DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL WORK MINUTES OF THE BOARD OF STUDIES 2017-18 The Board of Studies was conducted on 27 th March 2017 in the Department of Social Work. Sr.Niranjana Anthonisamy, Asst.Professor and Head welcomed the University nominee Dr.Raja Samual, Professor, Madras School of Social Work, Mr.Driviyaraj, Executive Director, YNEEW, Dindigul and Ms.Arockya Ramya, the Student Representative. The syllabus of the year 2017 18 has been passed with the following changes. The Board has taken the following decisions in the Board of Studies meeting. I Year Papers: the following revisions have been made in the I Year Papers, I.NON-MAJOR ELECTIVE-I- COUNSELLING AND GUIDANCE The UNIT-III- BASIC - APPROACHES TO COUNSELLING AND COMMUNICATION WITH COUNSELING was revised as, 3.1 Approaches 3.1.1 Psycho Analytical Approach 3.1.2 Humanistic Approach 3.1.3 Cognitive Behavior Approach 3.2 Communication 3.2.1. Communication skills in Counselling 3.3 Elements and Types of Communication 3.4 Communication barriers; helps to Overcoming Communication barriers 3.5 Effective Communication in relevance to counseling.     the following revisions were made,

    UNIT I - DISABILITY

    The Board modified the sub-unit 1.1 Classification and Characteristics of Disability as

    1.1 Definition, Classification and Characteristics of Disability and in the sub unit 1.2 Causes for

    Disability the Board included the Measurement of Disability.

    UNIT-II DISABILITY AND LAW

    The following changes were made by the board in the sub unit 2.2 2.1 Rights of Persons with disability instead of Rights of disabled and included 2.3 as

    2.1.3 National Policy on Persons With Disability 2006

    In FAMILY AND CHILD WELFARE(SPECIALIZATION PAPER III) SOCIAL WORK WITH

    YOUTH AND AGED the board made revisions as

    4.5.2 Instead of Family Problems the Board added Family problems and Changing Family Structure

    and its impact.

    In UNIT-V on GERIATRIC SERVICES

    Under the sub unit 5.4 Aging with Dignity is added with Successful Aging In MEDICAL AND PSYCHIATRIC SOCIAL WORK (SPECIALIZATION PAPER I ) - BASICS

    OF HEALTH CARE is revised as

    The sub unitUNIT - II: HYGIENE AND NUTRITION 2.1. Water and Sanitation Hygiene 2.2. Nutrient groups. 2.3. Social aspects of Nutrition 2.4.1. Malnutrition 2.4.2. Balanced diet 2.4. Assessment of Nutritional Status 2.5. Nationalprogramme in Nutrition was re-worked by the Board as

    by the Board instead of

    In 4.1.4 the word Documentation was added by the Board as Medical Social Work Research and

    Documentation.

    MAJOR ELECTIVE -3- FAMILY AND MARITAL COUNSELING, is revised as follows

    Under UNIT-I- BASIC CONCEPT OF COUNSELLING the Board added Definitions of

    counseling and made as 1.1 Concept of counseling and Definitions of counseling.

    UNIT:II COUNSELING METHODS AND TECHNIQUES is re-worked and arranged as

    The Board in UNIT 4: CONTEMPORARY ISSUES AND POTENTIALS THROUGH LOCAL

    SELF GOVERNMENT added the Use of Media in 4.4 along with the Skills and Approaches in

    Community Development – Lobby and Advocacy .

    The UNIT 5 on NETWORKING had been revised as

    5.2 Process and Scope of Networking

    5.3 Types of Network ( Formal and Informal) - VANI,TN-forces, CACL, CAT

    cases were added along withPanchyats and Environment.

    1.4 Factors Leading to Change and their Impacts on Urban, Rural

    andrevised as

    1.1 Characteristics of Urban, Rural and Tribal communities.

    1.2 Changing Patterns of Social Institutions – Family, marriage,

    1.3 Economic systems and changing patterns ( Occupational Patterns, Stratification, Resources

    access, control and Use.

    1.4 Factors Leading to Change and their Impacts on Urban, Rural and Tribal Communities (

    Urbanization, Migration, Industrialization, Depletion of Natural resources such as Land , Forest,

    Water resources) and New Economic Policy.

  • UNIT 2: ISSUES, IMPLICATIONS AND CHALLENGES – the Board revised and re-framed the

    sub-unit as

    2.1 Economic issues (Poverty, Unemployment, Inequality in Resource access)- concepts.

    2.2 Environmental issues ( Ecological Imbalance, Degeneration of resources, Pollution, Waste

    desposal and Sanitation)

    2.3 Socio-Cultural issues ( Inequality- class, caste and gender, Cultural invasion, Global

    culture impact on local community, Caste Polarisation , Communalism and Regionalism.

    2.4 Infrastructure and amenitie( Water, Energy, Housing, Road, Transport and

    Communication, Health and Education) - Issues.

    2.5 Displacement(Development projects, Disaster) – Issues

    UNIT 3 RURAL AND TRIBAL COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT – the Board revised the unit as,

    3.1 Concepts of Rural and Tribal Community –( Meaning and Origin in India )

    3.2 Rural and Tribal Community Development –

    3.2.1 Definition &concepts,

    3.2.2 Philosophy

    3.2.3 Objectives and Scope

    3.3 Difference between Rural Development and rural community development.

    3.4 Rural and Tribal Development schemes Swarnjayanti Gram SwarozgarYojana (SGSY), Indira

    AwasYojna (IAY), Bharat Nirman, Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarnetee Act

    (MGNREGA), Tamilnadu Village Habitations Improvement Scheme THAI. SwacharBharath. – PTG

    (Primitive Tribal Groups), Tribal Research Institute , Vocational Training Center, TRIFED, Grant

    in Aid Programme for welfare of ST to Voluntary Organisation.

    The Board revised the sub- unit title in UNIT 4 URBAN COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

    Instead of 4.4URBAN COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT the sub title was introduced as

    Disadvantaged Neighbourhood:

    In 4.4.7 Urban Development Schemes the Board included the specific schemes as

    PradhanMantriAwasYojna , National Urban Livelihood Mission, Credit Risk Guarantee Fund.

    The Board made a detailed study n the Certificate Course titled YOUTH IN CYBER WORLD and

    accepted the same with three credits.

    The Board also accepted a New Course self study paper titled DISASTER MANAGEMENT FOR

    SOCIALWORKERS. After discussion and deliberations the Board accepted the paper from this year.

    With the view of employment the Block Placement of the II MSW students will be held in the month of

    May after their IV semester exams. The Board accepted the same.

  • Based on the suggestions given by various stakeholders,courses which focused on skill

    development,employability and entrepreneurship were introduced to make the students ready to be

    effective employees or dynamic/smart employers.The details of these courses are given below
