Integral fans provide 100% combustion air to these nozzle-mixburners. Oil atomizers are of the tip emulsion design, usingsteam or compressed air as the atomizing medium. Oil must bedelivered to the nozzle at viscosities below 100 SSU.
The ruggedly constructed burners consist of three basic sections.
Front Section. A heavy cast iron mounting plate, with slottedmounting holes, fitted with a high strength castable burner tilerated for service up to 2600 F. A carbon steel or 304 stainlesssteel tile support jacket is available as an option.
Center Section. A circular gas plenum with bottom gas inlet, acombustion air diffuser, a connection for a spark-ignited premixgas pilot (for natural gas or propane), and a threaded boss toaccommodate a flame rod.
Rear Section. Hinge-mounted includes blower motor, impeller, intake guard, a large reinforced glass observation port, provisions for mounting a flame detector, the flange-mountedoil atomizer, and the manual or motorized firing rate control. Anaccurate linked valve ratio control is provided by a compactarrangement of linkage rods and swivels that connect the internalmain air proportioning shutters with a butterfly gas valve and/ora Sensitrol Oil Valve. Fuel oil enters the Sensitrol Oil Valve via aswivel type joint mounted on the hinge.
Basic Gas Burner consists of the above three sections fittedwith a manually positioned and lockable firing rate control lever(shown in burner photo) and a butterfly gas valve with linkageassembly. Refer to Bulletin 6140 for main and pilot gasaccessories.
Basic Light Oil Burner consists of the three basic sectionsdescribed above, with the following equipment: a manuallypositioned and lockable firing rate control lever, a Sensitrol OilValve with linkage assembly, and a flange mounted oil atomizerassembly. Refer to Table 2 for oil and atomizing medium pres-sure/flow requirements. Specify this burner arrangement for oilsup to and including #4 grade.
Basic Heavy Oil Burner is similar to the light oil burner exceptatomizer, Sensitrol Oil Valve, and oil piping are sized andarranged to accommodate heavy oil or crude oil. Oil temperatureis maintained electrically within the burner through four lowwattage cartridge heaters: one within Sensitrol valve body, twoin heater blocks attached to oil tube, and one in a heater blockattached to the nozzle. The hinge assembly is fitted with a hotoil return valve (shown in the photograph). This burner isrecommended for all heavy oils, including blended grades.
Basic Dual-Fuel Burner is similar to oil burner except provisionis made for burning either gas or a pre-selected grade of oil. Adual-fuel burner fitted for heavy oil permits use of any grade, ranging from diesel through very heavy #6.
Flame Supervision and Control. There is a long list of optionalaccessories that can be added to the basic burners describedabove. In many applications of this burner, the combustionchamber is below 1400 F. Electronic flame supervisory systemsare strongly recommended. Such systems are offered by NorthAmerican and others. A specially designed system is availablefor boilers.
Your local North American sales engineer can help select burneraccessories required to make a firing system that will be relia-ble, efficient, and safe to operate.

Engineering Specifications 6131
NORTH AMERICAN Mfg. Co. Engineering Specifications 6131, 5-94Cleveland, OH 44105-5600 USA Page 2
The Packaged Automatic Burners are ideal for steel firebox, scotch marine, cast iron sectional, and watertube boilers, and industrial process heating equipment, such as air heaters, dryers, oil heaters, ovens, and incinerators. Six frame sizesproduce a wide range or capacities (2 500 000 to 30 000 000Btu/hr).
Design: The 4131 Burner is for any fuel gas; the 5131 forfuel oils, and the 6131 for dual-fuel (combination gas andoil). All are of the nozzle mix design with an integral blowerto supply 100% combustion air. Oil atomizers are of the tipemulsion design, using steam or compressed air as theatomizing medium. The hinged construction provides quickand complete accessibility. Fixed fuel lines need not bebroken for service because fuel oil enters through the burnerhinge and gas enters through a stationary gas section.
Construction: This rugged burner consists of a cast ironmounting plate, with slotted mounting holes, fitted with a highstrength case refractory burner tile rated for service up to2600 F. A stainless steel tile support jacket is available as anoption. The grade of stainless steel is application dependent. The circular gas plenum has a bottom gas inlet, a combus-tion air diffuser, and a spark-ignited premix gas pilot (fornatural gas or propane).
The hinge-mounted blower section includes the blowermotor, impeller, intake guard (or optional intake silencer), alarge reinforced glass observation port, provisions for mount-ing a flame detector, and flange mounted oil atomizer. Anaccurate linked valve ratio control is provided by a compactarrangement of aircraft-quality linkage rods and swivels thatconnect the internal main air proportioning shutters with abutterfly gas valve and/or a Sensitrol™ oil valve and the modu-lation motor.
Hinged constructionprovides for completeaccessibility toburner internals.
Standard Components: The 4/5/6131 Burner includes thepilot gas regulator, pilot gas solenoid (2nd solenoid optional),6000 volt ignition transformer, electric modulating controlmotor (air motor optional), low combustion air interlock, andburner hinge interlock switch. Oil burners also include asolenoid valve (or optional motorized automatic valve), pipedbetween the hinge and atomizer assembly. All electricalcomponents are wired to the burner mounted NEMA 4junction box.
Turndown: Typical air turndown is 4:1 on standard models.Greater turndown can be achieved with an optional blowerair inlet controller. Consult North American, Cleveland, fordetails.
Excess Air: Standard burner linkage is factory set to deliver20% excess air. Rates greater than 20% are possible throughreduction of fuel input.
Flame Characteristics: These burners generate well-defined medium length flames. See Supplement 6131-1 forflame sizes.
Chamber Pressures: Designed for stable operation inchambers with pressures ranging from –0.5"wc to 2.0"wc.The "N" burner is specified on applications with 0 to –0.5"wcchambers (i.e., 2-pass boilers, dryers, heaters, etc.) and the"P" burner is specified on those with 0.1 to 2.0"wc chambers(i.e., 3-pass boilers, etc.). Consult North American, Cleveland, for burner performance with other pressures.
Underwriters Laboratories Listing: The Model 4/5/6131Burners have been designed in accordance with the require-ments of the Underwriters Laboratories. Consult NorthAmerican Mfg., Cleveland, for labeling service.
WARNING: Situations dangerous to personnel and property can develop from incorrect operation of combustion equipment.North American urges compliance with National Safety Standards and Insurance Underwriters recommendations, and care in operation.
