One piece 15” x 5” Mark: On the 15” x 5” Tone on Tone Cotton, mark a line starting 1 1/4” from the short end and at a 60° angle as shown. Mark five additional lines 1” apart.

1. Following the instructions in the Designer Diamond Specialty Technique Stitches Technique sheet, stitch the stitches on the six marked rows.

2. To make the fastener, fold a 5” x 4” piece of INSPIRA® Aqua-Magic stabilizer so there are four

layers, about 1” (2.5cm) wide. Mark a 2” line in the center.

3. Select stitch #16 and begin at the beginning of the line, but let some yarn extend back behind the foot as shown. Stitch on the line, stopping at the end of the line. Trim so there is an inch or so of yarn remaining free. Rinse out the stabilizer and allow to dry. Trim 1/4” from each end of the stitching. Set aside.

4. Place Fusible Fleece on the wrong side of the stitched fabric

piece and fuse it in place.

5. Cut 1/4” from the stitched short end, to even up that end. Then cut the fused, stitched piece down to 14” x 3 3/4”.

6. Place the template on the un-

stitched end of the piece and cut it as shown.

7. Using the cut piece, cut a

lining piece the same size.

8. On both the lining and the cut piece, mark a bottom fold line 4” from the straight end. Mark a fastener placement line 2 1/2” up from the line as shown on the outer piece.

9. Peel back the fusible fleece from the straight end and trim away 1/4” of the fleece. Fold 1/4” of the fabric to the wrong side and press.

10. Repeat for the lining.

11. Select A2:38. Place the fastener on the marked line and bartack at each end of the stitching to hold it in place.

12. Fold the outer piece on the fold line, right sides together and

keeping the 1/4” pressed under, pin.

13. Snap on your Clear 1/4” Piecing Foot w/Guide.

14. Thread with sewing thread top and bobbin.

15. Stitch the side seams.

16. Repeat for the lining.

17. Place the outer and lining pieces right

sides together and stitch from the top of the seam, up around the curve across the small straight part and back down the curve to where the seam begins as shown.

18. Trim all seam allowances to 1/8” and

clip the corners.

19. Turn through the open top.

20. Hand sew the opening closed, or insert Steam-A-Seam 2 and press with steam to fuse.

21. We sewed a bead on the end of the closure, “just cause we could”! Sew through the large bead, then the small bead, and back into the large bead.

17. Thread your Three Hole Yarn Foot with a different color yarn in each of the three

(2.5cm) wide. Stitch #16 on the Aqua-Magic. Rinse out the stabilizer and you will have a free standing cord!

1. Hoop your Sky Fabric and cotton batting in your 260mm x 200mm Designer Crown Hoop. 2. In the center of the hooped fabric, using your Pictogram

Pen, mark a rectangle 4” x 5 3/4”. 3. We are not going to hook the hoop to our embroidery

unit, so we can use it in the horizontal direction as shown.

4. Insert a size 90 INSPIRA® Topstitch needle.

5. Thread with desired thread on top in green and bobbin

thread in the bobbin. We will start with the grass, and will end up using three or four different greens, so just pick one to get started.

6. Attach your Open Toe Free Motion Spring Foot.

10. Touch the box by Free Motion Spring Action to put a in the box.

11. Select Straight Stitch A1:02 .

12. Place the hoop in the machine and check to be sure that you can move it and stitch in all four corners of the marked rectangle. Adjust the fabric in the hoop if necessary. The rectangle needs to be slightly to the right of center.

13. Remember, you are moving the fabric. Beginning in the

lower left corner, take one stitch and bring the bobbin thread up to the top. Take a couple of stitches, and then cut your thread tails, Stitch grass by moving the hoop back and forth towards you and away from you. Let the stitching go over the line a bit. Stitch across the bottom of the rectangle as shown. Curve a bit as you are stitching, so the grass is “swaying in the wind”.

14. Change to a different type and color of thread. Try some Blendables, they give very nice results.

15. Thread with a third green, and start paying attention along the bottom, to be sure that it is all filled in. On the sides, go up higher, to “frame” the edges of our meadow.

16. Thread with a fourth green, and begin to make the flower stems and leaves. Try several types. Stitch up the stem, and make a loop, for a leaf, then back up the stem a bit and another loop etc. Be sure to leave a stem at the top, for the flower to sit on.

17. Try some long skinny leaves. Think iris or tulip leaves. Try some with two colors in them.

18. Now, out to the garden you go! Look at the leaves around you and try some of your own!

19. Now, bring on the color! Thread with Flower Color. Leave your stitch at straight stitch and make some concentric ovals for petals.

20. Are you ready now, to “stitch outside the box”? You can take this to mean several things. First of all, if you want to practice, just stitch “outside” our box! We are going to cut out the rectangle when we are done, so anything outside it will be gone. But more important, we are going to use a

stitch pattern, L1:6 free motion! It’s fun, just remember, we are free motioning artwork. Not looking for perfection in the stitch. Because the feed teeth are deactivated, you are creating the length of the stitch, so it will be irregular. Practice outside our box a bit, then jump right in! Think about how the stitch starts. It starts narrow, with the small ball shape, then widens out for the large center one. Stitch one or two, and then as you begin the next one, touch to re-start the pattern.

21. Try L2:28 . Touch before you begin to sew, and after each time it stops. Begin at the bottom of one of your stems and as you go up the stem, adjust your width and length a bit smaller each time, so the “blossoms” get smaller towards the top of the stem.

22. Try M1:3 . Turn the hoop “upside down” so the grass is away from you. Start the “petal” at the end of the stem, and

be sure to touch before beginning each time. 23. When your meadow, is complete, remove the fabric from the

hoop.


27. Touch the box by Free Motion Spring Action to remove the in the box.


29. Snap on your Clear Stitch in the Ditch Foot. It will make it easy to follow the line.

30. Place heavy weight fusible interfacing behind the marked rectangle. Cut the interfacing about an inch bigger all the way around your rectangle. Fuse in place. Place Steam-A-Seam 2 on the back of the cream or white canvas. Fuse the canvas to the back of the stitched rectangle.

31. Select straight stitch #A:02 . Stitch on the marked line around your rectangle.

32. Using your rotary cutter and ruler, cut as close as possible outside the line.

33. Snap on your Clear B Edge Joining Foot.

34. Thread with matching 40 wt. rayon thread top and bobbin. This will be the “frame” for your postcard, so pick a pretty color.

35. Select A2:28 .

36. Touch . Touch the to -1.5, which is all the way to the left. Alt allows you to move the stitch from left to right instead of adjusting the stitch width.

37. Align the edge of your postcard with the flange of the foot as shown and satin stitch around the

outer edge of the postcard.

38. On the plain back, use a permanent fabric marking pen to address the postcard and write your message. At the post office, ask them to hand cancel the postcard.

39. And now, sit back and enjoy the view of the meadow!

To set your Designer Diamond for free motion: 1. Touch Start Menu . 2. Touch Set Menu . 3. Touch Sewing Settings . 4. Touch the box by either Free Motion Floating or Free Motion Spring Action to put

Free Motion Floating: Free Motion Floating allows the foot to “float” just above the surface of the fabric. When you begin sewing at a slower speed, the foot will “hop” up and down as the stitch is formed. As you stitch more quickly, the foot goes into floating mode and stays there. It is possible to adjust the height at which it is “floating” above the fabric. This is called the Pivot Height. To adjust the Pivot Height:


4. At the bottom of the screen, on the right is the pivot height adjustment . The free motion symbol is shown . The default is set at 0. Touch the to raise the foot up, further away from the fabric. Touch the to move the foot down, closer to the fabric.

5. Because fabric thickness varies, you may need to adjust the Pivot Height. If you see

the fabric “bouncing” and your thread is breaking, touch the to lower the foot. If your foot is “clamping” down too hard on the fabric making it difficult to move, touch the to raise it up giving the fabric more clearance to move.

Free Motion Spring Action: Free Motion Spring Action allows the foot to hold the fabric taut as the stitch is being formed and rise up after the stitch has been made. You will find that the Pivot Height is not active when Free Motion Spring Action has been chosen because it is not applicable. Which to Use? The choice to use Floating or Spring Action is largely a personal choice when doing basic free motion stitching.

• The “R” Foot is the basic free motion foot that comes with your Designer Diamond. • The Clear Open Toe Free Motion Foot is an optional accessory that is very useful

when the floating position is desired and you need to follow a line. The open toe in the front gives the best visibility.

• The Free Motion Guide Foot has a grid, making it easy to do echo quilting. The large surface of the foot keeps the fabric down, out of the way of the needle when using a “puffy” batting.

• The Yarn Couching Feet are specialty feet for couching yarn.

• The Sensor Q Foot is useful when working on thick, fabrics or layers of fabrics. The

spring action holds the fabric taut as the stitch is being formed. The Sensor Q Foot is designed to be used either in free motion sewing or in embroidery.

• The Open Toe Spring Foot is used the same as the Sensor Q Foot, but is open in the

front making it easier to see. Let’s Sew:

1. Insert a size 90 INSPIRA® Quilting Needle.

2. Thread with cotton thread top and bobbin.

3. Make a “quilt sandwich” from two layers of cotton fabric with batting between them.

4. Snap on your “R” Foot.

5. Touch Start Menu .

8. Touch the box by Free Motion Floating to put a in the box.

10. When sewing free motion, you are moving the fabric. Run the machine moderately fast. You may want to touch the

Practice loops and even write your name! You are controlling the stitch length by how you move the fabric. Practice for consistent movement of the fabric and speed of the machine.

24. Hoop your 22” square of linen in the lower left hand corner, as close to the edge of the fabric as possible.

25. Embroider the first color.

26. Following the instructions in the Designer Diamond Technique Studio #23 Step by Step, embroider the

cutwork design. Follow the tips below for this combined design:

• Before beginning to embroider, bring up the bobbin thread tail but taking one full stitch. After

your embroidery stitches a few stitches, touch and trim the thread tails. • After the first color is stitched, remove the hoop from your Designer Diamond and “clean up”

the back. Clip all the bobbin threads that have carried across the design. Do this after each design.

• After color 6 when the first center design is complete, stop, remove the hoop and take out the

basting. Trim the extra Aqua-Magic Stabilizer away.

• Repeat after each of the other corner designs. Sew:

1. Remove the fabric from the hoop. 2. Trim away the excess Aqua-Magic outside the designs. 3. Using your Pictogram Pen, begin in the corner where the embroidery is and mark a line 1 1/4” from the edge. Repeat on both edges that adjoin the embroidery.

4. Beginning at the corner where the embroidery is, mark on the line every 1 1/4” as shown.

5. Continue the markings around the other two sides.

6. Remain threaded with matching 40 wt. Robison Anton rayon thread top and bobbin.

7. Touch to toggle to Sewing.


9. Touch the Scallop Menu.

10. Touch , then select H2:35 .

11. Cut a strip of INSPIRA® Aqua-Magic Stabilizer 22” x 3” in half lengthwise. Place under the fabric edge.

12. Touch . Beginning stitching on one of your marks at the corner. Be sure that you end on your

marked line. Touch and stitch the next scallop. Repeat, touching after each stitch is completed. While this is a bit tedious, it will result in perfect spacing.

13. Select H2:2 . Adjust the stitch length to 40.0 and the stitch width to 11.0.

14. Carefully, trim the linen away from the outside of the stitching. Leave the stabilizer intact.

15. Stitch slowly, and touch after each stitch repeat. The stitching will stitch over the straight stitching and the cut edge.

16. When your stitching is complete, carefully, put fray blocking liquid over the cut edge in the corner. Be

careful not to get it on the stabilizer, as it will prevent it from washing away. Just put a drop on the corner of the linen. Allow to dry.

17. Rinse out the stabilizer in warm water.

18. Now, get baking those rolls to go in your basket!

Designer Diamond Technique Step by Step #23 Designer Cutwork Cutwork on your Husqvarna Viking Designer Diamond can be done two different ways. The first, is to cut out the area, using your small scissors that came with your Designer Diamond. The Second is to use Cutwork Needles. You can only use the cutwork needles on designs that were digitized for use with the Cutwork Needles. Traditional Cutwork: Traditional cutwork designs use these symbols to indicate that they are cutwork designs.

The first symbol is showing that the area to be cut will first be stitches. The second is showing the fabric being cut. The third is showing the cut area, satin stitched. Heavy Weight water soluble stabilizer such as INSPIRA® Aqua-Magic is the preferred stabilizer. Your Designer Diamond has two cutwork designs. They are 40 and 95. On the Classic Collection CD, there are also these cutwork designs, 28, 29, 104, 105, 107 and 108.

15. Color 4 satin stitches the right side of the design and straight stitches the areas to be cut in the center.

16. Color 5 completes the satin stitching.

Cutwork Using the Cutwork Needles: There are four needles in each Husqvarna Viking® Embroidery Cutwork Needle Kit. The needles are color coded #1 red, #2 yellow, #3 green and #4 blue. The embroidery designs you use with INSPIRA® Cutwork Needles must be digitized for use with the needles. You cannot use them with cutwork designs that have not been digitized for INSPIRA® Cutwork Needles. This symbol will be on the embroidery package or download page telling you that it has been digitized for use with these needles. Fabrics: Most fabrics that are suitable for traditional cutwork will work with the Embroidery Cutwork Needle Kit. The ideal fabric is a woven, natural fiber fabric such as cotton or linen. Knits work well, if stabilized. See “Fabric Preparation” below for details. Try stitching a sample embroidery before starting on your actual project. On some fabrics, the needles may snag the fabric as they cut. The needles will last a long time depending on the fabric used and other factors, especially when used with natural fiber fabrics. Individual replacement needles are available if one gets damaged or dull. The part number #620 09 01-96 is for a replacement package containing the four different needles. The part number #920268-096 is for the Embroidery Cutwork Needle Kit which contains needles, CD with instruction movie and 5 designs, Multi Purpose Tool and instruction to get you started. Fabric Preparation for stretch fabric: Any fabric that stretches needs to be stabilized before beginning your embroidery. This includes any fabrics like T-Shirt Knit, as well as fabrics like Denim which have a certain amount of give, due to the way it is woven. Any fabric with lycra® in it needs to be stabilized. To stabilize the fabric:

1. Place the “glue” side of INSPIRA® Light & Soft Fuse-On stabilizer on the wrong side of the fabric. 2. Press with a dry iron to fuse in place.

Hooping:

1. Select the hoop appropriate for the size of the embroidery design. 2. Select the appropriate INSPIRA® Stabilizer for the design and fabric. Heavy weight water soluble

stabilizer is the best choice for most cutwork. It disappears completely from the back of the fabric. Cut-Away for knits or a Tear-A-Way for wovens can also be used. Hoop the stabilizer with your fabric. The first stabilizer used will be cut cleanly away by the Cutwork Needles. The final stabilizer used, after the cutwork needles cut the fabric should be water soluble so it does not leave any “frizzy” edges sticking out of the satin stitching.

3. Slide your hoop onto your embroidery unit. Stitching:

1. For an even better result it is recommended that you use the Straight Stitch Plate and Sensor Q Foot when stitching designs with INSPIRA® Cutwork Needles. The straight stitch plate gives better support during stitching and gives a more distinct cut and improved results, especially on fabric with high fiber strength.

2. Use the hole in the Multi Purpose Tool to insert the needle.

Symbols: There are some new symbols that you will see in the cutwork design booklets.

1. This is the symbol you will see indicating the design has been digitized for Cutwork Needles.

2. This symbol indicates that water soluble stabilizer is required.

3. This symbol indicates that this color will stitch the outline of the areas to be cut.

4. This symbol indicates that now is the time to cut inside the stitched area if you are not using INSPIRA® Cutwork Needles. (For some particularly delicate fabrics, you may want to trim the fabric manually. Test the design on your fabric first to assure the best results.)

5. Needle #1 is color coded red, #2 is color coded yellow, #3 is color coded green and #4 is color coded blue.

6. This symbol indicates that INSPIRA® Cutwork Needle is to be inserted now. The color indicates which needle to use.

7. Only two needles may be used, or all four may be used depending on the design. The instructions will

tell you which ones to use throughout the design.

8. This symbol indicates it is time to add INSPIRA® Aqua Magic Water Soluble Stabilizer underneath. Slide one layer of Aqua Magic Stabilizer underneath the embroidery hoop. The bobbin thread is attached, so be sure it is pushed out of the way to allow the stabilizer to lay flat.

9. This symbol indicates it is time to trim any remaining threads and remove the cut fabric. (Note that there is one color change stitched after the fabric is cut, BEFORE you remove the cut pieces. This is to stitch the cut area to the new stabilizer, before the cut pieces are removed.)

10. This symbol indicates you are to finish your embroidery.

11. This symbol reminds you to clean the bobbin area after each embroidery design.

Color 3. Even though the areas are now cut, don’t remove the cut fabric yet.

23. Replace your regular needle. Thread with color 4,

Robison Anton 40 wt. #2300. Slide an additional piece of INSPIIRA® Aqua-Magic Stabilizer underneath the hoop. Stitch color 4 which will baste the stabilizer in place.

24. Stitch color 5. This color stabilizes the cutwork areas by stitching around the outside, and stitching the

open area to the new stabilizer.

10. Hem the two short ends. Set aside.

11. Apply fray blocking liquid to the inside of each of the petals in the border. Allow to dry.

12. Using your Ultra Pro Seam Ripper, cut the thread velvet flowers, and cut the inside of the petals on the

border where you applied the fray blocking liquid.

13. Snap on your Edge Stitching Foot.


15. Place the embroidered bag front and bag back right sides together. Stitch the sides and bottom aligning the flange on the foot with the edge of the fabric.

16. Bring the bottom and side seam together forming a triangle and

measure and mark 2” from the point as shown.

17. Stitch on the line, boxing the bottom of the bag.

18. Trim off the excess fabric from the triangles.

19. Place the lining pieces right sides together.

20. Stitch the sides and bottom leaving a 4” opening in the side to turn.

21. Box the bottom as you did on the outer bag. Using a sleeve board, press the side seams on the bag and lining open.

22. Place the bag inside the lining, right sides together.

23. Stitch around the bag top, aligning the edge of the fabric with the flange of the foot. This will give you a

seam allowance of just under 1/2”.

24. Turn through the opening.

25. Because the lining is cut longer than the outer bag, the lining will come to the front of the bag forming a band. Press the top of the bag, forming the band.

26. Snap on your Clear Stitch in the Ditch Foot.

27. Stitch in the ditch of the seam, around the top of the bag, through all the layers. 28. Snap on your Clear 1/4” Piecing Foot w/Guide.

29. Cut the 2 1/2” x width of fabric into two pieces equaling 2 1/2” x 22”.

30. Fold right sides together and stitch the long edge of each.

31. Using your Fasturn Tube Turner, place the stitched tube over the

tube and finger press the seam open as shown.

32. Twist the wire into place. Begin turning the tube so there is approximately 3/4” – 1” of fabric into the tube. Place the piece of

“fat” batting in the opening and continue turning. The batting will be pulled into the tube as it goes through.

33. Snap on your Clear View S Foot.

34. Adjust the batting inside the handles so that there is no batting in the last 1” on each end. Trim away

some of the batting if necessary. Fold under 1/4” to the inside on each end and press.

35. Pin the handles 2” in from the side seams and overlapping the

top band by approximately 1/2” so there is 1” of handle on the bag.

36. Select , S1:1 . This is a directional stitch. To change

the direction your Designer Diamond will sew, touch . The red line indicating the direction you will sew changes. Stitch a square around the end of the handles.

1. Cut your stitched and embroidered strips 1/2” from the embroidery on each side and 15” long. 2. The embroidered strips will be nicely centered on the ends. The stitched ones you will have to cut

through the stitching. That’s fine.

3. Read through the joining instructions before going any further. That way you can lay out your strips and decide how you would like to join them together. We added some solid strips to make up the needed 15” width and to set off the stitched and embroidered strips.

Join the Strips: Jumbo Rick Rack:

1. Touch to toggle to sewing mode. 2. Thread with sewing thread top and bobbin.

3. Snap on your Clear A Edge Joining Foot.

10. Thread with invisible thread on top and sewing thread in the bobbin. Refer to your Accessory User’s

Guide for the correct stitch to use with the foot you have chosen for your beads.

11. Stitch the beads in place over the seam beginning and ending 1/2” from each end to keep the beads out

of the seam allowance. Finish your Pillow:

1. Join sufficient strips to achieve a 15” square. 2. Trim using your rotary cutter and ruler to even up the square.

Designer Diamond Technique Step by Step #25 Omnimotion Stitches Omnimotion Stitches are sideways feed stitches that enable you to make stitches up to 54.6mm wide instead of the standard 7mm stitch width.

Your Omnimotion stitches are in menu . Some of the Omnimotion stitches, are designed to stitch

only once and have a programmed into them. You can tell which ones they are because they come up as a

single design, not a row of designs, and the is lit. Omnimotion stitches need to be sewn with either the S foot or the Clear View S-Foot (#412975145). These feet are very wide, and will enable your Designer Diamond to feed properly. Omnimotion stitches are suitable for sewing on a strip of fabric that will then be inserted into a quilt or garment. They can be sewn on a garment, for example down a blouse front, provided the garment is relatively light weight and there are no seams or linings that will be in the area where the stitching will be. Omnimotion stitches are NOT suitable on bulky items such as finished quilts or quilt tops, or jackets with linings etc. If you want to use Omnimotion stitches on larger items, sew them in embroidery mode, which supports the bulk of the fabric and enables them to feed accurately because of the embroidery arm.

Omnimotion Stitches in Sewing Mode: 1. When sewing one of the Omnimotion stitches in sewing mode, begin by marking a line, using your

Pictogram Pen, down the strip of fabric where it will be sewn. The beginning point of a design is not necessarily the center. If you look at our leaf design which we will stitch first, you will see the black dot indicating the start point of the design is to the right of center. Cut your strip of fabric wider than the finished project will require so you can re-cut the strip of fabric after the stitching is complete, centering the stitching.

10. Place fusible fleece to the back of one of the multicolor 20” x 24” pieces and fuse in

place.

11. Place the two multicolor pieces right sides together and stitch all the way around leaving a 6” opening to turn.


13. Hand stitch the opening closed.

14. Cut the embroidered word panel down to 2 ¾” x 15”.

15. Press Steam-A-Seam™ 2 to the back of the word panel.

16. Place on the 20” x 24” multicolor piece that does NOT have fleece fused to it 1 ½”

down from the top, centered from side to side.

17. Press with steam to fuse in place.

18. Following the instructions from Designer Diamond™ Technique Studio #26 stitch in

place using F1:7 or F1:8 .

19. Place the two 20” x 24” pieces right sides together. Stitch all the way around leaving a 6” opening to turn.

20. Clip the corners, turn, press.

21. Hand stitch the opening closed.

22. Pin the pockets as desired onto the base fabric. Place them below the words.

23. Attach your Interchangeable Dual Feed and snap on the Changeable ¼” Guide

Foot.

24. Stitch the pockets in place leaving the top of each one open, letting the flange on the foot follow the edge of the pocket.

25. Mark between the hearts on the long pockets.

26. Snap on the Changeable Quilter’s Guide Foot.

27. Stitch on the lines, letting the flange in the center of the foot follow the lines.

Designer Diamond™ Technique Step by Step #26 F Menu Appliqué Stitches F1 Appliqué Stitches Menu has a variety of stitches designed to do different types of appliqué. Some of the stitches are there as a convenience, such as the straight and zig zag stitches so that you can combine or choose them without going back to the A Menu. F9 is a decorative buttonhole you might like to use on your appliqué projects. Satin Stitch Appliqué:

F1:3 , F1:4 and F1:5 are satin stitches. They are formed differently than a standard zig zag. One stitch goes from left to right, then the next stitch “travels”. A regular zig zag “travels” on every stitch and isn’t as “satiny” looking.

1. Using our template, cut out a heart from cotton print. The heart is the perfect shape to practice appliqué because it has inside and outside corners, and curves.

2. Place the cut heart on a piece of plain cotton. Pin or hold in place with Temporary Spray Adhesive.

3. Place INSPIRA® Tear-A-Way Stabilizer underneath the fabric.

4. Select F1:4 . Be sure your Sewing Advisor® is set to Woven Medium .

5. Thread with 40 wt. Robison Anton rayon thread on top and bobbin thread in the bobbin.

6. Snap on your Clear B Foot.

7. Align the fabric so that you are beginning at the point of the

heart. Most of the stitch should be on the heart. The right swing of the needle should just go off the right hand edge of the heart as shown. The fabric needs to feed by itself, so you should not be helping it at all. The stitches should lay one right next to the other without space between them, and without overlapping. If necessary, adjust the stitch length one notch at a time until you have a nice stitch.

8. As you approach the curve, sew slowly and move the fabric

steadily and continuously around the curved area. This will result in nice, smooth stitching.

9. Stitch approximately ¼” past the inside corner at the top center of the heart. Touch Needle Stop

Down . The needle needs to stop on the left. Tap your foot control to move the needle to the left, if it has stopped in the right hand position.

10. Your needle is now down in the fabric and the presser foot is floating just

above the fabric in Pivot position. Turn the fabric 90° so you are ready to start up the next side. You will begin by going over the end of the previous stitching.

11. At the end, stitch over the beginning stitches to the point of the heart and

touch . This will tie off the stitches so they don’t unravel.

12. Select F1:13 .

13. Touch . 14. Using the techniques you just learned, stitch around another heart using this

“grass” satin stitch.

15. Using the same techniques, stitch around another heart using F1:14 . This stitch has texture on both sides of the stitch.

16. The last heart will be stitched with F1:20 . This stitch is a bit trickier. It stitches back and forth several times. When you reach the inside top corner, stop, and touch Stitch Restart . Pivot the fabric, and begin stitching down the other side.

Hand Look Applique: Hand Look Applique was originally done by hand, turning under the raw edges of the fabric and blind stitching the shape in place. Sometimes a heavier contrasting thread was used and a blanket stitch was used instead of the invisible blind stitch.

F1:11 , F1:12 , F1:15 , F1:17 , F1:18 and F1:19 can all be used for hand look appliqué. To do Handlook Applique, the edges of the fabric need to be finished in some manner. One method is to place a fusible web such as Steam-A-Seam 2 on the back of the fabric, and fuse the appliqué shape in place. This prevents the raw edges of the fabric from fraying. Another method that we will use is to trace the appliqué shape onto a light weight interfacing.

1. Begin by tracing four heart shapes onto a light weight fusible interfacing.

2. Place the traced interfacing onto the right side of print fabric.

3. Select F1:1 , straight stitch. Stitch around the heart shape.

4. Repeat for all four hearts.

5. Trim around the hearts using your Pinking Shears. This will “grade” the curves quickly and easily. Clip into the inside corner.

6. Trim out the center of the heart so that there

approximately ⅜” of interfacing left.

7. Turn and press so that the interfacing is not showing on the right side of the heart.

8. You now have four hearts with finished edges. Doing it this way keeps the fabric soft and flexible. Fusing the hearts in place can leave them stiff.

9. Pin them onto a background fabric.

10. Select F1:11 .

11. Thread with smoke colored invisible thread on top and bobbin thread in the bobbin.

12. Place INSPIRA® Tear-A-Way Stabilizer underneath the fabric.

13. Stitch around the heart. The straight stitch portion of the stitch should be on the base fabric and only

the left swing of the needle should come over onto the heart shape, forming a “pick” stitch.

14. Select F1:15 . This stitch is very similar to F1:11. The difference is that F1:11 has two stitches in between the “pick” stitch. This one has only one.

15. Stitch around the next heart. Compare the two and decide which one

you like best.

16. Select F1:17 .

17. On the top, thread with sewing thread to match the background color of your heart and bobbin thread in the bobbin.

18. Stitch around the next heart. The stitches should just sew off the edge of

the heart, with most of the stitching being on the heart. This stitch is very secure and gives just a hint of an outline to the heart. It would be a good choice on a baby blanket that would be washed a lot.

19. Select F1:18 . With sewing thread still in place, stitch around the last heart. This stitch has a defined outline stitch that will stitch just outside the heart, framing it nicely.

20. Trace the large heart on lightweight sew-in interfacing.

21. Place the heart right sides together onto the print fabric.

22. Select F1:1 , straight stitch. Stitch around the heart shape.

23. Trim as before, turn and press.

24. Place on a base fabric with INSPIRA® Tear-A-Way stabilizer underneath.

25. Thread with a contrasting 40 wt. rayon thread on top and bobbin thread in the bobbin.

26. This stitch recommends a wing needle . This makes a very pretty appliqué for an heirloom project. You can stitch with a wing needle or with a regular needle. Stitch around the heart. The stitch goes back and forth several times resulting in a heavier blanket stitch look.

Tapered Satin Stitch Applique:

1. Stitches F1:6 and F1:16 give you a nice tapered point. While these two options are the most often used, you have more options.

2. Select F1:6 . Adjust the Stitch Width to 6.0.

3. On the paper side that does not remove easily, trace two large hearts onto Steam-A-Seam™ 2. 4. Remove the un-traced paper side.

5. Place the traced hearts on the wrong side of the heart fabric.

6. Press lightly without steam.

7. Cut out on the marked lines.

8. Remove the paper backing.

9. Place on base fabric and press with steam to fuse in place.

10. Thread with 40 wt. rayon embroidery thread on top and bobbin

thread in the bobbin.

11. Touch . The tapering menu will open. 12. Our heart point is a 45° angle. So we will choose Begin Taper

45° right justified. Choose End taper 45° right justified as shown.

13. Begin stitching at the point of the heart. Stitch around the edge, pivoting as before at the inner corner.

14. As you approach the beginning point, when the left swing of the

needle meets the beginning taper, touch the Reverse Button . Stitch until your Designer Diamond™ stops. You now have a nicely mitered point on your heart.

15. F1:7 and F1:8 are decorative stitches that can be used as appliqué stitches. Cut a square and place it on a base fabric. Choose

F1:8 .

16. Thread with 40 wt. rayon thread on top and bobbin thread in the bobbin. Place INSPIRA® Tear-A-Way stabilizer underneath the fabric. Stitch so one square is on the fabric and one is off the fabric. The raw edge will be down the center of the stitch.

17. On another square, touch F1:7 .

18. Touch .

19. Stitch so that the straight edge of the stitch is just off the raw edge of the fabric.

20. On a third square, select stitch F1:12 .

21. Adjust the stitch length to 5.0 and the stitch width to 7.0.

22. Stitch so that the right swing of the needle just goes off the edge of the appliqué fabric. This gives the effect of a blanket stitch, but the narrow satin stitch finishes the raw edge of the fabric.

Make these eclectic fingertip towels and learn all about the scallop stitch menu on your Designer Diamond™ sewing & embroidery machine. While we used linen, and made our own guest towels, you could also use more family friendly terry towels and do the same thing. Sewing Supplies:

1. Following the instructions in the Omnimotion Scallop section of the

Designer Diamond™ Technique Studio #27, Stitch scallops on two strips per towel. Be sure to have INSPIRA® Tear-A-Way Stabilizer underneath the fabric as you stitch.

2. Apply Fray Blocking Liquid to the stitching and allow to dry.

3. Trim the strips.

4. Following the instructions in the Smaller Satin Stitch Scallop section of the

Designer Diamond™ Technique Studio #27, stitch on one strip per towel.

5. Be sure to have INSPIRA® Tear-A-Way Stabilizer underneath the fabric as you stitch.

6. Apply Fray Blocking Liquid to the stitching and allow it to dry.

7. Trim the strips.

8. On the 4” x 20” strip of cotton, fold in half, right sides together, lengthwise,

and stitch straight stitch scallops either H2:34 or H2:35. Trim, turn and press.

9. Set your Huskylock™ s25 Serger for stitch #3, 4-thread overlock.

10. Serge the top raw long edge of all the scalloped strips.

11. Serge the two short ends on each strip.

12. Serge one short edge of the 27” x 20” linen. This will be the bottom of the

towel.

13. Snap on your 10mm Hemmer and “A” Foot.

14. Thread with cotton sewing thread top and bobbin.

15. Stitch a 10mm hem on the two long sides and short raw edge.

16. To make the top decorative double scalloped edge, cut a 3” x 20” strip of

linen. Using your Pictogram™ Pen, mark a line down the center of the strip.

17. On your Designer Diamond™ sewing & embroidery machine, select

H2:31 .

18. Thread with 40 wt. rayon embroidery thread on top and bobbin thread in the bobbin.

19. Snap on your Clear B Foot.

20. Place INSPIRA® Tear-A-Way Stabilizer underneath the fabric. Align the left

side of your foot with the marked line. Stitch.

21. Turn the fabric, and again align the left side of your fabric with the marked

line. Touch Pattern Restart . Be sure you are starting in the same place as the first row, so that the scallops will “match”. Stitch the second row.

22. Select H2:28 . 23. Stitch down the center of the strip.

24. Apply Fray Blocking Liquid along the edge of each row of scallops. Allow to

dry. 25. Trim up to the scallops. 26. Thread with sewing thread top and bobbin.

27. Select A1:2 . 28. Arrange your scallop strips along the bottom (serged) edge of the towel.

After you are happy with your arrangement, remove all but the bottom one. Pin the bottom one in place, folding the short ends to the wrong side, to match the hemmed towel edges.

29. Stitch along the serged top edge.

30. Place the next strip overlapping the serged edge of the previous strip by

approximately ½”. Stitch in place.

31. Repeat, until all strips are in place.

32. Thread with sewing thread on top to match the double edged scallop trim.

33. Place the trim over the serged edge of the top strip. Turn under the short ends.

34. Stitch in place on each side of the center stitching.

Designer Diamond™ Technique Step by Step #27 H Menu Scallop Stitches The H menus (1, 2 and 3) have a variety of different scallop stitches with many different uses and techniques.

Some are Omnimotion stitches, some are satin stitches and some are straight stitches. Omnimotion Scallop Stitches H1:1 through H1:15, H1:17 and H1:18 are all Omnimotion Stitches. That means that they feed sideways as well as backwards and forwards. These stitches can be used to finish an edge, and can be trimmed up to.

1. Thread with 40 wt. rayon thread top and bobbin.

2. Snap on your S Foot.

3. Cut a strip of fabric 3” x 20”.

4. Using your Pictogram™ Pen, mark a line down the center of it.

5. Select the stitch of your choice, from H1:1 through H1:15, H1:17 and H1:18.

6. Touch .

7. Align the center red mark on the foot with the marked line on the fabric.

8. Stitch the first repeat. The stitch should finish with

the center red line on the foot, even with the marked line. If it isn’t on the line, adjust as necessary.

9. Apply Fray Blocking liquid just below the stitching so

it will “seep” into the edge of the thread.

10. Allow to dry.

11. Trim carefully, just outside the stitching line. Smaller Satin Stitch Scallop Stitches: H1:16, H2:19 to H2:33 and H2:36 are all smaller satin stitch scallop stitches. These stitches can be used to finish an edge, and can be trimmed up to.

1. Snap on your B Foot. 2. Remain threaded with 40 wt. rayon thread on top and bobbin thread in the bobbin.

3. On another 3” x 20” strip, using your Pictogram™ Pen, mark a line down the center.

4. Align the red mark on your B Foot with the marked line and stitch the stitch of your choice down the

strip. Keep the red mark on the foot aligned with the marked line as you sew.

5. Apply Fray Blocking liquid just below the stitching so it will “seep” into the edge of the thread.

6. Allow to dry.

7. Trim carefully, just outside the stitching line. Straight Stitch Scallops:

1. H2:34 and H2:35 are straight stitch scallops. They will give you a turned, finished edge.

2. Cut a strip of cotton 4” x 20”.

3. Fold in half lengthwise, right sides together.

4. Select either H2:34 or H2:35. Note the presser foot called for on the Ultimate Interactive Screen.


6. Align the edge of the foot with the fold in the fabric.

7. Stitch the length of the strip.

8. Trim approximately ⅛” from the stitching.

9. Clip into the points, turn and press.

10. The remaining stitches on the H3 menu are decorative scallop stitches and are not designed to finish an

edge. They are used like any other decorative stitch.
