Lisa and I spent the first week of August in Sa-vannah, GA attending the 56th annual Porsche Parade with the Isleys, Mierzwiaks, and Schoens. This year nearly 1600 Porsche enthusiasts gathered to celebrate their love for

their favorite marque.

The weeklong festivities included many sightseeing opportunities in ad-dition to driving related activities. Some of the exclusive trips included visiting a plantation home and spend-ing time and dining with the proprie-tors, Rusty White, creator of the Robb Report, and his wife Robin. Many of us also traveled to Jacksonville, FL to visit Brumos Racing and Autoworks where we met Hall of Fame Driver Hurley Haywood. In addition, we were granted entrance into their pri-vate museum.

One of my favorite activities of the week is the Michelin Drive and Com-pare. This year, we took 2 Cayman Rs on an autocross course, one with Michelin Pilot Sport Tires, and the other with a competitor’s tires. While you are only permitted to sign up for one run per day we were there for a majority of the day. Lisa even drove the course 1 or 2 times herself.

One of the highlights of the week oc-curred on the final day of Parade. On the afternoon of Saturday August 6, we participated in a Parade along with 173 other Porsches that travelled the

racecourse for the American Grand Prize celebrating the Centennial of Savannah’s racing history.

One of the most remarkable aspects of attending Parade is that although you meet up with people only once a year for one week, you feel as if you’ve made a friend for life. It is at events like these where PCA’s motto really is true, “It’s not just the Cars, it’s the People.” So, the next time a Parade is close to home, I definitely recommend you plan to attend for a few days, if not the whole week.

I am truly looking forward to the Schoen’s Party on September 24, they are bringing back the Chili Cook Off, and it should be a great time. Next month is the Dyno Day at PURE TUNING on October 8, and our 2nd fundraiser, the Speak Easy themed Casino Night at the Browns on Octo-ber 22. Keep an eye out for your Holi-day Party Invitations, they should be in the mail in early October; it prom-ises to be another great event at the TMA’s Glass Pavilion.

It is amazing to see the number of members who have attended at least one event this year; thank you to eve-ryone that has accepted my invitation. For those of you who have still not attended an event this year, there is still time for you to take the opportu-nity to reconnect with your fellow Porsche Enthusiasts.

Thanks, Michael

Remember to keep the blink alive!!!!!!

September 2011

As a Porsche employee from Septem-ber 1961 to May 1964, I worked the 39th and 40th Frankfurt Shows as member of the Porsche Team.

The Frankfurt Show, known locally as the "Frankfurter Messe", was, in those days, the world's most important and prestigious car show by far. Much bigger than London or Paris, or any-thing this side of the Atlantic. The manufacturer's displays were spread throughout several massive halls...the size of football fields. And the major marquees fought fiercely for prime spots in the biggest halls.

The show, held every two years in October, ran for about two weeks. It began with preview days for the mo-toring press, important dealers, and distributors before opening up to the general public.

As the exhibition date neared, excite-ment at the factory would grow palpa-bly. Show cars were selected., care-fully primped at Reuters, and popular accessories added. In those years we had 356 Bs and Cs of different colors and horsepowers, 60, 75, and 90, as well as a 904. In October 1963, we also showcased the 911...initially des-ignated "901".

I clearly remember, several weeks before the show, getting our first close-up look at the new "Butzi" designed car in the parking lot behind the fac-tory and being unimpressed. We were all so used to 356 styling that we thought the 901 looked "too Italian".

But then, what did we know!

Our "show team" was comprised of a dozen or so sales reps and secretaries

from the Export, Inland, and Tourist Delivery Departments all under the auspices of Sales Promotion whose boss at the time was Jochen Peiper of WW2 fame. We would have several pre-show briefings. Drills on the key sales and technical points of our new cars. As well as those of our competi-tors. And we'd be measured for our show attire: light blue blazers and grey slacks, which we were allowed to keep after the show!

We worked the stand every day and then in the evenings were expected to go out on the town with Porsche deal-ers, distributors and key customers consuming vast quantities of local beer and "Apfelwein". The resulting hangovers were not exactly an ideal way to start each new day on the stand, which often required us to switch rapidly between German, French and English!

It was the cars at Frankfurt that were the stars. Period. No scantily dressed models draped any of our machines.

We gave our sales pitches. Handed out brochures. Wrote orders. Distributed goodies like Porsche pins and posters. And organized test drives for the most likely customers. Porsche had several test cars available for high speed auto-bahn runs during show hours.

It was during one such demo run that veteran test driver, Herr Faisst, was involved in a serious high-speed crash. Happily, he and his passenger sur-vived...but only just. Coincidentally, it was this same driver who gave me the driving test required of all employees who would be driving company cars.

Brake bleeding is necessary before every DE and once every two years (as per Porsche recommendations).

The reason is that Brake fluid absorbs water. And as you are now very aware, because of the friction, heat is generated while braking. This heat is transferred to the calipers, where the brake fluid resides. Water boils at a much lower temperature than brake fluid (212 vs 400 deg.F).

Once the water in the fluid starts to boil, it will generate bubbles of water vapor in the fluid and will now allow compression and brake efficiency is lost (mushy brake pedal).

With the system pressurized start with the right rear wheel and pop off the two bleed caps.

Place the drain hose and wrench on the nipple and loosen it. Make sure to

(Continued on page 17)

Power Bleeder and supplies for bleeding brakes

The easiest way to bleed is to use a Power Bleeder.

Pour in one liter of your favorite brake fluid.

Connect the cap to the Brake Reser-voir and pump to 20 lbs of pressure.

I place it in a bucket just in case of spills or if the pressure line breaks. This way you contain the fluid which is a paint solvent.

Set up in use in a Boxster

Brake caliper showing the nipple and bleed cap

catch the flow in a receptacle.

Do both nipples until you get new fluid coming out.

If you alternate fluid colors from blue to gold and back, you can clearly see when the new color starts coming out.

(Continued from page 16)

Then move to the left rear, the right front and finally the left front.

Even though it’s not part of the brakes, it is a good idea to bleed the clutch at

the same time. First you need to de-press and hold down the clutch pedal while you bleed it. You can either have an assistant sit

there and do it, or just use a piece of 2 by 4. To find the clutch bleed nipple, look on the left, upper side of the transmission. It’s easier to see than to get at it.

You bleed it the same way as the cali-pers.

After you finish and remove the Power Bleeder, make sure to check the fluid level in the reservoir is full.

For daily driving and AX, the stock brake pads are great, but for fast track days you really need a specialized brake pad that can take the additional heat generated by the higher speeds. If not, you will experience brake fade.

(Continued on page 18)

the sensors must be zip tied out of the way.

If installing Racing pads, keep in mind that they are not DOT legal. They will not brake properly unless they are VERY hot, as I found out for myself on my way to Sebring a few years ago. If you would like additional informa-tion on Porsche Brakes, other compo-nents, and many DIY Projects, please visit my website at: www.PedrosGarage.com. Happy Porsche’ing, Pedro

I particularly like PAGID Orange Rac-ing Pads.

(Continued from page 17)

They really are orange .... well, at least when you mount them, because after the first couple of laps the heat turns them black.

These pads have no sensor holes, so
