PG AND RESEARCH DEPARTMENT OF BOTANY MINUTES OF THE BOARD OF STUDIES 2018-19 The meeting of the Board of studies in Botany was held on 07.04.2018 at 10 a.m. in the Department of Botany. The meeting commenced with the prayer followed by the welcome address delivered by Dr. P. Francisca, Head of the department. The experts present were: 1. Dr. P.Anantharaman- University Representative 2. Dr. J.John- Expert 3. Dr.Sami Veerappa- Expert Agenda 1. The revision of the courses for all II and III UG 2. The revision of the courses for all I and II PG 3. The revision of the courses for M.Phil. 4. All the revisions will be carried out in the next revision. Purpose of Revision 1. UG, PG and M.Phil syllabi were revised in order to update the contents according to the newly developing areas in botany. 2. The courses were revised and updated to focus more on developing the employability skills of the students.

    The meeting of the Board of studies in Botany was held on 07.04.2018 at 10 a.m. in the

    Department of Botany.

    The meeting commenced with the prayer followed by the welcome address delivered by Dr.

    P. Francisca, Head of the department.

    The experts present were:

    Agenda

    1. The revision of the courses for all II and III UG

    2. The revision of the courses for all I and II PG

    3. The revision of the courses for M.Phil.

    4. All the revisions will be carried out in the next revision.

    Purpose of Revision

    1. UG, PG and M.Phil syllabi were revised in order to update the contents according

    to the newly developing areas in botany.

    2. The courses were revised and updated to focus more on developing the

    employability skills of the students.

  • 3. The courses were revised and updated to focus to help the students for

    preparing the competitive exams.

    Suggestions and Revision:

    The Board discussed and revised the courses for all UG, PG and M.Phil and

    suggestions made by the Board members will be carried out. The following were the

    suggestions:

    The following papers from I B.Sc Botany were accepted by the experts fully without

    further suggestions:

    Major Core 1- Plant diversity – I

    Major Core 2- Plant diversity –II

    Major core 3- Practical-1 Plant diversity –I&II

    II B.Sc. Botany (Semester III)

    In Allied compulsory 4 – Paper I- Plant diversity, Taxonomy, Anatomy, Embryology, Ecology and

    Physiology, the structure of dicot embryo should be included in Unit- III.

    The following papers from II B.Sc Botany were accepted by the experts fully without

    further suggestions:

    Major core 4 – Cell biology, Biostatistics and Bioinformatics

    Major Elective 1 – Microbiology and Plant Pathology

    Major Core 5 - Anatomy, Embryology and Seed Technology

    SBE- 3 Botanical skills for Chemical sciences (theory cum lab) for Chemistry students

    III B.Sc. Botany (Semester V & VI)

    In MC 8 Morphology, Taxonomy of angiosperms and Ethnobotany –As per the students

    suggestion, the number of families reduced and which should be included in extra

    readings.

    In MC 9- Pharmacognosy paper, the medicinal uses of marine plants to be introduced

    in Unit- IV.

    In ME2- Plant foods- the title should be revised as Food and Nutrition. In which, Fast

    Foods- problems and diseasesshould be included.

    In NME1- Food Science and Technology-traditional methods of Cooking was included

    in Unit II.

    In NME2- Herbal Remedies, Indian system of medicine should have only Siddha and

    Ayurveda in Unit-I.

    In all the UG papers, the latest references to be included.

    Unit II.

    In MC3-Plant anatomy, Developmental biology and Morphogenesis,to include

    electron microscopic structure of xylem in Unit I.

    In MC 8- Environmental biotechnology, Conservation of resources and Remote sensing, in

    Unit III- to include the role of state pollution and central pollution control board and

    in Unit IV- NBA(National Biodiversity Authority) and to form the Remote sensing to

    be a separate Unit.

    In NME1- Plants and Human Welfare- in Unit IV- seaweed liquid fertilizer in organic

    farming to be included.

  • Based on the suggestions given by various stakeholders, courses which focussed on skill

    development, employability and entrepreneurship were introduced to make the students ready to
