November 2011

By Michael Soriano

While the autumn season is underway, the cool, brisk air and majestic color changes of the leaves inevitably means that the time to put our beloved vehicles into storage will soon be near. Thankfully, au-tumn has cooperated and

given us many wonderful days to en-joy our cars, and a number of events have given us great opportunities to take advantage of this wonderful weather. At the beginning of the last month, Vin Devers hosted their 2nd annual European Car Show, and I am pleased to report that once again the Porsche club had the most impressive turnout.

On the beautiful day of October 8 a large number of Maumee Valley members assembled at the Michigan Technical Resource Park, the former Dana Test Track, and took advantage of a very unique opportunity to spend a Saturday morning driving on both an Autocross course and a speedway. For those of us that arrived bright and early, we were able to take 1 practice plus 3 runs on the Autocross course followed by 3 laps on the speedway and then had the option to do it again taking an additional 3 runs and an ad-ditional 3 laps. From there, a large group of Porsches set out to enjoy lunch in Archibold at The Barn fol-lowed by a Fall Color Tour which went from Fort Defiance to Fort Meigs hosted by Rally Sport Region. The great weather continued into the next

day which happened to be Cars and Coffee, and our members turned out in force, with over 25 PCA members in attendance.

On October 22, Rich and Susan Brown hosted our second fundraiser of the year, a Card Party; their son-in-law Anthony and I served as dealers for the event. Those in attendance had a fantastic time playing Blackjack, Texas Hold’em, and Pai Gow. I want to thank the Browns for organizing such a wonderful event. Congratula-tions to Chris Krauser who had the most chips at the end of the evening and to Marshall Bellman who won the signed bottle of Adobe Road wine the Isley’s generously donated to raffle off.

Our Holiday party is very near on Fri-day, November 18. The Holiday Party is one of our premier social events and by popular demand will again be held at the Glass Pavilion at the Toledo Museum of Art. Everyone who at-tended last year’s event had a marvel-ous time, and the Social Committee and I have gone to great measures to try to provide an equally spectacular event this year.

The December Social Event will be held on Saturday, December 10 at Restaurante` de Mexico in Findlay. Please refer to DER Ruckspiegel and our website http://mm.pca.org for more information. Also, if you are not receiving the e-mail reminders and updates, please notify Lisa at

A few weekends ago, Deb and I took off for Houghton Lake Michigan (about 230 miles north) in the Boxster. The temperature was about 75 the sun shining and clear. So naturally, we dropped the top, cranked up the radio, rolled up the windows and cruised down the road. At 75 mph I was the slowest car on the road! And, every time I started to move with the traffic, which there was plenty of, Deb would say to me: “You know… if three cars are speeding past a policeman, he’s

going to ticket the sports car.” Know-ing that she’s right, I would reluctantly slow down.

Traffic in Michigan always amazes me. Everyone and I mean everyone, drives in the left lane! It doesn’t mat-ter if there’s no other car on the road; they stay in the left lane! What hap-pened to the “olden days” of passing on the left? Sorry, I digress…

About 2 hours north, at the Birch Run (Continued on page 16)

Page 16: Der RÜCKSPIEGELmm.pca.org/pdf/DerRuckspiegel/November2011.pdfAd from the past 11 In the Zone 14 MVR Mart 20 the Checkered Flag! 22 ... Museum of Art. Everyone who at-tended last year’s

We spent the night in Prudenville (Houghton Lake) got up the next day to a beautiful sunrise over the lake and headed north to Petoskey.

Houghton Lake is the largest lake in Michigan. A natural spring fed clear water lake is a favorite of boaters and people who love to Ice Fish. They have one of the most celebrated Tip-Up-Town’s in the USA. However, we’re there and it’s a perfect 75 de-grees and not a cloud in the sky. That evening was spectacular! The sun was setting behind us and the moon was coming up over the trees in front. As the full moon rose over the lake, it created a white sidewalk like reflec-tion all the way across the lake. Fan-tastic! We sat there mesmerized.

The next morning was cool and clear, about 40 degrees but warming fast. We Jumped into the Boxster and headed North...

The weather by then was fantastic! About 100 miles north of Houghton Lake is Petoskey Michigan, gateway to the Boynes, 50 miles west is Trav-erse City, another great vacation area. This was the best time of the year to drive up north. The colors were fantas-tic the Month of October, Again, no Porsches! We drove to Harbor Springs and had lunch at the Stafford’s Pier Restaurant overlooking beautiful boats! 50-60 footers! We jumped back into the car and drove the “Tunnel of Trees” along the Little Traverse Bay. Colors, colors and more colors. The trees actually make a tunnel over the road so thick your GPS won’t work. We stopped at the Pleasant View Win-ery, Harbor Springs Winery and when I was headed to the next one, Deb said “enough wine!”

exit, is “Tony’s” an oober bacon res-taurant on I-75. A must stop if you like bacon. We do, we did on the way home! Also, if you like chicken, Fran-kenmuth is just down the road... If you’ve never stopped there, you must try it the next time you head north. Our objective was to do a “Wine” tour of Michigan. First stop, St Julian’s in Frankenmuth, a Very nice winery. Did I mention “free Tasting”? They let you pick from a great many wines from dry to sweet. Not bad at all, at least as well as I can remember after too many sips. They make Vodka from grapes. Also, not bad! Remember I said “free” tasting? $50 later, we took our packages and had lunch at the Bavar-ian Inn Restaurant. Afterwards, we slowly walked back to the Boxster and On to Houghton Lake.

We took the back roads to Bay City (because I missed the turn to I-75) and really enjoyed the colors and quiet. Once we got through and past Bay City and over the Zilwaulkee Bridge, there was less traffic and clean air. As I get closer to 80 mph I hear “remember what I said earlier?” Yes Dear however…! The Boxster is at the top of her game around 80. Smooth and making just the right ex-haust sound. Note: up to this point, no other Porsches have been seen on the road??? Around Westbranch you are now in rolling hills and hardwood trees as far as you can see. Westbranch also has “The Dream” and the “Nightmare” some of my favorite golf courses, but alas, we cruise by. You should have seen the color!!! We’ve been going north for over 20 years and never hit it at its peak until this year. Wow!!! Reds, Yellows, Golden Browns, Greens etc… it was fantastic!

17

November 2011

I have never seen more motorcycles in one area in my life! I’m talking about the big beautiful cruisers. Everyone was enjoying the fantastic weather. We dropped the top again and started back to our cottage enjoying the fresh clean air along the way. So we headed back to Petoskey and stopped by the Odawa Indian Casino. I was surprised to see that it’s now a big resort casino. We hadn’t been there since the new casino opened. It’s very nice, clean and friendly. Back in the car, back on the road, and we’re heading back to Houghton Lake. As the sun was get-ting lower the trees were changing colors right in front of us. What a sight!!! We took 27 back to the lake; less traffic and different views.

The next morning, we got up, cleaned the cottage and hit the road. We try to be on I-75 before 10am because later, the traffic is awful. About 1 ½ hours later we were at the Birch Run exit and pulled into “Tony’s” for lunch. If you’ve never been there, you’re miss-ing it. Can you imagine a BLT on thick sliced bread and 1 pound of ba-con? A 12 egg omelet? Only at Tony’s.

Back on the road the traffic picks up,

but the weather is fantastic!

The top goes down, the music goes up. After about an hour or so, traffic is locked into the passing lane again!

As we cruise back to Toledo, we can smell the flowers, grass and morning rain. Soon, clouds, snow and cold air will replace these wonderful scents and the Boxster will be covered up for a long winter nap. However, right now, all is well. We blow past Ann Arbor and roll into the Toledo area. The Boxster did her job well. We av-eraged 28 miles per gallon at 75- 80 miles/hour and it was a pleasure driv-ing.

We finally did see another Porsche around Sylvania. Funny, we traveled about 700 + miles and saw only one other???

We wish for you many more pleasur-able miles such as ours, in your Por-sche. If you can, get it on the road, open it up and enjoy the music it makes.

Der RÜCKSPIEGEL

The Porsche’s have been put up for the winter. Boo!!!

There are still plenty of MVR events to think about. The Holiday party will have been held by the time you get this. That will be fol-lowed up by a December dinner meet-ing in Findlay that is being arranged by Ruth Gulliford. January will bring the 2012 planning meeting.

Remember that 2012 will be Maumee Valley’s 40th anniversary. Jeff Voll-mar is busy working on the details of the events for the celebration to be held in October. If you have any ideas or are willing to help in some way you should let him know.

Thanks to Pete and Deb MacDonald for the great story on their trip to northern Michigan.

When you need car service, laundry service, legal help, a new or used car, insurance, or eye glasses, Remember the advertisers you see in the der Ruckspiegel. They are the ones that are supporting our Region.

Flash your headlights at a fellow Por-sche owner on the road!! Keep the kindred spirit alive!!
