I can’t believe it’sthe end ofSeptember already& it is officiallyFall here inNorthwest Ohio. Itseems likeyesterday that Iwas composing lastmonth’s column.

Soon it will be time to start thinkingabout getting the garage cleaned out,the fluids changed & thewinterization that goes along withputting our cars away for season.Hopefully we still have time to drivethese pieces of machinery before theweather turns sour. I know that Iwould love to get the GT3 out forsome exercising. I can’t believe thatI’ve had the car since last April 2015& she just turned 1100 miles on theodometer. The good part is that therehave been plenty of opportunities forinstructing at DE events this pastseason. I still have one at Mid-OhioRace Course and one at VIR in lateOctober to round out the season.

Sarah & I just got back last weekfrom a “bucket list” vacation thatinvolved spending time in Madridvisiting some incredible architecture. We then hopped on the high speedbullet train to Barcelona. That wasvery cool to see the speed in each caras we edged closer to the 200mph

mark. We spent quite a bit of timevisiting various museums includingthe Spanish Naval Museum and theGaudi Museum. The Naval Museumwas absolutely incredible with theamount of history, artifacts andinformation that we learned aboutthe Spanish Navy Armada. Weespecially liked the Gaudi CathedralAKA Sagrada Familia. Thiscathedral has been under steadyconstruction since 1882. Theprojection is that it will be completedin 2030. Nothing like fast tracking aproject. Lastly, we got on a cruise inBarcelona which visited France &Italy. Both Sarah & I agreed that ourfavorite destination was visiting theAmalfi coastline, although I couldhave done without the hair raisingbus ride where we were merely inchesaway from certain death on themountain! No wonder Italy producesfearless race car drivers.

I would be remiss if I didn’t mentionthat we have some neat upcomingclub events including a driving tour/dinner down in Findlay on October22. Jeff Fort will lead the group onthe driving tour which culminates atthe Pits Rod & Gun Club. Pleasecheck the club’s website for moredetails and make to RSVP with KimHarris.

Golf Scrambleby Deb Isley

On Saturday, Sept. 10th, fifteenmembers & friends entered the annualMVR Golf Scramble at the BowlingGreen Country Club (photos courtesy oftheir website). Four teams hit the teesfor a fun challenge of 9-holes. Thestakes were high and long or sometimesa little short that ended up wet. Severalof the holes had these challenges.

We started out with partly sunny buthad a short rain delay by the third hole.A few pins were a jog to the left or rightfrom the tee, but some golfers invokedthe rule that the shortest distancebetween two points was a straight line!Tall trees obstructed the view of theflying ball and we held our breaths notknowing if the ball was in a tree untilwe rounded the jog to see the ball ashort distance from the pin!

The members of the winning team with3 under par were Beth Stewart, MattLeHann, and Ron Gargasz. The otherteams had scores that were even withpar, one over par, and “a few” over parbut, they’ve signed a pact not to divulgewhat “a few” means ;-) .

The winners of the challenges were:

•Ladies second shot closest to the pin– Charlotte Cryan

•Mens closest to the pin – SteveWilliams

•Ladies shortest drive from the tee(and the ball had to leave the tee!) –Deb Isley, I’ve been practicing those“worm burners” all season :-)

•Mens longest drive from the whitetee – Matt LeHann

•For everyone who plunked their ballINTO the quarry (you had to be thereand yes, quite a few of us heard thesplash as the ball missed land; this isthe challenge that was “a little shortthat ended up wet”) the names wentinto a drawing – and the winner wasVictoria Steiner! We’re guessing thatshe opted for the sleeve of golf ballsas her prize!

Dinner was at the club’s grill andeveryone enjoyed the barbequed ribswith potato and slaw sides, bakedbeans, and home-made brownies(Thank you Yvonne for the dessert!).And we shared more golf stories! We’relooking forward to next year’s FUNgolf outing!

Intimidation. That’s what this image isabout; the monster, black and hulking, looming large over the tiny obstructionblocking its path, a scowl on itschromed face. Carnage, it implies, mayensue.

Actually, it was a lot more lightheartedthan all that when I put this imagetogether 30 years ago at the 1986

Porsche Parade. I had about finishedshooting the autocross for Panoramaand saw the possibility of setting thisshot up with the sponsor’s truck and the910 of one of the contestants. Colorfilm would have been too distracting forthis subject, but I had only one last

exposure left in my black and whitecamera. It needed to be done right inone take.

Several conditions were required; thecar needed to be very close to the truck, with a long telephoto to give the sort ofcompression to make them look evencloser together. That required a highnumerical f-stop to produce the desireddepth of field from the 300 mm lens, which meant using a slow shutter speedand a tripod. Since I had no remoteshutter release with me, the mechanicalself-timer on the camera would have tobe used to make the exposure.

The owner of the beautiful little Porsche910, Bill Ferran, positioned his car forme, lining it up perfectly with the big, expensive Ford rig. I had to set up thecamera with the long lens a

considerable distance away to get theentire scene, and stayed with the camerato trigger the self-timer.

All good—until a lady needing to get tothe other side began walking, unawares, straight into my one-chance shot. Toofar away to do anything to stop thedisaster, I watched in frustration as thetimer whirred downward. At the lastmoment, my photographic co-conspirator daughter vectored in on theinnocent interloper, screaming at theconfused and justifiably miffed woman, and saved the shot.

Ferran’s 910 was the fastest car incompetition that day. Thirty years on, itis probably worth a lot more than themenacing and now-old truck, too.

Taken from PCA Tech Q&AEdited and Compiled by Bob Cryan

What Is Best Ride TireQuestion: I currently have 18” Pirelli P Zero tires on my 2004, 911 and am gettingready to replace them. I'm looking for a better riding tire and understand that I willhave to sacrifice some performance. I'm looking for recommendations from fellowPorsche owners who have done the same or similar.

Answer: Submitted by Bill Burris. Ride comfort is a combination of so manyfactors - tires included - but what one person considers sporty and acceptable will beentirely too harsh for others, so with that in mind here's one man's opinion: While Ilike the Pirelli P Zero tire for it's tread pattern and sidewall looks, the tire I gravitateto when I need a change is the Michelin Pilot Sport. There are a number ofiterations of this tire so you might want to experiment, but don't overlook otheroptions from companies like Yokohama and Hankook. Sometimes I end up with aparticular tire because of availability or price, but if you've got a choice try theMichelins for a combination of performance and comfort (and they don't look toobad, either!)

How to Repair Convertible Top Out Of SyncQuestion: The convertible top on my 2000, 911Carrera cabriolet with 54,000 mileskeeps going out of sync when cycled 4-5 times. I can sync it and get it to work butafter 5 times it goes back out of sync and the flap in the back gets stuck partiallyopen. I have had people work on this for hours and no luck. What is the solution?

Answer: Submitted by Bill Burris. I'll bet a nickel there's something bent. Insteadof chasing it, my best recommendation is to take the car to a competent body shop -they deal with broken tops all the time and know where the weak points are. What'sgreat is that your synchronization failure is the same every time, so it shouldn't beparticularly hard to find out why.

My Check Engine Light Came On About 2 Days After Jump Starting My DeadBattery. Is This Common?Question: The battery in my 1999, 911 Carrera died after I left ignition on and Ijumped started car in the morning. I went to work and 2 days later when I was goinghome it started. While then driving the ‘check engine’ light came on. Is thiscommon? Do I need to take in? I checked fuel cap and re-tightened it, but the lightis still on.

Page 19: der RÜCKSPIEGELmm.pca.org/pdf/DerRuckspiegel/SeptOct2016.pdf · 3 September/October 2016 der RÜCKSPIEGEL Published monthly by the Maumee Valley Region, Porsche Club of America.

Answer: Submitted by Bill Burris. Chances are the two circumstances areunrelated; take your Carrera to a qualified Porsche repair facility to have thediagnostic codes read, repair performed if necessary then extinguish the 'checkengine' light.

Looking For Quiet Ceramic Brake Pads...Possible?Question:My 2005, 911 Carrera S with 68,000 miles has original ceramic brakesand they squeak very loudly when they are heated up. My local dealer says that therotors and pads all look good. Is there a quieter Porsche authorized ceramic brakepad available?

Answer: Submitted by Dustin Aydt. Unfortunately race brakes are inherently noisyand that is exactly what PCCBs are. Some PCCB brakes are noisier than others butthey all make much more noise than their steel counterparts. From my experience itseems that street cars with PCCBs stay on the quieter side if they are never broughtto full operating temperature (i.e. track events.) Once the pads/rotors have seenthese temperatures they tend to become noisier while street driving. It has nevercome up so I'm not sure if there are aftermarket PCCB brake pads available butthere are definitely steel brake options. Many of the track guys order their cars withPCCBs to get the larger calipers and then switch the pads and rotors out for steelcomponents that are much more economical to wear out at the track. Perhaps youcan make the same swap with a more street-specific pad to minimize your noiseconcerns.

How Do I Find Out If My 2000 911 Tiptronic Has the Double Or Single IMSBearing?Question: I have tried without success to provide my VIN to Porsche and Porschedealers to determine if my 2000 911 Tiptronic has the single or double bearingconfiguration. It is my understanding that the double bearing is reliable but not thesingle.

Answer: Submitted by Bill Burris. You can check the Eisen IMS Settlement foryour VIN range, but if you own a 2000 Tiptronic it's likely got the single rowbearing (8% failure as estimated by Porsche) vs. the 1% failure expectation of thedouble row bearing. Part of the challenge we have as owners is that Porsche did notkeep engine-by-engine records for which motor got which bearing type, but thesingle row setup was phased in early in the 2000 production year and continuedthrough mid-2005. There is, however, a quick way to know for sure which oneyou've got: Look at it. (that is, next time you've got the engine out of the car andcan separate the engine from the transmission!)

Greetings PCAZone 4 Members,

Amidst the cool crispair and surrounded bythe majestic splendorof the beautifulautumn foliage, itwill soon be time toput our cars into

storage until sunshine and warmertemperatures return next spring. However, that does not mean that therestill aren’t plenty of opportunities to gettogether with your fellow PCAmembers for friendship andcamaraderie.

I recently attended MORPCA’s 50thAnniversary Celebration. On a beautifulautumn Sunday, a large number ofMORPCA members including severalPast Presidents gathered in a hangar atThe Ohio State University Airport. PCANational Past President Manny Albanentertained the crowd with stories andpresented the region with a PCA flagsigned by each member of theExecutive Council. In addition, Ipresented the region with a number ofitems to commemorate the momentousoccasion.

I also attended OVR’s signature event,Rallye Porsche Milford. This year therewas a new venue and an additional dayof activities. The weekend began with adriving tour followed by dinner at a

local restaurant, and included a carshow and a day filled with Porsche fun.Several hundred people were on hand asMilford’s Main Street was closed off toaccommodate the 100 Porsches ondisplay in the picturesque city.

This is an important time of year, and Iam reminding you that you can helpshape and support your region byparticipating in your region’s elections.Furthermore, please considervolunteering and taking part in theupcoming planning meetings. Maybethis will be the year that you lead a tour, organize an event, or host a party. And,of course, with the holidaysapproaching, many regions willcelebrate with their PCA friends byholding festive annual holiday parties. Please remember to check your inboxes, region’s newsletter and website,as well as the Zone 4 website http://zone4.pca.org for the most up to dateinformation about events available toyou.
