Rocky FootwearThe internship at Rocky Brands spanned 2 months. I helped to develop casual shoes and hunting boot designs for Fall 2009. Material selection was stressed. I also created custom logo and foot bed graphics for these designs.
M Hunter
-Headquartered in Nelsonville, Ohio, Rocky® Outdoor Gear is a world leader
in rugged outdoor and occupational footwear
-A corporate office, warehouse, and distribution center now accompany
the original manufacturing building in Nelsonville that goes back to 1932
Brand Identity
M Hunter
-Projects included casual outdoor shoes and hunting boots-The goal of the casual footwear was to create a family of shoes that reflected the rugged feel of the Rocky brand
while still being versatile
Ideation
M Hunter
-The hunting shoe uses durable Cordura material and full-grain water proof leather
-The casual chukka is made from suede-These shoes were designed on existing outsoles

‘Designer toy’ is a term used to describe toys and other collectibles that are produced in limited editions (as few as 50 or as many as 2000 pieces) and created by artists and designers. This project shows character development and the creation of one of these toys.
Itti Toy
M Hunter
-Sketching focused on developing a character that was cute, awkward,
and humorous-Character took on many forms before
the final design was created
Ideation
M Hunter
-DIY toy movement allows artists to customize a blank toy and sell it as their own-DIY toys must have personality while still allowing for customization

This project was done for the International Housewares Assoc. annual student design competition. My product solves the problem of smelly athletic bags by organizing the items stored in the bag and using various fiber technologies to absorb and prevent odor.
Clean-Bag System
M Hunter
-The main issue with gym bags was odor -The bags are used to transport clean and dirty items-Everything from cell phones to hygiene products are carried in the bag
The Problem
M Hunter
-Current gym bags and odor prevention products were examined
-My goal is to integrate both product types together
-18-30 years old-Male/Female
-Active and Health Conscious-Work out at least 3 times a week

Security-Items were left alone and a secure
storage area is needed
Adaptable -The bag will be used to carry
many things
Streamline Experience -Items remain in bag ignored
and odor develops
Design Criteria
M Hunter
-Early development focused on separating clean and dirty clothes
-Adding separate wash bags solved this problem-An external pocket was added to accommodate dirty items
-An internal pocket was added to hide valuables
Ideation
M Hunter
-Adding a wash bag allowed for dirty clothes to go directly into the wash
-Organization of dirty and clean items was key to design development
-Prototypes focused on sling style bags that used an extra pocket for additional storage
Testing
M Hunter
-The final design is sling-style -1 large main pocket with hidden security pocket -1 external clothes pocket and a beverage pocket
-The Cocona fabric system which absorbs odor and moisture
Final Model

Large Zipper Opening to accommodate various size items
Front pocket folds down Dirty items are stored in mesh wash bag which can go straight-to-wash
Dirty items are then placed in Front Pocket for transport
Reinforced padded back panel for added comfort
Internal Security pocket for valuables

Target Market-18-30 Male-Moderate income-College level degree or beyond-Design Conscious consumer
Crossover HockeyCurrently, there are very few brands that address the inline hockey market. Many players use ice hockey equipment that can be bulky and uncomfortable in warmer environments. Crossover brings a new line of equipment built for the serious inline hockey player.
M Hunter
-Played Indoors on Plastic Tile- Limited Physical Contact- 4 vs 4 -Faster flowing game play
What is Inline Hockey?
18-25 Years oldMaleIn College/Bachelor’s degree$40,000-$60,000/year income
User Profile
M Hunter
Logo and Color Palette-Minimal and clean
-Draws from historic NHL logos-Geometric and linear which reflects
current trends in design-‘Crossover’ comes from a skating term
that involves a smooth and swift change in direction
M Hunter
-Due to the unique nature of the sport, the pants, bag and elbow pads are the focus of the redesign
Ideation
M Hunter
-Features include:-Cylindrical shaped bag with separate
skate pocket-Removable/washable liner in the
elbow pad -Spandex groin in the pants for flexibility
-Reinforced knee pads.
Final Designs
M Hunter
The final design includes:-Removable cool-max liner
-Rigid ABS plastic protection on the bicep and forearm-Adjustable elastic straps-ABS plastic elbow cup.

Campfires are a tradition as old as man. How can we adapt this tradition to fit into a ‘greener’ world? This project modernizes the fire pit into a more sustainable product.
Green Fire
M Hunter
-Burning wood is harmful to the environment
-But it is the most appealing aspect of campfires
-How do I keep emotional connection with campfires and make them more
earth friendly?
The Problem
M Hunter
-Urban dweller-Apartment/Townhouse with limited backyard-25-40 yrs old$60,000-$85,000/year income
Market Research-Alternative fuel sources were studied to make the fire pit more earth friendly-Propane heaters and traditional fire pits were also compared and examined
User Profile
M Hunter
-Saving space is an integral part of the design due to the user’s small staging area -The goal to give the product multiple functions to maximize the usage of this limited space.
Ideation
M Hunter
-Scale models tested human interaction and use-The product functions as a table, fire pit, and
a propane heater

Fire Basin
-Stainless steel construction for added lifespan -An internal propane heater is the main source of heat -Top basin burns wood for purely aesthetic purposes-An accordion-style lid extinguishes the flame-The product uses a standard 20 lb. propane tank which is stored in the base

Kids begin sports at a young age. Parents pay a great deal of money to support their child’s exploration in sports. This curiosity leads to children trying and quitting various sports and leaves their parents paying for equipment that may only be used one season. My thesis creates a modular pad system in which the pads are rented and returned each season during this exploration.
Hyper-React
M Hunter
-Parents spend a large amount on their child’s sports activities-The contact sports of Hockey, Football, and Lacrosse are the most expensive due to the large amount of equipment needed-This high cost limits participation and exploration
The Problem
M Hunter
- Market trends in sports equipment were studied
-Surveys were taken to discover the user’s tastes and trends
-A system was created to establish a rental/return system
-Prototypes examined fit issues and how the user interacts with the product

Simple
ComplexMarketing Matrix
M Hunter
-Anatomy was studied to identify areas that required the most protection and how the pads would move with the body
-Limited color was used in the branding as to not conflict with team colors but still convey a recognizable brand image
