July 2013

From the Driver’s SeatBy Michael Soriano

As Lisa and I returnfrom PARADE, I amso pleased to havebeen able to share thePARADE experiencewith so manyMaumee Valleymembers. As I statedlast month, therewere close to 50

MVR members registered for Parade inTraverse City. In addition, a fewmembers just came up for a day or twoto explore the Concours and to get afeel for what PARADE is all about.

With nearly 1800 Porschephilescongregated in one location, Porsche,AG, often does something special forPCA members. This year they surprisedeveryone by flying over two not yetreleased cars. At the Welcome Party, they unveiled the 50th Anniversary 911,and at the Concours Banquet, theyactually drove the new GT3 into theballroom!!

On Monday afternoon, Lisa and Iexplored the Concours, and among thehistorical display, was the first 911 everproduced, now owned by PorscheEnthusiast Jerry Seinfeld. While at theConcours, we ran into Roger Hollidaywho was working on an article for thePorsche Post, and he had one goal forthe trip, which I was able to help himachieve. Roger, having worked at thePorsche Factory from 1961-1964, reallywanted to meet Hans Peter Porsche.Through our friend, Paul Gregor, whoworks for Porsche, AG and PCNA, the

meeting was made possible. It was afantastic sight to watch Roger and HansPeter share memories and stories;afterward, we all posed for a fewpictures.

It was also great to see a large numberof our members get to participate in oneof my favorite events at Parade,Michelin’s Drive and Compare. However, this year the event was sopopular, it was simply Michelin Drive. Each participant had the opportunity todrive a new 991 cab through a smallautocross course accompanied by aPorsche Driving Experience Instructor.Knowing that once wouldn’t be enoughfor either of us, Lisa and I registered forboth days and went back on Tuesday forour second appointment. As the shuttlebus entered the casino parking lot, alocal sheriff was parked at the edge ofthe course. A few minutes later, he wasstanding out of his car just watching;after about 35 minutes, one of theMichelin employees walked over to himto see if there was a problem. Therewasn’t; the sheriff was just hoping hecould get a chance to give the course atry in the 991 cab, of course.

Tuesday evening, we attended theConcours Banquet with the Ambruses, the Gargaszs, and the Jennens.Congratulations to Gary and Pat whowon an award for their Concours entry.A number of our members gave a greatdeal of their time to volunteering, Bethand Barney Stewart led a couple of

Driving Tours to the LeelanauPeninsula, and we heard it was awonderful tour. We led a winery bustour and a driving tour to MackinacIsland. Others assisted with the drivingtours, worked in Hospitality, at theAutocross, and in the Goodie Store. It isone of the best ways to meet peoplefrom other regions and make friendsthat will last for years.

Saturday was the Parade of Porscheswhich included nearly 300 cars andcovered 17 miles, but before that wasthe 5K walk and run, and the Volunteerlunch, where everyone that volunteersfor at least 2 sessions of 4 hours, gets abuffet lunch and an opportunity to winprizes ranging from parade logo wear toa set of tires. Saturday evening was theVictory Banquet. One of the things theydo each year is announce the winner(s)of the Spring/Summer Member OnlyRaffle; this year instead of showing avideo of Vu surprising the winner athome, they decided to announce it live. The presentation was done with a “Priceis Right” theme and Manny Alban,National PCA President, called up 4couples, having each one pick a key totry to start the new Cayman. One ofthose couples was our own Ron andSusan Parker. Two couples each won anew Cayman and $25,000. It turned outthat Ron and Susan along with oneother couple, were in on the surprise, but the rest of us were not, and the 3tables of Maumee Valley members wereall rooting for Ron’s key to start the car.We spoke to the Parkers later in theevening, and they said that PARADEhad been a wonderful experience; itappeared as though everyone had a trulyenjoyable time. And as is customary atevery Victory Banquet, the next 2

PARADE locations and the next 3ESCAPE locations were announced.Next year, PARADE will be inMonterey, CA and nearby again thefollowing year in French Lick, IN. Thenext 3 ESCAPES will be held in LosAngeles, CA, Orlando, FL, andKeystone, SD, near Mt. Rushmore.

On, June 8, The Ledermans hosted the2nd annual RC Autocross Fundraiser attheir home in Swanton, and everyonethat attended had a great time. 100% ofthe money raised will go to Charity; thisyear we are supporting the Pat TillmanFoundation and Planned Pethood.

The innovationsFor five decades, the Porsche 911 hasset the standards for its class in terms ofperformance and efficiency. With eachgeneration, the Porsche 911 has raisedthe bar even higher. The Porscheengineers from Zuffenhausen andWeissach have reinvented the 911 againand again and have thus impressivelydemonstrated the innovativeness of thePorsche brand. Although the 911 hasconstantly been ahead of the field interms of sportiness, drivingperformance has never been thedevelopers’ only focus. The 911 hasalways stood out due to intelligent ideasand technologies which combinedperformance, everyday usability, safetyand durability.

1963: Three-part safetysteering systemFor its launch in 1963, the Porsche 911was fitted with rack-and-pinion steeringwhich had already been praised for itsprecise and very direct mode of

operation in previous test reports. Thissteering system was also part of thevehicle’s safety concept. The linkagehad a three-part design and the steeringbox was positioned in the centre of thevehicle. Therefore the steering wheeldid not move directly towards the driverin the event of frontal impact but, due tothe steering rod angle, moved awayfrom the driver via the impact tubes andthe release elements. Porsche continuedto improve the safety steering system.Subsequent generations also featured amesh tube as the crumple element. From 1991, Porsche was the first carmanufacturer to equip all its modelswith driver and front passenger airbags

as standard.

1965: Targa roll-overprotection barThe first standard safety cabriolet in theworld – these were the headlines whenPorsche presented the first 911 Targa atthe IAA in September 1965. Theinnovation in the new sports car modelwas the fixed Targa bar, derived fromthe roll-over protection bar which hadproven itself in motor racing events andguaranteed a high level of protection for

the occupants. With its removablefolding roof and the plastic rear windowthat could be folded down, the 911Targa was also extremely flexible andoffered its occupants no less than fourdifferent options for open-top or closed-top driving. And the hood concept, patented in August 1965, also had otheradvantages. It solved the problem of thefabric hood bulging unattractively atspeed on motorways just as reliably as itdid the issue of body distortion, whichwas common with convertibles at thattime. However, the main conceptbehind the 911 Targa was clearly itshigh standard of passive safety whichwas appreciated by many customers. Asearly as the beginning of the 1970s theTarga had an approximately 40 per centshare of the 911 series.

1966: Internally ventilated discbrakesEffective cooling of the brakes isimportant in a high-performance vehicle– only then can they stably andrepeatedly brake the car at high speeds. Therefore Porsche introduced internallyventilated discs to the 911 S as early as1966. These discs are double-walled so

that air can circulate and frictional heatis reduced. Furthermore, theperforations also have the advantagethat water spray is conducted awayfrom the discs very quickly. To improvecooling even more, the disc brakesystems on later 911 types also haveram air ducts that guide fresh airthrough channels onto the brake discsfrom the front – from openings in thespoiler. No other manufacturer investsso much know-how into the brakesystems on their series production carsas Porsche. This is because no othermanufacturer has as much experiencefrom motor racing as Porsche. Thereason being that Porsche has alwaysdeveloped the brake systems for itsracing cars itself. The rewards for allthis effort are not only brake systemsthat are extremely stable and thereforeplay their part in high-precision driving, the Porsche series production vehiclesalso always boast the shortest brakingdistances in their class – a significantsafety benefit on public roads.

Deb and I had a greattime in Traverse Cityat Parade. The weatherprediction for the weekindicated rain but itonly rained at nightand not while we wereout on the manydriving tours. We wereable to spend time withfriends that we have not seen since lastyear. We had a lovely evening withRoberta Heller, Denis Moore, and LesChecel from Northern Ohio Region andwe spent time with Nancy and JeffDeRoos from the Oregon Region. Weare already planning on next year’s tripto Monterey.

This month has a full calendar of eventsstarting with the autocross on July 7thand then there is the Rally Sport Regiontour of the Irish Hills on the 13th. On the20th, the Macks will be hosting a partyat their house in Tiffin. Finally, at theend of the month will be P2O inGranville, Ohio.

In August, Deb and I will be leading atour through northwest Ohio to thebrunch at Mon Ami restaurant on the18th. This is one of our favorite eventsand we’re looking forward to the trip!
