Design PhilosophyAs a practicing artist and designer, I find myself at times trying to distinguish the division line between design and art. My most common answer is usually that design and art fall are not simply black and white, but that they fall into a gray area where there is inevitable interaction and influence onto both realms.

As a result, my design philosophy incorporates both worlds into one that allows me to create unique and visually interesting designs that facilitate communication to any target audience. I find that having knowledge in both worlds has opened new doors to creative ideas and thought processes that allows me to execute in different formats and materials besides just digital.

I find that to be an effective graphic designer, one must understand both spectrums to make the design process easier and to have the familiarity of the extremes of both spectrums so when the tasks asks for it, one could effectively achieve a desired outcome.

WAMArIdentity & Promotion Designs

Project Description:

Wamar International, Inc. has a vision of being “a leading global provider of premium services and products in the fields of Power Generation, Oil and Gas, Aviation, Real Life Support and Defense and Security.”

To help meet its vision, I created a new identity that embodies the company in a more simple and easy to remember way. In the near future, the logo could stand by itself without any text and it helps give a visual representation of the services that Wamar can provide to its clients. The shape of the logo can be described as a windmill, drill, or a turbine, all which are things that can be seen in air, water, and on land solidifying the new tag line “we’ll help you explore” in any element.

Carolina CandyIdentity & Packaging Designs

Project Description:

Carolina Candy Company specializes in tarheel toffee that is flavored by such as almonds, pecans, macadamia nuts, creamy milk, and white & dark chocolate. With a market in the United States and Europe, the company located in Wilmington, North Carolina has the product, but not the correct image for their packaging.

This new logotype gives the company a more playful approach to the market to help it have an entrance into a very competitive field. In the near future, the cursive elements can evolve into something more elegant and classy.

Doctor’s HospitalPrint Design

Project Description:

Doctor’s Hospital of West Covina provides relief to people with nasal problems by using laser radiotheraphy to alleviate several sympthoms. One way they announce their services is via newspapers.

I designed something comical to gain the viewers attention, yet straight to the point to announce what type of services the client provices so that even if it’s glanced at in a newspaper, it will stand out amongst all other ads. The colors used are reminiscent of spring time and outdoors, but still provide contrast so that if printed in black and white, the ad can still be legible and visible.

Project Description:

The California Arts Project (TCAP) strives to improve the K-12 education system of visual and performing arts throughout the state of California by acting as a community center for teachers.

Striving to improve education, TCAP helped create Career Technical Education (CTE) [Media & Design, Performing, & Production & Managerial Arts] and needed an new identity to go along with the current logo design. By having constant communication with regional and the executive director, I managed to encompass the arts into a new logo to represent CTE along with some promotional materials. To facilitate and keep a constant design throughout the state, I also created tutorials for the regional directors to help them use the new materials properly.

Project Description:

The California Arts Project (TCAP) strives to improve the K-12 education system of visual and performing arts throughout the state of California by acting as a community center for teachers.

One way TCAP helps to improve the education system is by hosting meetings and conferences for teachers and administration. Courageous Creativity Conference (CCC) is one of them. Hosted in Anaheim, CA, the Conference requires program booklets and other materials for it’s participants. Being an annual conference, every year a new design is created, this is the one I created for last year. This year is still a work in progress, but is already significantly different. Along side the booklet, nametags are used with the blue and orange color palette so that it stands out among crowds.

Professional Development Programs

• All TCAP programs are guided from the field of knowledge of the California Visual and Performing Arts Framework, The California Content Standards for the Visual and Performing Arts, and Career Technical Education Standards, The California Standards for the Teaching Profession.

• TCAP recognizes the continuum of a teacher’s development. TCAP program

designs are structured to meet the needs of the beginning teacher, the experienced teacher and/or the accomplished teacher.

• All TCAP programs engage participants in artistic processes, standards-based practice, professional reflection, and include assessment practices that lead to student achievement.

• TCAP services are available to educators, schools, districts, TCAP Partnership Schools, County Offices of Education, and others.

The California Arts Project (TCAP) is the state’s subject matter project in Visual and Performing Arts. TCAP’s central mission is to deepen teachers’ knowledge of Dance, Music, Theatre, and Visual Arts, and to enhance standards based instructional strategies for teaching these four disciplines to California’s students, pre-kindergarten through postsecondary.

What is TCAP ?

Institutes TCAP institutes are in-depth, comprehensive, discipline-based professional development experiences for educators. TCAP offers both open and invitational institute models of 80 to 120 hours for the single subject arts educator and/or the multiple subject classroom educators. The institutes formats vary with regional needs including summer and year-round schedules. All TCAP institutes involve classroom applications.

Arts Education Professional Development ProgramsTCAP designs a variety of arts education professional development programs in Music, Dance, Visual Art, and Theatre and related arts education topics. These programs are of approximately 40 hours and build upon the TCAP Program Strands of Artistic Processes, Reflection, Classroom Translations, and Leadership. Programs come in a variety of configurations to meet the needs of teachers, schools, districts, county offices, museums, and arts organizations. The programs are offered both regionally as well as on-site through a contracted service arrangement.

TCAP Arts Education Professional Development Program SeriesTCAP has a selection of on-site, contracted service series available to schools, districts, and county offices of education. These series consist of eight to ten 2 to 3 hour sessions of professional development focused on a discipline or arts education topic.

Seminars, Workshops and ConferencesTCAP regional professional development centers offer a variety of seminars, workshops and conferences consisting of 39 hours or less. These programs may be offered in collaboration with schools, districts, county offices of education, museums, or arts organizations.

Other TCAP Arts Education ServicesTCAP provides other services relating to arts education including support for assessing current arts instructional programs, developing arts education plans, strategic planning, aligning curriculum to standards, high school course development to meet UC/CSU F admissions requirement, in-class coaching, and leadership development.

NuciferaIdentity & Promotion Designs

Project Description:

Merit Food Products is an organic company that provides healthy products made out of coconut and is currently the biggest exporter of coconut products in Europe, Australasia, Middle East, and North America.

When working on a new identity, I noticed some issues with the company’s image. One of them was the company name that suggests that it has a variety of products that are merit based, but in reality it only specializes in one product. To correct this issue, I created a new name for the company so that the name fits the image more properly, and that name is: Nucifera.

Cocos Nucifera is the scientific term for coconut, and by getting rid of cocos the company can gain a sense of ambiguity and exoticness to the organic sector, but can be still be properly attached to the current products because of the scientific term.

The new logo has no other element aside from typography to make it visually recognizable, but the chosen typeface acts as a logo as it is not commonly seen. The italicized font also helps project a friendly factor. In an attempt to make the logo more descriptive of what the company does and represents, the new tag line “food for the body & mind” helps enforce the traits of the origin of the product and the company’s image.
