Harmony Ridge Art Wall September – Mid-October

Yet again during 2021 we are excited to be featuring another Villager for our new exhibit. Artist Debbie McKeen and her husband are residents of Hearthside and this is her first time appearing on our Art Wall. Debbie’s first sign of creative talent, at the age of four, in Baltimore, was a drawing of bright crayon-colored balloons on the family bathroom wall! She had very special parents as they chose not to remove it! Debbie graduated from Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) with a A.B.F.A in Art Education and Fine Arts and went on to teach art to Junior High and High School students. During those years, she also began private instruction to adults in fine arts, quilting and embroidery.

Debbie’s favorite position was at Stony Brook Prep School on Long Island, New York, where art became a window into helping teens from Korea, Japan, Pakistan and Africa work through the complex emotions of inferiority, loneliness and family struggles while so far from home. One especially rewarding experience was with a student who had had no opportunity to study art until her Senior year. She shared her joy at finding her hidden talent and after graduation began a career in one of New York’s museums. Bob, Debbie’s husband, upon retiring found an artistic outlet as well and relishes the challenge of working in stained glass. Debbie considers it a privilege to share her God-given talent and instill the love of art in others. The work Debbie is exhibiting is a departure from the other styles of art we’ve featured in the past. Be sure to allow some extra time to check out the pieces explaining her method and stages of producing a piece. The pieces and the process are both quite fascinating.

Time is Precious Pastor Linda Titzell, Ext. 5580

Director of Pastoral Care Romans 13:11-13a – Besides this, you know what time it is, how it is now the moment for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we became believers; the night is far gone, the day is near. Let us then lay aside the works of darkness and put on the armor of light; let us live honorably as in the day. I was fascinated when I heard the story of

Ruth Belville. She inherited a family business that had been started by her father in 1836 — selling time! In those days in London, anyone who wanted to know the exact time had few options that were accurate enough to make schedules for trains and other time-sensitive endeavors. For more than forty years, Ruth Belville made the early morning journey from the Royal Observatory where Greenwich Mean Time was accurately kept, to as many as 200 clients around the city, using a pocket chronometer nicknamed "Arnold". Subscribers paid for her services even as clocks became more accurate over the years. She gave up her business in 1940 with the war raging. Her "time" ran out three years later at the age of 89. Time really is one of our most costly gifts. We can waste it. We can worry over it. We can kill time. We can spend it on ourselves, but we cannot buy or sell it. As good stewards, we can invest it in a life well-lived for the love of God and others! "You know what time it is, how it is now the moment for you to wake from sleep." You have time the rest of this day and this week and this year to do the works of light — the tasks that God will give you, as God gives you the time to do so. Prayer: Christ, You see who we are. You are familiar with the human condition. We do not want to hide anything in our hearts from You. You know that we are sometimes pulled in different directions at the same time, and yet, we know ourselves to be children of the light. May we use our time this day to discern and do Your will through You, Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Cornhole At Cross Keys Throughout the month of August, five teams of Villagers have enjoyed playing Cornhole outdoors on the shuffle board court. Each team decided whether to continue outdoor play into the fall. Teams play each weekday from 3:00 to 4:00 pm. Cornhole boards and bags are in the area of the shuffle board court for Villagers to use at other times of the day. With the opening of the new Wellness Studio, two Cornhole times have been added to the studio schedule: Tuesdays from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm and Thursdays from 2:00 to 3:00 pm. There are indoor boards and bags in the first closet in the studio. Villagers will need to set up/tear down the Cornhole equipment. See a Wellness team member if you need CKV Cornhole rules. Players who show up for indoor play can line up on the spectator bench, then access a board when it is your turn. Come out for some great fun!

Gettysburg Community Concert

Holly Fetting, Ext. 5544 Director of Life Enrichment

Celebrated for his exuberant virtuosity, and a bold repertoire that embraces piano classics and inspired discoveries of contemporary and world music, Joel Fan re-invents the piano recital by illuminating the rare and unexpected. As a concerto soloist, Fan has performed over 40 different concertos with orchestras worldwide, including the New York Philharmonic, the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, the Odessa Philharmonic, Singapore Symphony, the Boston Pops, and London Sinfonietta, with conductors such as David Zinman, Zubin Mehta, Alan Gilbert, Keith Lockhart, and David Robertson. According to the Boston Music-Intelligencer: “We’ve heard many of the great pianists… Fan belongs in the company of the best.” As a recitalist, Joel Fan has found an enthusiastic following on numerous stages ranging from the Ravinia Festival in Chicago, Jordan Hall in Boston, Calgary Celebrity Series, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC, to the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. Internationally, Fan has performed recitals on four continents – most recently in tours of China, Cuba and South America. Along with his innovative programming, Fan delivers Mozart with “eloquence and sensitivity” (Boston Globe), and brings “a steely power and feather-light touch to Prokofiev…and red-blooded Romantic gestures in Kirchner’s sonata” (New York Times). “He deserves special praise for the spontaneity, wit, and emotional urgency he drew from the music” of Bolcom and Carter (Washington Post). CKV Transportation is being provided however, a volunteer is needed to offer some

assistance with this trip. If you are willing to help, please contact Holly Fetting. Individual tickets to the concert may be purchased at the door on concert night at $20 each.
