By the time you read this magazine, Remembrance Day will be upon us. Even though our days are packed with work and ac-tivities, it’s important to take a moment and remember those who lost their lives in battle. Many of us think of World War I, but it’s important to remember all those who lost their lives in the many wars and battles that have taken place in history. Never forget.

The staff at JGK Media Inc. hope that all of you had a great Halloween. I’m sure that like my kids, some of yours will also be experiencing sugar highs for the next week or so. And with Halloween now behind us, it’s time to look forward to the holiday season. The local shops and malls have already started to set up for Christmas, which isn’t too far away.

For this issue of DRK Magazine, we had the opportunity to review some great luxury vehicles and motorcycles. Zack Spencer, a distinguished Canadian auto journalist and TV host of Driving Television, shares his experiences while behind the wheel of the new Cadillac Escalade in the Toronto area. Read his thoughts on this American luxury SUV. I had the honour of driv-ing two amazing vehicles: the 2014 Bentley Flying Spur and the 2014 BMW 750Li. Yes, we were treated to pure luxury. One of our other reviewers rode the Triumph Trophy SE for a few days.

You may not see many of them, but there are some talented female auto technicians in the Lower Mainland. DRK had the opportunity to have an exclusive interview with Leah Gillanders of Brian Jessel BMW. Read about her experiences in the auto industry.

With the changing seasons and shorter days, we urge all drivers and riders to be extra cautious of pedestrians. We had first-hand experience of this when just two months ago, my father was struck, while crossing in a marked crosswalk, by a distracted driver. Accidents will always happen, but always be a responsible and cautious driver.

Victoria Beckham is “petrified” about her son learning to ride a motorcycle next year. The former Spice Girls singer is worried about Brooklyn getting his moped license when he turns 16 next March after her husband David crashed his bike in August. A source told the Sun-day Mirror newspaper: “Victoria is petrified. It’s every mum’s worst nightmare when their child wants a motorbike. But Brooklyn is so determined, he loves it as much as his dad. “He loves motorcycles and can’t wait to be 16 next spring, when he can take his test.”

The 40-year-old designer would never stop her children - including Romeo, 12, Cruz, nine, and Harper, three - from doing anything they want to do but she’s hoping Brooklyn changes his mind about get-ting a bike. The source explained: “David and Victoria would never want to stop their children doing anything but she is hoping Brooklyn changes his mind. It scares the living daylights out of her.”

David, 39, was left battered and bruised this summer after he came off his motorcycle in Los Angeles as he was leaving a Sunset Boule-vard tattoo parlor. He said at the time: “It was not a great experience but I was lucky. Riding bikes is dangerous at times.”

Victoria Beckham Worried About Son’s Love of Motorbikes

A new study suggests that state laws requiring “universal” mo-torcycle helmet use -- instead of helmet laws just for certain ages -- may lower the rates of traumatic brain injuries in young riders.

Traumatic brain injuries are “the biggest burden in trauma care, so we wanted to see whether having universal helmet laws versus age-specific helmet laws really made a difference in the younger population,” study co-author Dr. Bellal Joseph, a trauma surgeon and associate professor of surgery at the University of Arizona, Tucson, said in a news release from the American College of Sur-geons.

States with universal helmet rules require all motorcycle driv-ers and passengers to wear a helmet. The new research doesn’t confirm a link between the universal motorcycle helmet laws and lower rates of serious head injuries among youths. Still, research-ers said that laws requiring helmets do reduce deaths and traumatic head injuries in adults.

Nineteen states and the District of Columbia require all motor-cycle riders to wear helmets. Some states require them only for those under 18 or 21, even though research shows that the highest rates of death and injury are among riders aged 20 to 24.

“We know from research that helmet use is significantly greater in states with universal laws compared to those with age-limited laws or no laws at all,” lead study author Dr. K. Tinsley Anderson, a general surgery resident at the University of Arizona, said in the news release.

“What we also find is that having an age-limited law is the same as having no law at all,” Anderson added. “The rates of helmet us-age in those states are the same as not having a law at all.”

The researchers examined a database of hospital admissions with a focus on patients who suffered traumatic brain injuries due to motorcycle accidents in 2011. They found 598 cases in 39 states.

The rate of traumatic brain injuries per motorcycle accident was lower in the states with universal helmet laws compared to those that require helmets for riders of certain ages: 307 per 1,000 in states with laws requiring helmets for those under 18 years; 366 per 1,000 in states requiring helmets for those under 21; and 282 per 1,000 in states requiring universal helmet use.

Death rates from traumatic brain injuries were also lower in states with universal helmet laws, the investigators found.

After accounting for all injuries together, the researchers said that young riders in states with universal helmet laws were 2.5 times less likely to suffer a traumatic head injury than those in states with age restrictions.

The study was released Tuesday at the annual meeting of the American College of Surgeons in San Francisco. The data and con-clusions of research presented at meetings are usually considered preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed medical journal.

Nissan is announcing Canada’s best commercial van war-ranty* on its 2015 NV200 Compact Cargo van, increasing basic limited warranty coverage from three years/60,000 kilometres to five years/160,000 kilometres or whichever comes first. The powertrain limited warranty has also been extended from five years/100,000 kilometres to five years/160,000 kilometres, whichever comes first.

“While we’re relatively new to the world of commercial ve-hicles in Canada, we’ve already proven our mettle with vehicles that endure harsh conditions that passenger cars will never see,” said Steven Rhind, director of marketing at Nissan Canada Inc. “This warranty reaffirms our confidence in the quality of our ve-hicles, as some NV200 vehicles we’re aware of in Europe have already accrued 880,000-plus kilometres of real-world use.”

Nissan has been selling commercial vehicles in Canada since spring 2011 with the introduction of the NV Cargo and NV Pas-senger vans. The NV200 Compact Cargo was released to ac-claim in April 2013, as the segment needed a commercial quality vehicle that optimizes cargo space while offering the best pos-sible fuel economy and an affordable price.

Year-to-date, Nissan has sold 945 NV200 compact cargo vans in Canada, a 127 per cent increase over this time period in 2013.

“As Nissan Commercial Vehicles have established a reputa-tion for ruggedness and durability in the field, we’re gaining sales traction and customer acceptance of our work vehicles,” Rhind added. “We’re in the commercial vehicle game for the long haul, and this warranty will further help our customers to have greater confidence in their vehicles.”

The Nissan NV200 Compact Cargo is assembled in Cuer-navaca, Mexico and available through a select network of certi-fied Nissan Commercial Vehicle dealers nationwide.

General Motors is moving production of the Chevrolet Volt’s elec-tric drive unit from Mexico to a Detroit-area factory as it updates the slow-selling car to increase its electric range and make it perform bet-ter.

The Volt can go about 38 miles on battery power before a small gasoline generator kicks in. In the revamped version, coming in the second half of next year, the battery will store more energy yet be smaller, allowing the car to go farther on battery power, CEO Mary Barra said in a speech delivered at the Detroit Economic Club on Tuesday.

Moving the electric drive from Ramos Arzipe, Mexico, to the War-ren, Michigan, transmission plant means that all of the Volt’s main components -- the electric drive unit, battery pack and gasoline gen-erator -- will be made in the U.S. starting next year. An electric drive unit powers the Volt’s wheels.

GM won’t hire any new workers in Warren to make the drive sys-tem. Barra also announced that GM will invest another $300 million in Southeast Michigan factories before the end of this year, but she gave no details.

She also did not say how far the second-generation Volt will be able to go on battery power alone, but said it will be a “significant leap forward” in technology from the current version.

The new car, she said, will accelerate faster than the old one and have a more efficient gas generator than the current 1.4-litre, four-cyl-inder engine. GM announced last year that it would build a new 1.5-li-tre four-cylinder engine for the Volt at a factory in Flint, Michigan.

In the speech, Barra conceded the Volt’s 70,000 in sales since 2010 did not reach expectations. “The scorecard on the first-generation Volt is good, but not everything we wanted,” she said. “We have learned so much, including that breakthrough technology doesn’t always ad-vance in a straight line.”

Through September this year, GM has sold 14,540 Volts, down more than 13 per cent from a year ago as gas prices have slipped downward to around $3 per gallon.

Barra also said GM still has to improve significantly and quickly, and she’s becoming impatient since taking over the company in Janu-ary. Shortly after she started in the top job, GM went through the largest recall crisis in its history, calling back more than 30 million vehicles so far this year. But recalls weren’t mentioned in the prepared remarks.

“I want it understood that the day of GM being a polite competitor is over,” she said. “We will be tough, unrelenting competitors.”

Cadillac recently held the introduction of its all-new Escalade in the heart of Toronto, specifically in the heart of Yorkville. This upscale slice of Toronto real estate is home to exclusive shops and restaurants, and luxurious hotels. Basically, this is a place to be seen, or be seen in a vehicle that projects the image one wants to portray. Media

guests for the Escalade launch stayed at Toronto’s very first boutique hotel, The Hazelton. As one Torontonian put it, “That’s about the fanciest place in town.” It certainly draws an upscale crowd of really rich, or posers looking the part. With a steady lineup of Ferrari, McLaren and other exot-ics parked outside, Cadillac was front and centre, showing off its new, full-size luxury SUV to a young, well-healed crowd of Toronto socialites and business people.

Looks: Getting a full-size truck into a boutique hotel is like trying to park an Escalade in one of those parking spots

labeled “small car”. To get around this, the party part of the launch was held on a garage rooftop, transformed into a nightclub, com-plete with gourmet finger food, fancy cocktails and live perform-ers, including the requisite fire-twirling entertainers. There was even Escalade inspired golf carts to shuttle guests to the roof. The star of the show was the all-new 2015 Escalade, a vehicle Cadillac hopes will make up about twenty percent of its overall sales. With a $6, 000 price drop and very competitive packages, they hope even wealthy shoppers will see the value in this SUV. It sure got atten-tion, thanks to the fabulous LED projector headlamps and taillights. The angular shape is very modern and the sleek sheet metal looks up to date.

Inside: The Escalade always makes an impact when it ar-rives at any destination, and the sheer size and attitude it

projects says a lot about the person driving it. The inside was what needed to be refreshed the most, and the attention to detail Cadillac infused in its new truck should pay dividends. Any luxury buyer expects leather, wood, and a smart infotainment center, which Ca-dillac delivers on all of these. The dash and doors are covered with hand-cut leather. The open-grain wood and contrasting interior materials, like faux suede, all make it look as rich as the buyer expects. Front and centre is Cadillac’s CUE entertainment system that I find easy to operate and interact with. The buttons below it are touch sensitive; there are no knobs or switches. Front passengers sim-ply swipe their fingers over the surface to change the volume and heat controls. Cadillac is making a bet that young buyers will like this, yet I suspect that older, tra-ditional Cadillac buyers might find it tricky at first.

Drive: One of the reasons to buy a big truck-based SUV, like this Escalade, is to move a

lot of people or tow a trailer to say a cabin or cottage. This is just what I experienced on the drive portion of the Escalade launch, driving north of Toronto to The Briars, a 100-hectare resort on the edge of Lake Sim-

coe. This family-run complex includes a huge stretch of lake front-age, golf course, pools, tennis courts, and activities for all ages – the Escalade fits right in. For moving a large family around in comfort, the Escalade is wonderful as there is plenty of room to stretch out and when the long wheelbase (ESV) model is chosen, the room be-hind the third row of seats is impressive. Granted, about 70 percent of all buyers choose the shorter wheelbase as it looks less impos-ing, and some might not need the interior vastness. Under the hood is GM’s premium 6.2L V8 with a whopping 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. This might seem like overkill but this larger engine can switch off to just four cylinders under light load, more often, greatly increasing fuel economy. The power goes to just the rear wheels, all four wheels, or automatically controlled, all by a switch on the dash. My experience driving for the day returned about 12L/100km in mostly highway driving. Not bad for such a big truck.

Verdict: Buyers of high-end vehicles look for value as well, even though they might splash out on other luxuri-

ous items like expensive hotels, meals, and cloths. The new Esca-lade adds about $10,000 worth of new equipment, like the standard magnetic ride control for a more nimble ride. The cabin is much quieter, convenient when doing big business deals on the phone, and the ride overall is much more refined than before. Starting at

$79,900 the Escalade is for the well-healed, but Cadillac representatives told me that most buyers shoot for the moon and buy the top Premium model for $90, 500. In the past, many Escalades were imported from the United States, but with this new aggressive pricing strategy, Ca-dillac Canada is confident that the majority will now be purchased here in Canada. It was nice to live the Cadillac experience, even for the one day. The new Cadillac is fresh and much more refined, with features never seen before. Do young wealthy buyers like the Cadillac brand and where it is going? The short answer is yes. GM claims this is the fastest growing luxury brand in Canada and BC is a hot spot for the Escalade.

It has been seven years since we’ve had an all-new Escalade… the wait was worth it.

Many soon-to-be owners of a new vehicle often have the question should I buy or lease? Both have their benefits and drawbacks depending on your individu-

al situation. I always inform my clients that it comes down to three key points: intent of use, cash-flow, and tax treatment.

If you intend to use your new vehicle for business purposes it makes sense to purchase if you have the cash available, as you would not be subject to any kilometer restrictions on the lease and your company gains an asset, increasing leverage. If you do not have the means to purchase immediately and must use financing, be aware of the impact to your credit score and borrowing power. In situations like this, sometimes leasing may be more attractive. Keep in mind, any corporately owned vehicle not used 100% for business and that does not qualify as a “business use” vehicle under CRA guidelines can create a taxable benefit for yourself.

Cash-flow is another issue, as it may be beneficial to lease so that you are not tying up liquid cash which could be invested else-where. When purchasing compared to leasing, owners should con-sider that over time once the vehicle is no longer under warranty repairs can become very costly. The benefits of leasing is usually lower monthly payments as they are based on the price of the ve-hicle minus the residual value, amortized over the length of the lease. However, leasing has its fair share of drawbacks with pricey consequences for going over mileage limits, and significant penal-ties for early exits.

A basic highlight of tax considerations when leasing or buying is that if financing to purchase, the interest deduction is limited to $300 a month. Deductions for lease payments are restricted to $800 a month, plus GST and PST. The depreciation rate allowed for business deductibility is 15% in the year you acquire the ve-hicle, followed by 30% in each subsequent year. The cost of the vehicle available for depreciation is usually capped at $30,000 with exceptions for specific non-passenger and working vehicles.

As always, cash is king, if you have the cash then purchasing makes sense, only consider leasing when you don’t have the cash, are a low-mileage driver and don’t want the hassle of reselling. In the end, consult a Chartered Accountant as they will help clarify the decision of leasing, financing or buying a vehicle.

Chevrolet revealed the 2015 Camaro Com-memorative Edition at the SEMA Show. The special edition celebrates the success of the fifth-generation Camaro – which is on track to be America’s best-selling performance car for five consecutive years – and marks the final year for the fifth generation. The special edi-tion goes on sale this spring.

More than 400,000 fifth-generation Ca-maros have been sold since April 2009. Since then, Camaro has been America’s best-selling performance car for four consecutive years.

Camaro sales for the first 10 months of 2014 are up 8 percent over the same period a year ago, and Camaro currently leads Mustang by 10,000 sales – putting Camaro on track to be America’s favorite performance car for a fifth consecutive year.

Eating long distances in supreme comfort is what the Trophy does best. Added to that is its amazing ability to transform into a motorcycle that is equally happy to tackle the twisty

roads. Triumph has launched its third salvo directly at BMW, and frankly, it’s a darn good one. They fired the first with the 800 Tigers, the second with the 1200 Explorer, and this third with the Trophy SE. The result is the ultimate in touring bike luxury, with the most comprehensive levels of equipment ever seen on any Triumph mo-torcycle. All this is paired up with the sharpest, best handling chassis and a muscular, torque laden 1215cc engine steeped in three-cylinder character. This engine is the same one used in the Explorer, and it’s a gem!

The standard features list is impressively extensive. Electroni-cally adjustable windshield, AM/FM satellite radio with Bluetooth, aux input and weather band, mag lock powered storage console unit with USB-input, ride by wire throttle, traction control, ABS, linked brakes, cruise control, tire-pressure monitors, electrically adjustable windscreen, adjustable seat height, electrically adjustable headlights and shaft final drive. Like I said, it is well equipped! The icing on the cake is that it all works so smashingly well together.

Powered by a responsive 1215 cc three-cylinder engine produc-ing 132hp @ 8,900 rpm and 89 lb.-ft.@6,450 rpm, the 2014 Trophy SE also features many of the accouterments a long-distance rider may desire, including shaft drive, hard saddlebags and a cavernous optional top case, an electronically adjustable windscreen, three-stage electronically adjustable suspension, two-step heated grips, operator and passenger outlets for heated gear, cruise control, linked ABS, switchable traction control, a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS), Sirius-equipped audio system with Bluetooth and iPhone/iPod technology, and a full array of data accessible through the

tive engine is second to none. Triumph’s version has buttery smooth tip-in, no surging or hunting at constant throttle and responds per-fectly to your commands. It also has amazing fuel mileage. I aver-aged from 47 - 58 mpg tanks during my travels. Combine that with the 6.9-gallon tank and you’d better make sure you visit the bath-room before you leave! It’s a good thing that the Trophy SE gets such great mileage, because it’s amazingly competent and comfortable. It’s so easy to cover miles on. The wind management and protection is the best I’ve ever tested on this type of bike. Crank the windshield all the way up and you have a serene protective cockpit. Crank it all the way down and you have good airflow at helmet and shoulder levels. Drop it about 3 inches below your line of sight and you have sport touring nirvana! The ergonomics and seat are excellent and I loved the mirrors, which are positioned below your arms and offer an excellent vibration free view. I can truly say that this bike has the best combination of value, content and execution of them all. It is an excellent high quality piece of hardware from one of the most storied marques in motorcycle history.

What didn’t I like on the Trophy SE? The most glaring of prob-lems I encountered during my time with the bike was the constant need to keep tabs on the information shared via the digital dash. In fact, I didn’t need to pay attention to any of that and so the issue re-ally is a personal one.

Ultimately, riding this bike constantly reminded me how the Brit-ish appear to have the Germans in their crosshairs. The 2014 Tri-umph Trophy SE has a MSRP of $19,999, which is quite attractive. As I’ve said from the beginning, it is a sport bike designed to cover miles comfortably.

About thirty years ago, automobiles were much simpler as compared to today. Sure, there were basic “luxury” features back then, such as cruise control, air condi-

tioning, and even ABS. Nobody had heard of Bluetooth, navigation systems (people used map books), or even HID headlamps. Fast for-ward to the current day and our vehicles are home to such advanced technologies that had seemed only possible in movies. But will such technologies affect the way we drive, whether today or in the future? Will they affect insurance claims if a system fails? These are some of the questions that are arising in this new era of advanced technolo-gies.

Advanced automotive technologies (such as Lane Assist and Adaptive Cruise Control) have become such a huge part of the auto industry that not only do they influence our daily commutes, but also our future vehicle purchases. These incredible features have made driving a lot easier, more convenient, and safer. Take the Lane Depar-ture Warning System (LDS) for example. On a freeway or highway, the LDS will warn the driver when they begin to move out of their lane, either out of driver error, distractions or drowsiness. The warn-ing may be a vibration in the steering wheel, an audible sound, or a combination of the two.

Automatic Parking is another impressive feature that allows cars to autonomously park from a traffic lane into a parking spot, perform parallel parking, and even perpendicular or angle parking. These are extremely advanced systems aimed at making our everyday drives easier and less stressful, and more importantly, safer. Recently, Mer-cedes-Benz announced a new technology where the driver can let the car drive itself for a maximum time of 15 seconds, in which speed and turns are controlled by a combination of advanced computers, radar, and cameras.

But the question remains: at what point do we become too reli-ant on these technologies? At some point in the near future, these technologies will be so prevalent and commonplace in vehicles that we will be using them as frequently as we do cell phones and other devices.

Who will, or is, to blame when a system fails and an accident happens because the drivers are too reliant on the automatic systems and not paying attention? Or what happens when a person who has been reliant on these technologies for a long time gets into a vehicle that doesn’t come with these fancy features. Are drivers missing op-portune moments to learn essential driving skills and valuable situ-ational experience?

These technologies are relatively new, so they haven’t hit a point where many of us are overly reliant on them, mainly because we learned and grew up without these driving assists. But should we worry? Is it a legitimate reason to be concerned about the drivers who rely too much on these sorts of features?

Would you feel safer knowing that the person behind the wheel is trained to handle the situation, or that there is a computer ready to intervene in a fraction of human response time? Then again, these systems also save valuable lives when the driver is otherwise dis-tracted or fatigued. How much reliance should we place on these systems, because too much and it becomes an excuse not to pay at-tention, too little and preventable accidents would slip by. What’s the right balance?

These are only some of the questions that are being raised by manufacturers, drivers, legal experts, and of course, insurance pro-viders. Let’s face it, at some point, one of these technologies is going to fail and cause an accident and at that point, towards whom do we point the finger?

The spring, summer, and fall months of 2014 provided for some great riding in the Lower

Mainland area. I had the opportunity to ride some great motorcycles, but with November now upon us, it’s probably time to put the motorcycle away for the winter months. Many novice bike owners will make some innocent mistakes when “putting” their bikes away for winter, but there are some crucial things to keep in mind. I had the opportunity to chat with Jamie Nichols, Operations Manager of Ducati Richmond, about the preparations one should take when storing his or her bike for winter. Ac-cording to Nichols, here are the top things to keep in mind.

Change the oil:By installing fresh oil, most contaminants

are removed and if the oil is hot, it will drain more thoroughly. Filling the oil up to the filler hole is a good idea because it’ll cover transmission components, eliminating the possibility of rust formation.

Wash the Bike:Your bike will accumulate dust, dirt, and

road grime during your rides. Make sure your motorcycle is clean and any bare metal surfaces are protected. It’s even a good idea to spray all nuts and bolts with WD-40.

Fill the Gas Tank and add Fuel Stabilizer:Jamie Nichols says that, “A half-empty

gas tank and untreated gasoline can create major, expensive issues over the course of time. A full gas tank helps prevent rust from forming inside the tank.” Nichols added that adding a fuel stabilizer will preserve the fuel’s quality. Run the bike briefly to get the stabilizer distributed throughout the system, especially if you have a bike with carburetor.

Cover the Mufflers:It’s surprising where small critters and

creatures will hide. Cover the exhaust(s) tightly so that there are no surprises when you get the bike ready for spring.

Put the Bike on a Trickle Charger:If you’re able to, remove the battery and

put it on a trickle charger so that it stays fresh during the storage months. If you don’t have a charger, then charge it every

two weeks. Alternately, failing both of these, remove the battery and place it in, “a warm, dry place,” says Nichols.

Store the Bike & Use a Cover:Nichols suggests the best place for park-

ing your bike for winter is in dry place, away from moisture. So, if you can, park it inside a garage. If you’re parking the bike outside, invest in a good quality cover to shield the bike from the elements. Nichols says to use a cover even if the bike is parked indoors so that there is an extra layer of protection.

A motorcycle can be a significant invest-ment for many people and taking the neces-sary steps to properly store your machine can save you a lot of aggravation during spring. Rather than have some unexpected surprises, follow the procedures above, as outlined by Jamie Nichols of Ducati Rich-mond, and you’ll be on the road quicker when spring arrives.

But in this case, they also describe America’s latest and best homegrown electric vehicle, the 2014 Tesla Model S. Tesla has taken the North American market by storm, with more and more people purchasing this all-electric vehicle. You don’t have to be born with a silver spoon in your mouth to know that Bentley builds some of the most incredibly fine automobiles on the

planet. For the one percent of people who are considered “ultra-wealthy,” the 2014 Flying Spur is a vehicle that de-livers uncompromised four-door luxury, unbridled perfor-mance, and a lifestyle that most only dream about.

As an auto journalist, I’ve been blessed to have the op-portunity to drive some of the most luxurious and pres-tigious cars built. For the week that I enjoyed this 2014 Bentley W12, I pretended that my pockets were deep, just to see if the Flying Spur would keep its promise as being one of the best. At one point, I almost thought of hiring a “Jeeves” just to have the full experience.

What can one say about the styling of the 2014 Flying Spur other than it’s beautiful. At the front, the signature mesh Bentley grille and fascia are lower and more upright as compared to earlier models, now more similar to the Mulsanne. Coupled with the quad headlight visage, com-

plete with circular LED’s, Bentley’s front end is aggressive and bold. What I really like about the style is the wide stance at the rear wheels, which is eloquently achieved by a high character line that runs from the rear doors to the trunk lid. The car has a taste-fully muscular stance that others have tried to match, but none have perfected. My Flying Spur…wow, I like the sound of that actual-ly…oops, back to reality, was fitted with the optional 21” Mulliner wheels, completing the overall look. Body panels are made of alu-minum and composite, offering substantial weight savings. Then there’s the colour, Hall-mark. Initially, the colour is one that I would probably never choose, but the more I looked at it, the better it looked each time. What’s more is that I don’t think this colour would look nice on any other car, other than a Bent-

ley. Oh and by the way, you can order your Flying Spur in almost any colour of choice.

The cabin of the car is lavish, sophisticat-ed, and timeless, as Bentley owners will set-tle for nothing less. The interior is wrapped in hand-stitched leather, chrome, and lacquered and polished veneer. For the rear passengers, the traditional fold-down tables are kept, in case you need to sign some multi-million dollar deals while being chauffeured to your next meeting. And in case you needed to send or receive important emails, there’s an inte-grated Wi-Fi hotspot. Since most owners of this Flying Spur will be driven around, rear passengers have access to many of the car’s functions, such as the sound system, naviga-tion, climate control; in fact, they can even check how fast the car’s being driven.

Talking about driving, don’t mistake this uber-luxury car to be docile. Even though Bentley decided to drop the Continental name in the new Flying Spur, it’s still a driver’s car. The new 2014 weighs about 120 lbs less than the previous Continental Flying Spur, but it’s still hefty at almost 5, 451 lbs. To get this tank moving, my test Bentley came equipped with its coveted, yet updated, twin-turbo 6.0 liter W12 engine in all its glory (a V8 is now available). Did I mention this W12 engine now develops 616 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque? If you’ve never driven a car with this much torque, it’s like strapping a jetpack to your back and then pressing launch. Yes, it is that fast. Off the line, it pounces to 100 km/h in just 4.6 seconds, by sending power to all four wheels, enough to push your stomach to back of the seat. After the initial launch, the Flying Spur feels like a luxury sedan again, offering acceleration that is so velvety smooth, quiet, and with seamless shifts, that you might even forget you’re moving that fast. Top speed is about 322 km/h, not very practical, but defi-nitely great for bragging rights while enjoy-ing a martini at the local country club. And fuel economy? Well, who cares about fuel economy when you’re driving a Bentley,

right?So how was the car around town? Amazing.

Astounding. Remarkable. I had the luxury of driving this car around for a week and I felt like a million bucks. Oops, got side tracked again. Back to the car, ride quality is amaz-ing as is the handling. The Flying Spur has standard air suspension, allowing the driver to lower or raise the car at will. Remember, however, the car will lower automatically as speeds increase. Steering is precise and with this car, feedback from the road is spot on. All controls in the car are within reach so that the driver is always focused on the road and the drive. I had the opportunity to take my wife and kids for a quick spin to Squa-mish and the car was unbelievably quiet at all speeds. Again, Bentley owners expect this kind of sound dampening. My two girls, who are only 5 and 7, thought the car was “cool” but couldn’t understand why daddy had a big smile plastered on his face the entire time.

Personally speaking, the Flying Spur was an absolute joy, and honour, to drive. I’m a driver at heart so if I owned this car as my personal vehicle, I would want to drive it every day. For the one week, everywhere I went, people’s gaze fell upon the car. They took out their smart phones to take pictures, and so many stopped and asked me questions about the car. Even when I took the car to a couple of corporate meetings, our clients wanted to talk more about the car than con-duct business. That’s the effect a Bentley has on society.

In today’s economy, which has seen many ups and downs, the demand for ultra, high-end luxury cars has not diminished, especial-ly for those who crave prestigious, limited hand-built vehicles.

The Bentley Flying Spur starts at $246,540, so yes, it’s not budget friendly. But one thing is for sure – for those who enjoy the finer things life, the 2014 Flying Spur does keep its promise as being a collection of every-thing you could want.

a Chat with Leah Gillanders, Certified Technician at Brian Jessel BMW

Will the female mechanics please stand up? If asked this question in 1989, you’d be lucky to have 1 in a room of 100 mechanics stand up? If the same ques-

tion was asked in 1999, 2 would have stood up, and today, the num-ber is about 6 out of 100. Even though these may not be staggering numbers, they are still positive, and welcome, changes in the male-dominated automotive industry. Nowadays, women are willing and able to perform and go after whatever job they want, whether it be in the fields of business, management, science, or trade.

Some guys might feel intimidated by a female knowing more about cars than them; but I’m willing to bet that most guys would be thanking their lucky stars if their girlfriend, wife, sister, or even mother knew how to fix their car (remember the scene in the first Transformers movie?). Recently, I had a chance to sit and chat with Leah Gillanders, certified technician at Brian Jessel BMW. I wanted to hear first-hand about her experiences as a female “mechanic”.

Leah has been a certified automotive technician for ten years, with almost three years at Toyota and the past seven years at Brian Jessel BMW. “When I was still in elementary school, I took apart my Super Nintendo and put it back together,” began Leah, “because I was curious about how things worked.” She, of course, loved cars and knew at an early age that it was a career she wanted to pursue. “We also had an old Chevy that used to keep breaking down, so I would tinker with it and get it going again.”

In high school, Leah took her first automotive class in grade ten, and soon followed with it in grade eleven, earning top marks in both classes. In fact, Leah was so talented in the auto mechanics field that she received a full scholarship to BCIT. “Rather than completing my grade twelve, I was at BCIT doing first year auto mechanics,” says Leah. Yes, she was definitely talented. “I was so intrigued with performance and tuning that I knew I had made the right choice.”

Asked whether her first year was difficult, Leah admitted it was. “It’s not an easy program and regardless of whether you’re a guy or girl, it’s hard. Yes, it’s still a male-dominated industry, but at the end

of the day, it’s just knowledge.” Leah added that as she got deeper into the program, things made sense and it all came together.

After completing her first year, Leah was an apprentice for the next four years, with six weeks each year for classroom learning. “The field work was where I felt right at home, working on cars, learning the trade, and getting paid, of course,” says Leah. As each year passed in her apprenticeship, her salary increased. When asked if she encountered any negative comments, Leah replied that she had an overall very positive experience. “With increased knowledge, I became much more efficient at the various mechanical issues, and thus I gained the respect of my fellow technicians.”

With technician certification in her pocket, Leah began to work with Toyota for a few years before moving to BMW. “The educa-tion and training doesn’t stop,” said Leah. “At BMW, we are always learning about new motor configurations, technology, and modifica-tions. Brian Jessel BMW makes sure that all of us are up-to-date with all aspects of our vehicles.” When asked what she loves about her job the most, Leah said it’s about helping clients learn more about their vehicles. “I’ve found that more than ever, women are really in tune with their cars. Compared to before, woman want to know more about the problems, and fixes, to their cars.” With this in mind, Brian Jessel BMW launched a new venture called, “ladies Auto Tech Day” where Leah hosts a complimentary info session for females who want to learn more about their vehicles. The first Tech Day, held in September was so popular that Leah and the dealership are getting inquiries to hold more sessions more frequently.

As a father of two young girls, I try to make sure that both of them help me when I’m working on our own cars. From passing a wrench to topping up fluids, my girls are intrigued with the work-ings of the automobile. My hope is that they both become informed individuals who have a good basic working knowledge of cars. The thought of writing an article on pedestrian accidents was not on my short-term radar, but when my father-in-law was struck by a car while crossing a street in a

marked crosswalk, the issue immediately became important. Nobody wants to receive a call that a family member has been

in an accident, especially if he or she is a pedestrian. I was shocked to learn that according to a recent survey, 56% of traffic fatalities in the GVRD are pedestrians, with over 2000 people either injured or killed. It came as no surprise however, that most of these were due to driver inattention.

After a couple of weeks, with my father-in-law out of hospi-tal and on the long and painful road to recovery, we knew that we were going to have to deal with ICBC. Were the processes of a pedestrian injury claim the same than for a normal motor vehicle accident? Do pedes-trians involved in an accident have the same rights?

We knew that if we had such questions, then others probably did as well. Thus, we decided to contact our legal expert, Barinder Sanghera of Sang-hera Sandhar Law Group, and get his advice on such matters.

JD: Most people know that motor vehicle accidents deal with ICBC, but does that apply to pedestrians as well? Can you explain this briefly.

BS: Yes. Pedestrian claims are handled the same way as regu-lar claims, for the most part. In most pedestrian accidents in BC, ICBC will be the insurer for the driver of the vehicle that struck the pedestrian. ICBC will do all of the same investigations it nor-mally does: Who was at fault? What is the nature of the injuries? Was there wage loss? Did the pedestrian contribute to the Acci-dent?

Most claims are handled by ICBC in exactly the same manner as if a person had been injured in a vehicle rather than while walk-ing or standing as a pedestrian.

JD: Is the process of starting a claim for a pedestrian claim the same as any other motor vehicle claim?

BS: It is exactly the same. The injured pedestrian, or someone on their behalf, will call ICBC Dial-a-Claim and advise what hap-pened and obtain a claim number so the process can get started.

JD: Most will agree that pedestrians injured in accidents will have more injuries. How are out-of-pocket expenses dealt with?

BS: Out of pocket expenses are dealt with exactly the same way. The Part 7 (no fault) benefits (for example: the ICBC por-tion of the physiotherapy or massage therapy) are paid directly by ICBC. Other expenses (for example: user fees for physiotherapy or massage therapy) are to be submitted to the injured person’s

extended health insurer, if there is one. Otherwise, if there is no extended health insurer, those expenses are dealt with when a claim settles or at trial.

JD: Should a pedestrian deal directly with ICBC or hire a lawyer?

BS: This is up to the injured person to decide. A lawyer will be able to better handle the injury claim and guide the injured person, who will be focused on dealing with his or her injuries and getting back to a normal life. A lawyer will also have the training and experience to go through the litigation process if the claim is more serious or if ICBC is not cooperating. How-ever, the injured person must feel comfortable in dealing with a lawyer and make that decision.

JD: Any specific advice for pedestrians who are injured in a motor vehicle accident?

BS: Pedestrians should keep the clothes they were wearing at the time of the Accident as sometimes ICBC will raise a defence that the clothing was too dark and the pedestrian bears blame. It is also important for all injured persons to take pho-tographs of any cuts or bruises after the Accident.

After speaking with Barinder, we were better informed about how to proceed with our case and with ICBC. This ac-cident was devastating to our family, but thankfully, my father-in-law is a strong man and with treatment and over time, we hope will make a full recovery. With difficult situations like this, it’s never easy to deal with a legal case, and that’s why it’s always best to get advice from a trusted lawyer, and in my opinion, hire one.

BMW has been a fan favourite, including that of yours tru-ly, for decades because simply, they build great vehicles. Recently, I was asked by Brian Jessel BMW to test their

flagship 7-series and trust me, they didn’t have to twist my arm very much. After a few emails back-and-forth, I was handed the keys to a new 2014 750Li (L signifying the long wheelbase model). I had a very short window for this test drive, but I was assured that I could take it again for a longer period of time within a couple of weeks.

The 7-series underwent a modest makeover in 2013, with exterior changes being mostly at the front end, which now has a more ag-gressive appearance due to a new fascia. The kidney grills are large, placed centrally between the new automatic, adaptive, and self-levelling LED headlights. The lines of the BMW flow very nicely from the front to the rear, giving the car a very formal, yet athletic overall appearance. The chrome accents are also a nice touch. Step inside this full-size luxury sedan and that’s where the changes are more dramatic. The 7-series now has more contoured front seats, complete with built-in massagers. The rear seats also received up-grades; take it from me, if you’re going to buy a 7-series, spend the extra money and get the longer wheelbase because the extra 5.5” means very happy rear passengers, who will thank you for the ex-tra room. I had three passengers, all over six feet tall in the rear and they were amazed at the space. Other interior changes are seen in the trim choices and dashboard design; some will think that the dash of the new 7 looks an awful lot like that of the 5-series, which it correct. Yes, I think BMW should have done something a little different to set these classes apart; that being said, the dash is still simply elegant. The overall cockpit design and layout is a sure win-

ner – it’s not overly cluttered and is rather straightforward, perfect for a luxury car.

My test 750Li was equipped with the all-new 5.0L twin-turbo V8 and ask almost any journalist, this engine is a gem. It’s silky smooth and power is instantaneous, capable of sending this all-wheel drive sedan from 0 – 100 km/h in just 4.6 seconds; such amazing numbers compete with the best sports cars. On the road, the 750Li was easy to drive and manoeuver. Air suspension is standard on all 7-series, as is the Driving Dynamics Control, a system that governs shock firm-ness, steering heft, transmission shifts, and throttle responses. If you don’t like the presets, you have the option to tweak settings to suit your unique driving style, which I did. I drove the vehicle mostly in Comfort Mode, which is great for every day driving, and in Sport+ Mode, where I was tempted to unleash the true hidden power of the car. I would really like to try this car on the track one day. Maybe next time.

The 750Li is aimed at providing a super luxurious ride to its oc-cupants and it doesn’t disappoint. Ride quality isn’t soft or overly bouncy; it’s very well controlled and is as about as firm as is needed without sacrificing comfort. I was also surprised how quiet the cabin was, considering the sheets of rain that came down during my test drive. BMW’s xDrive ensured that even in the downpours we had, this 750Li was sure-footed at all times, important when you have two little girls in the back seat.

In the full-size luxury class, the BMW 750Li is a great vehicle that won’t disappoint. My first time behind the wheel of BMW’s flagship was amazing; look forward to a full review in the December 2014 issue of DRK Magazine.

On October 9th, DRK Magazine was invited to the Lexus NX preview and launch party at Open Road Lexus in Richmond, BC. The General Manager, Jeremy Schaab, provided the anxious crowd with all the information about the new 2015 Lexus crossover. The evening was packed with great food, drinks, and entertainment. Christian Chia, Open Road Auto Group founder and CEO,

was also at hand and took time to talk to us about the Open Road Group and its future plans. He also mentioned he liked DRK Magazine.The new 2015 Lexus NX will be available in naturally aspirated, turbocharged, and hybrid versions. For this new Lexus, designers of the

vehicle stated that seating played a huge role in the overall interior design of the vehicle. The NX was a huge hit at the launch party, with many prospective buyers reserving their vehicle.

When deciding on which motorcycle to include as this month’s classic ride, I reminisced about some of my first motorcycles. The one that jumped to mind was my first motorcycle ever, a red and white 1981 Honda CBX 550F,

which I had named Betty. I had purchased my CBX 550F, Betty, when I was in second-year university and I was

fortunate enough that it was from the original owner. The red and white paint gleamed in the sun and it was one of the most beautiful motorcycles I had seen (okay, fine, I’m probably biased with that comment).

The 1981 CBX 550F was built to be a sports bike and Honda took the steps necessary to make it feel like one. For example, the footrests were mounted well back and high so that it gave a leaning forward riding stance. The handle bars were positioned further from the rider, but slightly angled back to ensure good handling. There was also an optional front fairing that could be added for that extra sporty look. Many people mistook the 550F and the CBX 400, so don’t feel bad if you did too; actually, most would argue that the 500F was the hotrod version of the CBX 400.

Even though the CBX 550F had a continuous dual seat, it was still considered a true sport bike. It came equipped with an air-cooled, four stroke 4-cylinder engine, with four valves per cylinder. Base horsepower was rated at 65, which was quite impressive for an early 1980’s motorcycle. With respect to suspension, there were air-assisted telescopic forks up front, complete with anti-dive and, Pro-link air assisted shocks at the rear. Ride quality on the CBX 550F was very good, whether riding solo or with a passenger. The bike was very agile for riding around town; it also helped that the seat position was quite low, at only 29 inches. On the open roads, the bike became lively as you opened the throttle, with max torque set pretty high on the rev band. But that meant you could really redline the bike without causing damage to the motor. Braking was good due to unique discs designs front and rear; Honda claimed that the new design protected the pads and rotors from getting wet, thus increasing stopping power.

Even though the Honda CBX 550F was made for a couple of years, it has a special place in my heart because not only was it my first motorcycle, it was also my first sport-bike.

Shoppers -- take note! You may not need to cross the border towards Bellingham or Seattle to access major upscale American brands, with many of them

making an appearance in the heart of Downtown Vancouver. Gone are the days when a two-hour drive is required to see a Victoria’s Secret, Forever 21, or J.Crew. We all are familiar with the excitement of Victoria’s Secret much-hyped 2013 launch on Burrard and Robson that drew female (and male) shoppers from around Greater Vancouver. In the last issue of DRK Magazine, I had provided a basic introduction to wines. There was informa-tion given about Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon,

and Chardonnay. With the holiday season now almost upon us, let’s continue looking at the other most popular wine choices. Again, wines are not complicated, but they are more enjoyable if you understand their grapes and choices for pairing.

Merlot: Merlot makes a great dancing partner. It can perform solo, but Merlot truly is a

team player. Just look to the world’s top wine blends. Merlot is a key grape in the heralded reds of Bor-deaux and the New World’s Cabernet-Merlots. It also helps put the “super” in Super Tuscans. Merlot is everywhere, the perfect mediator in the bottle and a great companion for a meal too.

Merlot is a poster child for grape globalization. While its original home is Bordeaux, Merlot’s pass-port has been stamped by most wine growing regions in the world.

Merlot has great versatility. It is best paired with rich comfort foods, like veggies and burgers and fries, but also goes great with cheese and stews. Of course, enjoy the Merlot on its own.

Merlot doesn’t need any special glasses to be en-joyed, but just make sure the glasses are clean.

Riesling: Let’s cut right to the point. Not all Riesling wines are sweet. And anyways, what’s

wrong with having residual sugars in wines? The prob-lem is, there tends to be a misconception that off-dry wines are simple. This simply isn’t the case. In reality, Riesling is one of the great wine grapes of the world, capable of complex layers of flavour and beloved by serious foodies and the sommelier set. The most famous Rieslings are from Germany’s wine valleys, where superlative Riesling is produced and classi-fied according to grape ripeness. Nearby, Austria and the Alsace region of France are also highly regarded for their Riesling. Closer to home, Riesling is also grown in Ontario, BC, and Washington. Riesling is a great cheese food, and also pairs excellently with pork dishes, Schezuan, and curries. Riesling is an aromatic grape and thus, it’s best enjoyed in a good-sized wine glass that permits a proper swirl.

called Syrah, while most other countries know it as Shiraz. This wine is rejoiced for its bold aromas and flavours, which can range from ripe berries and plum through to more animalistic notes of leather and smoked meat.

Years ago, Shiraz was almost exclusively the domain of France’s northern Rhone Valley, where the grape features in the well-regarded wines of Hermitage and Cote Rotie, but the grape has migrated and is common today throughout the entire Rhone and most of Southern France. You will also find this grape in Aus-

tralia, Chile, California, Argentina, and even Washington and BC.

Shiraz is a bold wine that calls for bold foods. Enjoy it with lamb, game meat, aged hard cheese. It’s even great with beef stew. For best taste, make sure to decant the wine for a couple of hours before serving.
