. Thank you to the staff as well, who spent many

afternoons either practising, supporting, transporting or supervising the learners. You are amazing.

To all the other learners who competed in this year’s NEA / Eisteddfod – thank you for being ambassadors for Delta Park School.

We also enjoyed a term participating in cross country, soccer, Hip Hop dancing, kickboxing, tennis, girls club, Art club, Music club,

wellness club, needlecraft, chess – and so the list goes on.

Heritage day was a huge success, the learners and staff really put in a lot of effort in celebration of this special day. We celebrated

all our diverse cultures but also celebrated our uniformity and the willingness to learn from each other.

RENOVATIONS: The primary school has moved back into the school building and it is now the high school’s turn to face the mobile

classrooms on the soccer field. There are still a few minor glitches in the primary school blocks but we are certain that these will be

sorted out during the holidays. It would seem as if we are looking at the renovations being completed by the end of 2017. Any

concerns (although the new contractors are very supportive and understanding) please contact Mr Jacobs via email, as he is

teaching and is not always available.

PARENTS FETCHING LEARNERS LATE: We still have learners who are being collected as late as 19.00. This is extremely

dangerous, as most staff have left by then and Danny (security guard) is left with the responsibility of looking after the learners.

PLEASE RESPECT YOUR CHILD’S SAFETY. We have had a few requests from parents: give the learners money and put them

on a taxi, staff to let the learner stay over at the staff member’s house or the staff members to transport the learner home in their

personal vehicles. THIS IS NOT PERMITTED SO PLEASE DO NOT REQUEST THIS FROM ANY STAFF MEMBER. Two

documents are currently in the process of being drafted namely the parent code of conduct and also the duty of care which states

that there will be supervision for learners 30 minutes before school starts or 30 minutes before any formal school event and will end

an hour (60 min) after a school event and after a school day. As mentioned we have Danny to assist but he cannot be everywhere

and you, as primary care giver, still have the responsibility to fetch your child on time. Repeat offenders will be referred to Social

Development, as it can be interpreted as negligence.

AGM: Do you think the finances of the school are important? This year’s AGM will take place on 18 October @ 19.00 in the staffroom.

FAMILY DAY: Come and join us on this day from 9.00 – 14.00 for lots of fun. There will be inflatables, games, tea garden, talent

shows and lots more. There will be space for a ‘braai’ to end the day. Date: Saturday 15 October.

BUDDY READING DAY

On Friday 16 September the Remedial Department hosted their annual Buddy Reading Day and the Reading Hat competition. Each child was

required to make a hat that represented a book which they had read. Everyone went to a lot of effort and we saw a few beautiful and very creative

hats! The winners were: Nicolai (Grade R); Asanda Mtshali (Grade 1); Tahto Magana (Grade 2); Tyriq Nannan (Grade 3); Jamie Franke (Grade

4); Gift Ngongoma (Grade 5); Michael Entoch (Grade 6) and Lindo (Grade 7). They each received a book as a prize. The older children spent a

period reading to the younger children and the day was enjoyed by all.

FOUNDATION PHASE OUTINGS

The Grade R to 3 Art Club learners went to Johannesburg Art Gallery for an outing. They were given a tour around the gallery and

learnt about several of the artists and their work. It was an exciting experience for everyone.

As part of our themes on insects and pollution, the grade 3 learners went to Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens. We enjoyed a hot

and tiring walk up to the top of the waterfall where we stopped for a snack and a rest. We then went back down to the gardens to

look for different insects around the gardens.

Grade 3 Outing to Pioneer Museum To learn more about our theme of ‘how people lived long ago’, the grade 3 learners went to the Pioneer Museum. They got to see how the Pioneer people dressed, how they travelled and the type of games the children played. The best part was getting to eat some freshly baked bread from a fire oven.

BIC ROAD SHOW

Bic came to present a show to the primary school. Their fun road show focused on bullying and the legacy we want to leave to the

future generations. The learners enjoyed the road show and being able to experiencingdancing on stage to dance with the Bic

team.

EISTEDDFOD

The foundation phase learners took part in the Eisteddfod by performing a choral verse poem. They all practised hard to learn their

words and actions and they all did so incredibly well. Thank you to all those parents who were able to come and watch the

performances. Your support means a lot to the staff and to your children!

PUPPET SHOW

The grade 2’s and 3’s watched a puppet show on diversity. They learnt about several different cultures in our country and around

the world. It was a wonderful, interactive show. It was a great way for the children to learn about the cultures of others and the need

to respect each other.

FROM THE HIGH SCHOOL

High School Cross Country

We had another very successful cross country season during the third term. Mr Basil Freitas joined the team and together with Mrs Prinsloo they diligently coached the learners. We had four cross country meets with the final meet being held at Roodepark School. Our learners improved at every meet. The learner who really showed great improvement was Morgan Mabuza in Grade 8. At the final meet he managed to place 10th. We look forward to seeing him in action next year.

HOSPITALITY OUTINGS

The Grade 11 learners enjoyed an outing to Lesedi Cultural Village on 9 September. A DVD presentation and introduction to the

Ndebele theatre was given and various cultural dancing and singing was held in the Giant Ngoma. Thereafter the learners were

taken through the village and introduced to the Zulu, Basotho, Xhosa, Pedi and Ndebele tribes. To end off the morning a delicious

traditional lunch of pap and boerewors was served. Some were even brave enough to try Mopani worms!!

On 5 September, the Grade 10 learners enjoyed an outing to Café Food at Cresta Shopping Mall. The learners were exposed to

the establishment’s industrial kitchen and beverages area. Thereafter they enjoyed a scrumptious breakfast where they were

exposed to different breakfast styles and breakfast menus. This formed part of the curriculum which was covered this term.
