What is the future of the printing industry in general and Indian printing industry in particular?

ashokan: Beyond doubt, the future is bright for the global printing industry. Believe me, for Indian printing industry also, the future is safe and bright. Growing economy, 65 percent youth population, strong fundamentals, new-gen aspirations – all these shall contribute in overall growth in coming years. Though, pattern, format and methods will evolve as per market needs.

Tushar: Future is always bright for whatever industry we may be in, it is the way we look at it and the perspective makes all the difference. Printing is no different. We need to evolve ourselves and change with the times. Technology is changing rapidly and so we need to adopt it by constantly training and updating our knowledge in business. The quick learner with equally good management skills will be the winner. I believe there is a huge amount of potential in print business. Though digital is growing, offset print too is growing.

What according to you are the strengths and weaknesses of the Indian printing industry?

ashokan: The Indian printing industry is thriving on following strengths: quick learners, overall flexible approach and urge to grow. But, there are a few weaknesses as well, which include lack of patience, lack of skilled man-power and low or no risk options by printers.

Tushar: The Indian printer is very smart and intelligent. The new generation of contemporary printers is on the rise; they are focused and decision makers and this is what will change the future of our printing industry. The strength of the Indian printers is innovation, though there is limitation in terms of infrastructure and manpower.

The weakness of the Indian printer is that he is not well trained, lacks motivation and financial ability to study technology or adopt it in his business. I truly understand that there is a serious gap in the funding available to the SME sector, but a good project with a proper study in terms of ROI and technology change, keeping a futuristic view, is necessary for investment. A proper business development plan is necessary. There can be small group clusters formed with the help of friends and like-minded players in this industry to attract bigger investment for newer technologies. I believe it can be done.

What is the total expanse of the fair? Are these sync with your targets? Why/Why not?

ashokan: From the day we started, our motto was ‘Think big – dream big’. Six months prior to D-day of 9th December we were not up to the mark. Rethinking, brainstorming and suitable actions yielded results.

Tushar: We have sold 7500+ sq m and over 250 exhibitors at PAMEX 2015. Our target though was 8000 sq m but because of some last minute cancellations for equipment not reaching or in high sea and of course the deluge in Chennai, meant a lot of cancellation at the last moment.

What new can the exhibitors/visitors expect at the fair?ashokan: Refreshing venue, hi-tech systems in place, perfect floor

plan, attractive stall designs and above all, world class exhibitors, shall open the gates to ‘future of print’. Every visitor will return home with some degree of satisfaction and I mean it.

Tushar: We do foresee a good growth in the packaging, converting and labels in the coming years, so this time we have a theme of four verticals: Commercial and Digital printing; Package converting; Narrow web; and Corrugation packaging. There are a lot of live demos of machineries at the exhibition. HP is displaying the Indigo 10000 and Insight Communications will be running Komori 37 live. Autoprint, Line O Matic, Canon, Ricoh and Xerox – all of them have new launches. There is a lot of activity in the software section with EFI and Bodhi, etc having new launches. There are exhibitors for all levels i.e. the micro, medium and large printers.

PAMEX opens doors to the future of print! Here, AMSG Ashokan, IPP - AIFMP, chairman - PAMEX and Tushar Dhote, co-chairman - PAMEX share their views on the printing industry and the ongoing PAMEX 2015 show.

How many visitors are you expecting at the show and from which

areas?ashokan: The efforts put in by

PAMEX Team have already assured first six digit. It will be interesting to see how further we can go. Am optimistic, it will be an all time high footfall among all print exhibitions

held so far in India. We are expecting pan India attendance dominated by

Western and Southern part of India. Maximum city, the dream city – Mumbai,

the host city, has its own charm which is boon in disguise for us as far as attracting footfall.

Tushar: We are expecting visitors from all over India. We have specially done 14 roadshows at the Grassroot level in Maharashtra and around six roadshows in Tamil Nadu and South India. We are also expecting a good

crowd from the tier 2 and tier 3 cities.

What other efforts are taken by the organisers to make it a best-in-class show?

ashokan: Nothing has been left to chance. Presence on social media, mobile app, maximum possible use of technology, signage and other aspects which are important from the point of view of a common visitor all have been taken care of.

Tushar: PAMEX brand never had a problem. On becoming the co-chairman of PAMEX 2015, one thing which I did was, not to negotiate the rate and offerings and tried to build back the confidence among the exhibitors, quoting them the success of the PAMEX 2006 held in Mumbai. Both MMS and BMPA are offering their local support to the PAMEX.

Moreover, we created core teams among the distributors and manufacturers and held meetings in Mumbai and Delhi to understand what they needed differently this time. PAMEX promotions through roadshows at the Grassroot level in Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu have been very well accepted and media promotions such as bus panels, jingles and hoardings, etc have been done at strategic positions.

Any message for printing fraternity....ashokan: A must visit event to witness, experience, feel and be a

part of the vision of our honourable prime minister Narendra Modi ‘Sab Ka Saath, Sab Ka Vikas’, ‘Make in India’, ‘Digital India’.

Tushar: My message for my friends in the print fraternity is very simple – we need to stick to the basics and develop a long term plan which will be based on a sound research on technology and a proper ROI for the investment. I believe there is a big scope for print in packaging and digital in newer forms of printing. Please do not compete on rate alone, as it is a killing factor. A proper business development plan is very much necessary to remain profitable.

Mobile App for PAMEXFor the benefit of exhibitors and visitors, a mobile app for PAMEX has also been developed. One can download the Mobile App for PAMEX from Google Play Store and Apple App Store.

all segments of the market are facing similar challenges. Shorter run

lengths, faster time to market, more versioned and variable content – while each segment has slightly different challenges, they are all facing this trifecta, and as a result, are moving to an increasingly digital workflow.

Already, prepress and print have benefited from technologies that speed work through the production process, but for many companies, post-press processes are still a bottleneck, perhaps the last hold-out in the analogue-to-digital transformation.

“Historically post-press was always seen as the industry’s Cinderella technology, taken for granted, undervalued and overlooked. But as run lengths fall and turnaround times come under

more pressure, advances in post-press automation and integration are becoming increasingly important as printers realise that the latest finishing technologies can not only ease production bottlenecks, but actually generate new opportunities,” Darryl Danielli, chief editor UK-based PrintWeek.begin with the end in mind

How a job will be finished must be taken into consideration from the very beginning of

the design and production process. Impositions that are most efficient for the printed sheet may not be the same impositions that are efficient in post-press as each piece of finishing equipment requires a unique imposition; and these two efficiencies must be well balanced for a smooth workflow with minimal waste. And finally, automation is key. Manual machine set-up can be time consuming and error prone,

often be significantly reduced, and less skilled workers can be utilised in the post-press area.

Xerox has played a leadership role in finishing automation since the launch of its ground-breaking DocuTech Production Press in 1990 and the development of its Digital Finishing Architecture (DFA) that now includes unique dual mode configurations which allows the same finishing solution to support both inline and offline workflows. Modularity increases flexibility

It is also important to note that many finishing vendors, especially in the transactional, direct mail and commercial print spaces, including MBO, Mueller Martini and Horizon, offer modular finishing solutions that can be configured on the fly as production needs change.Masters of mail

In the direct mail segment, automation is key, both from a cost perspective and to prevent errors. In addition to automated inserter setup, look for inspection and real-time reporting systems such as those from Ironsides Technology, Videk and others, to play a growing role.

Crossing the finish line – a Cinderella storyAs they say, it isn’t finished until it is finished … and for many companies, there are still significant opportunities for improving throughput and productivity as well as reducing costs in their post-press departments. Cary Sherburne, a well-known author, journalist and marketing consultant whose practice is focused on marketing communications strategies for the printing and publishing industries, shares more on the same.

POST-PreSS

Megabound @ PAMEXRole of finishing in any print job: Good printing always has to end with good finishing in order to give good result, if the finishing part is poor than ultimately the quality of the entire printing will come down. It’s always the finishing, which decides the quality of printing. In order to give good results in finishing, we require good finishing equipments; hence the manufacturers of finishing equipments such as post press machinery manufactures play a major role throughout the world.

Offerings at PAMEX: We are offering the following products in PAMEX: case maker machine (semi-automatic machine and automatic machine), casing in machine (semi-automatic machine and automatic machine), joint forming machine, perfect binding machine.

Company’s USP: Our company is manufacturing specialised machineries which are totally different from any other machineries, such as board to board pasting machinery, rotary board cutter machinery, online casing in, joint forming machinery and different types of case making machinery.

In our company, we do 365 days of R & D work in order to give good hard case complete one stop solution. We provide European standard machineries at lower cost. We also provide good service to all our customers throughout the world.

–Srinivas Reddy, marketing director, Megabound (India) Pvt Ltd

often requiring highly skilled workers and production of “overs” to allow for anticipated waste. To the extent machine setup can be automated based on job ticketing information, bar codes, marks and the like, errors are less likely to occur, the number of overs required can

High value finishingRegardless of the print

technology being used, there are a growing number of digital finishing solutions that add value to the final printed product along with reduced time to market, reduced waste and cost-effective finishing of short to medium runs. And their value is being recognised by buyers and industry associations alike. High value finishing is one way to decommoditise print, mitigating price-based buying decisions.

Digital press manufacturers such as Canon, EFI, HP, Kodak, Ricoh, Xeikon and Xerox are partnering with these post-press suppliers to offer in-line and near-line laser die cutting, coating and other advanced post-press capabilities designed for short-run and one-off efficiencies as well as medium run length production quantities. In addition, digital presses from these companies also offer clear toners that act as a coating agent as well as adding “pop” to images.

All of these capabilities contribute to the overall value of print, adding to the look and feel of printed pieces with gloss, satin or matte finishes, digital embossing, innovative cutting, foiling and other special effects. Where print itself can often be a commodity, adding these types of specialty finishing increases the value of print, does a better job of catching the attention of recipients, and can help marketers get their messages out in a way that is difficult to do with digital communications.

POST-PreSS

Suba Solutions @ PAMEXRole of finishing in

any print job: Without finishing how would you say a print job is complete?

Offerings at PAMEX: It is a catalogue show and we offer information relating to all print conversion equipment like automatic METPET laminators, new generation automatic foil stamper and die cutter, quality inspection system and folding gluer.

Comapny’s USP: Commitment is our USP. We are committed to giving the right information, offering right solution to a customer at all the stages from pre-sales to providing after sales support. If we think our product wouldn’t be suitable for someone and we know of something better, we would not hesitate to recommend that to the customer.

–V Vaidyalingam, director, Suba Solutions

Packaging perfectionPackaging converters are

also benefiting from digital workflows. The digital die cutting and finishing techniques, combined with digital printing, are making it

easier for converters to offer not only small lot finished packages but also faster, more cost effective mock-ups and samples often produced using the same substrates and printing processes that will used for the final product.books and beyondBook printing is an area where digital has made a significant impact, with respect to both printing and finishing. Many book printers have implemented production inkjet printing technology that is replacing offset volumes, especially as the quality of these systems improves and the range of functional substrates increases. Digital lines for book

binding have also made huge strides. For example, earlier this year at Hunkeler Innovationdays, Hunkeler unveiled its smart book solution for short run book production.

Another is Horizon’s stacking solution for B2 digital presses which converts digitally printed B2 sheets into any required sheet size down to A6, collating them

in page order to form book blocks, resulting in print to book block with minimal touch points. MBO also offers a fully variable book block production solution capable of variable format, page count, signatures and more. And Horizon, Kolbus and others offer automated digital-conventional-hybrid book finishing lines that can be configured to meet each plant’s specific manufacturing needs, efficiently producing both perfect bound and case bound books.

And, of course, especially for perfect-bound books, lamination is important to product printed covers. Providers of laminating solutions such as Neschen and Sihl are working hard to optimise those for an ever-growing variety of digital toner and ink types to ensure high quality adhesion.Wrapping it up

If post-press is a bottleneck in your organisation, or if you are considering the purchase of new presses, begin with the end in mind.

Be sure to engage post-press vendors throughout the evaluation process to take advantage of their expertise and to make sure that your ultimate configuration is the best possible match to your requirements. Most of these suppliers offer pre-sale consulting services that can help ensure that you make the right decisions in this important area.

Keep in mind that in post-press, it is especially important to ensure flexibility in your configuration – the ability to add and subtract modules, reconfigure on the fly and more – especially as new customer requirements emerge or new technologies come to market that can improve post-press productivity.
