The move from individualism to communalism was the theme of yesterday’s designEX press conference held at Sydney’s Park Hyatt hotel.

designEX 2014 keynote speaker, international trend forecaster Li Edelkoort, gave a taste of her keynote speech to be held at 11:00 this morning titled “Embryonic Architecture: The dawning of a new age.”

Li said we are in a unique period where the entire spectrum of design is being influenced by a single trend – the move from individualism towards community.

“Individualism is dead,” said Li, “there is a need for people to meet together, to congregate together and to work together.

“Right now we are in a happy waiting time – waiting for the renaissance of society after a long and painful period during

the twentieth century where people were very fearful – we have been through economic and environmental crisis. Now I’m convinced this will end and we will enter a period of community.”

“In this period of gestation, we are in a very happy atmosphere where things are embracing us – building, clothes and design is there to cuddle us, guide us and restore us. There is also a tremendous comeback of textiles and we are thinking of textiles in a bigger way,” she said.

Many of the upcoming trends that were discussed during the press conference can be seen throughout designEX, with the abundance of textile exhibitors, designer collaborations and the entire third day of the speaker series focusing on collaboration for health and well being.

Moleskine and designEX have partnered to provide a unique opportunity for both architects and designers to showcase their sketching talents and have these sketches as the cover of a limited edition Moleskine notebook, available exclusively at designEX 2014.

With over 150 entries, the winners come from a range of design and architectural disciplines. The winners are Edward Cornista with his architectural sketch, Eric Ng depicting an owl in flight and Chloe Ferres’ statement, Modus Operandi.

Using social media, the sketches have been shared using the hashtag #dexmoleskine. The results were an intimate look into the creative process of the architect and designer and a celebration of the perennial power of freehand sketching even in the age of AutoCAD.

A jury from Moleskine’s design team in Italy judged the competition entries with three winning sketches being selected to form the basis of the limited edition notebooks. With an array of impressive sketches submitted to the competition, it was certainly a tough decision for the judges.

You can see all of the entries at the Moleskine Competition Gallery at Stand 197 in Hall 3, and the winners presentation will take place here at 1pm today. Don’t miss it!

As the city of Copenhagen celebrates the one-hundredth anniversary of the birth of one of its most famous sons, designEX together with Corporate Culture/Cult and Carl Hansen & Son also acknowledge the enduring legacy of the great chair master Hans Wegner, in Carl Hansen & Son Café by Cult designed by leading Sydney based interior architect, George Livissianis. In order to mark the occasion, CEO of Carl Hansen & Son, Knud Erik Hansen, will be attending designEX, courtesy of Corporate Culture and hosting a special presentation to discuss this iconic designer, his work and his ongoing influence in furniture design. Join Knud Erik Hansen, Richard Munao, Managing Director of Corporate Culture and George Livissianis as they speak with design writer Penny Craswell about authentic design and the changing face of furniture and interiors. 2:30pm Friday 30th May at Carl Hansen & Son Café by Cult, designEX. Carl Hansen & Son as a brand is probably best known for their pieces designed by Danish master Hans Wegner, which continue to be best sellers, while the company itself has grown 15 times what it was since 2002. The Wegner Wishbone chair is still their number one chair worldwide, with other pieces by the designer put into production according to contemporary tastes.

THE BEST OF THE NEST

Why did Taubmans select Arent&Pyke?Taubmans selected Arent&Pyke because they’re well-respected experts and we believe their philosophy on colour is a great match in bringing our extensive colour offering to life in a way that enables visitors to designEX to experience colour like never before.

What was the brief? Our brief to Arent&Pyke was very open to their interpretation, and that’s the way we wanted it so that we could truly make the most of their vast creativity. We challenged them to design a stand around the theme ‘Experience Colour’ and to draw inspiration from our new colour centre, Taubmans Colour Galaxy™ – a state-of-the-art online colour tool.

What is the best way to experience the stand? We’re encouraging all visitors to designEX to visit the Taubmans colour wall, and to get up close and immerse themselves in the colour experience. It’s a very tactile stand where guests can look up, down, around, choose their favourite colours and share a photo of their reflection in the mirrored wall with us on Twitter @taubmanspro.How did you create the brushout wall? The stand features a huge blade wall of painted brushouts that celebrate Taubmans’ colour offering. It is a feathered gradation of colour with close to 1,000 A4 painted brushouts. Where the walls are not covered in brushouts they are either black or mirrored surfaces, creating an immersive and reflective contrast to the intensity of coloured surface.

How does Taubmans see the future of Australian design? In terms of colour, we see Australian design becoming bolder, braver and more confident. It’s something we’re starting to see more and more, and we hope that this creative example of Taubmans’ vast colours range will help to encourage and support the industry in embracing colour.
