der RÜCKSPIEGEL

Dear der RÜCKSPIEGEL Readers,

Congratulations! You’ve at least opened the newsletter if you’re skimming this note. Please continue reading for valuable information and entertainment. We are just beginning to figure out how this publication thing works, and we are happy to report that there were no major injuries during the creation of the June issue. We hope to continue our perfect safety record into the foreseeable future. We estimate that we will be running the newsletter at optimum efficiency within the next 10 years.

We are grateful for the opportunity to assist our club and for this exciting assignment, but we are also greedy. We already receive contributions from several members that help complete the newsletter each month, but we need additional contributions. We hope that the newsletter can become more of a collaborative effort over time. We are not above employing psychological tactics if it comes to that, but we hope it doesn’t.

If no one outside the editorial offices provides us feedback, we will be forced to enact our emergency backup modification plan to transform the newsletter. Our proposed new title explains it well: im Rückspiegel auf der Rennstrecke. We would solely cover Porsche news from the track or on the way to the track—exclusively in German (we’re probably kidding, but don’t call our bluff: Das wird nicht gut ausgehen). This would only work if we get a few members who are willing to do domestic AND foreign correspondence work for eternal respect and gratitude in lieu of compensation. There is a small possibility that we may not have the authority required to enact the proposed newsletter change without a vote. If that turns out to be the situation, please vote early and often.

We know Lisa Soriano mentioned it in her President’s Letter, but we also wanted to take this opportunity to remind members that the 3-day MVR Grattan HPDE event starts Friday, July 26. Don’t miss your chance to have an exciting weekend at a fun track not too far from Toledo. We hope to see many of you there! For those who wanted to make it but couldn’t, fear not because Joe will provide a comprehensive photo essay from the weekend in a future issue.

Please join us in making the newsletter bolder, faster, and more fun, and/or we’ll be happy to do im Rückspiegel auf der Rennstrecke if that’s what the members want.

JULY 2019

This is an especially busy time of year in PCA for us. As many of you know, my husband Michael is the PCA National Awards Chair. He is in charge of the entire National Awards Program and is ultimately responsible for selecting the Region of the Year, Enthusiast of the Year, Family of the Year, as well as the Public Service Award winners. The National Membership, Newsletter and Website awards are also under his jurisdiction. In addition to being the Maumee Valley Region President, I too have a National position. Two years ago, I was appointed Parade Trophies Chair. Parade is PCA’s National Convention, which will be held Sunday-Saturday, July 21-27 in Boca Raton, FL. For the past 6 months, we have been designing the various trophies, medals, medallions, rosettes, as well as gifts to the Concours Judges and staff members. We have been working with companies in China, Canada, Washington, Michigan, and right here in Sylvania, Ohio, and every one of them is custom designed. It is a great deal of work, and we are honored that the EC has entrusted us with these responsibilities.

We recently attended Porsche/Audi Night at GermanFest in Ft. Wayne, Indiana (see pictures in this issue). Members from Central Indiana, Michiana, and Maumee Valley regions met at Chantilli’s restaurant and caravanned to Headwaters Park, where we entered as a group of around 100. There was a polka band, German food, and plenty of beer. It was great talking to longtime MVR members Gene and Kathleen Aufderhaar. Thursday night was the Leg’s n Lederhosen contest which was won by CIR Ft. Wayne member Jimmy Arata.

At the end of the month, we have our Driver’s Education event at Grattan Raceway: Friday-Sunday, July 26-28. The driver’s education program was designed to help participants improve their driving abilities and better understand vehicle dynamics and driving safety in a safe structured and controlled teaching and learning environment.

To register for this event visit http://Clubregistration.net, and if you have any questions please contact Tony Calabrese: [email protected], Todd Mierzwiak: [email protected], or Craig Zenil: [email protected].

I would like to welcome our newest members Diane French and Andrew Rahaman. They along with all of our new members for the past year will be receiving name tags courtesy of Arbor Motion.

I want to remind everyone that our New Member Family Picnic at Secor Metropark is coming up on Sunday, July 14. This is a great opportunity for longtime members and new members to get together, so please plan to join us.

Thanks,Lisa

MVR - DID YOU KNOW?A few of you may know that the creation of the first automobile capable of human transport began back in the middle 1700’s, by a French inventor Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot, using steam as the primary mode of propulsion. It wasn’t until the early 1800’s, and then spanning a full century into the early 1900’s, that a torrent of innovation by French, German, Austrian and American engineers brought to the teeming masses production of the automobile we absolutely love to drive today.

Our die hard track members may also know of the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), an organization established in 1904 France that was created to champion the passions and pursuits of this new, burgeoning automobile industry – promoting innovation and safety among the new automobile manufacturers, owners, organizations, and racers that sprang into existence during the first few decades of the 20th century.

One hundred and fifteen years later the FIA, still a voluntary association, has built itself into the world’s leading sports federation for road safety and auto racing. Consisting of 246 member organizations in 145 countries, its most prominent role is in the licensing and sanctioning of various sports car and touring car racing, including: Formula One, the World Endurance Championship, and the World Rally Championship.

Following the long history of innovation

in car design and manufacturing, in 2011 FIA president Jean Todt and a few close friends discussed the opportunity of creating an annual electric motor car racing event - one that could take place on temporary city-centre street circuits in prominent cities across the globe. Todt wanted to design a car race using vehicles similar to the non-electric cars of Formula One, but that introduced electric systems as the primary mode of propulsion. And so, the Formula E Series was born – a class of motorsport that uses only electric powered cars on a city street circuit of 1.2 to 2.1 miles. The inaugural (2014 - 2015) Formula E Series held eleven races in ten host cities, with the first of the E-Prix’s in Beijing, China.

Today, these electric cars have evolved tremendously with thirteen global manufacturers committed to the Formula E Series, a few of whom include: Renault, Audi, McLaren, BMW, Nissan, DS Automobiles, and now Mercedes Benz and Porsche. The FIA requires the cars to be powered by batteries that have an overall weight of no more than 320 kg (a whopping 705.5 lbs!); limited to no more than 200 kW (270 bhp); adapted with a power-saving mode of no more than 150 kW (203 bhp); and incorporate a ‘fanboost’ up to 180 kW (243 bhp). As reported by many different outlets, zero to sixty in these cars can now reach to just under 3.0 seconds. The teams running this 2018-2019 season are Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler, BMW i Andretti, DS Techeetah Formula E Team, Envision

Virgin Racing, Geox Dragon, HWA Racelab, Mahindra Racing, NIO Formula E Team, Nissan E.Dams, Panasonic Jaguar Racing, and Venturi Formula E Team.

While announced in July 2017 that Porsche’s new motorsport strategy would have a clear focus on electro-mobility and the GT class – it wasn’t planned until 2019 that a Porsche works team would formally compete in Formula E. Porsche’s newsroom announced: “This realignment of motorsport is derived from the direction set out for the company in Porsche Strategy 2025, which will see Porsche develop a combination of pure GT vehicles and fully electric sports cars, such as the first fully battery-powered Mission E road car. Entering Formula E and achieving success in this category are the logical outcomes for our Mission E. The growing freedom for in-house technology developments makes Formula E attractive to us.” “Porsche is working with alternative, innovative drive concepts. For us, Formula E is the ultimate competitive environment for driving forward the development of high-performance vehicles in areas such as environmental friendliness, efficiency and sustainability.”

But don’t worry all you GT fans! Michael Steiner, Member of the Executive Board for Research and Development at Porsche AG states: “A diversity of manufacturers and the quality of both the WEC and IMSA have led us to strengthen our commitment and concentrate our energies on using the 911 RSR. We want to be number one. To do that, we must invest in technology.” So, Porsche continues its primary focus on international racing, electric and GT, with a strategic investment in the 911 RSR as part of the GT class of the FIA’s World Endurance Championship.

The 2019 - 2020 Formula E Series calendar has just been announced and includes these host cities: Ad Diriyah, Santiago, Mexico City, Hong Kong, Rome, Paris, Seoul, Berlin, New York, and London. This will be the busiest season yet for the series says the FIA: “promising more wheel to wheel combat, new rules and rivalries, more inner city street racing, and the most comprehensive calendar to date…” Be sure to check out fiaformulae.com for details on the locations, teams, drivers, rules /regulations, and how you can participate with fanboost.

Personally, I can’t wait to sneak a further peek into Porsche’s E future and their participation in the upcoming E Series events. What incredible technology and racing passion to come! We are, literally, in for a great ride. ; )

I hope you enjoyed this article on E racing, its background, and Porsche’s investment in the Formula E Series. The author thanks the following sources for information contained in this article: Wikipedia.org, fiaformulae.com, electricautosport.com, rapidtables.com and newsroom.porsche.com.

JULY 2019

219

February 2019

One of my favorite things to do onthe web is to go into a carcompany’s web site, head straightto their configurator and buildsomething. Sometimes it will be astripper, just the basic car to seehow cheap I can build it. And moretimes than not, I go all in addingevery option to see how far I cantake it to the other extreme. I trydifferent colors, different interiors, different wheels and I spare noexpense on the performanceoptions. If you are going to buildsomething, you may as well go big.Right?

I love me some Porsches! Ownedtwelve of ‘em (and counting). Butyou know what? I’ve never bought anew one. The Turner master plansays I get to do that at some point inmy short life on this revolvingglobe. Thinking back to the BrandLoyalty series I wrote a couple ofmonth back, you know I’ve got toget my boys out of college, proppedup and on their own. Could takeyears. It’s funny, I even remindthem from time to time (likeweekly), that they’re holding meback. I am joking here, but justbarely.

Point is, I love the Porscheconfigurator. I build cars on it allthe time, like maybe 2-3 times permonth. OK, maybe 3-4 times permonth. But that’s all I’m admittinghere. I build Carrera’s (mostlyTurbos and GT3s), Boxsters,

Caymans (especially Caymans; love‘em), Cayennes (just in case we endup needing a new one), Mecans(because they are awesome),Panameras (have you read myaction-adventure novels? Theyfactor somewhat in the story line),and 918’s (cause they are stupidcrazy and it’s fun to see if you canconfigure one to $1,000,000—yeswith reversed pinky held to mouth,Dr. Evil style).

I will build one, giggle and say tomy wife, “Hey I built a new Porsche, wanna see it?” She’ll glance over atme, with a sideways look, glasseslowered to her nose, and ask if Iwent all in this time or not. No I willproudly exclaim that I built aninexpensive Cayenne - for her. Doesshe want to see it? Then she’ll ask ifit is like the other dozen I have“built” for her lately and not gettingher sarcasm, I’ll say this one isdifferent. (Yeah, it’s red.)Sometimes she looks, sometimesshe doesn’t and she reminds me (forlike the thousandth time) that we’renot doing anything before theaforementioned boys are out ofschool, cars paid off, bills paid off,ETC. Oh yeah—heard that onebefore. So then, what the heck, I’llreconfigure the car as a CayenneTurbo S with every option under thesun. $180K! Yeah, that’ll show her!

TECHNICAL Q&A

Is Fluctuating Oil Temperature Normal – 2014 Boxster S

Question: Once my engine reaches operating temperature (coolant 204 degrees) I find the oil temperature fluctuating between 187 to 210 degrees. Jumping 2-3 degrees at a time. Oil level is normal. Is this fluctuating oil temperature normal? Answer: Oil takes longer to warm up than the coolant simply because there’s no oil thermostat to regulate flow. Once the engine’s coolant reaches operating temperature oil starts warming up much faster and hence you see the 2-3-degree jumps. It is quite normal.

Happy Porsche’ing,

Early Morning Hesitation– 1986 944

Question: My 1986 944 non-turbo is having hesitation early in the am. It was running fine last weekend. It was in the shop for new tires and a 25- or 26-point check-up.

All was good. Several weeks ago, same issue. The owner of the shop told me there could be water in the tank, because the car was sitting idle all winter.

I thought it might be the plugs or wires, but he disagreed. There is 18,000 original miles.

Answer: Submitted by George Beuselinck. While water in the fuel might be a cause, if the car runs well after it warms up, then I have another guess.

I noticed that you have had a lot of rain in the past week. I’m guessing that moisture in the early morning air is leading to high voltage leakage and misfiring. That leads me to jump to the conclusion that you have an ignition wire problem.

I would suggest that you change your plug wires and ignition lead with new ones (that are not 33 years old). It’s a job that you can do yourself, but replace only one wire at a time, so you don’t get them out of sequence. If that doesn’t work, then your

mechanic might be right, but I don’t think so.

Common Problems – 1984 944

Question: Most common problems with this year and model?

Answer: Submitted by George Beuselinck. 1) Improper repairs/lack of maintenance by previous owners/mechanics2) Ignition problems, no start3) Fuel tank leakage4) Suspension wear and worn shocks/struts5) Clutch6) Electrical7) Power Steering Passenger Floor Board Water – 2012 Cayenne Question: Pulled the two plugs under front wheels thinking that was why my passenger side was filling up with water. Did not solve the problem. Any ideas besides that!! Everything else seems fine.

Answer: Submitted by Peter Smith. There are drains also behind the fender liners that won’t let the cowlings drain. We remove those leaves and junk that just plug them up. Also the ac housing drain seals up and then the water that condenses in the AC housing will leak on the carpet. Do both those things and that should take care of your leaks.
