CITRIX CASE STUDY

Background Mercury Engineering is a world-class Irish company specialising in mechanical engineering, engineering management and information technology services for the construction industry. Recent projects include Dublin Airport’s Terminal 2 and the Aviva Stadium. It also supplied the cooling and air conditioning system for a 500 seat showcase stadium which was an integral part of Qatar’s presentation to secure the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The needMercury Engineering supports 530 users and 800 client machines on three continents. It identifi ed that it could no longer effectively support, integrate and effi ciently manage projects in diverse and often geographically remote environments based on its existing network. This was the impetus behind Mercury Engineering’s decision to implement Citrix XenDesktop and Branch Repeaters.

Citrix saves €500,000 per annum for Mercury Engineering

The SolutionIT Force implemented the virtualisation solution for Mercury Engineering and provided Citrix XenDesktop and Branch Repeaters to keep the 530 users worldwide connected to critical applications.

Citrix XenDesktop provides high performance access to applications around the clock, no matter where Mercury Engineering’s employees are based. It optimises the groups IT resources and ensures effective controls at all times thus integrating the global organisation and keeping costs down.

Every part of Mercury Engineering’s business is managed through its ERP system, from construction jobs, to finance, procurement and HR. This system is delivered to all Mercury Engineering employees through Citrix XenDesktop.

Citrix XenDesktop allows Mercury Engineering to rapidly deploy any project, in any region, and have information flowing almost immediately from when the engineers arrive on site. All essential applications are centrally managed and accessed by users globally, with the same experience as if they were on the local network.

Using Citrix Branch Repeaters Mercury Engineering can accelerate and optimise all desktops and applications delivered to its remote users around the world. As it includes proven WAN optimisation technology it minimises the impact of latency on application performance and maximises WAN capacity.

With the implementation of Citrix technology this has saved Mercury Engineering up to €500,000 per annum and is expected to pay for itself in under a year. Savings include €150,000 in support costs, as everything is centrally supported from one location; network savings of €200,000 with the introduction of Citrix Branch Repeaters; and power savings from implementing virtualisation technology of around €70,000 per annum.

Seamus Noonan, financial controller, Mercury Engineering commented, “The flexibility of Citrix XenDesktop has huge advantages for us as it allows us to report immediately on the progress of projects. It also facilitates effective deployment on projects which in turn leads to efficiencies across the projects.

“We also see from the IT department and central support units that they are able to support a much larger user pool in much more remote regions. All of this together marks Citrix XenDesktop as a cost saving tool.”

As employees are based across three continents they often work in very different time zones to head office. For those based at the head office in Ireland, being able to work remotely in the evenings has given them great flexibility. They can now communicate effectively and provide correct information to employees in other countries, whenever it is needed. Without Citrix XenDesktop this would not be possible.

Conclusion Derek Mizak, IT manager, Mercury Engineering said “We needed to be able to standardise the quality of service for all our users, no matter where they are based.

“Citrix XenDesktop and Branch Repeaters deliver agility so that we can complete projects successfully, on budget and on time. They provide all our employees with access to the information they need, when they need it and in the manner in which they need it wherever in the world they may be.” Joe O’Reilly, IT Force implemented the Citrix solution, “Before Mercury upgraded, its systems ran relatively slowly. This challenge varied by locations, but in some, it was painstakingly slow and this made it very difficult for the engineers to work efficiently. Now remote users have the exact same experience when they log onto their desktops as users in head office, which in turn makes them more effective.”
