Welcome to the Hershey Elementary School which includes the Early Childhood Center, Primary School, and Intermediate School. We are delighted to have you as a member of our school family as we embark on the 2020-2021 school year. This Handbook provides you with some basic information about our programs and philosophy. Our goal is to create a stimulating environment in which all children grow academically, socially, emotionally and physically. We strive to provide opportunities for all students to prosper as 21st Century Learners.

Please review the contents of this handbook with your child and keep it in a location

for easy access throughout the school year. If you have any questions, please direct

them to the building office. Parents are children's first teachers. They have the strongest and most permanent influence on their children's lives. We, therefore, invite all parents to be members of our school family and form positive partnerships that embrace our COCOA Principles and ensure success for all children. We look forward to working with our families as we begin a most important and exciting educational journey. Working for children and families,

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL HOURS

Kindergarten, Grades 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5:

AM Session: 8:40 AM – 11:30 AM

PM Session: 12:45 PM - 3:30 PM

ARRIVAL Students will be assigned to a morning or afternoon session. Students should arrive at school between 8:30-8:40 AM for the AM session, and 12:40-12:50 PM for the PM session. Prior to these times, all doors will be locked as there will not be adult supervision. Students arriving after these times will need to be signed into the office and will be considered tardy.

AM School Day: In Person – Arrival 8:30 AM - 8:40 AM In Person – Instruction 8:40 AM – 11:15 AM In Person – Dismissal 11:15 AM – 11:30 AM Home-Online Instruction 12:30 PM – 3:30 PM

PM School Day: Home-Online Instruction 8:30 AM – 11:30 AM In Person – Arrival 12:40 PM - 12:50 PM In Person – Instruction 12:50 PM – 3:30 PM In Person – Dismissal 3:30 PM – 3:45 PM

Please note: The school start times for the 2021-2022 school year will be changing.

ATTENDANCE

ATTENDANCE The Derry Township School District strongly believes that regular school attendance plays a vital role in ensuring that your child receives a quality education during the school year. Research suggests a positive connection between attendance and academic success. With that being said, a maximum of ten (10) days of cumulative lawful absences verified by parental notification may be permitted during a school year. The Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) recommends that all absences should be treated as unlawful until the District receives a written excuse explaining the reason(s) for an absence. As a result, parents/guardians and students should submit a written explanation within three (3) calendar days of an absence. Failure to provide a written excuse within three (3) days of the absence may result in the absence permanently being counted as unexcused.

NOTIFICATION PROCEDURES 1. Parents/guardians will be notified of their child’s absence on a daily basis via the

District’s phone messaging system. See Absentee Reporting.

2. Parents/guardians will receive a letter via regular mail if their child has reached ten (10) excused absences during the school year. This letter is commonly referred to as a 10-day letter.

3. Parents/guardians will be notified of their child’s unexcused absences as indicated

below:

First Unexcused Absence: A letter will be sent to parent/guardians notifying them of the unexcused absence from school via regular mail. Legal penalties established by law for violation of compulsory attendance will be included.

Second Unexcused Absence: A letter will be sent to parent/guardians notifying them of the second unexcused absence from school via regular mail. Legal penalties established by law for violation of compulsory attendance will be included.

Third Unexcused Absence: A letter will be sent to parent/guardians notifying them of the third unexcused absence from school through certified mail. In addition, parents/guardians will be informed that according to PDE, a joint conference will be scheduled to develop a School Attendance Improvement Plan (SAIP). Furthermore, parents/guardians will be advised that they will be liable without further notice. Legal penalties established by law for violation of compulsory attendance will be included.

Additional Unexcused Absence(s): A citation may be sent to the magisterial district judge. An official notice of unexcused absence through certified mail will be mailed to parent/guardians.

ABSENCE DEFINITIONS There are three types of absences:

Exempt – Absences that are accompanied by the proper documentation within three (3) school days from the students return to school. These absences are considered excused absences, but are not counted towards the maximum of ten (10) lawful absences as noted above.

Non-exempt – Absences that are accompanied with a note from a parent or guardian within three (3) school days from the students return to school. These absences are considered excused absences, but are counted towards the maximum of ten (10) lawful absences as noted above.

Unexcused – Absences that are not accompanied by a written explanation within three (3) school days from the students return to school, or, absences that are

ABSENTEE REPORTING

1. When a child is absent from school, the parents/guardians are required to call the

number listed above on the morning of the absence and report the student’s first and last name, grade and homeroom teacher's name. Include a short message concerning the reason for the student's absence or tardiness. To report your child’s absence, please call the absentee hotline at 533-1815, do not call the main office.

For students in kindergarten and first grade, push 1.

For students in second and third grades, push 2.

For students in fourth and fifth grades, push 3. 2. To ensure student welfare, parents must call in by 8:40 a.m. the start of the school

day. 3. Parents that did not call in to report an absence will receive a phone call to confirm the

three (3) days after an absence or does not meet the conditions or situations to constitute reasonable cause for absence from school, the absence will be marked unexcused/unlawful and reported as such on the report cards. Families who have students who are enrolled in online classrooms can email their written excuse to the building secretary.

5. Parents may request homework if their child is absent from school by calling the office. 6. Examples of illnesses and conditions that indicate exclusion from school and require a

“Certificate of Recovery” from a physician for re-admittance to school may include measles, whooping cough, scarlet fever, conjunctivitis (Pink Eye), impetigo, respiratory streptococcal infection, scabies, ringworm, and tonsillitis. Examples of illnesses and conditions requiring exclusion from school for a specific period of isolation may include mumps, chickenpox, and head lice.

7. A doctor’s note may be required for any absence of three (3) or more consecutive days.

8. School-sponsored activities (i.e. field trips, band or play rehearsals, student council activities, athletic contests) in which the student is a participant are not considered absences.

UNEXCUSED ABSENCES 1. Absences of a student without the knowledge of his or her parents/guardians are

considered unexcused. 2. Absences of a student without acceptable cause with the knowledge of his or her

parent are considered unexcused. 3. After three (3) unexcused absences, the student’s parents/guardians will receive a

letter notifying the parents of their violation of Pennsylvania’s compulsory attendance laws.

EXCESSIVE ABSENCES or TARDIES 1. Students accumulating ten (10) or more absences from school may be required to

provide a medical excuse from a physician for subsequent absences in accordance with school policy. Absences requiring a physician’s excuse will be recorded as unexcused if one is not provided.

2. When tardy hours accumulate to equal the equivalent of one school day (6 hours), they will be counted towards one (1) excused or unexcused absence on the student attendance record.

LATE ARRIVING STUDENTS 1. If a student comes in to school after 12:20 p.m. they are marked absent for the whole

day. No half day credit is given. 2. If the student leaves school between 8:40 and 12:00 noon and does not return the

student is marked absent and no half day credit is given. 3. If a student leaves for an appointment then comes back, the student is not marked

absent unless the student is gone for more than 3 hours.

4. A late arriving student should report directly to the school office to present a note explaining his or her lateness and obtain a permission slip to gain admittance to class. If a student does not have a valid excuse (examples: oversleeping, car trouble, and

missed bus are not valid excuses) for his or her lateness, it will be declared unexcused.

DISMISSAL FROM SCHOOL (Appointments and Illness) 1. If your child needs to be dismissed from school early because of an appointment, a

written request from the parent/guardian is required and should be given to the child’s homeroom teacher.

2. If an appointment is made after the child is in school, please notify the office regarding dismissal plans.

3. Due to the age factor of our elementary students, students will not be called to the office or dismissed by classroom teacher until parent/guardian has arrived in the office and signed the student out.

4. Students will only be released from school to authorized persons as designated on emergency contact list.

5. Students are expected to return to school from their appointment with a signed official appointment slip from the doctor/dentist/counselor.

6. When early dismissal hours accumulate to equal the equivalent of one (1) school day (6.5 hours) that time will be counted towards one (1) excused or unexcused absence on the student’s attendance record.

PRE-APPROVED EDUCATIONAL TRIPS 1. Prior permission for educational trips for family trips, funerals, etc. must be obtained by

submitting a “Student Application for Educational Trip or Tour Requested by Parents”

form to the student’s principal. Please submit form within two weeks of trip

departure, as per Board policy 204.1. (An example copy of the form is on next page.) Forms can be found in each building’s office.

BUILDING ADVISORY TEAM (BAT) The Elementary School has a Building Advisory Team (BAT) which meets monthly to provide an opportunity for principals to highlight specific events and activities of the building.

It is also an avenue for parents to share ideas and/or concerns. All parents are invited to

attend. They are held on the second Thursday each month, prior to the PTO meeting, at 9:00 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. in Room 6 in the Elementary building. See district calendar on the district website.

BULLYING PREVENTION

As a part of our safe schools efforts, we are committed to providing an environment where

students feel safe and secure. Therefore, bullying behavior is not acceptable in Derry

Township schools. Below are definitions of what constitutes bullying as well as additional

information.

If a student is experiencing bullying at school, please contact the teacher, school

counselor, and/or building administrator to report the concern immediately.

Bullying: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention established a uniform definition

to clearly distinguish bullying behaviors from conflict, harassment and other forms of

aggression among youth. Specifically, bullying is defined as any unwanted aggressive

behavior(s) by another youth or group of youths who are not siblings or current dating

partners that involves an observed or perceived power imbalance and is repeated multiple

times or is highly likely to be repeated. Bullying may inflict harm or distress on the targeted

youth including physical, psychological, social, or educational harm.

Bullying shall mean an intentional electronic, written, verbal or physical act, or a series of

acts that:

Occurs in a school setting. “School setting” shall mean in the school, on school

setting grounds, in school vehicles, at a designated bus stop or at any activity

sponsored, supervised or sanctioned by the school”

Is severe, persistent or pervasive

Is directed at another student or students

Has the effect of doing any of the following:

o Substantially interferes with a student's education

o Creates a threatening environment

o Substantially disrupts the orderly operation of the school

A school entity is not prohibited from defining bullying in such a way as to encompass

acts that occur outside a school setting, if those acts are

o Severe, persistent or pervasive

Bullying can be direct or indirect and it can be either physical and/or psychological in

nature

Bullying can be categorized in the following types if the criteria noted above is met.

An accidental action or one-time incident without meeting the criteria does not

constitute bullying.

DIRECT BULLYING: A negative action when somebody hits, pushes, kicks, pinches, or

restrains another by physical contact. Direct bullying can also be carried out by words

(verbally), by threatening, taunting, teasing, and calling names.

INDIRECT BULLYING: Making faces or gestures, intentionally excluding someone from a

group, spreading rumors, or refusing to comply with another person’s wishes.

RELATIONAL AGGRESSION: Bullying that affects a student’s social standing or status is a

form of relational aggression. It can take many forms, including shunning, hazing, spreading

rumors, excluding others or teasing.

CYBERBULLYING: Bullying that takes place over digital devices like cell phones,

computers, and tablets. Cyberbullying can occur through email, SMS, text, and apps, or

online in social media, forums, or gaming where people can view, participate in, or share

content. Cyberbullying includes sending, posting, or sharing negative, harmful, false, or

mean content about someone else. It can include sharing personal or private information

about someone else causing embarrassment or humiliation. Some cyberbullying crosses

the line into unlawful or criminal behavior.

Bullying/Cyberbullying Policy: In 2008, the Public School Code of 1949 was amended

(24 PS 13-1303.1-A) and requires schools to develop a policy relating to bullying. Derry

Township School District’s Bullying/Cyberbullying Policy #249 can be found on the District

within ninety (90) days after their adoption and thereafter at least once each school

Cyber Harassment of Children: On July 10, 2015, Governor Wolf signed PA House Bill

229 into law. HB 229 is now Act 26 of 2015. Act 26 amends Title 18 (Crimes and Offenses)

of the Pennsylvania Consolidated Statutes, in assault, further providing for the offense of

harassment.

Act 26: 1. Defines cyber harassment of a child and makes it a crime.

2. Explains what occurs if a juvenile is charged with this offense.

3. Defines the following: emotional distress, repeatedly communicates and seriously

disparaging statement.

4. Becomes effective September 8, 2015.

Bullying Prevention Consultation Line: The Pennsylvania Department of Education’s

Office for Safe Schools has implemented the PA Bullying Prevention Consultation Line. The

Bullying Prevention Consultation Line is a toll-free number to allow individuals experiencing

chronic and unresolved bullying to discuss effective strategies and available resources to

deal with school-based bullying. This supportive resource has been developed in

collaboration with the Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention (CHPDP), and is

available at no cost to students, parents/guardians, and school districts across the state.

Users can leave a message 24 hour a day, seven days a week, and will be returned

Monday-Friday during normal business hours. The Consultation Line number is 1-866-716-

0424.

CELEBRATIONS Each class may have a maximum of four celebrations throughout the school year: Celebration dates and times will be determined by each grade level. Some grades may have additional events tied in with their curriculum and/or classroom management system. While others such as in the upper grades the frequency may be less. These events should be on a smaller scale. The celebrations will generally involve food, a structured craft/activity and/or games. The timing of the celebration will be determined by the teacher but generally

not exceed 60 minutes. Teachers may request that younger siblings not attend

classroom celebrations. All precautions should be taken to avoid religious or cultural themes for parties. It is not permissible to ask for cash donations for food or other party items. Donations of food, beverage, craft items, trinkets and paper goods may be

requested. In celebration of student birthdays non-edible items such as stickers,

pens, pencils, or books may be shared with classmates. If you wish to celebrate your child’s birthday with an edible treat, this can be done by contacting their teacher before one of the four-scheduled classroom celebration days. If you decide you want to serve as a volunteer, please follow the necessary steps outlined on

the district website for volunteers. All volunteers must have clearances to attend class/grade

celebrations.

COVID BUILDING PROCEDURES and INFORMATION

Building Procedures:

● Breakfast/Lunch

○ Breakfast/Lunch: Breakfast/Lunch will be pre-ordered and will be delivered to

the classroom prior to arrival. Students eat in the classroom, seated at desks

and utilizing a desk shield.

○ Allergy Aware: Allergy aware classrooms will utilize trays while eating at their

desks in the classroom. All students will wash hands with soap and water

after lunchtime.

● Handwashing

○ Students and staff will wash and/or sanitize their hands before leaving and

after entering the classroom. Hand sanitizer will be available in each

classroom. Allergy classrooms will follow all handwashing procedures.

● Classroom Materials

○ All students should have their own materials that are used frequently.

(scissors, glue, crayons, pencils,headphones/earbuds, etc.) The sharing of

student materials should be discouraged as much as possible. Classroom

materials that are shared should be cleaned by the teacher in between uses

● Masks

○ All students and staff are required to wear masks. Mask breaks will be

schedule through the day.

● Water Fountains

○ Water fountains will not be utilized, but bottle fillers have been installed on

several water fountains in the ECC/Elem. Students should bring water bottles.

Students without water bottles may be provided a cup.

Face Coverings: In accordance with the Secretary of the PA Department of Health, Universal Face Coverings order effective July 1, 2020, all persons over the age of two are required to wear face covering in public places*. This order applies to all students, staff and visitors while in school entities unless:

Eating or drinking when spaced at least 6 feet apart; or When wearing a face covering creates an unsafe condition in which to operate

equipment or execute a task; or At least 6 feet apart during “face-covering breaks” to last no longer than 10 minutes.

In response to this order, The Derry Township School District requires all persons over the age of two to wear a “face covering” which the District defines as cloth facemask or face shields (based on individualized student need as addressed through the Section 504 or IDEA process) to assist in preventing spread of the coronavirus. Face coverings must be worn at all times while on campus, absent one of the exceptions provided for above, until the Pennsylvania Secretary of Health determines the public health risk is sufficiently reduced so that face coverings are no longer necessary as a widely utilized public health tool. Students who refuse to wear a face covering may be subject to discipline relative to insubordinate behavior and/or other applicable infractions as outlined in the student handbook and pursuant to Board policy. * Children two years and older are required to wear a face covering unless they have a medical or mental health condition or disability, documented in accordance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act or IDEA, that precludes the wearing of a face covering in school. Accommodations for such students should be made in partnership with the student’s health care provider, school nurse, and IEP/504 team.

Grading/Feedback Seesaw will be utilized as the common learning platform and communication tool both the in person and online environments. Students will complete assignments both in person and online, and will receive feedback on assignments completed in person or online asynchronous follow up activities. Student progress on DTSD grade level content standards and skills will be reported on the trimester report cards. End of trimester report card data will be collected based on student participation and performance in in person instruction and online synchronous and asynchronous instruction. Report cards are accessed through the DTSD Home Access Center.

Online Learning Model 2020-2021 Hershey Elementary will implement a blended model of asynchronous and synchronous online instruction. Our learning platform in Hershey Elementary School is SeeSaw.

● Asynchronous instruction refers to self-paced instruction where students engage in

the learning materials on their own time, interacting intermittently with the teacher via

the computer or other electronic devices.

● Synchronous instruction is similar to on-campus learning. It is two-way, real-time,

live instruction between students and teachers through the computer or other

electronic devices.

Parent/Student Support - Getting Started/Onboarding ● Families will be provided with a virtual and/or live onboarding session

Instructional Schedule Students in the online classroom will have schedules provided that match or exceed the following daily minimum across all grade levels. The daily instructional time at Hershey Elementary School is 5 hours and 35 minutes per day. Class schedules may utilize large group and small group instructional opportunities. Online instruction will cover the Derry Township School District curriculum standards. Live instruction will happen between the hours of 8:40-3:30. Below is a sample schedule. A more specific and detailed schedule will be provided by the online teacher and will be specific to each grade level.

School closure due to COVID In the event that school would be closed due to COVID reasons, online model students would continue to follow their regular schedule. Students who are enrolled in the hybrid model, would continue their schedules from home with synchronous learning sessions with their teacher during their typical scheduled “in person” time. These synchronous sessions will range from 20-30 minutes, with follow up asynchronous activities.

Hybrid AM Schedule students o Live Synchronous Lessons (Morning Meeting, Math, ELA) will happen

between the hours of 9am-11:15am o Asynchronous activities and learning 11:15am-3:30pm (**for students already

DRESS CODE The students of the Derry Township School District are expected to be aware of the importance of dressing appropriately and are urged to accept their responsibility to be well groomed and neat. Students are expected to wear appropriate clothing and footwear that will be comfortable and, at the same time, be considered in good taste by the school population and its frequent visitors (this includes gym class attire as well). Judgment of this shall be at the discretion of school administration. Exceptions to the dress code can be made for safety, religious or medical reasons or on “special event” days or for students involved in school related organizations (athletics, band, cheerleading, etc).

The administration reserves the right to remove a student from the school setting in the event that attire is deemed inappropriate, poses a concern for the health, safety or welfare of any student including himself/herself or is disruptive to the normal functions of the school. Examples of inappropriate attire for all students K-12 includes (but is not limited to):

Any clothing or accessory (including chains, spikes, jewelry, shoes, etc.) that propose safety hazards or could cause possible disruptions in the normal functions of the school.

Any clothing or accessory that depicts slogans or pictures that suggest the use of drugs, alcohol, tobacco, weapons, violence, or that involves sexual connotations, or are degrading to any group on the basis of race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, etc.

Halter tops, tube tops, tank tops, muscle shirts, dresses, or other tops with narrow shoulder straps (shoulder straps should be at least three fingers in width.

Shirts or dresses that reveal one’s chest, back or midriff.

Short skirts, dresses or shorts (Students in grades 6-12 may only wear shorts, skirts, and dresses that fall closer to the knee than mid thigh).

Pants, shorts, skirts or dresses with holes or that show skin or undergarments.

Low cut pants that expose undergarments and midriffs (Students are expected to wear their pants so the belt loops or waist are at or close to the waistline. Sagging is prohibited.)

Hats, hoods, bandannas, visors, or other head covering.

Sunglasses.

Coats. (Coats must be put in students' lockers or classroom. Sweatshirts or sweaters may be worn in their place.)

FIELD TRIPS Parents will be required to sign a Field Trip Permission Form when students are involved in special activities that are off the school grounds. These forms must be returned to school

prior to the trip. Children who do not have written permission from parents WILL NOT be allowed to go on the field trip. Due to liability, younger or older siblings may not attend.

Our Time to Shine Breakfast Program at the ECC and Elementary School provides

students with more time to fuel up on a nutritious breakfast so they can shine all day.

We have developed this program as a quick, convenient option for both parents and

students. For only $2.25 per day, your child can choose from a selection of breakfast

items that not only meet USDA’s nutritional standards but also give your child the

fuel they need to shine all day! Our breakfast is served in the ECC and Elementary

school cafeterias daily from 8:30 AM until 8:50 AM.

Outside visitors are not permitted during lunchtime.

BREAKFAST / LUNCH Students in the hybrid program will have the opportunity to purchase a breakfast and lunch daily from the food services department. As a result of the district’s Covid mitigation efforts and our hybrid AM/PM instructional model we will not be serving traditional lunches to students this year. However, we understand the importance of a nutritious breakfast and lunch, and as such, we will provide the opportunity

for families to order bagged lunch/breakfast meals daily to be consumed in the classroom or for students to take home as needed. We anticipate that most AM students will eat lunch after arriving home, and most PM students will eat lunch before coming to school, but we will maintain the option for students who need it to have lunch at school. Families who would prefer to have their AM student eat a school breakfast or their PM student have a school lunch will select that option via a form from their teacher during the first week of school. Additionally, AM families can opt for students to take home a lunch to eat later in the day, and PM families can choose for their student to take breakfast home to eat the following day. All meals being eaten during the school day will be distributed to students in their classrooms and consumed behind shields at their desks. D.T.S.D. Food Services has set its goals to provide a variety of meal selections that are both healthy and appealing to our varied customers. FOOD SERVICE STUDENT ACCOUNT INFORMATION If you are a parent of a new student or have deposited funds on your child’s food service account in the past, please take a few moments to familiarize yourself with how to add funds to your child’s account. Some essential items you do need to know are as follows:

o We still accept cash or checks but would prefer the use of the debit system where parents deposit funds onto their child’s account.

o Students access their accounts by entering their student ID # or if enrolled in our biometric system all they need to do is scan their index finger.

To deposit money into your child's account, simply fill out a deposit slip and mail it to the DTSD Food Services Department, P.O. Box 898, Hershey, PA, 17033. To ensure proper credit, include your child's student I.D. number on your check and deposit slip if used. Please note deposit slips

can be found on the district’s website at www.hershey.k12.pa.us. Make checks payable to DTSD

HEALTH and WELLNESS of STUDENTS

Parents have the primary responsibility for the health of their children including the establishment of good personal health habits. Parents should see that their children get sufficient rest, attend to personal cleanliness and eat wholesome food to ensure regular attendance at school. Inform your child's teacher and the school nurse of any health condition that might affect your child's school work.

Treatment of injuries or illnesses occurring at home is not the responsibility of the teacher or school nurse.

PLEASE DO NOT SEND A CHILD TO SCHOOL IF HE/SHE IS ILL.

Prescriptive and/or Over-The-Counter Medications

Any student in need of taking medication (prescriptive and/or over-the-counter)

during school hours must provide ALL of the following:

1. A licensed prescriber’s written instructions for each medication to be administered. This should include name of child, date of prescription, name of medication, dosage and route of administration, specific time or special circumstances which the medication shall be administered, and signature of the prescriber. Written orders may be faxed to the Hershey Elementary School (fax# 717-508-2266) or Hershey ECC School (fax # 717-531-2351).

2. All prescription medicine must be in the original container and labeled with: the child's name, medication name, dosage, time and route of administration. Ask the pharmacist for a "school bottle" with a complete label and the amount of medication that will be needed at school. Over-the-counter medication must be in the original, unopened bottle with a readable label.

3. The child's parent/guardian must request in writing that the school district comply with the written medication order. A medication card will be sent home with the student and must be signed by the child's parent/guardian and returned to the school nurse the following day. No emails will be accepted as permission. The school nurse will refuse to administer a medication if ALL of the above criteria are not met. Medications prescribed daily, twice a day or three times a day should be taken at home (i.e. antibiotics).

4. DTSD and the school health personnel cannot be responsible for the transportation of medication to/from school. A responsible adult shall deliver the medication to the appropriate health office. However, if this is not feasible, the parent must notify the school nurse prior to the child arriving at school. The nurse must be notified of the type, dose, and number of pills that will be brought to school by the student that morning. Immediately upon arrival to school, all medication must be brought by the student to the school nurse. A verification of the medication and count will be completed and documented at that time. The parent will be notified if there is a discrepancy in the medication and/or count.

5. NO prescriptive or over-the-counter medication may be in the child’s possession. The nurse

will evaluate requests for exceptions to this policy based upon medical need, receipt of supporting written orders and documentation of student’s correct procedure/technique by the student’s licensed prescriber, and receipt of written parent permission. Examples of exceptions could include inhaler/diskus, epinephrine auto-injector, and diabetic insulin pump. Specific plans may be developed considering individual student health needs and school integration and implementation. Violations will be addressed under the Drug and Alcohol Policy.

6. All medications shall be administered by the school nurse, another appropriately delegated,

licensed individual, or by the parent. The only exception would be an epinephrine auto-injector which may be administered by a non-licensed individual.

7. Acetaminophen (Tylenol), emergency medications and specified over-the-counter

medications may be administered according to the current standing orders of the school physician if the parent’s written permission for the current year is on file.

8. Cough drops may be used by a student in school with written parental permission.

9. Parents may personally come to the school health office and administer a medication dose

to their child.

10. All medication orders expire at the end of the school year. Parents are asked to pick-up medication at the end of the school year. Medications not picked up within one day of the end of the school year will be discarded and documented.

11. Students may keep non-aerosol topical sunscreen at school and self-apply as needed with written parent permission. If you have any questions or concerns please contact the Elementary School Nurse’s Office 717-508-2287 or the ECC Nurse’s Office 717-531-2211 (ext.6210).

DISMISSAL DUE TO ILLNESS

A child who becomes ill while attending classes will be sent to the nurse's office. The severity of illness and need to leave school will be assessed by the school nurse. Efforts to contact parents will be made through the use of telephone numbers provided to the District.

Students will be released only to the individuals listed with the District. Please immediately

update home, cell and work telephone numbers and emergency contact information

via the Home Access Center.

Students may NOT call parents to be released as an alternate to seeing the school nurse. In the absence of the nurse, the principal or designee will be responsible for release of the

student. Students who call parents for dismissal may not be given an excused

absence.

PENNSYLVANIA DEPARTMENT of HEALTH REQUIREMENTS Pennsylvania Department of Health regulations require the following immunizations:

Under regulation of the Pennsylvania Department of Health, ALL children entering school are required to provide written proof of having received the following immunizations:

ELEMENTARY:

4 doses of DPT, Td, or DT vaccine (one dose must be after 4th birthday)

4 doses of Polio Vaccine (one dose must be after 4th birthday)

2 doses of Measles, Mumps, and Rubella Vaccine (usually given as MMR),

3 doses of Hepatitis B Vaccine

2 doses of Varicella Vaccine

Varicella (chicken pox) immunity, either from vaccinations, history of disease,

or laboratory testing. If immunization is not medically advisable at this time, a licensed health care provider must sign the medical exemption on the reverse side of the Certificate.

Pennsylvania School Code states that immunization requirements must be met and

submitted to your school by the 5th day of the 2020-2021 school year. If an updated

record is not received, your child will be EXCLUDED from school beginning Tuesday,

September 8, 2020 and until the requirements are completed.

Pennsylvania School Health Laws require the following to be done:

Vision screening - all grade levels

Hearing screenings - Kindergarten, Grades 1, 2, 3, 7 and 11

Physical examinations - upon original entry into schools, Grades 6 and 11.

Dental examinations - upon original entry into schools, Grades 3 and 7.

Parents are urged to have these examinations done by their private physician/dentist because they have the best knowledge of the student's health and may recommend immediate steps for any needed medical/dental care. Examinations done by the private physician/dentist during the previous school year and recorded on the appropriate form will be accepted as the required examination for the upcoming year. Forms can be downloaded from the DTSD website under Services & Supports - Health Services - Health Services forms. Completed forms should be returned to school to the attention of the school nurse. Children not examined by their private physician/dentist in a mandated year can be examined by the school physician/dentist during the school year with parent permission. The school physical exam and dental exams are visual inspections only. No vaccines or treatments will be offered.

School age is the perfect time for children to learn

about healthy food, bodies and activity, as they

become more social and independent. Children of

this age learn quickly and are also influenced by

their friends and popular trends. Children need a

wide variety of foods for a well-balanced diet. The

amount of physical activity they have in a day

should determine how much they need to eat. For

an active child this age, healthy snacks can keep

energy levels high.

Breakfast is important

It is important to encourage breakfast. A good

night’s sleep followed by food in the morning

helps your child to stay engaged and focused at

school. Be a role model and let your child see you

eat breakfast too. A bowl of cereal with milk and

fresh fruit is a great starter for the whole family.

School Lunches

Lunch box suggestions include:

Whole grain breads/crackers with cheese, lean

meat, hummus or peanut butter and salad.

Washed and cut up raw vegetables or fresh

fruits.

Yogurt or tetra pack of low fat milk.

Family mealtimes

For school children, family mealtimes are a chance

to share and talk about the day’s activities and

events. The evening meal together is an important

time to do this.

Children of this age may have swings in appetite

depending on activity levels, so allow them to

choose how much they need to eat while offering a

wide variety of healthy foods. Some children only

eat small amounts at the evening meal, so make

sure that the afternoon snack is nutritious, not just

high in energy. Some suggestions of possible

snacks include: a sandwich with a glass of milk,

cereal and fruit, or a bowl of soup and toast.

Family mealtime suggestions include:

Allow talk and sharing of daytime activities.

Avoid distractions such phones, TV, computers,

etc.

Let your child decide when they are full - don’t

argue about food.

Allow children to help with preparing meals and

food shopping.

Teach some simple nutrition such as ‘milk

keeps your bones strong’.

Drinks - suggestions for parents

Suggestions include:

Children should be encouraged to drink plain

water. Sweet drinks such as sodas or fruit juice

are not part of a healthy diet.

Three servings of dairy foods per day are

needed for calcium. Low fat dairy foods

should be offered. A serving equals a glass of

low fat milk or a cup of yogurt.

Exercise and activity

Physical activity is an important part of good

health. Encourage your child to do 60 minutes of

moderate to vigorous physical activity each day.

Those activities that increase heart rate and

breathing include bike riding, jumping rope,

karate, climbing a tree, playing

basketball/soccer/hockey/tennis, dancing, playing

hopscotch/tag, etc. Some parents may also worry

about their child’s weight - to increase activity try

to:

Limit screen time to no more than 2 hours per

day, including TV, handheld screens, and

computers.

Do something physical and active together, like

taking a brisk walk, going for a bike ride,

kayaking or swimming.

Go to and watch your child’s group activities.

Encourage daily physical activity for the whole

family. Use the car less, take the stairs more,

have dance breaks during TV commercials, etc.

Healthy tips for school aged children

HERSHEY INTERVENTION & PREVENTION PROGRAM

The Hershey Intervention and Prevention Program (HIP) is a

Student Assistance Program for grades K-12 that provides

prevention based activities as well as a systematic means for

identifying and referring students who are experiencing barriers to

learning and school success. Student Assistance Programs are

provided in all schools in PA as part of Chapter 12 Student

Services, Act 211 of 1990, and Act 44 of 2018.

What is HIP? HIP is a program that provides identification, intervention, and referral. HIP is

completely voluntary and provides assistance only with the written permission of the

parent/guardian and the student (over age 14). The team gathers information that focuses

not only on issues or behaviors of concern, but also on strengths, resiliency and protective

factors. The HIP Team gathers observable data to determine what in-school or out of school

resources could be helpful. When the issue lies beyond the scope of the school, the HIP

team will assist the parent and student so they may access services within the community.

SAP team members do not diagnose, treat or refer to treatment; but they may refer a

student to a liaison who may screen or assess for further community based services and

support.

Who is part of the HIP Team? The HIP Team is comprised of a core group of school

personnel who have been trained through a state-endorsed program that focuses on

addressing students' behavior and performance at school and includes a referral process to

help students address barriers to learning and school or life success. Ad-hoc members from

How to tell if your son or daughter is well enough to

go back to school.

Determining if your child is well enough to return to

school can be difficult. If you send them back too

early, you’ll risk not only their health, but also that of

their classmates. Getting them back to school as soon

as possible will mean fewer missed days for them, and

less time away from work for you.

Colds and Coughs

The average elementary student gets 6-8 colds per year and each cold lasts 7-10 days.

There are OTC meds to treat bad nasal congestion, cough, runny nose, etc. so most

children should be able to be in school when they have a cold. Send them to school

with a water bottle to encourage fluid intake.

Proper cough/sneeze hygiene and hand washing will reduce the spread of germs.

Fever

A child should stay home with a 100 degree fever or higher.

Child may return to school when they are fever free for 24 hours.

Strep Throat

If child complains of a persistent sore throat, medical attention may be needed.

After about 24 hours on an antibiotic, the child is no longer considered contagious.

Conjunctivitis (pink eye)

Child must be excluded from school if pink eye is suspected.

Head Lice

Student will be excluded and must return lice free.

Stomachache and/or Headache

Most common complaints in the Nurses’ Office and probably at home. Constipation and

poor sleep habits are often seen with these issues.

the Derry Township Police Department, Dauphin County Juvenile Probation, Keystone

Human Services, and Dauphin County Drug and Alcohol Services attend the meetings,

consult with the team, and/or provide assessment as needed.

Who can make a referral to HIP? The HIP team can accept referrals of students from

parents/guardians, administrators, teachers and school staff, students, other concerned

persons, self-referral, or the referral source can remain anonymous.

What information is collected? Observable data is gathered from the students’ teachers,

the attendance officer, the discipline officer, the nurse, the school counselor, and the

parents. A team member(s) then meets with the student. The team and/or ad-hoc members

will then refer the student to the appropriate school or community resources. Confidentiality

between the student, the HIP team, and the parents/guardians will be respected and

maintained according to the guidelines as set by the Protection of Pupil Rights and the

Family Education Rights and Privacy Act.

Where can you go for help? You can make a referral to any member of the Hershey

Intervention and Prevention Program Team, school administrator, school counselor, school

nurse, or any school staff member. Referral forms can be found in the offices of the school

counselor and nurse or on the District website.

PARENT DROP OFF / PICK UP

PARKING LOT PROCEDURES - Elementary School Safety is a priority at all times. When driving students to and from school, please be mindful of safety for all children and adults. Due to the volume of parent vehicles, pickup and drop off may be delayed. Please plan accordingly to allow your child to be in the building on time, and show patience and respect to staff members supporting arrival and dismissal.

There is NO PARKING along any curbed area in the front or on the side of the building during the school day.

When pulling into the front parking lot during dismissal, the curb lane and the “center” lane

are moving traffic lanes. You may not get out of your vehicle for any reason. Students will wait on the brick areas in front of the elementary building and in the ECC lobby during dismissal. Staff members will bring your student to your vehicle.

group) will need to be signed into the office by the adult.

ECC Front and Elementary Side - Curbside pick up ONLY. Please stay in

the vehicle, display your pick-up dismissal tag, and pull forward to the pick-up

location. Staff members will bring your child to your vehicle. Parents are not

permitted to park their cars and pick up students on the sidewalks/front of the

building.

Dismissal Notes: Please discuss end of school day dismissal plans and pick up locations with your child before coming to school each day. Students must have a written note, (please utilize enclosed “Student Dismissal Note”). Notes are to be turned in to the office and homeroom teacher with any dismissal changes. All changes in dismissal made during the school day need to be communicated to the school office by 3PM. Dismissal changes made after 3pm may not be able to be changed.

**Students who will be a “Parent Pick Up” will need a “Student Dismissal Note”

stating WHO will be picking them up and to check “✓” the PICK-UP LOCATION

(ECC front or Elementary side). Staff members will confirm any adult who is picking

up the student prior to allowing the student to enter the vehicle or leave with them by

verifying their pick-up/dismissal car tag. A “Student Dismissal Note” should be given

to your child’s classroom teacher first thing upon the student’s arrival to the room.

Students who are walkers will leave the building to walk home. If a parent is meeting a walker to walk with them, please meet them at one of the walker meeting locations noted on the map.

Bus Transportation: We encourage all students who are eligible for school transportation

services to utilize this service during the school year. If you have any questions concerning

transportation, please call Mr. Steve Bell, Transportation Director, at 566-7422.

RELEASE OF CHILDREN TO A THIRD PARTY

The school will release a child to a third party only if that person is named in writing

by the child's custodial parent or guardian. The designated person must be named

specifically as a person authorized as an emergency contact on the Emergency Card,

or we must have a dated note from the parent asking us to release the child to this

person. STUDENTS MAY NOT BE RELEASED FROM THE

PARENT REQUEST FOR CLASS ASSIGNMENT The placement team, which includes the principal, assistant principal, school counselor, and instructional coaches at each school is responsible for assigning each child to an appropriate teacher. When making this assignment the team must take many factors into consideration. Examples of these factors include the following:

o Total number of students per class. o Balance of girls and boys within a class. o Balance of student learning styles. o Balance of students with special needs. o Recommendations from the Instructional Support/Data Team. o Recommendations to separate some students from others. o Recommendations to keep some students in the same class. o Recommendations from last year’s teacher(s).

Many times one or more of these factors may be in conflict with a parental request. The combination of factors involved makes the creation of a class list a complicated process.

Please use the form provided to communicate your request. If the form is received by April

30, 2021, and if it does not conflict with other factors, the principal will make a reasonable effort to accommodate a parental request. Parents will be notified in writing of room assignments the second week in August prior to each new school year.

PARENT / TEACHER COMMUNICATION

Communication between parents and teachers is an integral part of a child's education. A strong positive connection between home and school emphasizes the importance of education to the child. This communication can take the form of calendars, newsletters, phone calls, emails, visits to school, report cards and conferences, and teacher websites.

Elementary staff will utilize SeeSaw and district email as the main communication

tool with families.

PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCES

Formal Parent-Teacher Conferences are scheduled two times per year (first and second

trimesters). The classroom teacher will provide parents with a convenient schedule. Additional conferences can be scheduled as needed.

PENNSYLVANIA SCHOOL STATE ASSESSMENTS TESTING

The PA Assessments for English Language Arts (ELA) and mathematics will be given to students in grades 3, 4, and 5 during the spring. The PA

Assessment for science will be given to students in grade 4 during the spring. More specific information will be shared in a separate communication.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION EXCUSES

If an injury or illness necessitates an extended absence from physical education a physician's written excuse is required stating the reason and duration of excuse. Students with minor ailments may be excused from gym up to 3 individual days per school year with a

parent note. Please note that a parent excuse from gym will warrant an excuse from

recess as well.

PARENT TEACHER ORGANIZATION (PTO) The purpose of our Hershey Elementary School Parent Teacher Organization is to assist the students and the teachers of HES by providing support for their educational and social activities and to provide open communication between the administration, teachers and parents. All parents and guardians of students who currently attend HES and all current faculty and staff of HES are eligible for membership in the PTO. PTO meets the second Thursday of every month at 9:30 a.m to 10:30 a.m. in the elementary building room 6 (across from the elementary main office).

POSITIVE SCHOOLWIDE BEHAVIOR The Conduct Code of Hershey Elementary School is based on the C.O.C.O.A. Principles that will be taught and reinforced in a developmentally appropriate manner. Elementary students need to learn what is expected and unexpected in their school environment. Community – Our school will at all times strive to create an environment that is safe and conducive to learning for all in our building community. Opportunity – Students have many opportunities to make decisions throughout the day. When a poor decision is made, students have the opportunity to make corrections and amends for their actions. Citizenship – Showing continuous respect for one’s self and for others and our school building to reflect the qualities of good citizenship. Ownership – All in our building community take responsibility for actions and their decisions throughout the day. Academics – Remembering that Discipline means “to teach.” Mistakes are an opportunity to learn, adjust, and try again as students learn to become self-disciplined and self-directed in their behavior choices and actions. In order to continually build a community of civility that embraces these principles Hershey Elementary uses a Positive Schoolwide Behavior Approach. Most unexpected behaviors are to be handled by their classroom teacher in a way for students to learn from their mistakes. Low level offenses require the staff member to contact a parent/guardian prior to referral to an administrator.

RECESS Recess is a vital part of the school day. Children need the physical activity and the change in tempo that these breaks in the school day provide. On the playground, the children learn to abide by the rules and to practice good sportsmanship. Children

develop a feeling of group responsibility as they play during recesses. Wearing appropriate footwear will ensure your child’s safety.

When weather is inclement, a decision will be made to determine whether the children stay inside or go outside.

During the times of extended cold weather, parents are asked to dress their children warmly for outside play. When the temperature or wind chill is below 15 degrees, a decision for indoor/outside recess will come from the office. The decision will be

based on the sun's warmth and the wind chill factor. Visitors are not permitted on the playgrounds during school hours without prior permission from the building principal. Any unauthorized adults or children will be asked to leave by school personnel.

Please note that an excuse from Physical Education will warrant an excuse from recess as well.

REPORT CARDS

One important aspect of communication between school and home is the information provided to parents about their children’s progress. The report card is one tool for informing parents about how their child is progressing in meeting the PA Standards and the specific grade level expectations.

What is a Standards-Based Report Card? A Standards-Based report card allows teachers to identify the specific grade level expectations at each grade level, based on the PA Standards. This type of reporting tool allows teachers to provide to parents and students more specific information as to how a child is performing in relation to those standards and expectations. It allows parents and students to understand more clearly what is expected at each grade level and guides parents in helping their children be successful in a rigorous academic program. Report cards are completed three times a year and are posted online. Two Parent-Teacher

Conferences are scheduled to discuss student progress. See school calendar for

specific dates.

The online version of your student’s report card can be accessed by going to Derry

Township’s Home Access Center (HAC) at www.hershey.k12.pa.us/HAC and logging

in using your personal HAC log-in information given to you at the first trimester

parent/teacher conference. You can also access HAC by going to district homepage,

clicking on the Early Childhood Center, Primary or Intermediate Elementary school,

then under Quick Links click on Home Access Center.

Each parent is given a login and password. Your HAC information will remain the

same for your student until high school graduation so please keep it somewhere safe

as you will need to access it several times each year.

SAFETY There are emergency protective actions that a school district/school can take to protect life and property. Specifically, these include modifying school operating times, such as early dismissal, school closure and school opening delay. Other actions include facility lockdowns, shelter-in-place and evacuations.

EVACUATION: All school district/school personnel, students and visitors exit the building to maintain safety.

Types of Evacuation:

Building: All inhabitants of the building will evacuate quickly and quietly to the nearest accessible exit. Once outside, all individuals will move to the safest area on the far side of the access roads or at a minimum of at least 50 feet away from the building.

Campus: All inhabitants of the buildings on campus may need to be evacuated to another building on campus or off the campus to ensure safety.

Township: All inhabitants of the building will be evacuated to buses for transport to a safe area. In the event of a radiological emergency at Three Mile Island (TMI), students will be transported to Northern Lebanon School District. Please reference the District website for the specific location and address.

REVERSE EVACUATION: All school district/school personnel, students and visitors who are outside will immediately enter the building to maintain safety.

LOCKDOWN: All school district/school personnel, students and visitors remain in locked classrooms/areas until they can safely evacuate or are cleared to resume normal operations.

SHELTER IN PLACE: A process for taking immediate shelter in a location readily accessible to the affected individual(s) by sealing a single area (i.e.: a classroom) from outside contaminants and shutting off all HVAC systems. All school district/school personnel, students and visitors remain in sealed classrooms and areas. This is most often required for a response to an incident related to severe weather or a hazardous material, but can also be in response to an unsafe situation outside of the school building(s). In order to ensure the continuous safety of students and staff all buildings will practice each of these types of Emergency Protective Actions throughout the school year.

ALICE Drill

Students will participate in ALICE drills which will help students to be prepared in the event that a dangerous person would enter the building. Students are taught to stop, look and listen and follow the ALICE plan.

FIRE DRILLS There will be one supervised evacuation every month planned by the building principals. In case of fire, early dismissal procedures may be initiated.

SEVERE WEATHER DRILL Each year the elementary school participates in a drill for severe weather conditions. In case of severe weather, early dismissal procedures may be initiated.

BOMB THREAT In case of a bomb threat, students and staff will evacuate the building using fire drill procedures. Early dismissal procedures may be initiated.

All families are encouraged to develop an emergency family plan for these

circumstances.

SAFE2SAY SOMETHING

All schools in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, including Derry Township School District, have adopted use of the “Safe2Say Something” anonymous tip line as a means of improving campus safety and improving school climate. The program teaches youth and adults how to recognize warning signs and signals, especially within social media, from individuals who may be a threat to themselves or others and to “say something” BEFORE it is too late

The Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General (OAG), in partnership with Sandy Hook Promise (SHP), a leader in anonymous reporting systems, has built out the app, website, and PA-based 24/7 Crisis Center. Tips are reviewed, classified, and forwarded to the appropriate school district.

With Safe2Say Something, it’s an easy and confidential means to report safety concerns to help prevent violence and tragedies. Tips that are found to contain information that may indicate a "life safety" issue are prioritized and immediately forwarded to the appropriate county and township emergency dispatch center and to the school district.

SPECIAL SUBJECTS (SIX DAY CYCLE) Our special subjects (art, music, physical education, computer and library) are scheduled on a six-day rotation. Derry Township School District has been approved as a MTSS (Multi-Tier System of Support) district. Student progress in all areas social, emotional, academic is closely monitored by a highly qualified team of professionals consisting of classroom teacher, psychologist, reading and math specialists, counselors, speech and language, OT/PT, nurse, literacy and math coaches, special education staff, and ELL. All focused on the goal to help ALL students achieve success.

TECHNOLOGY

CARE OF SCHOOL PROPERTY

Derry Township School District believes that schools should help students learn to respect property and develop feelings of pride in community institutions. Each student has the responsibility to properly care for school property, school supplies, and equipment. Parents/guardians may be held accountable for the actions of their child and the district may seek restitution or may take disciplinary actions.

ELECTRONIC DEVICES

Derry Township School District is 1:1 with all students having access to an electronic device for learning. Mobile phones and electronic devices are now an integral part of the daily lives and culture of many of the district’s students. The Board has adopted Policy Number 237 “Electronic Devices” to maintain an educational environment that is safe and secure for its students, while aiming to permit pupils to reasonably and responsibly utilize mobile technology. The purpose of electronic devices in the school setting is to enhance learning opportunities and instruct students in the responsible use of electronic devices. Utilization of video, audio, or camera recordings on school grounds or in school buildings, is strictly forbidden

when not being utilized during instruction or directed use by the teacher. Students are prohibited from any use of electronic devices on the playground or in locker rooms, bathrooms, and other changing areas. Cellular telephones may be used by students with permission from the administration during the school day.

Students are responsible for the proper care of a school issued electronic device. Parents/Guardians may be held responsible for the cost of a replacement device or repair in the event the device is damaged.

TITLE 1

Title I is designed to support State and local school reform efforts tied to challenging Pennsylvania Academic Standards in order to reinforce and amplify efforts to improve teaching and learning for students farthest from meeting the PA standards. Title I funds are used to provide additional academic support and learning

opportunities to help low-achieving children master challenging curricula and meet state standards in mathematics. Students deemed eligible for Title I support will receive additional reading and/or math support during the school day. Parents of targeted students will be notified of the additional support being provided early in the school year and will be invited to attend a special parent program early in the fall of the school year. Parents are an integral component in the effective instruction of children and we look forward to working together to best serve all students. There will be two (2) Parent Nights scheduled throughout the school year.

SCHOOL BUS RULES AND GUIDELINES As the new school year begins, parents of students who ride the school buses are encouraged to review the rules of conduct with their children. Students should be reminded that breaking one or more of these rules could result in suspension of bus riding privileges. All Derry Township School District school buses are equipped with live GPS, 2-way radios, and camer systems which record both video and audio of passengers and students when on the buses.

Any desired changes must be requested and approved through the transportation

department and followed up with an email or written note to the attention of the

administrative assistant in the school office.

1. PRIOR TO LOADING:

a) Students must follow school rules while they wait for the bus.

b) Students should wait for the bus at a safe place, well off the highway, on the side of the street on which they live. Cross the street to enter the bus, if necessary, only when the bus is stopped, the red flashing signals are on and the driver signals it is safe to cross the road.

c) Students must be at the bus stop (5) minutes prior to the time designated and be

ready to board with the least possible delay. Buses will stop only when students

are visible at the designated bus stop.

d) Respect the property rights of people who reside at or near the bus stop.

e) Do not get into private vehicles with strangers. All Derry Township School District vehicles are clearly marked with the designation "Derry Township School District"

f) Students may board only assigned buses and may board only at the bus stop they are assigned.

2. WHILE ON THE BUS: (*) Designates a severe violation

a) Observe regular classroom conduct except for ordinary conversation and follow the bus driver's instructions. The bus driver has the same authority on the bus as a

teacher has in the classroom. *Disrespect of the bus driver will be considered a

severe violation.

b) Loud talking, laughter and other similar conduct diverts the driver's attention and may result in a serious accident.

c) Students may not block aisle or emergency door with musical instruments, lunch boxes, books or other possessions.

d) Students must remain seated while the bus is in motion or if the bus is delayed on the road.

e) Students must not extend arms, head or any other items out of the windows.

f) Students must not damage or tamper with any parts of the bus or use the emergency door except in the case of any emergency.*

g) Horseplay, fighting, vulgarity, profanity, throwing items in the bus or other improper conduct is not permitted.*

h) Students may not eat; drink, smoke, or chew gum while on the bus.

i) The following items are not permitted in any school vehicles: live animals, weapons, drugs, alcohol, tobacco, flammable liquids, fireworks, firecrackers, smoke bombs, tape recorders, walkmans, radios, balls (except for team buses), water pistols, spray bottles, pea shooters, sling shots, glass containers, any objects considered harmful to others or any item too large for students to hold on their laps, including musical instruments.

j) Any conduct that endangers the safety of the other students or driver will be considered severe and could result in immediate loss of bus riding privileges.*

k) Parents are not permitted to board school buses during the regular pick up or drop off process. If a parent/guardian has a concern, they are to contact the Director of Transportation at 566-7422.

l) Phones, iPad and iPod can be used at the drivers’ discretion. Taking picture, videos and device sharing are note permitted. Earbuds or headphones must be worn for audio playing of their devices. Any use of these devices causing any type of a devices causing any type of a distraction will result in loss of privilege.

3. AFTER LEAVING THE BUS:

a) When necessary, cross the road at least 10 feet in front of the bus but only after looking to be sure that no traffic is approaching from either direction and the driver signals it is safe to cross the road.

b) Help look after the safety and comfort of small children.

c) Be alert to the danger signal from the bus driver.

d) Go directly to your school building in the morning and directly home in the afternoon.

e) Any personal items such as a musical instrument, lunch, or backpack left on

the bus will remain on the bus until the afternoon dismissal or next day. A bus

driver may return item to school at his/her discretion that day.

All buses are equipped with audio and video surveillance. By using bus

transportation, or by allowing your child to use bus transportation, you expressly

consent to such surveillance.

BUS CONSEQUENCES: Bus drivers will communicate with Building Administration regarding infractions made on the school bus. Building Administration will determine appropriate consequences that could include: verbal warning, student conference with administrator, parent conference, team meeting with transportation, loss of bus riding privileges.

VISITORS/CAMPUS ACCESS PROCEDURES In an effort to further improve safety and provide a secure learning environment for all, the

Derry Township School District has limited campus access and entry to the main front

door of each building. Parents, visitors, and volunteers will use a video monitor and buzzer system located outside the front entrances.

Upon arrival, individuals should stand in front of the video screen and depress the

button once to request assistance. Individuals wishing to enter the school will be requested to share their name and purpose for the visit. The office staff will then allow access into the building via the buzzer system to unlock the door. All persons are required to make prior arrangements before visiting a teacher or classroom.

To maintain safety, individuals requesting entry should not allow others into the

building without following the procedure.

School Gate Guardian Visitor Registry System

All individuals requesting entry should report directly to the building office to

register via the School Gate Guardian system and obtain a photo visitor badge.

Visitors will be required to provide a driver’s license or other photo

identification to gain entry. The license will be scanned and instantly compares the identity of the visitor with a national database of over 704,000 registered sex offenders.

The photo visitor badge provided must be worn at all times while in the

building or on the campus.

Upon completion of the purpose for visiting, all visitors must exit through the

main office by returning their visitor badge and signing out. This procedure protects the students and staff, but also provides accountability of all individuals in the building should there be an emergency or need to evacuate.

To provide for the safety and security of all students and campus facilities, please note that

unauthorized persons may not traverse the campus during school hours or between

the hours of 10:00 PM through 6:00 AM.

Please remember that the offices are places of business and need to maintain a

conducive working environment. Please limit conversations and cell phone usage

within the office to school business. For the safety of students, staff and visitors please

park in designated areas only (i.e., do not park along curb).
