9484 2144 http://cths.nsw.edu.au [email protected] Term 2 Week 3A 12 May 2017 DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S REPORT NAPLAN Exams This week all Year 7 and 9 students completed their NAPLAN (National Assessment Program, Literacy and Numeracy) exams in Reading, Writing, Numeracy, Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation. This test is a diagnostic tool, which gives teachers and parents a snapshot of what their child can and cannot do on the day of the test. As a school, we will analyse the results, looking at strengths and weaknesses in particular groups, as well as individual students. This information will be used to put strategies in place for matters, which may require attention in the future. Mr Jones, along with a selection of Year 9 students, were interviewed by the media regarding the link between NAPLAN testing and minimum literacy and numeracy standards. If you missed these interviews the links below will allow you to see how articulate and well informed our students are and how well our school is perceived in the wider community. All Year 7, 10 and 12 students have undertaken sleep sessions, which have provided a range of information, encouraging strategies for improving sleep patterns. Due to the many inquiries from parents regarding the difficulties in helping their children to ‘switch off’ at the end of the day, we will also be holding a sleep session for parents to attend. This session has been organised for Tuesday 13 June at 7pm, directly following the conclusion of the Year 7 Parent/Teacher Night. Parents from all years are welcome to attend, as well as anyone connected through the local community. We have asked internationally recognised sleep expert, Dr Carmel Harrington, to deliver this session at the school. Dr Harrington has delivered many sessions with various year groups and says she is amazed at the seemingly little importance given to sleep. Research shows, sleep is critical to our physical and mental health and is fundamental to our ability to think and learn. Emerging research clearly shows sleeping well is a key component to optimal performance and health and if we want to be at the top of our game, we must ensure we obtain the best sleep possible. Uniform Matters It has come to our attention, Lowes is currently out of stock of the junior boys’ grey school tie. I have contacted Lowes Castle Hill, who assure me they will endeavour to have these ties back in stock within the next two weeks. As an alternative, our other supplier, School Uniforms Australia, has stock of the grey ties, which can be purchased from their website via the following link: www.schooluniformsaustralia.com.au Canterbury have also had some supply problems with size M and L Jackets. However, we hope this issue will be resolved in the near future. Other sizes are still available for purchase from their website: https://cherrybrook.portalogue.com I would also like to remind everyone our school socks are part of the school uniform. While most students are happy to comply with this, some insist on wearing black socks as an alternative. Black socks are not acceptable and not part of the school uniform! Students are also out of uniform if they wear a hoodie! There are plenty of alternatives to keep warm with school jumpers, zip jackets and Canterbury Jackets available. Students unable to wear full school uniform MUST provide a signed note from their parent/carer, explaining the reason. Cherrybrook Technology High School

Building Project Update There has been a lot of activity on the building site this week. The piling rig is in the final stages of drilling 85 pier holes in preparation for the ground floor slab. Prior to the ground floor slab being poured, we will see surveyors on site to map out the area for the installation of the passenger lift. We have also seen the commencement of the electrical trenching works from the bui lding site, down past the basketball courts and through to D block. LMBR and School Finances As mentioned in a previous Network, a new Learning Management and Business Reform (LMBR) program is being introduced to all public schools throughout NSW, by the Department of Education. Our ‘Go Live’ date for this to occur is Monday 22 May 2017. As this day rapidly approaches, parents are reminded our Finance Department will be closed from Monday 15 May until Monday 22 May. Therefore, no payments or receipts can be processed during this time.

New Staff CTHS would like to welcome new additions to our teaching staff and SASS team. In HSIE, Katherine McLean has joined us from Pittwater High School, Belinda Eathorne has joined the PDHPE Department from Moorebank High School and Kanchan Saxena has been appointed in our Mathematics KLA. In the SASS team, Terry Craig has joined as a General Assistant and Joanne Ede has been appointed as a First Aid Officer, as well as completing administrative tasks related to health care. I hope they feel most welcome at the school.

Measles Alert

Areas of NSW have recently experienced an outbreak of measles. Measles is a highly contagious viral disease, which can have serious complications. NSW Health issued an infectious disease alert, notifying the public of the outbreak and recent locations visited by those affected by the virus. NSW Health is urging people to take advantage of the free measles vaccine, available at GPs and to look out for measles symptoms. Symptoms include:

Fever

Sore eyes

Cough

Following fever, sore eyes and cough - a red, blotchy rash, typically spreading from the neck to the rest of the body, following three to four days later.

Measles is mostly spread by coughing and sneezing. Students and staff who have been in close proximity to individuals with measles should be monitored and consult a doctor if they are showing signs of any of the above mentioned symptoms.

Dangerous Student Behaviour in the Pyes Creek Area A very concerned member of the general public contacted the school on Thursday regarding two unidentified male students, wearing CTHS uniform (believed to be juniors), who were throwing rocks towards New Line Road at approximately 4.50pm. One of the rocks hit his windscreen, which caused it to crack. Fortunately, this did not cause him to lose control of his car. It is unlikely we will be able to determine who these students were. However, if anyone has any information regarding this issue we would be very grateful. Students will be addressed regarding the criminal nature of this action. Mrs Bevan

F1 in Schools On Friday last week the students from CTHS’s F1 in Schools competitive teams went on an excursion to the Gulf Western Nitro Thunder Top Fuel Dragster competition, held at Sydney Dragway in Eastern Creek. The six students spent most of the day observing races of a range of different purpose built drag racing cars, including street legal performance cars, one cylinder Junior Dragsters, racing motorbikes and Top Fuel Dragsters. The goal was to analyse the vehicles racing down a 400m straight track in an effort to learn about acceleration and aerodynamics in a drag racing context. The Top Fuel Drag racing is the highest level of competitive drag racing, which the F1 in Schools program emulates. The students engage in design and construction of model drag racing cars, which race down a 25m track. Just like the Top Fuel Dragster teams, the F1 in Schools teams build pit stops, document their design process and present to senior engineers and industry professionals. We were given access to Pit Lane, where the students got up close with the Top Fuel Dragsters, and were able to spend time talking to the engineers and drivers of the professional teams. We spent a large amount of time talking to the team from Rapisarda Autosport International, whose car runs the 400m track in about 4.5 seconds, burning 80L of race fuel, and accelerating from 0-200km/h in under 1 second! Nope, that’s not a typo! The team learned a lot about the competitive scene, and the structure of the tournament, which is very similar to the F1 in Schools Regionals coming up in August, and have taken away some design strategies which they will use in the creation of their cars.
