From the Driver’s SeatBy Michael Soriano

I was recently contact-ed by our Chief Driv-ing Instructor and no-tified that due to cir-cumstances beyondour control, MVRwillno longer be co-host-ing the September20-22DEatMid-Ohiowith Alleghany. How-

ever, I am extremely pleased to announcethat there are two other opportunities toparticipate in car-related activities thatsame weekend. Rick Mammel, Presidentof Rally Sport has extended an invitationto our members to join them for a 3-dayDE at Gingerman in South Haven, MI.And, we have also been contacted by TheToledo Club requesting our members at-tend The Concours de Elegance-AL-MOST from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sundayof that weekend.

Wehadanumberof thoroughlyenjoyableevents throughout July beginning withour Autocross on Sunday, July 7 at theOwens Community College Center forEmergency Preparedness. We had aneven greater number of participants thisyear than in previous years, and are hop-ing to have even more next year. ThankstoGregHerr for all his hardwork in orga-nizing this very fun and successful event. On Saturday, July 13, several MaumeeValley members travelled to Ann Arborto join members of Rally Sport on a driv-ing tour of The Irish Hills and a buffetlunch at the adorable Beach Bar in ClarkLake, MI. Thanks to Dave and NorahCooper for including us in this delightful

annual event. I was told that they’re plan-ning a few surprises for next year’s event. The following day was Cars and Coffee, and we had another fantastic turnout; it isalways such an enjoyable way to spend afew hours on a Sunday morning. On Sat-urday July 20, Robb and Shellie hostedtheir 2nd annual Party at theMacks in Tif-fin. Quite a fewmembers travelled to Tif-fin and were treated to a delicious spreadof Ribs, Chicken, and Pulled Pork plus anice selection of Beer and Wine. We allhad a great time and I want to again thankRobb and Shellie for hosting anotherspectacular event. The final weekend ofJuly saw a few of our members attendingP2O in Granville, OH, and the Concoursd’Elegance of America at St. John’s inPlymouth, MI, featuring the 911 in honorof its 50th anniversary.

August and September bring a multitudeof events beginning with the PerrysburgCarShowonAugust 3.Our nextBusinessMeeting is on Thursday, August 8, at 7p.m. in theVinDeversConferenceRoom, and everyone is invited to attend. August 2013

Once again, Deb and I drove to one of ourFavorite Porsche events: P2O. Ratherthan get up early and drive down, againthis year we stayed at the Cherry ValleyLodge in Newark Ohio Friday night; it’sclose to Granville and Newark. Theweather was beautiful Friday and we hadthe top down all the way to Granville. Irecently had John Jennens (The Car Port)change out the IMS, RMS, clutch, plugs, etc… on the Boxster so we were lookingforward to the trip. The Boxster ran greatand I averaged about 30mpg on the road! Thanks John.

Friday night, Byers Porsche of Columbushosted a P2O welcome party at the Bux-ton Inn. TheBuxton is over 200 years old,has a great restaurant and is said to behaunted. (http://www.buxtoninn.com/).President Lincoln, President McKinleyand Harriet Beecher Stowe are some ofthe famous peoplewho have stayed there.

Saturday morning we were awakened bythe sound of rain. So, after a week of medetailing the Boxster… Rain! Parkingfor the event opened at 6:30 am.Registra-tion opened at 7:30 and was extremelywell organized, even in the rain. We ar-rived in town about 8:30 and there were

already hundreds of Porsches parked onBroadway.Wewereushered to the far, farend of the street but were still close to allthe action.Wespentmost of thedayunderumbrellas looking at cars, takingpictures, talking to other Porsche owners and ofcourse buying stuff. I ran into Tom andDeb Isley in line at the Performance AutoSpa tent. We both dropped lots of cashthere. Tom said that Jonna andDanDess-ner and Jeff Fort and Staci Lloyd werealso there. Deb and Iwalked around look-ing for Maumee Valley window stickersbut with more than 400 cars…

What a great city to have the event, foodall around us. The Major Sponsors wereByers Imports, Performance Auto Spa(with all the Griot’s Garage stuff), Stod-dard, and Forgeline Motorsports. Ven-dors, memorabilia sales, photographers, detailing demonstrations and car insur-ance salesmen were all well represented. The MORPCA trailer was selling teeshirts and ice cream cones.

Granville is a very nice town to host P2O.Well over 400, close to 500 Porsches(even in the rain) lined Broadway and

many more were parked on the sidestreets. Granville is a great place to havethis event. Deb and I have been going toP2O ever since they came back to Ohiofrom Michigan. It quickly out grew thesmall college town of Oxford Ohio andseems to have found a new home inGranville. MORPCA (Mid Ohio RegionPCA) took over P2O and have made ittheir own and have done a very good jobwith the event. The 50 or so awards werehanded out about 3-3:30pm. And no, Ididn’t get one. I can’t imaginewhy.Therewere only about 50 other Arctic SilverBoxsters in town.

The Granville Inn hosted a Wine recep-tion party featuring a live band and heavyhors d’oeuvres with an open bar after theevent and I hear it was a rousing success.

(Continued from page 7) Sunday, for those who stayed over, adrive through the hills of southern Ohiowas available. I hear all participants had agreat time.

I talked to many locals who asked meabout my car and thanked me and all P-people for coming to their town.Granville opened their town and hospital-ity to everyone in attendance. Thank youagain Granville.

Once again, if you haven’t been to P2O,you shouldput it onyour calendar for nextyear.

Go to http://p2o.morpca.org/ , pastevents, P2O 2012, 2011 (2013’s not upyet) and check out all the pictures andevents. If you come across an Arctic Sil-ver Boxster with a rear luggage rack, un-der a tree in the rain, that’s mine.

Yes it rained but there werestill many fine Porsches tosee

August 2013

My time at Porsche happened to overlapwithHans Peter's as hewasworking therein 1963 on the 904 production. And as aresult, we were able to reminisce aboutseveral mutual acquaintances and formercolleagues. But even more interesting, perhaps, was when he told me that he hadspent ayear at aBritishboarding school in1955--or thereabouts--to improve his En-glish.

While there, he had apparently been invit-ed to spend a day on a small boat that ourfamily had on theRiver Thames atDatch-et--right across from the grounds ofWindsor Castle where the Royals used toride their horses. The boat was a convert-ed lifeboat that had actually taken part inthe Dunkirk rescue and by 1955 had seenmuch better days. It eventually died ofwoodworm and was replaced by a fiber-glass number.

But Hans Peter remembers the trip to thisday because my mother had quizzed himconstantly on everything he sawalong theriver bank and then made him repeat theitem after her, in English. He says that hehas never forgotten the lesson--eventhough it was more than 60 years ago!

The kicker is that my mother, who wasborn in Berlin, never got over her strongGerman accent...so one really has towon-der how good a lesson it actually was!

Frankly, I don't remember the incident, butmeetingHansPeter.Talkingabout thegood old days. And then seeing so manyMaumee Valley Porsche Club mem-bers...made this avery special day indeed.

As mentioned by Michael in last month's"From the Driver's Seat", I had the rareopportunity of attending the TraverseCity Porsche Parade--my first Treffen ev-er. And it was everything I could havehoped for.

Not onlywas it a rare chance to study sev-eral hundred immaculately turned outPorsches from every age displayed on theResort's well manicured grounds...andtalk to dozens of enthusiastic and knowl-edgeable owners... it was also fascinatingto see how the PCA puts on an event ofthis magnitude.

My previous experience with the PCAgoes back to my time at the factory in theearly 60's when plane loads of PCAerswould arrive for their annual en massepick-up of new cars...60 or more as I re-call.

These were always grand events. Orga-nized with typical Teutonic precision. From the lines of shiny new cars waitingfor their excited owners in front of someSchloss, To the factory tours, and thenightly banquets hosted by Porsche heav-ies. To the race track tutorial under thesupervision of racing icons like HuschkeVon Hanstein, Jo Bonnier, and EddyBarth.

This year's Traverse City Parade lookedtobeno less impressive in scopeandorga-nization.

But the highlight for me was a chat I hadwith Hans Peter Porsche--thanks to thetimely intervention of Michael, Lisa andtheir good friend, PorscheClubManager,Paul Gregor.

Danny Young

Porsche Technician

Sometimes Danny Young misses thefriends he's made around the country--and overseas--while he periodicallytrains to repair Porsches. But the 41-year-old technician, who has been working onPorsches at Porsche of Ann Arbor for anamazing 19 years, now enjoys weekendautocross events in his 944 Turbo andcoaching his son racing go-karts, and he'sbeen a Porsche club member for the pastthree years. Growing up in the Detroitarea, his fatherwas aGeneralMotors life-time employee, and Danny admits as ayouth hewent through a phase of Firebirdand Camaro lust, although his first carwas an air-cooled '76 Volkswagen Beetlewith fuel injection that he learned tomaintain. His first Porsche experiencewas when he was 13 years old, and hisaunt's boyfriend gave him an 80mph ridein an '88 930 Turbo, and it left a lastingimpression.

Danny was sponsored for Porsche train-ing and travelled to Reno and Atlanta to

the company's headquarters to begin thedifficult process of learning to be aPorsche technician. The first car he re-pairedwas a 1986911 that had a leak in itsoil return tubes. In 2006 Danny was rec-ognized as oneof the top20 technicians inthe country, and was awarded a trip toGermany. He's since worked on a coupleof Carrera GTs from Canada, which hesays have required the most care and fo-cus of all of the Porsches he fixes andmaintains. “You have to focus on theCar-rera GT valve adjustment. You want thevalve timing to be right on, and it doesn'ttake much to knock it off.” The longesttask he's done is a complete rebuild of theengine on a 1977 911. “It took me 72hours, but people like old Porsches.”

The most common tasks Danny does aremaintenance related, and he says it's sea-sonal, not as many of his customers drivetheir cars in the winter, of course. Dannyhas driven a Cayenne S back from Vir-ginia, and he's taken trips in the same carto Florida, which he thoroughly enjoyed.

As Porsche owners, we have chosenwhatwe feel are some of the best engineeredcars on the road. In many ways they cer-tainly are; they’ve proven themselves onthe road as well as on the track to bedurable and dependable. But these reli-able ridesneedperiodicmaintenance, andin some cases, upgrades and improve-ments, to protect andpreserve thevalueofour investments.

The purpose of this column is to remindand inform. In this first installment, let’slook at the 1997 – 2005Boxster (986) andthe 1999 - early 2005 911 (996). The sub-ject is the Intermediate Shaft (IMS) bear-ing failure. I know, I know, by nowmanyof the owners of these otherwise excellentcars get glassy-eyed and bored with themere mention of this potentially catas-trophic failure. “It doesn’t affect me, Idrive my car very gently”, or “It doesn’taffect me, I drive my car like it was in-tended – briskly.” The fact is there is noproven correlation with how a car is driv-en to the incidenceofbearing failure. Fre-quent oil changes can’t hurt – and upgrad-ing to a magnetic oil drain plug would beagood first step indetecting anearlybear-ing failure - but sadly, it’s no guarantee.Choosing to ignore the potential problemis a choice, albeit a poor one. So just con-sider yourself reminded. And let meknow how the water is there in “Denial.”

If you happen to be a new owner of aPorsche of this vintage, then here’s someinformation you might want to consider:

Simply put, the sealed IMS bearingPorsche used was not intended or de-signed to be immersed in oil. Unfortu-nately, inside the engine is – guess what –

OIL! When this “sealed” bearing loses itsgrease by beingwashed out by engine oil,the bearing starts the rapid process of dis-integrating and scattering parts of itselfthrough the oil passageways of your pre-cious engine, causing total destruction. With the cost of a replacement engine ap-proaching $17K to $20K, this is no smallconcern.

Fortunately, there is a remedy. A compa-ny called LN Engineering has come upwith an upgraded ceramic bearing whichis much more durable than the original. The cost of replacement is relatively low- $1000 - $1500 -depending on whetheryou have amanual or a tiptronic transmis-sion. Since the procedure to replace thebearing requires the removal of the clutchand flywheel inmanual cars, it’s obvious-ly smart to take a good look at the condi-tion of the clutch components. If theclutch and/or flywheel are nearing the endof their lives, it’s a good time to replacethem – which can add $700 - $1700. Theother obvious “while you’re in there”item would be the installation of an im-proved Rear Main Seal (RMS) – the sealat the end of the crankshaft.

So there you have it – if you’re the ownerof a 1997 – 2005Boxster or a 1999 - early2005 911, you can consider yourself in-formed.

And I can finally get a good night’s sleep.
