What is it?Demography is the study of populationWhy do people settle in certain areas?What lead to changes in settlement patterns?What trends can we see and why is it important?

Growing PopulationThe worlds population is growingAn estimated 7 Billion people75% of all people live on less than 5% of Earths surfaceEast AsiaSouth AsiaSoutheast AsiaEuropeNorth AmericaPeople live in a variety of placesURBAN= city areasRURAL= country areasSUBURBAN= residential areas outside of cities

Over half the total populationLevel of Development of PopulationsMore developed countries have stable governments and economies (**Look at the countries in blue Why are those places developed?)Less developed countries have unstable governments and economies

Population GrowthBirth Rate or Fertility Rate: number of births per 1,000 people (Why would this be high?)Rate of natural increase: rate at which a population grows

Death RateDeath rate: number of deaths per 1,000 peopleInfant mortality rate: number of deaths of babies per 1,000 live births

Why would these be high? Why would these be low?Life expectancyLife expectancy= average biological years a citizen can expect to live.USA life expectancy is 77.9 years old.Factors influencing: healthcare, access to food and water, sanitation, and education.

Population distributionPopulation distribution the pattern of human settlement.Humans live on roughly 1/3 of the earths land Why so little?? Where do most people live?

Population DensityPopulation Density- the concentration of people in an area Which areas of the world are the most densely populated?

Literacy RateLiteracy Rate: number of people in a population that can read and write Why would some countries have low LR?
